Georg Trakl werd op 3 februari 1887 in het conducteurshuis aan de Waagplatz 2 in Salzburg geboren. Zijn vader, Tobias Trakl, was een handelaar in ijzerwaren en zijn moeder, die ook psychische problemen had, was Maria Catharina Trakl, (meisjesnaam Halik). Voorts had hij nog drie broers en drie zussen. Margarethe (doorgaans Grethe genoemd) stond hem het naast, zelfs zodanig dat sommigen een incestueuze verhouding vermoeden. Zijn jeugd bracht hij door in Salzburg. Vervolgens bezocht hij van 1897 tot 1905 het humanistische gymnasium. Om toch een academische opleiding te kunnen volgen, werkte hij tot 1908 in de praktijk bij een apotheker. Sommigen vermoedden dat hij dit vooral deed om zichzelf opiaten te kunnen verschaffen. Bij het uitbreken van WO I werd Trakl als medicus naar het front in Galicië (heden ten dage in Oekraïne en Polen) gestuurd. Zijn gemoedsschommelingen leidden tot geregelde uitbraken van depressie, die verergerd werden door de afschuw die hij voelde voor de verzorging van de ernstig verwonde soldaten. De spanning en druk dreven hem ertoe een suïcidepoging te ondernemen, welke zijn kameraden nochtans verhinderden. Hij werd in een militair ziekenhuis opgenomen in Kraków, alwaar hij onder strikt toezicht geplaatst werd.Trakl verzonk daar in nog zwaardere depressies en schreef Ficker om advies. Ficker overtuigde hem ervan dat hij contact moest opnemen met Wittgenstein, die inderdaad op weg ging na Trakls bericht te hebben ontvangen. Op 4 november 1914, drie dagen voordat Wittgenstein aan zou komen, overleed hij echter aan een overdosis cocaïne
Paul Celan
Paul Celan werd onder de naam Paul Antschel op 23 november 1920 geboren in Czernowitz, toentertijd de hoofdstad van de Roemeense Boekovina, nu behorend bij de Oekraïne. Paul Celans ouders waren Duitssprekende joden die hun zoon joods opvoedden en hem naar Duitse christelijke scholen stuurden. In 1942 werden Celans ouders door de Duitse bezetter naar een werkkamp gedeporteerd en daar vermoord. Hijzelf wist aanvankelijk onder te duiken, maar moest vanaf juli 1942 in een werkkamp dwangarbeid verrichten. Celan overleefde de oorlog. Via Boekarest en Wenen vestigde Celan zich in 1948 in Parijs. Daar was hij werkzaam als dichter, vertaler en doceerde hij aan de prestigieuze Ecole Normale Supérieure. Vermoedelijk op 20 april 1970 beëindigde hij zijn leven zelf door in de Seine te springen.
Gerard Reve

Simon Vestdijk
Simon Vestdijk (Harlingen, 17 oktober 1898 – Utrecht, 23 maart 1971) was een Nederlands romancier, dichter, essayist en vertaler. Zijn jeugd te Harlingen en Leeuwarden beschreef hij later in de Anton Wachter-cyclus. Van jongs af aan logeerde hij regelmatig bij zijn grootouders in Amsterdam, waar hij zich in 1917 aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam inschrijft als student in de medicijnen. Tijdens zijn studie die van 1917 tot 1927 duurde, leerde hij Jan Slauerhoff kennen.Tot 1932 is hij als arts in praktijken door heel Nederland werkzaam. In 1932 volgt zijn officiële schrijversdebuut met de uitgave van de bundel Verzen in De Vrije Bladen. Doorslaggevend voor Vestdijks uiteindelijke keuze voor de literatuur is zijn ontmoeting in 1932 met Eddy Du Perron en Menno ter Braak. Deze ontmoeting had tot resultaat dat hij redactielid werd van het tijdschrift Forum Kort daarop, in 1933, wordt zijn eerste novelle, De oubliette, uitgegeven. In hetzelfde jaar schrijft hij Kind tussen vier vrouwen, dat, eerst geweigerd door de uitgever, later de basis zal vormen voor de eerste drie delen van de Anton Wachter-romans. In 1951 ontvangt Vestdijk de P.C. Hooftprijs voor zijn in 1947 verschenen roman De vuuraanbidders. In 1957 wordt hij voor het eerst door het PEN-centrum voor Nederland voorgedragen voor de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur, die hij echter nooit zal krijgen. Op 20 maart 1971 wordt hem de Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren toegekend, maar voor hij deze kan ontvangen overlijdt hij op 23 maart te Utrecht op 72-jarige leeftijd. Vestdijk was auteur van ca. 200 boeken. Vanwege deze enorme productie noemde de dichter Adriaan Roland Holst hem 'de man die sneller schrijft dan God kan lezen'. Andere belangrijke boeken van Simon Vestdijk zijn: "Kind van stad en land" (1936), "Meneer Visser's hellevaart" (1936), "Ierse nachten" (1946), "De toekomst de religie" (1947), "Pastorale 1943" (1948), "De koperen tuin" (1950), "Ivoren wachters" (1951), "Essays in duodecimo" (1952) en "Het genadeschot" (1964).
