And, of course, besides these there was Katie Nanna, who doesnt really deserve to come into the book at all because, at the time I am speaking of, she had just left Number Seventeen.
Without by your leave or a word of warning. And what am I to do? said Mrs. Banks.
Advertise, my dear, said Mr. Banks, putting on his shoes. And I wish Robertson Ay would go without a word of warning, for he has again polished one boot and left the other untouched. I shall look very lopsided.
That, said Mrs. Banks, is not of the least importance. You havent told me what Im to do about Katie Nanna.
I dont see how you can do anything about her since she has disappeared, replied Mr. Banks, But if it were meI mean Iwell, I should get somebody to put in the Morning Paper the news that Jane and Michael and John and Barbara Banks (to say nothing of their Mother) require the best possible Nannie at the lowest possible wage and at once. Then I should wait and watch for the Nannies to queue up outside the front gate, and I should get very cross with them for holding up the traffic and making it necessary for me to give the policeman a shilling for putting him to so much trouble. Now I must be off. Whew, its as cold as the North Pole. Which way is the wind blowing?
And as he said that, Mr. Banks popped his head out of the window and looked down the Lane to Admiral Booms house at the corner. This was the grandest house in the Lane, and the Lane was very proud of it because it was built exactly like a ship. There was a flagstaff in the garden, and on the roof was a gilt weathercock shaped like a telescope.

Uit: The Crushed Flower (Vertaald door Herman Bernstein)
His name was Yura. He was six years old, and the world was to him enormous, alive and bewitchingly mysterious. He knew the sky quite well. He knew its deep azure by day, and the white-breasted, half silvery, half golden clouds slowly floating by. He often watched them as he lay on his back upon the grass or upon the roof. But he did not know the stars so well, for he went to bed early. He knew well and remembered only one starthe green, bright and very attentive star that rises in the pale sky just before you go to bed, and that seemed to be the only star so large in the whole sky. But best of all, he knew the earth in the yard, in the street and in the garden, with all its inexhaustible wealth of stones, of velvety grass, of hot sand and of that wonderfully varied, mysterious and delightful dust which grown people did not notice at all from the height of their enormous size. And in falling asleep, as the last bright image of the passing day, he took along to his dreams a bit of hot, rubbed off stone bathed in sunshine or a thick layer of tenderly tickling, burning dust. When he went with his mother to the centre of the city along the large streets, he remembered best of all, upon his return, the wide, flat stones upon which his steps and his feet seemed terribly small, like two little boats. And even the multitude of revolving wheels and horses heads did not impress themselves so clearly upon his memory as this new and unusually interesting appearance of the ground.

The Careless Good Fellow (Fragment)
A pox of this fooling, and plotting of late,
What a pother, and stir has it kept in the state?
Let the rabble run mad with suspicions, and fears,
Let them scuffle, and jar, till they go by the ears:
Their grievances never shall trouble my pate,
So I can enjoy my dear bottle at quiet.
What coxcombs were those, who would barter their ease
And their necks for a toy, a thin wafer and mass?
At old Tyburn they never had needed to swing,
Had they been but true subjects to drink, and their king;
A friend, and a bottle is all my design;
He has no room for treason, that's top-full of wine.
I mind not the members and makers of laws,
Let them sit or prorogue, as his majesty please:
Let them damn us to woollen, I'll never repine
At my lodging, when dead, so alive I have wine:
Yet oft in my drink I can hardly forbear
To curse them for making my claret so dear.

Uit: The Life Of Mr. George Herbert
"George Herbert was born the Third day of April, in the Year of our Redemption 1593. The place of his birth was near to the Town of Montgomery, and in that Castle[1] that did then bear the name of that
Town and County; that Castle was then a place of state and strength, and had been successively happy in the Family of the Herberts, who had long possessed it; and with it, a plentiful estate, and hearts as liberal to their poor neighbours. A family, that hath been blessed with men of remarkable wisdom, and a willingness to serve their country, and, indeed, to do good to all mankind; for which they are eminent: But alas! this family did in the late rebellion suffer extremely in their estates; and the heirs of that Castle saw it laid level with that earth, that was too good to bury those wretches that
were the cause of it.
The Father of our George was Richard Herbert, the son of Edward Herbert, Knight, the son of Richard Herbert, Knight, the son of the famous Sir Richard Herbert of Colebrook, in the County of Monmouth, Banneret, who was the youngest brother of that memorable William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, that lived in the reign of our King Edward the Fourth.
