Pijn kan nu echt worden gemeten
Pijn is subjectief, want de ene mens kan er beter tegen dan de ander.
Maar nu, zo schrijft de Sunday Times, is het dankzij nieuwe
hersentechnieken ook mogelijk om objectief te meten hoeveel pijn iemand
heeft.
Aan
de universiteit van Oxford is een manier gevonden om, via een "blik in
hersenen" echt na te gaan hoe erg iemand lijdt. Daarbij wordt gebruik
gemaakt van technieken zoals magnetische resonantie beeldvorming
(fMRI), een vorm van scanning die verschillen toont tussen de hersenen
van iemand die afziet en van iemand die geen pijn heeft.
Volgens
onderzoeksleider Irene Tracey doet pijn de bloedtoevoer naar bepaalde
delen van de hersenen toenemen, en die toename weerspiegelt in grote
trekken de ernst van de pijn. "Dit kunnen we nu meten door een scan",
zegt Tracey, die het bestaan bevestigt van een "pijnmatrix" die meer
dan twaalf plaatsen in de hersenen activeert.
