Georg Trakl werd op 3 februari 1887 in het conducteurshuis aan de Waagplatz 2 in Salzburg geboren. Zijn vader, Tobias Trakl, was een handelaar in ijzerwaren en zijn moeder, die ook psychische problemen had, was Maria Catharina Trakl, (meisjesnaam Halik). Voorts had hij nog drie broers en drie zussen. Margarethe (doorgaans Grethe genoemd) stond hem het naast, zelfs zodanig dat sommigen een incestueuze verhouding vermoeden. Zijn jeugd bracht hij door in Salzburg. Vervolgens bezocht hij van 1897 tot 1905 het humanistische gymnasium. Om toch een academische opleiding te kunnen volgen, werkte hij tot 1908 in de praktijk bij een apotheker. Sommigen vermoedden dat hij dit vooral deed om zichzelf opiaten te kunnen verschaffen. Bij het uitbreken van WO I werd Trakl als medicus naar het front in Galicië (heden ten dage in Oekraïne en Polen) gestuurd. Zijn gemoedsschommelingen leidden tot geregelde uitbraken van depressie, die verergerd werden door de afschuw die hij voelde voor de verzorging van de ernstig verwonde soldaten. De spanning en druk dreven hem ertoe een suïcidepoging te ondernemen, welke zijn kameraden nochtans verhinderden. Hij werd in een militair ziekenhuis opgenomen in Kraków, alwaar hij onder strikt toezicht geplaatst werd.Trakl verzonk daar in nog zwaardere depressies en schreef Ficker om advies. Ficker overtuigde hem ervan dat hij contact moest opnemen met Wittgenstein, die inderdaad op weg ging na Trakls bericht te hebben ontvangen. Op 4 november 1914, drie dagen voordat Wittgenstein aan zou komen, overleed hij echter aan een overdosis cocaïne
Paul Celan
Paul Celan werd onder de naam Paul Antschel op 23 november 1920 geboren in Czernowitz, toentertijd de hoofdstad van de Roemeense Boekovina, nu behorend bij de Oekraïne. Paul Celans ouders waren Duitssprekende joden die hun zoon joods opvoedden en hem naar Duitse christelijke scholen stuurden. In 1942 werden Celans ouders door de Duitse bezetter naar een werkkamp gedeporteerd en daar vermoord. Hijzelf wist aanvankelijk onder te duiken, maar moest vanaf juli 1942 in een werkkamp dwangarbeid verrichten. Celan overleefde de oorlog. Via Boekarest en Wenen vestigde Celan zich in 1948 in Parijs. Daar was hij werkzaam als dichter, vertaler en doceerde hij aan de prestigieuze Ecole Normale Supérieure. Vermoedelijk op 20 april 1970 beëindigde hij zijn leven zelf door in de Seine te springen.
Gerard Reve

Simon Vestdijk
Simon Vestdijk (Harlingen, 17 oktober 1898 – Utrecht, 23 maart 1971) was een Nederlands romancier, dichter, essayist en vertaler. Zijn jeugd te Harlingen en Leeuwarden beschreef hij later in de Anton Wachter-cyclus. Van jongs af aan logeerde hij regelmatig bij zijn grootouders in Amsterdam, waar hij zich in 1917 aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam inschrijft als student in de medicijnen. Tijdens zijn studie die van 1917 tot 1927 duurde, leerde hij Jan Slauerhoff kennen.Tot 1932 is hij als arts in praktijken door heel Nederland werkzaam. In 1932 volgt zijn officiële schrijversdebuut met de uitgave van de bundel Verzen in De Vrije Bladen. Doorslaggevend voor Vestdijks uiteindelijke keuze voor de literatuur is zijn ontmoeting in 1932 met Eddy Du Perron en Menno ter Braak. Deze ontmoeting had tot resultaat dat hij redactielid werd van het tijdschrift Forum Kort daarop, in 1933, wordt zijn eerste novelle, De oubliette, uitgegeven. In hetzelfde jaar schrijft hij Kind tussen vier vrouwen, dat, eerst geweigerd door de uitgever, later de basis zal vormen voor de eerste drie delen van de Anton Wachter-romans. In 1951 ontvangt Vestdijk de P.C. Hooftprijs voor zijn in 1947 verschenen roman De vuuraanbidders. In 1957 wordt hij voor het eerst door het PEN-centrum voor Nederland voorgedragen voor de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur, die hij echter nooit zal krijgen. Op 20 maart 1971 wordt hem de Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren toegekend, maar voor hij deze kan ontvangen overlijdt hij op 23 maart te Utrecht op 72-jarige leeftijd. Vestdijk was auteur van ca. 200 boeken. Vanwege deze enorme productie noemde de dichter Adriaan Roland Holst hem 'de man die sneller schrijft dan God kan lezen'. Andere belangrijke boeken van Simon Vestdijk zijn: "Kind van stad en land" (1936), "Meneer Visser's hellevaart" (1936), "Ierse nachten" (1946), "De toekomst de religie" (1947), "Pastorale 1943" (1948), "De koperen tuin" (1950), "Ivoren wachters" (1951), "Essays in duodecimo" (1952) en "Het genadeschot" (1964).
