Nieuwe balans Haïti: 111.499 doden





De aardbeving in Haïti heeft al minstens 111.499 mensenlevens geëist. Dat blijkt uit een nieuwe balans die de autoriteiten in Haïti zaterdagochtend hebben bekendgemaakt. Tien dagen na de natuurramp slaagden de hulpdiensten erin nog twee levenden vanonder het puin te halen.
 
Behalve 111.499 doden eiste de aardbeving volgens de meest recente cijfers ook 190.000 gewonden. Meer dan 50.000 gezinnen zijn dakloos. In de vorige balans van de Haïtiaanse overheid werd nog gewag gemaakt van 75.000 doden en 250.000 gewonden.
 
Niettemin ontdekken de reddingsteams ruim tien dagen na de ramp nog steeds overlevenden. Zo haalden Israëlische hulpverleners vrijdag een 22-jarige jongeman levend vanonder het puin van een gebouw nabij het presidentiële paleis. Zijn toestand is stabiel.
 
Even voordien hadden buren en vrienden ook een 84-jarige vrouw levend teruggevonden. Ze was ernstig verzwakt en is meteen overgebracht naar een Amerikaans marineschip.
