Georg Trakl werd op 3 februari 1887 in het conducteurshuis aan de Waagplatz 2 in Salzburg geboren. Zijn vader, Tobias Trakl, was een handelaar in ijzerwaren en zijn moeder, die ook psychische problemen had, was Maria Catharina Trakl, (meisjesnaam Halik). Voorts had hij nog drie broers en drie zussen. Margarethe (doorgaans Grethe genoemd) stond hem het naast, zelfs zodanig dat sommigen een incestueuze verhouding vermoeden. Zijn jeugd bracht hij door in Salzburg. Vervolgens bezocht hij van 1897 tot 1905 het humanistische gymnasium. Om toch een academische opleiding te kunnen volgen, werkte hij tot 1908 in de praktijk bij een apotheker. Sommigen vermoedden dat hij dit vooral deed om zichzelf opiaten te kunnen verschaffen. Bij het uitbreken van WO I werd Trakl als medicus naar het front in Galicië (heden ten dage in Oekraïne en Polen) gestuurd. Zijn gemoedsschommelingen leidden tot geregelde uitbraken van depressie, die verergerd werden door de afschuw die hij voelde voor de verzorging van de ernstig verwonde soldaten. De spanning en druk dreven hem ertoe een suïcidepoging te ondernemen, welke zijn kameraden nochtans verhinderden. Hij werd in een militair ziekenhuis opgenomen in Kraków, alwaar hij onder strikt toezicht geplaatst werd.Trakl verzonk daar in nog zwaardere depressies en schreef Ficker om advies. Ficker overtuigde hem ervan dat hij contact moest opnemen met Wittgenstein, die inderdaad op weg ging na Trakls bericht te hebben ontvangen. Op 4 november 1914, drie dagen voordat Wittgenstein aan zou komen, overleed hij echter aan een overdosis cocaïne
Paul Celan
Paul Celan werd onder de naam Paul Antschel op 23 november 1920 geboren in Czernowitz, toentertijd de hoofdstad van de Roemeense Boekovina, nu behorend bij de Oekraïne. Paul Celans ouders waren Duitssprekende joden die hun zoon joods opvoedden en hem naar Duitse christelijke scholen stuurden. In 1942 werden Celans ouders door de Duitse bezetter naar een werkkamp gedeporteerd en daar vermoord. Hijzelf wist aanvankelijk onder te duiken, maar moest vanaf juli 1942 in een werkkamp dwangarbeid verrichten. Celan overleefde de oorlog. Via Boekarest en Wenen vestigde Celan zich in 1948 in Parijs. Daar was hij werkzaam als dichter, vertaler en doceerde hij aan de prestigieuze Ecole Normale Supérieure. Vermoedelijk op 20 april 1970 beëindigde hij zijn leven zelf door in de Seine te springen.
