Te koop vanaf 17.500 euro: de sandalen van Gandhi
Hoewel de onmaterialistische Mahatma Gandhi
vaak op zijn blote voeten rondliep, droeg hij soms ook sandalen. En
precies deze zullen binnenkort voor een aardig centje over de toonbank
rollen. Op 21 mei gaan ze tijdens de Mullock's veiling (Verenigd
Koninkrijk) onder de hamer.
Concreet gaat het om zwarte sandalen
(maat 41) met een zooltje van bijna 1,5 centimeter. Ze worden geveild
met een startbod van 23.000 dollar (ongeveer 17.500 euro).
Naast
de sandalen, zullen er ook nog andere bezittingen van de voormalige
Indiase premier en onafhankelijkheidsstrijder geveild worden, zoals een
doek die hij zelf gebreid heeft en die hij later rond zijn lichaam
wikkelde. De totale collectie is ongeveer 380.000 dollar waard (ongeveer
288.000 euro). Gandhi zou de persoonlijke items in 1924 aan een hechte
vriend gegeven hebben.
De leider van de lijdzame strijd voor
onafhankelijkheid van India werd in 1948 in New Delhi vermoord door een
extremistische hindoeïst. Gandhi was een van de grondleggers van de
moderne staat India en spande zich in voor de verzoening tussen moslims