K.P. Kavafis K.P. Kavafis werd als kind van Griekse ouders, afkomstig uit Konstantinopel, geboren in 1863 in Alexandrië (tot vandaag een Griekse enclave) waar hij ook het grootste deel van zijn leven woonde en werkte. Twee jaar na de dood van zijn vader verhuist het gezin in 1872 naar Engeland om na een verblijf van vijf jaar naar Alexandrië terug te keren. Vanwege ongeregeldheden in Egypte vlucht het gezin in 1882 naar Konstantinopel, om na drie jaar opnieuw naar Alexandrië terug te gaan. In de jaren die volgen maakt Kavafis reizen naar Parijs, Londen en in 1901 zijn eerste reis naar Griekenland, in latere jaren gevolgd door nog enkele bezoeken. Op de dag van zijn zeventigste verjaardag, in 1933 sterft Kavafis in Alexandrië. De roem kwam voor Kavafis pas na zijn dood, dus postuum. Deels is dat toe te schrijven aan zijn eigen handelswijze. Hij was uiterst terughoudend met de publicatie van zijn gedichten, liet af en toe een enkel gedicht afdrukken in een literair tijdschrift, gaf in eigen beheer enkele bundels met een stuk of twintig gedichten uit en het merendeel van zijn poëzie schonk hij op losse bladen aan zijn beste vrienden.
Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann, de jongere broer van Heinrich Mann, werd geboren op 6 juni 1875 in Lübeck. Hij was de tweede zoon van de graankoopman Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann welke later één van de senatoren van Lübreck werd. Zijn moeder Julia (geboren da Silva-Bruhns) was Duits-Braziliaans van Portugees Kreoolse afkomst. In 1894 debuteerde Thomas Mann met de novelle "Gefallen". Toen Thomas Mann met 21 jaar eindelijk volwassen was en hem dus geld van zijn vaders erfenis toestond - hij kreeg ongeveer 160 tot 180 goldmark per jaar - besloot hij dat hij genoeg had van al die scholen en instituties en werd onafhankelijk schrijver. Kenmerkend voor zijn stijl zijn de ironie, de fenomenale taalbeheersing en de minutieuze detailschildering. Manns reputatie in Duitsland was sterk wisselend. Met zijn eerste roman, Buddenbrooks (1901), had hij een enorm succes, maar door zijn sceptische houding tegenover Duitsland na de Eerste Wereldoorlog veranderde dit volledig. Stelde hij zich tot aan de jaren twintig apolitiek op (Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen, 1918), meer en meer raakte hij bij het Politiek gebeuren betrokken. Zijn afkeer van het nationaal socialisme groeide, zijn waarschuwingen werden veelvuldiger en heftiger. In 1944 accepteerde hij het Amerikaanse staatsburgerschap. Tussen 1943 en 1947 schreef Mann Doktor Faustus (zie Faust), de roman van de 'Duitse ziel' in de gecamoufleerd geschilderde omstandigheden van de 20ste eeuw. In 1947 bezocht hij voor het eerst sinds de Oorlog Europa, twee jaar later pas Duitsland. In 1952 vertrok hij naar Zwitserland. Op 12 augustus 1955 stierf hij in Zürich. Twintig jaar na zijn dood, in aug. 1975, is zijn literaire nalatenschap geopend: dagboekaantekeningen van 15 maart 1933 tot 29 juli 1955, alsmede notities uit de jaren 1918 tot en met 1921.Belangrijke werken zijn: Der Zauberberg, Der Tod in Venedig, Dokter Faustus , Joseph und seine Brüder en Die Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull.