Gerard Reve

Simon Vestdijk
Simon Vestdijk (Harlingen, 17 oktober 1898 – Utrecht, 23 maart 1971) was een Nederlands romancier, dichter, essayist en vertaler. Zijn jeugd te Harlingen en Leeuwarden beschreef hij later in de Anton Wachter-cyclus. Van jongs af aan logeerde hij regelmatig bij zijn grootouders in Amsterdam, waar hij zich in 1917 aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam inschrijft als student in de medicijnen. Tijdens zijn studie die van 1917 tot 1927 duurde, leerde hij Jan Slauerhoff kennen.Tot 1932 is hij als arts in praktijken door heel Nederland werkzaam. In 1932 volgt zijn officiële schrijversdebuut met de uitgave van de bundel Verzen in De Vrije Bladen. Doorslaggevend voor Vestdijks uiteindelijke keuze voor de literatuur is zijn ontmoeting in 1932 met Eddy Du Perron en Menno ter Braak. Deze ontmoeting had tot resultaat dat hij redactielid werd van het tijdschrift Forum Kort daarop, in 1933, wordt zijn eerste novelle, De oubliette, uitgegeven. In hetzelfde jaar schrijft hij Kind tussen vier vrouwen, dat, eerst geweigerd door de uitgever, later de basis zal vormen voor de eerste drie delen van de Anton Wachter-romans. In 1951 ontvangt Vestdijk de P.C. Hooftprijs voor zijn in 1947 verschenen roman De vuuraanbidders. In 1957 wordt hij voor het eerst door het PEN-centrum voor Nederland voorgedragen voor de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur, die hij echter nooit zal krijgen. Op 20 maart 1971 wordt hem de Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren toegekend, maar voor hij deze kan ontvangen overlijdt hij op 23 maart te Utrecht op 72-jarige leeftijd. Vestdijk was auteur van ca. 200 boeken. Vanwege deze enorme productie noemde de dichter Adriaan Roland Holst hem 'de man die sneller schrijft dan God kan lezen'. Andere belangrijke boeken van Simon Vestdijk zijn: "Kind van stad en land" (1936), "Meneer Visser's hellevaart" (1936), "Ierse nachten" (1946), "De toekomst de religie" (1947), "Pastorale 1943" (1948), "De koperen tuin" (1950), "Ivoren wachters" (1951), "Essays in duodecimo" (1952) en "Het genadeschot" (1964).
K.P. Kavafis K.P. Kavafis werd als kind van Griekse ouders, afkomstig uit Konstantinopel, geboren in 1863 in Alexandrië (tot vandaag een Griekse enclave) waar hij ook het grootste deel van zijn leven woonde en werkte. Twee jaar na de dood van zijn vader verhuist het gezin in 1872 naar Engeland om na een verblijf van vijf jaar naar Alexandrië terug te keren. Vanwege ongeregeldheden in Egypte vlucht het gezin in 1882 naar Konstantinopel, om na drie jaar opnieuw naar Alexandrië terug te gaan. In de jaren die volgen maakt Kavafis reizen naar Parijs, Londen en in 1901 zijn eerste reis naar Griekenland, in latere jaren gevolgd door nog enkele bezoeken. Op de dag van zijn zeventigste verjaardag, in 1933 sterft Kavafis in Alexandrië. De roem kwam voor Kavafis pas na zijn dood, dus postuum. Deels is dat toe te schrijven aan zijn eigen handelswijze. Hij was uiterst terughoudend met de publicatie van zijn gedichten, liet af en toe een enkel gedicht afdrukken in een literair tijdschrift, gaf in eigen beheer enkele bundels met een stuk of twintig gedichten uit en het merendeel van zijn poëzie schonk hij op losse bladen aan zijn beste vrienden.
Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann, de jongere broer van Heinrich Mann, werd geboren op 6 juni 1875 in Lübeck. Hij was de tweede zoon van de graankoopman Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann welke later één van de senatoren van Lübreck werd. Zijn moeder Julia (geboren da Silva-Bruhns) was Duits-Braziliaans van Portugees Kreoolse afkomst. In 1894 debuteerde Thomas Mann met de novelle "Gefallen". Toen Thomas Mann met 21 jaar eindelijk volwassen was en hem dus geld van zijn vaders erfenis toestond - hij kreeg ongeveer 160 tot 180 goldmark per jaar - besloot hij dat hij genoeg had van al die scholen en instituties en werd onafhankelijk schrijver. Kenmerkend voor zijn stijl zijn de ironie, de fenomenale taalbeheersing en de minutieuze detailschildering. Manns reputatie in Duitsland was sterk wisselend. Met zijn eerste roman, Buddenbrooks (1901), had hij een enorm succes, maar door zijn sceptische houding tegenover Duitsland na de Eerste Wereldoorlog veranderde dit volledig. Stelde hij zich tot aan de jaren twintig apolitiek op (Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen, 1918), meer en meer raakte hij bij het Politiek gebeuren betrokken. Zijn afkeer van het nationaal socialisme groeide, zijn waarschuwingen werden veelvuldiger en heftiger. In 1944 accepteerde hij het Amerikaanse staatsburgerschap. Tussen 1943 en 1947 schreef Mann Doktor Faustus (zie Faust), de roman van de 'Duitse ziel' in de gecamoufleerd geschilderde omstandigheden van de 20ste eeuw. In 1947 bezocht hij voor het eerst sinds de Oorlog Europa, twee jaar later pas Duitsland. In 1952 vertrok hij naar Zwitserland. Op 12 augustus 1955 stierf hij in Zürich. Twintig jaar na zijn dood, in aug. 1975, is zijn literaire nalatenschap geopend: dagboekaantekeningen van 15 maart 1933 tot 29 juli 1955, alsmede notities uit de jaren 1918 tot en met 1921.Belangrijke werken zijn: Der Zauberberg, Der Tod in Venedig, Dokter Faustus , Joseph und seine Brüder en Die Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull.
