Franse oesteroogst bedreigd na massale, mysterieuze sterfte
Tot 80 procent van de volwassen oesters in oesterkwekerijen in heel Frankrijk sterft. Vermoedelijk is de boosdoener een agressieve bacterie, de vibrio aestuarianus, die profiteert van het warme weer.
Uit stalen van het Institut français pour l'exploitation de la mer (Ifremer) blijkt dat momenteel 15 tot 65 procent van de oesters sterft. In kwekerijen stijgt die sterfte tot 50 à 80 procent, terwijl de natuurlijke oesters minder geraakt zijn (8 tot 10 procent).
De meeste analyses gaan richting een dodelijk bacterie, de vibrio aestuarianus, die ook vorig jaar al voorkwam in Bretagne. Die bacterie gedijt goed door de huidige hoge temperaturen na een koude lente. In 2008 had de Franse oestersector ook al eens te kampen met een herpesvirus, dat toen al even massaal jonge oesters aantastte. In de voorbije vier jaar daalde de Franse oesteroogst daardoor alles samen met een derde, van 120.000 ton vier jaar geleden naar 80.000 ton dit vorig jaar.
De sector is in "hoogste staat van paraatheid", klinkt het in Franse media. Sommige kwekers spreken nu al van een klap van 60 procent op hun totale productie, terwijl de winstmarge sowieso al miniem was. De prijzen verhogen is ook al geen optie meer, gezien de sterke stijging van de oesterprijs in de vorige jaren. (br.hln)