Rainer Maria Rilke
Rilke werd op 4 december 1875 geboren in Praag. Hij had al naam gemaakt als dichter met zijn bundels Das Stundenbuch en Das Buch der Bilder, toen hij de literaire wereld versteld deed staan en wereldfaam verwierf met de publicatie van zijn twee delen Neue Gedichte in 1907 en 1908. Hij verzamelde daarin het beste werk uit een van zijn vruchtbaarste periodes, die hij grotendeels doorbracht in Parijs. Rilke was daar diep onder de indruk gekomen van Rodin, bij wie hij een tijdlang in dienst was als particulier secretaris. Rodin, zei hij later, had hem leren kijken. Dit kijken kwam neer op intense concentratie, om het mysterie te kunnen zien ‘achter de schijnbare werkelijkheid'. Latere en rijpere werken als Duineser Elegien (1912-1923) en het ronduit schitterende Die Sonette an Orfeus (1924) illustreren Rilkes metafysische visie op het onzegbare, dat haar verwoording vindt in een hermetische muzikale taal. Op 29 december 1926 overlijdt Rilke in het sanatorium in Val-Mont aan de gevolgen van leukemie. Enkele dagen later wordt hij, overeenkomstig zijn wens, begraven op het kerkhof van Raron.

Und der aus dieser Liaison entsprungene Philip Stan-hope hatte ebenfalls nichts Besseres zu tun, als der Mode seiner Zeit zu folgen und auf seiner Grand Tour in Rom den von einem Zeitgenossen als •plain almost to ugliness« beschriebenen Reizen meiner Ururururgroßmutter Eugenia Peters zu verfallen. Er war gerade mal achtzehn Jahre alt, sie zwanzig. Ihrem Schoße ent-sprangen Charles und der nächste Philip Stanhope, geheiratet haben die beiden aber erst Jahre nach der illegitimen Geburt ihrer Söhne 1730, im Jahr von Kattes Hinrichtung, in Dresden, und von der Existenz seiner Enkel erfuhr der Vierte Graf von Chester-field erst nach dem frühen Tod seines Sohnes. Diese mehr illustre als ehrenvolle Ahnengalerie hilft mir nicht einmal in grundlosen Phasen der Schwermut, meine von Selbst-mitleid und Minderwertigkeitsgefühlen gemarterte Seele aufzurichten.“

Joachim Ringelnatz (7 augustus 1883 – 17 november 1934)
“I was named for my great-grandfather John Tollefson, who landed in Lake Wobegon, in the center of Minnesota, from Voss, Norway, in 1880. Lake Wobegon was a rough town then, where, all on one block, for less than five dollars, you could get a tattoo, a glass of gin, and a social disease, and have enough left over to get in a poker game, but Lutherans civilized it. They were hard workers, indifferent to vice. John and his wife, Signe, came from Voss and begat Einar, and Einar and Birthe (Birdy) begat Byron, and Byron and Mary begat me, John, the third of five children, with Bill and Diana ahead of me and Ronnie (Byron, Jr.) and Judy after. They did not weave their lives around yours. They had their own lives, which were mysterious to you. I remember the day I graduated from tricycle to shiny new two-wheeler, a big day. I wobbled down Green Street and made a U-turn and waved to Mother on the front porch, and she wasn't there. She had tired of watching me and gone in. I was shocked at her lack of interest. I went racing around the corner onto McKinley Street, riding very fast so I would have big tales to tell her, and I raced down the hill past the Catholic church and the old black mutt ran out to greet me and I swerved and skidded on loose gravel and tumbled off the bike onto the pavement and skinned myself and lay on the tar, weeping, hoping for someone to come pick me up, but nobody came. The dog barked at me to get up. I limped three blocks home with skin scraped off my forearm and knee, my eyes brimming with tears, and when I came into the kitchen, she looked down at me and said, "It's only a scrape. Daarnet, twee uur in de nacht alweer, floepte de TV aan en daar stond ik, in Madison Square Garden, tien jaar jonger en goochelend als geeneen.
Door een onzichtbare massa opgezweept, cirkelzaagde ik mijn assistente rats in twee, de wekker die ik stuksloeg werd niet heel en de konijnen vluchtten naar de concurrentie. Het werd ze allemaal teveel.
'Kop op, ouwe jongen!' Mijn hoofd schoot door het scherm. 'Zo zie je maar: tien jaar geleden ging je ook al naar de kloten. Encore, mijn beste, het kan er alleen maar op verbeteren. Encore!'