Rainer Maria Rilke
Rilke werd op 4 december 1875 geboren in Praag. Hij had al naam gemaakt als dichter met zijn bundels Das Stundenbuch en Das Buch der Bilder, toen hij de literaire wereld versteld deed staan en wereldfaam verwierf met de publicatie van zijn twee delen Neue Gedichte in 1907 en 1908. Hij verzamelde daarin het beste werk uit een van zijn vruchtbaarste periodes, die hij grotendeels doorbracht in Parijs. Rilke was daar diep onder de indruk gekomen van Rodin, bij wie hij een tijdlang in dienst was als particulier secretaris. Rodin, zei hij later, had hem leren kijken. Dit kijken kwam neer op intense concentratie, om het mysterie te kunnen zien ‘achter de schijnbare werkelijkheid'. Latere en rijpere werken als Duineser Elegien (1912-1923) en het ronduit schitterende Die Sonette an Orfeus (1924) illustreren Rilkes metafysische visie op het onzegbare, dat haar verwoording vindt in een hermetische muzikale taal. Op 29 december 1926 overlijdt Rilke in het sanatorium in Val-Mont aan de gevolgen van leukemie. Enkele dagen later wordt hij, overeenkomstig zijn wens, begraven op het kerkhof van Raron.

“Hoe kon men op televisie na zijn dood nog vol lof beelden laten zien van zijn `heldhaftige' overwinning in 1999 in Luik-Bastenaken-Luik, als een groot deel van de wielerwereld toen al wist wat David Millar later in zijn boek Koersen in het duister schreef — dat VDB de avond voor La Doyenne elf slaappillen Stilnox had genomen en niet eens meer op zijn benen kon staan of praten? Hoe kon men deze man nog 'god' noemen als bleek dat hij renners uitlachte die geen verboden middelen durfden te nemen? Ik begon de verslaving, de zelfoverschatting, de list en het bedrog van VDB als symptomatisch te zien voor minstens een deel van de wielrennerij. Het moet vanaf dat moment geweest zijn dat ik met cynisme naar de koers begon te kijken. Renners leken wel goden die door hun aanbidders ook hun grootste zonden worden vergeven. Eventjes waren de fans kwaad, maar vervolgens werden de helden van alle verantwoordelijkheid ontslagen door die in de schoenen te schuiven van het geld, de roem, het gebroken sleutelbeen, de kapotte knie, de wielercoach of de media. Ik wist wel dat renners vaak pionnen waren in een groter spel van ploegleiders en commercie. Ik wist ook dat niet alle renners in hetzelfde bedje ziek waren en sommige het spel wel eerlijk speelden — maar waarnaar zat ik in dat geval te kijken? Sport, of slechte cinema? Ik betrapte mezelf erop dat ik steeds vaker cynische, harde opmerkingen maakte over een renner die een explosieve prestatie neerzette: er was vast weer iets aan de hand; wacht maar een paar maanden; we zullen er nog wel van horen. Vaak kreeg ik gelijk. Ik kon de beslissing van de Duitse zenders ARD en ZDF om de Ronde van Frankrijk in 2007 wegens dopingperikelen niet langer uit te zenden begrijpen, en zelf keek ik op een bepaald moment ook niet meer. De Ronde van Frankrijk van 2010 liet ik aan me voorbijgaan, en achteraf bleek dat er met winnaar Alberto Contador ook iets 'niet pluis' was.”