K.P. Kavafis K.P. Kavafis werd als kind van Griekse ouders, afkomstig uit Konstantinopel, geboren in 1863 in Alexandrië (tot vandaag een Griekse enclave) waar hij ook het grootste deel van zijn leven woonde en werkte. Twee jaar na de dood van zijn vader verhuist het gezin in 1872 naar Engeland om na een verblijf van vijf jaar naar Alexandrië terug te keren. Vanwege ongeregeldheden in Egypte vlucht het gezin in 1882 naar Konstantinopel, om na drie jaar opnieuw naar Alexandrië terug te gaan. In de jaren die volgen maakt Kavafis reizen naar Parijs, Londen en in 1901 zijn eerste reis naar Griekenland, in latere jaren gevolgd door nog enkele bezoeken. Op de dag van zijn zeventigste verjaardag, in 1933 sterft Kavafis in Alexandrië. De roem kwam voor Kavafis pas na zijn dood, dus postuum. Deels is dat toe te schrijven aan zijn eigen handelswijze. Hij was uiterst terughoudend met de publicatie van zijn gedichten, liet af en toe een enkel gedicht afdrukken in een literair tijdschrift, gaf in eigen beheer enkele bundels met een stuk of twintig gedichten uit en het merendeel van zijn poëzie schonk hij op losse bladen aan zijn beste vrienden.
Thomas Mann
Thomas Mann, de jongere broer van Heinrich Mann, werd geboren op 6 juni 1875 in Lübeck. Hij was de tweede zoon van de graankoopman Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann welke later één van de senatoren van Lübreck werd. Zijn moeder Julia (geboren da Silva-Bruhns) was Duits-Braziliaans van Portugees Kreoolse afkomst. In 1894 debuteerde Thomas Mann met de novelle "Gefallen". Toen Thomas Mann met 21 jaar eindelijk volwassen was en hem dus geld van zijn vaders erfenis toestond - hij kreeg ongeveer 160 tot 180 goldmark per jaar - besloot hij dat hij genoeg had van al die scholen en instituties en werd onafhankelijk schrijver. Kenmerkend voor zijn stijl zijn de ironie, de fenomenale taalbeheersing en de minutieuze detailschildering. Manns reputatie in Duitsland was sterk wisselend. Met zijn eerste roman, Buddenbrooks (1901), had hij een enorm succes, maar door zijn sceptische houding tegenover Duitsland na de Eerste Wereldoorlog veranderde dit volledig. Stelde hij zich tot aan de jaren twintig apolitiek op (Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen, 1918), meer en meer raakte hij bij het Politiek gebeuren betrokken. Zijn afkeer van het nationaal socialisme groeide, zijn waarschuwingen werden veelvuldiger en heftiger. In 1944 accepteerde hij het Amerikaanse staatsburgerschap. Tussen 1943 en 1947 schreef Mann Doktor Faustus (zie Faust), de roman van de 'Duitse ziel' in de gecamoufleerd geschilderde omstandigheden van de 20ste eeuw. In 1947 bezocht hij voor het eerst sinds de Oorlog Europa, twee jaar later pas Duitsland. In 1952 vertrok hij naar Zwitserland. Op 12 augustus 1955 stierf hij in Zürich. Twintig jaar na zijn dood, in aug. 1975, is zijn literaire nalatenschap geopend: dagboekaantekeningen van 15 maart 1933 tot 29 juli 1955, alsmede notities uit de jaren 1918 tot en met 1921.Belangrijke werken zijn: Der Zauberberg, Der Tod in Venedig, Dokter Faustus , Joseph und seine Brüder en Die Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull.
