The difference is partly one of time, he would explain. Whereas the tourist generally hurries back home at the end of a few weeks or months, the traveler, belonging no more to one place than to the next, moves slowly, over periods of years, from one part of the earth to another. Indeed, he would have found it difficult to tell, among the many places he had lived, precisely where it was he had felt most at home. Before the war it had been Europe and the Near East, during the war the West Indies and South America. And she had accompanied him without reiterating her complaints too often or too bitterly.
At this point they had crossed the Atlantic for the first time since 1939, with a great deal of luggage and the intention of keeping as far as possible from the places which had been touched by the war. For, as he claimed, another important difference between tourist and traveler is that the former accepts his own civilization without question; not so the traveler, who compares it with the others, and rejects those elements he finds not to his liking. And the war was one facet of the mechanized age he wanted to for get.
In New York they had found that North Africa was one of the few places they could get boat passage to. From his earlier visits, made during his student days in Paris and Madrid, it seemed a likely place to spend a year or so; in any case it was near Spain and Italy, and they could always cross over if it failed to work out. Their little freighter had spewed them out from its comfortable maw the day before onto the hot docks, sweating and scowling with anxiety, where for a long time no one had paid them the slightest attention. As he stood there in the burning sun, he had been tempted to go back aboard and see about taking passage for the continuing voyage to Istanbul, but it would have been difficult to do without losing face, since it was he who had cajoled them into coming to North Africa. So he had cast a matter-of-fact glance up and down the dock, made a few reasonably unflattering remarks about the place, and let it go at that, silently resolving to start inland as quickly as possible.

Im Norden der Grafschaft Ruppin, hart an der mecklenburgischen Grenze, zieht sich von dem Städtchen Gransee bis nach Rheinsberg hin (und noch darüber hinaus) eine mehrere Meilen lange Seenkette durch eine menschenarme, nur hie und da mit ein paar Dörfern, sonst aber ausschließlich mit Förstereien, Glas- und Teeröfen besetzte Waldung. Einer der Seen, die diese Seenkette bilden, heißt »der Stechlin«. Zwischen flachen, nur an einer einzigen Stelle steil und kaiartig ansteigenden Ufern liegt er da, rundum von alten Buchen eingefaßt, deren Zweige, von ihrer eignen Schwere nach unten gezogen, den See mit ihrer Spitze berühren. Hie und da wächst ein weniges von Schilf und Binsen auf, aber kein Kahn zieht seine Furchen, kein Vogel singt, und nur selten, daß ein Habicht drüber hinfliegt und seinen Schatten auf die Spiegelfläche wirft. Alles still hier. Und doch, von Zeit zu Zeit wird es an ebendieser Stelle lebendig. Das ist, wenn es weit draußen in der Welt, sei's auf Island, sei's auf Java zu rollen und zu grollen beginnt oder gar der Aschenregen der hawaiischen Vulkane bis weit auf die Südsee hinausgetrieben wird. Dann regt sich's auch hier, und ein Wasserstrahl springt auf und sinkt wieder in die Tiefe. Das wissen alle, die den Stechlin umwohnen, und wenn sie davon sprechen, so setzen sie wohl auch hinzu: »Das mit dem Wasserstrahl, das ist nur das Kleine, das beinah Alltägliche; wenn's aber draußen was Großes gibt, wie vor hundert Jahren in Lissabon, dann brodelt's hier nicht bloß und sprudelt und strudelt, dann steigt statt des Wasserstrahls ein roter Hahn auf und kräht laut in die Lande hinein.«
Das ist der Stechlin, der See Stechlin.
Aber nicht nur der See führt diesen Namen, auch der Wald, der ihn umschließt. Und Stechlin heißt ebenso das langgestreckte Dorf, das sich, den Windungen des Sees folgend, um seine Südspitze herumzieht. Etwa hundert Häuser und Hütten bilden hier eine lange, schmale Gasse, die sich nur da, wo eine von Kloster Wutz her heranführende Kastanienallee die Gasse durchschneidet, platzartig erweitert. An ebendieser Stelle findet sich denn auch die ganze Herrlichkeit von Dorf Stechlin zusammen; das Pfarrhaus, die Schule, das Schulzenamt, der Krug, dieser letztere zugleich ein Eck- und Kramladen mit einem kleinen Mohren und einer Girlande von Schwefelfäden in seinem Schaufenster. Dieser Ecke schräg gegenüber, unmittelbar hinter dem Pfarrhause, steigt der Kirchhof lehnan, auf ihm, so ziemlich in seiner Mitte, die frühmittelalterliche Feldsteinkirche mit einem aus dem vorigen Jahrhundert stammenden Dachreiter und einem zur Seite des alten Rundbogenportals angebrachten Holzarm, dran eine Glocke hängt.

I believe that what separates humanity from everything else in this world -- spaghetti, binder paper, deep-sea creatures, edelweiss and Mount McKinley -- is that humanity alone has the capacity at any given moment to commit all possible sins. Even those of us who try to live a good and true life remain as far away from grace as the Hillside Strangler or any demon who ever tried to poison the village well. What happened that morning only confirms this.
It was a glorious fall morning. The sun burned a girly pink over the mountain ranges to the west, and the city had yet to generate its daily smog blanket. Before driving to school in my little white Chevette, I went into the living room and used my father's telescope to look down at the harbor, as smooth as mercury, and on its surface I could see the moon dimming over East Vancouver. And then I looked up into the real sky and saw the moon on the cusp of being over-powered by the sun.
My parents had already gone to work, and my brother, Chris, had left for swim team hours before. The house was quiet -- not even a clock ticking -- and as I opened the front door, I looked back and saw some gloves and unopened letters on the front hallway desk. Beyond them, on the living room's gold carpet, were some discount warehouse sofas and a lamp on a side table that we never used because the light bulb always popped when we switched it on. It was lovely, all that silence and all that calm order, and I thought how lucky I was to have had a good home. And then I turned and walked outside. I was already a bit late, but I was in no hurry.
Normally I used the garage door, but today I wanted a touch of formality. I had thought that this morning would be my last truly innocent glance at my childhood home -- not because of what really ended up happening, but because of another, smaller drama that was supposed to have unfolded.
I'm glad that the day was as quiet and as average as it was. The air was see-your-breath chilly, and the front lawn was crunchy with frost, as though each blade had been batter fried. The brilliant blue and black Steller's jays were raucous and clearly up to no good on the eaves trough, and because of the frost, the leaves on the Japanese maples had been converted into stained-glass shards.