Il avait tout fait pour l'empêcher de se lancer dans cette vaine croisade mais quand il l'avait vu prendre un congé sans solde au 36 et acheter son billet d'avion, il avait compris que rien ne l'arrêterait. Il avait alors décidé de l'accompagner : après tout, lui aussi avait quelque chose à faire au Katanga... — On y va, patron ? Il se retourna. Michel se tenait au bord du tarmac, un gros trousseau de clés à la main, comme si l'aéroport dans son ensemble était sa propriété. C'était un petit Noir malingre au cou de girafe. Surnommé la Touffe, en raison de son énorme tignasse crépue, il portait un pantalon de tergal et une chemise aux motifs criards. Michel était l'homme de confiance de Morvan — ce qui demeurait à Lubumbashi une notion relative. Il suivit le Black sous le soleil accablant. On n'éprouvait plus rien ici sinon une asphyxie de lumière, une blancheur écrasante qui figeait toute pensée, tout espoir. Le matériel était remisé dans un hangar fermé à double tour, surveillé par des soldats. La Touffe déverrouilla la porte et la fit glisser sur son rail. — Et voilà ! La lumière révéla deux camions à benne Renault, trois 4 x 4 Toyota vidés de leurs sièges passagers — le tout racheté le mois précédent à d'autres groupes miniers. Morvan avait fait voter ce budget à l'assemblée générale de Coltano, compagnie minière qu'il avait lui-même fondée dans les années 90, prétextant une nécessaire remise à niveau des installations autour de Kolwezi. En réalité, il avait dans l'idée d'exploiter en douce de nouveaux filons découverts par ses experts géologues. Une vraie manne. Il s'approcha et vérifia que les roues, les volants et les moteurs étaient toujours en place. — Le carburant ? — Là-bas. Il n'alla pas jusqu'à vérifier les barils : il y avait plus important. »

In warm weather the garage door duti-fully lumbered up and over the section of bent track, but below freezing it invariably stuck and you had to get out, remote in hand, and manually yank the door past the spot where it caught. Within a few degrees of freezing, though, it was anybody’s guess, so Ray pressed the remote and opened the driver’s-side door, pre-pared to get out if he needed to. When the door shuddered past the critical point and up along the ceiling, he closed the car door again, noticing as he did so that Paula, his wife, was watching him with her O ye of little faith expression. Pulling inside, he made sure to leave her enough room to get out. Two-car was how the garage had been described when they bought the house. Ray, himself a realtor and all too familiar with such dubious representations, had squinted at the phrase in the listing information, then at the garage itself. It was probably true it could hold two small sedans, but with anything larger you’d need to pull the first car in at an angle to have enough space for the second vehicle. He’d considered calling Connie, the seller’s agent, on this, but he liked her, in particular how she confessed right up front that she’d just gotten her license. She seemed genu-inely terrified of saying the wrong thing, of disclosing something that by law wasn’t supposed to be mentioned or of failing to dis-close something else that was mandatory. She’d gone into real estate, she claimed, because she liked helping people find what they wanted, and she seemed blithely innocent of the fact that most people had no idea what that was, especially the ones who were defiantly confident they did. Ray doubted she would last long and wasn’t surprised when, a year later, he ran into her and was told she’d embarked upon a degree in social work. Anyway, Paula had loved the house and didn’t want to see the not-quite-two-car garage as a problem, though she conceded they’d probably have to find someplace else for the lawn mower and the other stuff they usually stuck in there. She argued they’d be okay if they went slow and paid attention, especially at backing out. When for the record Ray expressed grave doubts about this as a long-term solution, she asked, “What are you saying? That we’re careless people?”