Showmuziek werd ingezet, warm applaus, en goedgebouwde vrienden die ik lang vergeten was, dansten en swingden on the floor, als gek.

“Als ik me naar hem toe keer staat Jan zijn bloes in zijn broek te frommelen. Hij steekt me een hand toe en trekt me overeind. 'Zullen we gaan?' We sjokken het Klif op, van het geheim is niets meer te bemerken, Jan is gewoon en onverschillig. `Heb jij al wat van thuis gehoord?' Ik heb een brief uit Amsterdam gekregen. Mammie is terug, schreef mijn vader, en het ging ze goed. Of ik het fijn had, of het aardige mensen waren waar ik logeerde. De mevrouw waar ik woonde had geschreven dat ik in bed had geplast. Ik loop naar het hek en Jan pakt me met twee handen bij mijn keel. 'Tegen niemand zeggen dat je mijn lul hebt gezien,' fluistert hij, 'anders krijg ik je.' Hij duwt me achteruit en loopt met vlugge passen weg dwars door het weiland. “As always in times of stress, my mind flew quickly to literature, and my arrest reminded me of a scene from an old propaganda novel, Red Rock, about the underground Communist movement in the 1940s. In the story, a Kuomintang agent in Chongqing lured an underground Communist to a rendezvous. When the Communist arrived, agents tackled him from all sides. Unlike me, the Communist was fearless. He adjusted his handcuffed hands and calmly climbed into the police car. Compared to the fictional heroic martyr, I had behaved like a badly beaten dog. The police car climbed up a hill. I took a quick glance outside and saw the entrance to the Sichuan Foreign Languages Institute where we had held the audition for my Requiem film. A cemetery for Communist martyrs sat not far away. Soon, we passed Zhajidong, a notorious prison where the Kuomintang had executed many Communists before their defeat in 1949. The prison had been turned into a museum to showcase the Kuomintang’s brutality. The horrors of history may have been featured in that nearby museum, but the new investigation center, where I was heading, was built for those accused of crimes against the new China. “Damn!” I shuddered. “My life is over.” The police car drove slowly on a narrow road that curved around a hill. Soon I could hear the pine forest moaning in the wind. The wind-screen wipers swung back and forth vigorously as the spring drizzle turned into a heavy rain. “Nell shifts her bag along the plastic seating in the station and checks the clock on the wall for the eighty-ninth time. Her gaze flicks back as the door from Security slides open. Another family — clearly Disney-bound — walks through into the departure lounge, with buggy, screaming children and parents who have been awake way too long. For the last half-hour her heart has been thumping, a sick feeling high in her chest. “He will come. He will still come. He can still make it,” she says under her breath. “Train 9051 to Paris will be leaving from platform two in ten minutes. Please make your way to the platform. Remember to take all luggage with you.” She chews her lip, then texts him again — the fifth time. Where are you? Train about to leave! She had texted him twice as she set off, checking that they were still meeting at the station. When he didn’t answer, she told herself it was because she had been on the Underground. Or he had. She sends a third text, and a fourth. And then, as she stands there, her phone vibrates in her hand. Sorry babe. Caught up at work. Not going to make it. As if they had planned to catch up over a quick drink after work. She stares at the phone in disbelief. Not going to make this train? Shall I wait? And, seconds later, the reply: No, you go. Will try to get later train. She is too shocked to be angry. She stands still, as people get to their feet around her, pulling on coats, and punches out a reply.“

Meine Schwester saß im Gras, wedelte mit einer Pusteblume und schaute zu, wie die kleinen Fallschirme Pirouetten schlugen. Bevor Vater aufs Dach gestiegen war, hatte er es mir genau erklärt. Wir standen auf dem schmalen Grasstreifen vor unserem Haus. Die Leiter lehnte bereits an der Wand. Sonnenstrahlen schimmerten durch die Kirschbaumkrone und erzeugten wundersame Schatten auf dem Asphalt. »Im Weltraum kreisen Satelliten um die Erde«, sagte er, »mehr als zehntausend Satelliten. De Amerikaanse schrijver Robert Beck(alias Iceberg Slim) werd geboren op 4 augustus 1918 als Robert Lee Maupin in Chicago en groeide op in slechte omstandigheden in Rockford, Illinois. Zijn moeder werkte