Aantal diabetici wereldwijd meer dan verdubbeld
Het aantal diabetici is sinds 1980 wereldwijd meer dan verdubbeld.
Ongeveer 350 miljoen mensen lijden aan de ziekte. Dat meldt het Brits
medisch tijdschrift The Lancet.
Het aantal volwassenen met suikerziekte is gestegen van 153 miljoen in
1980 naar 347 miljoen in 2008. Dat blijkt uit een studie die
wetenschappers van het Imperial College in Londen en de Harvard
Universiteit in de VS hebben uitgevoerd. Diabetes - een
abnormale suikerspiegel in het bloed - kan hartziekten en infarcten
veroorzaken en tast ook de werking van de nieren, zenuwen en ogen aan.
De ziekte eist wereldwijd elk jaar drie miljoen slachtoffers. "Onze
studie toont aan dat suikerziekte in heel de wereld doordringt", stelt
Majid Ezzati van het Imperial College. Het aantal diabetici is vooral in
landen in de Pacific de hoogte in geschoten. Zo lijdt op de
Marshall-eilanden één vrouw op drie en één man op vier aan suikerziekte.
De stijging is in West-Europa een pak kleiner. (br.hln)