Rainer Maria Rilke
Rilke werd op 4 december 1875 geboren in Praag. Hij had al naam gemaakt als dichter met zijn bundels Das Stundenbuch en Das Buch der Bilder, toen hij de literaire wereld versteld deed staan en wereldfaam verwierf met de publicatie van zijn twee delen Neue Gedichte in 1907 en 1908. Hij verzamelde daarin het beste werk uit een van zijn vruchtbaarste periodes, die hij grotendeels doorbracht in Parijs. Rilke was daar diep onder de indruk gekomen van Rodin, bij wie hij een tijdlang in dienst was als particulier secretaris. Rodin, zei hij later, had hem leren kijken. Dit kijken kwam neer op intense concentratie, om het mysterie te kunnen zien ‘achter de schijnbare werkelijkheid'. Latere en rijpere werken als Duineser Elegien (1912-1923) en het ronduit schitterende Die Sonette an Orfeus (1924) illustreren Rilkes metafysische visie op het onzegbare, dat haar verwoording vindt in een hermetische muzikale taal. Op 29 december 1926 overlijdt Rilke in het sanatorium in Val-Mont aan de gevolgen van leukemie. Enkele dagen later wordt hij, overeenkomstig zijn wens, begraven op het kerkhof van Raron.

Niet omdat dat zo hoort, maar omdat jij me gaat leren Wat Belangrijk Is En Wat Niet. En je hoeft daar niks bijzonders voor te doen. Als ik je maar mag zien rondspetteren in bad, en schaterlachen en boos zijn en met alles spelen behalve met de karrenvracht speelgoed die je zult hebben. Tekenen op de sofa met de dikste en meest onuitwisbare viltstift die er in huis te vinden is. Het net als we gehaast zijn vrolijk in je broek doen. “Zij was Teresa Roberta Valerie van Rossum gedoopt en haar vader klaagde gewoonlijk, met een pretglans in zijn ogen, dat het geen zin had, je dochter bij het begin van haar leven een serie fraaie namen te geven, wanneer je haar onmiddellijk daarna 'Terry' wilde gaan noemen. De moeder van Teresa Roberta Valerie lachte erom, maar bleef het kleintje hardnekkig Terry noemen. Misschien vond ze al die namen te zwaar en te gewichtig voor het tere donkerogige hoop-je mens. In ieder geval bleef het altijd bij 'Terry' en het kleine meisje was een vrolijk en gelukkig kind, vooral toen later Cora, Inger en ten slotte Ronny arriveerden. Het blonde vrolijke jongetje was vanaf het begin de lieveling van de hele familie en soms merkte zijn moeder weleens bezorgd op, dat het kind de kans liep om een verwend klein mormel te worden, maar Ronny had zon zonnig karakter en was de gulheid en zachtheid in persoon, zodat niemand die klachten al te zwaar opnam. Terry had zich altijd echt 'de oudste' gevoeld, die, hoe dol ze ook mee kon doen met de wilde spelletjes van de anderen, tenslotte toch de verantwoordelijkheid voor de drie jongere kinderen bleef voelen. „Kom maar bij Terry," zei ze beschermend, wanneer Ronny een enkele keer verdriet had. „Terry kan je immers altijd helpen!" Mevrouw Van Rossum keek op een zonnige morgen, toen de familie op het punt stond om met vakantie te gaan, naar buiten, omdat ze Ronny hoorde huilen. Cora wilde hem troosten, maar de kleine jon-gen trok zich los. „Ik wil naar Terry... Terry moet me helpen!" brulde hij. Terry, klein en tenger voor haar twaalf jaren, kwam haastig aandra-ven en hurkte bij haar broertje neer. „Stil maar, Ronny, zo erg is het toch niet?" Ze wreef deskundig over een blonde krullenbol, die er gelukkig onbeschadigd uitzag. „De pijn is alweer weg... kijk, daar vliegt ze... hoog in de lucht!" „Ik zie niks!" pruilde het ventje, met zijn handje aan zijn hoofd, maar hij liet zich toch getroost door zijn zusje meetrekken naar de zand-bak. „Het verveelt me nooit om te zien hoe Terry met Ronny optrekt," zei mevrouw Van Rossum. „Ze doet het zo leuk en vanzelfsprekend, zonder op de bemoeizuchtige kopie van een volwassen mens te lij-ken. Sometimes it’s just a tremor of delight, more often long and bitter pain. At other times all sighs and tears. And sometimes even boredom. That’s the saddest kind.