als huishoudster en runde een schoonheidssalon. Als jonge man studeerde hij aan Tuskegee University, maar hij stopte met zijn studie in 1937. Op 18-jarige leeftijd werd Beck pooier in Chicago en had al snel groot financieel succes. Vanwege zijn lichaamslengte van bijna 2 meter en zijn ijzige kalmte verwierf hij de bijnaam Iceberg Slim. Hij bracht in totaal zeven jaar in de gevangenis door, ontsnapt een keer, werd opnieuw gearresteerd. Na zijn laatste gevangenisstraf vertrok hij naar Californië en veranderde hij de achternaam Maupin in Beck, ter ere van zijn stiefvader. Hij werd in Californië herenigd met zijn moeder, die kort daarna aan kanker overleed. Aangegrepen door deze gebeurtenis stopte Beck met het gebruik van heroïne. In 1962 werkte hij als verkoper van insecticiden. Toen hij een klant ontmoette die docent was aan een college, vertelde hij over zijn verleden als pooier en kreeg hij de raad om een autobiografie te schrijven. Beck schreef toen het boek “Pimp: The Story of My Life” in drie maanden. De uitgever Holloway House in Los Angeles publiceerde “Pimp” in 1967 en al zijn werken daarna, in totaal acht romans. Het debuutboek werd een controversieel succes en verkocht heel goed, vooral in de zwarte gemeenschap. In 1973 werd het in 19 edities gedrukt en in 2 miljoen exemplaren verkocht. Pimp werd snel gevolgd door een aantal andere memoires van schrijvers met een gelijke achtergrond als Beck. Beck was na Alex Haley een van de meest gelezen zwarte schrijvers van zijn generatie. Al zijn boeken werden alleen in zakformaat gegeven. Iceberg Slim schreef ook een verzameling van gedichten, “Reflections”, in de vroege jaren 1970 en maakte een opname met dezelfde naam, waarop hij zijn gedichten voordroeg tegen een muzikale achtergrond.

“The first time I saw Steve he was sitting getting his nails manicured in the shop. Mama was smiling into his handsome olive-tinted face as she buffed his nails. I didn't know when I first saw him that he was the pin-striped snake who would poison the core of our lives. I certainly had no inkling that last day at the shop as live billows of steam hissed from the old pressing machine each time Henry slammed its lid down on a garment. Jesus! It was hot in that little shop, but I loved every minute of it. It was school-vacation time for me and every summer I worked in the shop all day, every day helping my stepfather. That day as I saw my reflection on the banker's expensive black shoes I was perhaps the happiest black boy in Rockford. As I applied the sole dressing I hummed my favorite tune 'Spring Time in the Rockies.' The banker stepped down from the shine stand, stood for a moment as I flicked lint from his soft rich suit, then with a warm smile he pressed an extravagant fifty-cent piece into my hand and stepped out into the broiling street. Now I whistled my favorite tune, shines were only a dime, what a tip. I didn't know at the time that the banker would never press another coin into my hand, that for the next thirty-five years this last day would be remembered vividly as the final day of real happiness for me. I would press five-dollar bills into the palms of shine boys. My shoes would be hand made, would cost three times as much as the banker's shoes, but my shoes though perfectly fitted would be worn in tension and fear. There was really nothing out of the ordinary that day. Nothing during that day that I heard or saw that prepared me for the swift, confusing events that over the weekend would slam my life away from all that was good to all that was bad. Now looking back remembering that last day in the shop as clearly as if it were yesterday my stepfather, Henry, was unusually quiet. My young mind couldn't grasp his worry, his heart break. (…)

Verlaat ’t Centraal en zie de stad, die zich voor de stad ontvouwt gelijk een waaier, baan naast baan, van parelgrijs en goud. Het parelgrijs der morgenlucht, die over de Amstel stijgt, het goud van zon en herfstseizoen, dat al ten einde neigt.
Welk oord gij ook om haar verliet, zij komt u tegemoet met kaden, Damrak en de bBeurs en schepen onder ’t roet, met torens rank breed en sterk van steen en rank van makelij en, als ge goede oren hebt, met roepen over ’t Y.
Daar is geen stad als Amsterdam zoo ruim en zoo vertrouwd; als ik een huis te bouwen had, ik had het hier gebouwd met vensters waar al ’t licht door stroomt, dat van den Amstel slaat, wanneer de winter ’t water stremt en ’t volk te schaatsen gaat.
