Verbazing over "te oude" telescoop in schilderij Jan Brueghel de Oude
Italiaanse wetenschappers zeggen verbaasd te zijn over de afbeelding
van een telescoop in een werk van Jan Brueghel de Oude. De zoon van
Pieter Brueghel schilderde volgens hen een telescoop waarvan tot nu toe
werd aangenomen dat die pas vijftien jaar later gemaakt werd, zo heeft
de Nederlandse openbare omroep NOS gemeld.
Allegorie van de zinnen Volgens
de astronomen van het Observatorium in Trieste gaat het om de telescoop
die te zien is in het werk 'Allegorie van de Zinnen', waarvoor Brueghel
samenwerkte met Rubens. Dat werk dateert uit 1617. De
afgebeelde telescoop is volgens de wetenschappers een versie die
bedacht werd door Johannes Kepler. Dat is onder meer te zien aan de
lengte van de kijker en de plek van de lens. Beide zijn anders dan bij
de oorspronkelijke versie van de telescoop, zoals die in 1609 door
Galilei gebruikt werd om de Maan te observeren. Kepler bedacht zijn
versie al in 1611. Tot nu toe werd aangenomen dat dit ontwerp pas in
1631 voor het eerst werd gerealiseerd. Brueghel heeft nu dus volgens de
Italianen het bewijs geleverd dat dit al vijftien jaar eerder gebeurde. Nog altijd is onduidelijk wie de telescoop heeft uitgevonden.
