"Elektrische hersenstimulatie kan anorexia behandelen"
Elektische stimulatie van de hersenen zou patiƫnten met de eetstoornis
anorexia nervosa kunnen behandelen. Dat ontdekte de Leuvense
onderzoeker Kris van Kuyck. Het Fonds Dokter Gustave Delport kent dit
veelbelovende onderzoek zijn tweejaarlijkse prijs toe van 20.000 euro. Meten en stimuleren Door
een nieuw soort elektrodes kunnen zowel de hersenactiviteit gemeten
worden als de hersencellen gestimuleerd worden. Hersencellen die
abnormaal actief zijn kunnen dus op die manier aangepakt worden. Letsel in de hersenen Met
deze onderzoeksmethode ontdekte van Kuyck dat ratten met anorexia
nervosa terug meer gingen eten en het lichaamsgewicht behielden nadat
een miniscuul letsel was aangebracht in de septale nucleus, een zeer
klein gebied in de hersenen. Testen met stimulatie Met
de middelen van het Fonds zal worden nagegaan of met elektrische
stimulatie in dat deel van de hersenen hetzelfde resultaat kan bereikt
worden. Volgens van Kuyck is de kans hiertoe groot.