Wie ’s avonds voor die vensters staat hij ziet den warmen gloed, die boven Leidsche en Rembrandtplein de wolken walmen doet doet; hij ziet, wanneer hij oogen heeft, de onbewogen wacht van Heerengracht en Keizersgracht bij ’t ingaan van de nacht.
Die, trouwloos van aard als ik, eens Amsterdam verried, hij vindt geen rust aleer zijn schuld gedelgd is met een lied en waar hij zwerft en wat hij zoekt vindt hij ter wereld niet, voordat hij weer de duiven rond den Westertoren ziet.
En niet aleer zijn voetstap weer de oude stad hervindt, de Wallen, ’t Kolkje, de Zeedijk, of voordat hij de wind bij Schreierstoren heeft gevoeld te waaien door zijn haar, niet eer houdt Amsterdam voor hem haar liefste vreugde klaar.
Want die het diepste wordt bemind zij toeft in Amsterdam, zoo brandt, in edel goud gevat, ‘t juweel gelijk een vlam, en waar het hart slaat van mijn land slaat ook haar franke hart rood is haar mond, o Amsterdam, en zie haar haren zwart.
Nu dit beeld mij niet meer verlaat, bij dag niet noch bij nacht weet ik dat ieder sterveling wel eens wordt thuisgebracht. Hij neemt zijn staf, hij schoeit den voet en keert vanwaar hij kwam; hij delgt zijn schuld en dicht een lied voor haar en Amsterdam.

„Niemand wusste so richtig, was im Kopf meiner Mutter vorging. Leute, die sie kannten, behaupteten, dass dort eine entzückende Leere herrschte, andere wiederum konnten geradezu den Donner hören, den der eingeschlossene Geist beim Nachdenken erzeugte. Tatsache war, dass sie manchmal zu erstaunlichen Kopfgeburten fähig war, deren volle Wucht als Erstes mich, ihren einzigen Sohn, traf. Ihre erste Kopfgeburt war fast schon amüsant. Trotzdem machte sie davon nicht oft Gebrauch, und als ich ein Jahr alt war, verzichtete sie aus unerfindlichen Gründen völlig darauf. Sie tauchte eines Tages mit mir auf dem Arm im Haus meiner Großeltern auf und bat sie, über das Wochenende auf mich aufzupassen. Sie kam erst nach elf Jahren wieder zurück und fragte, als ob nichts geschehen wäre, wo ich gerade sei. “On Friday 25 October, exactly one week before the first body was discovered at the Dupayne Museum, Adam Dalgliesh visited the museum for the first time. The visit was fortuitous, the decision impulsive and he was later to look back on that afternoon as one of life's bizarre coincidences which, although occurring more frequently than reason would expect, never fail to surprise. He had left the Home Office building in Queen Anne's Gate at two-thirty after a long morning meeting only briefly interrupted by the usual break for brought-in sandwiches and indifferent coffee, and was walking the short distance back to his New Scotland Yard office. He was alone; that too was fortuitous. The police representation at the meeting had been strong and Dalgliesh would normally have left with the Assistant Commissioner, but one of the Under Secretaries in the Criminal Policy Department had asked him to look in at his office to discuss a query unrelated to the morning's business, and he walked unaccompanied. The meeting had produced the expected imposition of paperwork and as he cut through St James's Park Underground station into Broadway he debated whether to return to his office and risk an afternoon of interruptions or to take the papers home to his Thames-side flat and work in peace. There had been no smoking at the meeting but the room had seemed musty with spent breath and now he took pleasure in breathing fresh air, however briefly. It was a blustery day but unseasonably mild. The bunched clouds were tumbling across a sky of translucent blue and he could have imagined that this was spring except for the autumnal sea-tang of the river -- surely half imagined -- and the keenness of the buffeting wind as he came out of the station. Seconds later he saw Conrad Ackroyd standing on the kerb at the corner of Dacre Street and glancing from left to right with that air of mingled anxiety and hope typical of a man waiting to hail a taxi.”

