Britse avonturier wandelt als eerste hele Amazone af

Een Britse avonturier is er na 859 dagen, duizenden kilometers en
"50.000 muggenbeten" in geslaagd de volledige lengte van de
Amazonerivier af te wandelen. Hij is de eerste die dat huzarenstukje
voor elkaar brengt. "Ik heb het gedaan omdat niemand anders het me ooit
had voorgedaan", legt Ed Stafford eenvoudig uit. De 34-jarige
ex-kapitein in het Britse leger hoopt dat hij met zijn reis de nodige
aandacht kan schenken aan de verwoesting van het Amazonewoud.
Stafford
begon zijn trip op 2 april 2008 aan de zuidkust van Peru. De
onderneming kostte zo'n 100.000 dollar en werd gefinancierd door
sponsors en donaties. Onderweg leefde hij van piranha's die hij ving,
rijst en bonen of goederen die hij kocht in lokale gemeenschappen langs
de rivier. Hij kreeg af te rekenen met verschillende gevaren, zoals
anaconda's, ziekte, gebrek aan voedsel en verdrinking. Om te ontspannen
downloadde hij afleveringen van The Office via zijn satelliettelefoon. (br.hln)