Some time in the past I saw a rose-red shade. It stood by the entrance to a house facing Prague’s railway station, eternally swathed in smoke.
We used to sit there by the window. I held her delicate hands and talked of love. I’m good at that! She’s long been dead. The red lights were winking down by the track.
As soon as the wind sprang up a little it blew away the grey veil and the rails glistened like the strings of some monstrous piano. At times you could also hear the whistle of steam and the puffing of engines as they carried off people’s wretched longings from the grimy platforms to all possible destinations. Sometimes they also carried away the dead returning to their homes and to their cemeteries.
Now I know why it hurts so to tear hand from hand, lips from lips, when the stitches tear and the guard slams shut the last carriage door.

“The sun was sinking low down in the west. Bibot prepared himself to close the gates. "EN AVANT The carts," he said. Some dozen covered carts were drawn up in a row, ready to leave town, in order to fetch the produce from the country close by, for market the next morning. They were mostly well known to Bibot, as they went through his gate twice every day on their way to and from the town. He spoke to one or two of their drivers--mostly women--and was at great pains to examine the inside of the carts. "You never know," he would say, "and I'm not going to be caught like that fool Grospierre." The women who drove the carts usually spent their day on the Place de la Greve, beneath the platform of the guillotine, knitting and gossiping, whilst they watched the rows of tumbrils arriving with the victims the Reign of Terror claimed every day. It was great fun to see the aristos arriving for the reception of Madame la Guillotine, and the places close by the platform were very much sought after. Bibot, during the day, had been on duty on the Place. He recognized most of the old hats, "tricotteuses," as they were called, who sat there and knitted, whilst head after head fell beneath the knife, and they themselves got quite bespattered with the blood of those cursed aristos. "He! la mere!" said Bibot to one of these horrible hags, "what have you got there?" He had seen her earlier in the day, with her knitting and the whip of her cart close beside her. Now she had fastened a row of curly locks to the whip handle, all colours, from gold to silver, fair to dark, and she stroked them with her huge, bony fingers as she laughed at Bibot. "I made friends with Madame Guillotine's lover," she said with a coarse laugh, "he cut these off for me from the heads as they rolled down. He has promised me some more to-morrow, but I don't know if I shall be at my usual place."

Failure
Writing should be dedicated living, and ordinary heroes go lame, torn like bits of poems, bits of voices into the wind. I should be vocal for all the dumb ; for the homeless be home, for the hunted be shelter. Oh make this ink a land.
I should be forever new and tum towards them with pure surprise, endow the lonely with gifts far lovelier than this look, and cage their ragged shadows in my eyes that fly down tearward. But only ghosts people this book.

