Spijtig heeft Sam de koala het niet gehaald





Koalabeer Sam, die het symbool werd van de vreselijke Australische bosbranden van februari dit jaar, is overleden. Sam was weliswaar hersteld van de zware brandwonden die hij tijdens het inferno opliep, maar moest uiteindelijk door de dierenarts worden afgemaakt omdat hij leed aan chlamydia.

Sam werd gered door brandweerman David Tree. De foto die een collega maakte van hoe die de koala wat water gaf, werd wereldnieuws. De HLN.BE-redactie in Sydney plaatste destijds, op vraag van het Rode Kruis in het getroffen gebied, als eerste niet-Australische site de foto.

Pijn
"Helaas moesten we Sam laten inslapen. Het was heel erg triest", aldus de dierenarts, die de 4-jarige koala onder zijn hoede had. "We konden de pijn van Sam niet meer verzachten."

Helft
Chlamydia is een bekende ziekte onder koala's. De dieren krijgen er cysten van die hun urinewegen aantasten. Het is onduidelijk waarom ze zo gevoelig zijn voor de bacterie. Ongeveer de helft van de in het wild levende koala's lijdt aan de ziekte.
