Olie zal tot eind augustus in Golf van Mexico lekken
Volgens Carol Browner, de energie-adviseur van het Witte Huis, is het
einde van de verschrikkelijke milieuramp nog lang niet in zicht. Zeker
tot eind augustus zal er olie in de Golf van Mexico blijven stromen,
klinkt het onheilspellend.
Eerder verklaarde de energie-adviseur al dat het olielek, veroorzaakt
door het zinken van het olieboorplatform Deepwater Horizon
waarschijnlijk " de ergste milieuramp is die de Verenigde Staten ooit
gekend hebben". Volgens Browner overtreft de hoeveelheid van het goedje
dat nu vrijkomt zelfs de vervuiling na de schipbreuk van de Exxon Valdez
in Alaska in 1989.
Eergisteren
mislukte nog een poging van BP om het lek een halt toe te roepen. De
methode hield in dat door robots een mix van het mineraal bariet,
polymeren en zeewater onder grote druk de pijpleiding ingespoten werd,
waarna met cement het gat blijvend moest worden gedicht. Het olieconcern
gaat nu op zoek naar een andere oplossing. (br.hln)
