“Es ist ein Jammer, dachte Holt, als er sich unlustig und frierend mit kaltem Wasser wusch und dabei in den Spiegel starrtet es ist ein großer Jammer: Wolzow und ich, wir würden die ganze Schule beherrschen, wenn wir Freunde wären, denn die älteren Jahrgänge sind beim Militär, wir sind die oberste Klasse. Er trocknete sich ab. Er befühlte Wangen und Oberlippe der Bart ließ sich Zeit, das war Holts Kummer. Er rasierte sich nur aus Prestigegründen. Mit sechzehneinhalb noch fast ohne Bart... eine Schande! Kein Wunder, dass er sich mit so einer glatten Haut nicht an die Marie Krüger herantraute, wenn sie dann und wann wie eine Katze in der Badeanstalt herumstrich. Immerhin: als er ihr kürzlich begegnet war, da - er besann sich genau -hatte sie ihn mit einem verwirrenden Blick angeschaut... Außerdem: kratzte es am Kinn nicht doch schon ganz ordentlich? Einsfünfundsiebzig groß, siebenundsechzig Kilo schwer, schmal, doch muskulös, aber neben Wolzow, der einsachtundachtzig maß und fast neunzig Kilo wog, eben doch beinahe knabenhaft. Dunkeläugig, dunkelhaarig sah er sich im Spiegel, und das Haar war sehr widerborstig und ringelte sich gern in die Höhe. Er kämmte sich, er kleidete sich an. Der Kopfschmerz war vergangen, nur ein dumpfer Druck wollte nicht von der Stirn weichen. Auch machte das Schlingen Beschwerden, und der Mund war trocken. Wolzow galt seit eh und je als der größte Flegel der Schule, zweimal Consilium, das dritte Mal nur durch Intervention seines Generalsonkels dem Hinauswurf entgangen. - Und ich Idiot komm neu in die Klasse und lauf ihm den Rang ab, statt seine Freundschaft zu suchen! Das wär ein Freund, Gilbert Wolzow, ein Freund wie Hagen von Tronje, Winnetou oder Roller! Er war fertig, er stopfte ein paar Bücher in die Aktentasche, dann lief er die Treppen hinab.
Das Haus gehörte den Schwestern Eulalia und Veronika Dengelmann, eigentlich deren Mutter, einer fünfundachtzigjährigen Greisin, die wegen Altersschwachsinn entmündigt worden war. Die beiden Schwestern, zweiundfünfzig und sechsundvierzig Jahre alt, unterhielten eine Pension, "Kost und Logis für alleinstehende Herren". Holt wurde verwöhnt, da seine Mutter großzügig zahlte; er war zeitlebens verwöhnt worden. Seit zwei Monaten lebte er in der Pension und tyrannisierte die Schwestern. Er trat in das Wohnzimmer im Erdgeschoß und rief nach dem Kaffee. Veronika Dengelmann, die jüngere der Schwestern, das Gesicht dick mit Fett eingerieben und die Haare voller Lockenwickel, setzte die Tasse und den Teller mit Broten vor ihn hin. "Guten Morgen." Holt antwortete nicht. Er dachte: Ich bin krank. Gleich wird sie wieder anfangen: Beeilen Sie sich... Das Schlucken schmerzte, die Kehle war wund. Fräulein Dengelmann sagte: "Beeilen Sie sich! Es fällt wieder auf uns zurück, wenn Sie zu spät kommen..." Holt schob den Teller mit den Broten von sich. Durch die für trat Eulalia, in einen verwaschenen Schlafrock gewickelt. Sie hat ein Gesicht wie ein Schaf, dachte er, und Veronika sieht aus wie der Vollmond.“

“One December day in 1938, two stonemasons walked along a gravel road in the North Sydney Cemetery. They wore dungarees and flannel shirts. The hot noon sun beat down on them. The men carried two shovels, a pick and a small leather tool bag. They were looking for Lot 213 in the Presbyterian section. They went up the hill, past graves with iron railings, past the broken columns and wedding-cake angels, past glaringly white tombstones with gold and black lettering and black stones with gilt lettering. The men grumbled constantly as they walked. "Bloody silly idea," said the taller of the two. "He was always a mad bastard" said the other. "You can't do a decent job this way," said the taller man, kicking at a pebble. "He ought at least have waited until the grave settled " Up in the top end of the cemetery they came on Lot 213, marked with a lettered wooden peg. The newly-filled grave was heaped with flowers. The workmen walked round the puffed-up mould, rolled cigarettes and read some of the inscriptions on the wreaths. "Jimmy, with love from Helen," the tall workman read out aloud. "Bloody girl friend, I suppose." "He got amongst it." "Here's one with 'Nan' on it." "Do you reckon it's true about him being a Governor's son?" "Dunn. Could be." They opened up the leather bag and took out a tape, some cord and a half-dozen small wooden pegs. "A bloody waste of money, I call it," the taller workman said "Five thousand quid for a monument. Eight thousand for the pair of them. Labour man, my arse." The workmen marked an area with the tape, hammered in the small pegs, stretched string between them. Then they began to dig the trenches for the monument. The ground was hard clay and the pick continually came up against stones. The sun grew hotter and the flowers on the mound withered. They didn't say much while they worked. After they had dug and shovelled for almost an hour, they stopped for a smoke-oh. "They say Jimmy was planted lying on his face," the shorter workman, who was bald, said "Do you think it's true?" "I dunno but Joe Anderson would know. He did the job."
"I heard that too about Jimmy." "Why would he want to be planted like that, I'd like to know?" The other grimaced, tapped his forehead. "Maybe," said the bald workman. "You remember when his first wife died?" "Yes." He turned to the left and pointed. Beyond a three-row stretch of graves was a giant mausoleum of black marble. It was built like a miniature parthenon with Ionic columns twenty feet high. Behind the eight columns was an iron gate.”