« La paix ne tarde pas à se faire entre Meaulnes et le bohémien. C’est qu’il y a entre eux des liens secrets qu’ils découvrent. Le bohémien a été lui aussi dans le domaine merveilleux et il donne à son nouvel ami quelques indications - d’ailleurs encore insuffisantes - sur la route qui y conduit. Meaulnes pourtant ne le reconnaît que trop tard, qu’au moment où sans en rien dire à personne, il s’apprête à s’enfuir. C’était Frantz de Galais, le jeune fiancé de la fête, avec qui Meaulnes s’était rencontré le soir de la débandade. Hélas ! il a décampé trop tôt ; Meaulnes n’aura appris de lui que l’adresse à Paris de la jeune fille dont il est amoureux. Muni de ce seul renseignement, Meaulnes laisse François et part pour Paris. Mais à l’adresse indiquée il n’y a personne : la maison est vide. Meaulnes reste dans la grande ville, oisif et désespéré, à la merci de toutes les tentations. Et c’est François que le hasard, longtemps après, met tout à coup sur la piste du domaine merveilleux. Il le retrouve sans aucune difficulté ; la jeune fille y est toujours ; il la voit ; il comprend qu’elle n’a cessé de penser à Meaulnes. Le rêve de toute leur adolescence se résout ainsi en éléments tout ordinaires, tout prochains, tout faciles à saisir. Il semble qu’il n’y ait plus qu’à aller chercher Meaulnes et que l’aventure soit finie. Mais Meaulnes, que Seurel en effet ramène, est étrangement nerveux et rebelle ; il manque même de détruire par son humeur inexplicable le bonheur que son ami lui a préparé et qu’il n’a plus qu’à cueillir. Dein Atem hetzt in atemlosen Sätzen dahin, wo ich seit je gewesen bin – doch hin ist hin, da bleiben nichts als Fetzen
von Traum und Trauer, Wut und Widersinn, die wolln uns weitertreiben, schleifen, wetzen. Und kleine Terzen wehen drüber hin

“Thunder shook the unlit cavern as an immense, blue-white spark jumped between a pair of towering, metal columns. Instead of fading, the shimmering charge split in two and the twin streams of plasma began to circle their respective pillars. They moved like flames chasing the wind, racing around the columns and snaking their way upward toward the underside of a curved, metallic dome. There, they swirled together like the arms of a spiral galaxy, joining each other once again before vanishing in a final, eye-searing flash. Darkness followed. Ozone lingered in the air. On the floor of the cavern, a group of men and women stood motionless, night-blind from the display. The flash hadbeen impressive, but they’d all seen electricity before. Every one of them expected something more. "Is that it?" a gruff voice asked. The words came from Brigadier General Hal Cortland, a burly, squat figure of a man. They were directed at thirty-eightyear-old Daniel Watterson, a slight, blond-haired man wearing spectacles who stood by the controls of the great machine from which the artificial lightning had come. Watterson studied a bank of dimly lit gauges. "I'm not actually sure," he whispered to himself. No one had ever gotten this far, not even Michael Faraday or the great Nikola Tesla. But if Watterson was right—if his calculations and his theory and years of serving as Tesla’s apprentice had led him to understand what was about to occur—then the display of light they’d just witnessed should be only the beginning. He switched off the main power, stepped away from the controls, and pulled the wire-rimmed glasses from his face. Despite the darkness, he could make out a soft blue glow coming from the columns. He raised his eyes to the dome above. An effervescent hue could be seen coursing around its inner surface. “Well?” Cortland demanded. Back at the console, one of the needles ticked up. Watterson saw it from the corner of his eye. “No, General,” he said quietly, “I don’t think it’s quite finished.”

