Boston-slachtoffer danst met prothese op het podium
Een professioneel ballroomdanser die haar linkerbeen verloor tijdens de bomaanslagen bij de Boston Marathon in 2013, staat ruim een jaar na de aanslagen weer op het podium. Adrianne Haslet-Davis danste op een TED-conferentie in Vancouver de rumba met een beenprothese.
De prothese is mede ontwikkeld door Hugh Herr, directeur van Media Lab. Herr mist zelf ook twee benen, die hij verloor door een klimongeval in 1982. Hij ontmoette Haslet-Davis in het ziekenhuis waar zij samen met haar man herstelde van haar verwondingen.
Haar echtgenoot, luchtmachtkapitein Adam Davis, was juist twee weken daarvoor teruggekeerd uit Afghanistan en het stel besloot een kijkje te gaan nemen bij de marathon. Beiden raakten zwaargewond. Met haar optreden hoopt Haslet-Davis andere mensen te inspireren.
"Ik ben een overlevende, geen slachtoffer. Ik ben zo blij dat ik weer kan dansen", zei ze zichtbaar ontroerd. "Ik was vastbesloten ooit weer hier te staan, en nu ben ik zover." (br.hln)
