Steeds meer mensen allergisch aan kiwi's
Groot probleem in Nieuw-Zeeland nu blijkt dat steeds meer inwoners
allergisch worden voor hun nationaal product, de kiwi. Volgens
allergiespecialist Vincent St Aubyn Crump ontwikkelen steeds meer van
zijn landgenoten een hevige vorm van allergie voor het gezonde stukje
fruit.
Hevige reactie Een
procent van de Nieuw-Zeelandse bevolking is al allergisch aan het fruit
en hun aantal neemt nog steeds toe. De kiwiallergie wordt eigenlijk
veroorzaakt door een allergie aan pollen afkomstig van de zilverberk.
Volgens de wetenschapper krijgen mensen die allergisch zijn voor die
pollen op latere leeftijd ernstige problemen met het eten van kiwi's.
In de ergste gevallen gaan ze na het eten van het fruit in shock
waarbij ze in ademnood geraken en kunnen sterven door verstikking. "Ook
het aantal van die extreme reacties op de allergie neemt toe", besluit
Crump.