„Im Dorf sprach man seit Tagen über nichts anderes mehr. Der Fernseher lief heiß, und Großvater begriff nicht, weshalb ein Mensch, der doch soeben gestorben war und den man bereits unter die Erde gelegt hatte, auf dem Bildschirm hin- und herlaufen konnte. Was in Großvaters Kopf vorging, ob er diese Erscheinung Titos in die Welt der Magie, der Engel und der Teufel verbannte oder ob er sie als ein Mysterium der modernen Welt wahrnahm, werde ich nie erfahren. Ich weiß nur, daß ihn die flimmernden Bilder irritierten. Insbesondere jene berühmten Liebesszenen in amerikanischen Filmen, die ihn wie ein pythischer Wasserfall überrollten. Eine Kußszene auf dem Bildschirm fand für ihn tatsächlich statt, und er schimpfte über die Unverfrorenheit der Frauen, die sich nicht darum scherten, daß er ihnen beim Küssen zusah. Diese ver-teufelten Lippen, die sich nicht mehr voneinander zu lösen schienen, kamen in seinen Augen einer Entweihung gleich. Mein anfängliches Glucksen über Großvaters Unwissenheit verstummte bald. Auf seine Frage, was denn die Bilder anderes als die Wahrheit selbst seien, fiel mir nichts ein. Konnte diese Kußszene denn etwas anderes bedeuten ? Gab sie wirklich nur vor, echt zu sein, und hielt sie denn das Versprechen nicht ? An diesem Tag waren die amerikanischen Kußszenen vom Bildschirm verschwunden. Man ersetzte sie durch rote Nelken, durch Generäle und schwarz gekleidete Nachrichtensprecher, durch Kinder, die Gedichte für den Herrn Josip auswendig lernten und ihre niedlichen Köpfe vor Tausenden von Kameras reckten. Die stolzen Mütter weinten und putzten sich synchron die Nasen, die von der ständigen Reiberei wund geworden waren. Der Tod des Genossen hatte sie – hatte uns alle – in tiefe Trauer gehüllt. Josip Broz-Tito war tot, der Mann, der mit seiner riesigen runden Brille in meinem Klassenraum hing und dessen Bild ich als Anstecker bei meiner Pionierseinweihung erhalten hatte, zusammen mit dem partisanenartigen Mützchen, dem roten Stern und dem roten Halstuch. Sein durchdringender Blick schmückte jedes Schusterlädchen, jeden noch so blutigen Metzgerladen, jedes verstaubte Lehrerzimmer eines weltvergessenen Bergdorfs, jedes Einkaufszentrum, jedes Amtszimmer und jedes Schulzimmer.“

“Irina Bazili ging bij Lark House aan de slag in 2010, drieëntwintig jaar jong en zonder veel illusies, want al sinds haar vijftiende zwierf ze van stad tot stad als een meisje van twaalf ambachten en dertien ongelukken. Ze kon niet vermoeden dat ze in dit bejaardencentrum bij Berkeley haar ideale werkkring zou vinden en dat ze in de drie jaar die volgden even gelukkig zou worden als in haar kindertijd, voordat het noodlot haar toekomst had vergald. Lark House was rond 1950 gesticht om bejaarden met een schamel inkomen een menswaardig onderdak te bieden en had door onduidelijke oorzaken vanaf het begin progressieve intellectuelen, overtuigde esoterici en minder geslaagde kunstenaars aangetrokken. Met de jaren was het in een aantal opzichten veranderd, maar nog steeds liet het ieder van zijn bewoners naar draagkracht betalen om zo in theorie een vorm van maatschappelijke en raciale diversiteit na te streven. “June 19th, 1919 There's likely some polished way of starting a story like this, a clever bit of gaming that'd sucker people in surer than the best banco feeler in town. But the truth is that I haven't got the quick tongue or the slick wit for that kind of game. Words haven't figured much in my life, and though over the years I've met many of what the world counts to be the big thinkers and talkers of our times, I've stayed what most would call a plain man. And so a plain way of starting will suit me well. The first thing to do, along these plain lines, is to say why I've closed the shop up and come into the back office on a night when there's still plenty of business that might be done. It was a gay night, many folks'd say; but for some of us, it was a strange and dangerous time, when we learned things about human behavior that most sensible people would never want to know. Hij groeide op in Marrakesh en woont sinds 1996 in Brussel, waar hij werkt bij het Ministerie voor Franstalig Onderwijs. Hij publiceerde drie dichtbundels in het Arabisch en een in het Frans getiteld “Transparences” (2006). Hij organiseert een jaarlijks Arabisch literair festival, Al-Salon al-Adabi in Brussel. Adnan runt de Brusselse Arabische literaire salon. Zijn gedichten zijn vertaald in het Frans en het Spaans. Hij won de tweede prijs op het Internationaal Arabisch Festival van Monodrama in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten 2011.
