Zieke wombat blijkt depressief door gebrek aan knuffels
Verzorgsters knuffelen Tonka weer gezond.
In een dierentuin in de Australische deelstaat Queensland hebben
(dure) onderzoeken uitgewezen wat er mis was met wombat Tonka, die 20
procent van zijn lichaamsgewicht verloren was na de doortocht van orkaan
Yasi: het dier bleek depressief.
De tweejarige Tonka is de ster van dierenpark Billabong Sanctuary in
Townsville, en geniet daar van bakken aandacht. Hij laat zich graag
fotograferen terwijl hij beknuffeld en geaaid wordt door bezoekers, en
miste dat blijkbaar enorm hard toen het park acht weken werd gesloten na
het noodweer dat de staat onlangs trof.
"Tonka is grootgebracht
door een van onze rangers, en brengt normaal een aanzienlijk deel van
zijn dag door met mensen", zegt Brett Flemming van het park in de
Townsville Bulletin. De zoo spaarde kosten noch moeite voor onderzoeken
en laboratoriumanalyses om uit te vissen wat er mis was met de wombat.
Na
de verlossende diagnose wordt Tonka opnieuw met de nodige zorgen
omringd om hem er weer bovenop te krijgen, op tijd voor de heropening