“Nobody, before Andersen came along, had thought of writing such depressing Christmas stories. Even Dickens, who had killed a fair number of children in his books, didn't kill Tiny Tim. But Andersen, apparently hell-bent on ruining everybody's holidays, froze innocent children, melted loyal toys into lumps of lead, and chopped harmless fir trees who were just standing there in the forest, minding their own business, into kindling. Worse, he inspired dozens of imitators, who killed off saintly children (some of whom, I'll admit, were pretty insufferable and deserved to die) and poor people for the rest of the Victorian era. In the twentieth century, the Andersen-style tearjerker moved into the movies, which starred Margaret O'Brien (who definitely deserved to die) and other child stars, chosen for their pallor and their ability to cough. They had titles like All Mine to Give and The Christmas Tree, which tricked hapless moviegoers into thinking they were going to see a cheery Christmas movie, when really they were about little boys who succumbed to radiation poisoning on Christmas Eve. When television came along, this type of story turned into the "Very Special Christmas Episode" of various TV shows, the worst of which was Little House on the Prairie, which killed off huge numbers of children in blizzards and other pioneer-type disasters every Christmas for years. Hadn't any of these authors ever heard that Christmas stories are supposed to have happy endings? Well, unfortunately, they had, and it resulted in improbably sentimental and saccharine stories too numerous to mention. So are there any good Christmas stories out there? You bet, starting with the original. The recounting of the first Christmas (you know, the baby in the manger) has all the elements of great storytelling: drama, danger, special effects, dreams and warnings, betrayals, narrow escapes, and—combined with the Easter story—the happiest ending of all. And it's got great characters—Joseph, who's in over his head but doing the best he can; the wise men, expecting a palace and getting a stable; slimy Herod, telling them, "When you find this king, tell me where he is so I can come and worship him," and then sending out his thugs to try to murder the baby; the ambivalent innkeeper. And Mary, fourteen years old, pondering all of the above in her heart. It's a great story. No wonder it's lasted two thousand years. Modern Christmas stories I love (for a more complete list, see the end of this book) include 0. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi," T. S. Eliot's "Journey of the Magi," and Barbara Robinson's The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, about a church Nativity pageant overrun by a gang of hooligans called the Herdmans.

how much this hard pile of bones
has grown. Speak, you two.

pushing the ship forward more and more.
And the ship thrust itself high, and above,
the brows of the two Sirens with the fixed eyes looked on.

« Son royalisme, lui-même, ne me semble pas exempt d’hérésie. Malgré la persuasion qu’il met en rimes que « c’est gloire de mourir le coutelas au poin, pour son prince, et l’avoir de sa vertu témoin », mon ancêtre loue d’un accent qui m’est suspect, en son livre des Rois, le bel ordre de France, composé de toutes sortes de républiques différentes, où chaque province particulièrement s’assemble, clercs, nobles, roturiers, pour conférer librement aux affaires de conséquence. Il déclare que « régner ne se doit proprement dire que là où la raison et justice commandent. » Il admire la constitution, ou ce que l’on appelait alors le cantonnement de la République helvétique. De moi, si j’estoi Souisse, s’écrie-t-il, dans un singulier élan d’orgueil républicain, et qu’un Bourgmaistre voulût empiéter la souveraineté de mon païs, j’emploierais mille vies, si je les avois, pour maintenir ma liberté populaire.
Ces sentiments indépendants du vrai gentilhomme au regard des maximes absolues de l’Église ou de l’État, avec un fond inaltérable de bon sens et de belle humeur, je les retrouve aux siècles suivants chez plusieurs autres de mes ancêtres qui ont égale ment le goût et le don des lettres. Au xviiie siècle, cette indépendance s’imprègne de la sensibilité du temps. En 1768, mon grand-père, le vicomte Gratien de Flavigny, né le 11 octobre 1741 à Craonne en Picardie, et qui mourut en 1783, âgé de quarantedeux ans, chevalier de Saint-Louis, colonel de dragons, adressait au duc de Choiseul des Réflexions sur la désertion et sur la peine des déserteurs où il conclut à la suppression de la peine de mort, et demande des lois plus conséquentes aux sentiments ineffables du cœur et du génie français. Ayant vécu, dit-il, avec le soldat autant que le service du roi l’exigeait, autant que sa fortune, sa naissance et sa façon de penser, indépendante de son métier, le permettaient, il a observé que le Français a pour partage la fierté et l’inconstance, avec l’excellente vanité de croire sa patrie supérieure à toutes les nations de la terre. Il le déclare « généralement plus sensible à la perte de l’honneur qu’à celle de la vie ; il ne croit pas la peine de mort, appliquée aux déserteurs, efficace ; et, à ce sujet, il entre dans des considérations de l’ordre le plus élevé sur ce qu’il appelle hardiment le meurtre public.
