Een ingenieur van Apple heeft met legoblokjes de eerste bekende
computer ter wereld nagebouwd. Het toestel is een dikke 2.000 jaar oud
en werd gebouwd door de oude Grieken, die er de stand van de zon en de
maan mee konden voorspellen.
Duikers vonden de overblijfselen van het apparaat in 1908 voor de kust
van Antikythera, maar het was pas in 2006 dat x-stralen en CAT-scans
uitwezen waarvoor het toestel precies diende.
Radertjes Het
Antikytheramechanisme is opgebouwd uit een raderwerk, waarvan de
onderdelen afzonderlijke wiskundige berekeningen uitvoeren. Via andere
radertjes worden de resultaten van de berekeningen samengevoegd en
uiteindelijk doorgegeven aan een wijzerplaat. Wijzers tonen daarop de
stand van de hemellichamen.
1.500 stukken Andrew
Carol bouwde het mechanisme in 30 dagen na met 1.500 stukken technisch
lego. Carol moest wel wat extra radertjes inzetten omdat hij met de
standaardonderdelen niet tot de juiste ratio's kwam.