„Cornwall is a wrecker's coast. But when I left for my holiday I thought of the wrecker as a picturesque ruffian of several centuries ago who lured ships to their destruction with false beacons and waded out into the angry seas to knife the crew and unload the cargo as the vessel broke up. I did not think of Cornwall as being still a wrecker's coast, and I knew nothing of the modern wreckers I was to find havened beneath the shadow of those grim cliffs. I had intended going to the Lakes, but fate decreed that the gathering storm of the Polish crisis should keep my companion at his desk in the newsroom and that I should pick on the Lizard for my holiday. I stayed at Church Cove, where white, thatched cottages, massed with flowers, straggled down a valley to the dark cleft of the cove with the round capstan house on its shingle beach rotting because no boats came. The Kerris's cottage, where I stayed, was at the upper end of the village and backed on to a farm. The cottage was really two cottages thrown into one to make a guest house. Kerris, who had done the knocking together himself, was very proud of the result. Before I had been there half an hour he was taking me over the place, showing me with his toothless mouth agrin all the pieces he had obtained from the Clan Malcolm which had been wrecked that winter. He had relaid the floors throughout the cottage during the winter and as far as I could gather the work had all been done with wood from the Clan Malcolm. There were brass doorsteps, chairs and ship's lamps, all from the same luckless ship. He was a great wrecker, was Kerris. When I expressed my amazement at the amount of stuff he had collected from that one ship, he shook his head with a ruefill smile. 'Ar, she were a grand wreck,' he said. 'We'll never see the like o' her again, sir—never. She came ashore this side of the Lizard. Caught on the rocks, she was, and broke her back. She was no use for salvage purposes, so Lloyd's told the Cadgwith people that if they liked to go out and salvage what they could and put it up for auction in the village they might collect a percentage of the proceeds: He shook his head again. „Als ich an einem nasskalten Apriltag im Döblinhaus ankam, begrüßte mich ein Graf. Graf von Flotow, der in seinem Schriftstellerleben einen bürgerlichen Namen trägt, wahrte an diesem Abend die romantische Tradition und sagte, es würde im Fachwerkhaus spuken. Nach einigen nebulösen Andeutungen seinerseits und verdutzten Nachfragen meinerseits beschrieb er eine Begegnung mit einem hexenähnlichen weiblichen Wesen, das nachts an seiner Schlafzimmertür „gelehnt“ und ihn durch sein „Herschauen“ geweckt habe. Sein Hund sei auch wach geworden und habe den Geist heftig angebellt. Ich zog in die zuvor vom Grafen bewohnte Dachwohnung, wo ich nachts des Öfteren von unerwarteten Geräuschen geweckt wurde. Mal war es lautes Sirenengeheul, mal heftige Kratzgeräusche aus dem Hohlraum zwischen Wand und Dachboden, mal jämmerliches Quieken von Schweinen, die in den Morgenstunden auf einem Lastwagen zum Schlachthaus gefahren wurden. Frau Keyn war es, die mit ihrer robusten Bodenständigkeit allen Spuk vertrieb; sie war die sichere Bastion, der gute Geist des Ortes. Wir trafen uns jeden Mittag in der Küche zum gemütlichen Plausch. Durch ihre Gegenwart strömte ein nordisch klares Licht in das morsche Domizil. Ich erzählte Frau Keyn eine neue Spukgeschichte, die sich gerade in der Nacht zuvor ereignet hatte: Gegen halb zwei hatte sich das alte Transistorradio, das immer in der Küche stand, von selbst eingeschaltet und mit lauter Schlagermusik alle Bewohner geweckt. Frau Keyn lachte und wies ihrerseits mit ernster Miene auf die Rattenplage hin, die dem alten Haus zusetzte. Sie legte ihren Besen zur Seite und bat mich ihr zu folgen. Forsch erklomm sie die knarrende Treppe und ging auf eine Kammertür zu, die ich noch nicht bemerkt hatte. Knapper als gewohnt formulierte sie ihr Anliegen: „Mach mal auf!“ Sie gab mir einen Schlüssel, mit dem ich die Tür problemlos öffnen konnte. Ich schaute in eine Abstellkammer, in der sich auf staubigen Tischen und Bänken ausrangiertes Werkzeug und Gerümpel stapelte. Then he came out, in 36, and we met up again. He wouldnt come to ourhouse, not then, because at the time you had to be careful, you couldnt be seen together. I would see him outside, we would go forwalks and . . . I dont know if my fatherknew about it at first or not, but he didnt like the idea at all, because FULVI Well, he had neverapproved of anyone. GINZBURG He had never approved of anyone. But this time he really didnt approve. He said that Leone was ugly, then that he was broke, then that he was in danger. Basically, he didnt like him one bit: well, then at a certain point we got married, and he accepted it. Then afterward he liked him. He would say that Leone was very bright, very well-educated, and laterhe liked him, but early on there was . . . you know . . . something he didnt like. SINIBALDI Leone didnt have qualities that brought solidity, perhaps . . . GINZBURG Right. He had none of those. SINIBALDI But in reality he was an intellectual of great solidity, of great renown. Im thinking of that debate on the subject of musical interpretation. GINZBURG He was one of the real intellects of his time. Elle diasit: "Il n'y a pas de justice sans justesse des termes", rejoignant ainsi Camus qui écrivit: "Il ne faut pas dire: justice est faite, mais: on lui a coupé le coup." Et concluait: "Appelons les choses par leur nom" Cette règle d'or littéraire et morale, cette à la fois simple et difficile vertu d'exactitude, fait non seulement les vrais écrivains, mais aussi les citoyens courageux."

Shloyme quickly fastened the rope onto a hook, stood up next to the door, put the stool in place, clambered up onto it, wound the rope around his thin, quivering neck, kicked away the stool with his last strength, managing with his dimming eyes to glance at the town he had not left once in sixty years, and hung.”

De Congolese dichter, schrijver en journalist Antoine-Roger Bolambawerd geboren in Boma in de provincie Bas-Congo (tegenwoordig Congo Central) op 13 juli 1913. Al tijdens zijn vroege schooljaren toonde hij een groeiende belangstelling voor literatuur. Na het voltooien van zijn studie, werkte hij voor het FOREAMI (Koningin Elizabeth fonds voor medische hulp aan inheemse volkeren), daarna werd hij op voordracht van een hogere officier van het Belgische koloniale bestuur benoemd tot hoofdredacteur van het tijdschrift Brousse die net was opgericht. In deze periode begon hij zijn carrière als schrijver, essayist en dichter. In 1939 stuurde hij zijn werk “Les aventures de Ngoy”, de legendarische held van Bangala, naar de literaire wedstrijd van de l’Association des Amis de l’Art indigène, maar hij viel niet in de prijzen. In 1952 maakte Bolamba met een delegatie van Congolese schrijvers een officiële reis naar Europa, waar hij andere schrijvers uit zwart Afrika en het Caribisch gebied ontmoette. Maar het was in 1954 in Leopoldville dat Bolamba de Guinese dichter Leon-Gontran Damas ontmoette, die op een officiële reis was. Over deze ontmoeting zal Bolamba zijn eerste artikel schrijven in het blad “La voix du Congolais” die hij leidde. Kort na zijn ontmoeting met Damas publiceerde hij “Esanzo. Chants pour mon pays”. In 1956 nam hij met de schrijver Paul Lomami Tshibamba deel aan het congres van zwarte schrijvers en kunstenaars in Parijs rond het thema “Négritude”. In de jaren die volgen, zal hij zijn carrière als schrijver tussen haakjes zetten om zich aan de politiek te wijden. Hij werd in 1959 vice-president van de Parti de l’indépendance et de la liberté. Na de onafhankelijkheid zal hij posities in verschillende regeringen bekleden. Hij werd door Patrice Lumumba benoemd tot staatssecretaris voor informatie en culturele aangelegenheden, en later minister van Informatie in de regering van Adoula in 1963. Een van zijn beroemde gedichten “Lokolé” is geïnspireerd door de Mongoolse volkstraditie.