“Achter de schouders van den vader ging Adriaan door den gang. Het was hier stiller dan op straat. Van den wind was weinig meer te hooren. De gang was wit, maar het ganglampje was al op en dit maakte hier en daar goud-geele plekken op het wit, met breede, flauw goud doorwemelde, licht zwarte schaduw-randen. Het lampje was daar boven, aan het achter-einde van den gang, een kleine blank-geele vlam met een donkerder randje, met een, naar boven smaller, rond lampeglaasje, zoo doorzichtig als water, er om heen. Van boven eindigde het lampeglaasje met een open rontetje. Aan de kleêrenkast gekomen, bergden zij hier hun kleêren in. Terwijl Adriaan met reikenden rechter arm de donkere kast in was, voelend met zijn hand de andere kleêren, waar-tusschen hij zijn jas aan den kapstok hing, hield hij zijn linker hand, recht opgestrekt en met zijn voorarm ook naar boven, tegen den rug van zijn vader aan, alsof dit bepaald noodig was om zich te houden bij het reiken. Het heele huis was stil en op de trappen, tot boven toe, was niemand. Zij gingen de trap op, Adriaan achter zijn vader. De looper voelde zacht aan na de steenen van de straat en je kon de stappen bijna niet hooren. Alleen kwam nu en dan een van hun vier voeten tegen een looper-roede aan en dit gaf een geluid, dat prettig was om te hooren. Op het huiskamer-portaal brandde de groote lantaarn. Dit was het tweede licht in huis waar zij aan kwamen. Vader kwam met zijn hand naar achter zich, terwijl Adriaan achter hem liep, en nam zijn zakdoek uit een achterzak van zijn jas. Deze was groot en wit met vele kleine vlaktetjes en kromminkjes en rond gebogen vlakjes met veel butsjes en driehoekig uitstekende, alleenige dunne eindjes. Voor de huiskamerdeur zag men nu het matje liggen in het licht. Dit was klein, lankwerpig en licht bruin en met een oranje rooden rand, en was hard en zacht onder je voeten. De huiskamerdeur was nu geheel in 't licht en over-dag, als de lantaarn uit was, altijd in donker. Je zag nu de post van de deur, die om de deur heen was en die aan dezen kant van de deur meer als een deurpost gezien werd omdat er overal witte, door het lantaarnlicht licht goud gekleurde, muur om heen was. Je zoû aan den anderen kant nooit er zoo aan gedacht hebben dat de huiskamerdeur een deur was en met een post er om heen zooals dat ook bij andere deuren is. De deur was hier ook met lichter kleur geverfd dan aan den binnen-kant. Hij was gesloten. De kruk was daar en onbewegelijk stil. En boven de deur was nu het goud aan het goud-lokkig jongens-kopje veel duidelijker.”

The watermark on the ceiling is growing, changing shape – a bigger breast, a buttock, a sexy female knee – and a droplet forms, elongates and trembles, detaches itself from the ceiling, freefalls and explodes on Bunny's chest. Bunny pats at it as if he were in a dream and says, 'Libby, baby, where do we live?' ‘Brighton.' 'And where is Brighton?' he says, running a finger along the row of miniature bottles of liquor arranged on the bedside table and choosing a Smirnoff. 'Down south.' 'Which is about as far away from 'up north' as you can get without falling into the bloody sea. Now, sweetie, turn off the TV, take your Tegretol, take a sleeping tablet – shit, take two sleeping tablets – and I'll be back tomorrow. Early.' 'The pier is burning down', says Libby. 'What?' 'The West Pier, it's burning down. I can smell the smoke from here.' 'The West Pier?' Bunny empties the tiny bottle of vodka down his throat, lights another cigarette, and rises from the bed. The room heaves as Bunny is hit by the realisation that he is very drunk. With arms held out to the side and on tiptoe, Bunny moonwalks across the room to the window. He lurches, stumbles and Tarzans the faded chintz curtains until he finds his balance and steadies himself. He draws them open extravagantly and vulcanised daylight and the screaming of birds deranges the room. Bunny's pupils contract painfully as he grimaces through the window, into the light. He sees a dark cloud of starlings, twittering madly over the flaming, smoking hulk of the West Pier that stands, helpless, in the sea across from the hotel. He wonders why he hadn't seen this before and then wonders how long he has been in this room, then remembers his wife and hears her say, 'Bunny, are you there?' 'Yeah,' says Bunny, transfixed by the sight of the burning pier and the thousand screaming birds. 'The starlings have gone mad. It's such a horrible thing. Their little babies burning in their nests. I can't bear it, Bun,' says Libby, the high violin rising.”

It all looks really cool.”
“Stephanie doesn't get the joke. This is her life problem. Her life asset is her beauty. In 1971 she is twenty-five; she has perfect features, a lanky body, abundant blonde straight hair, and rather large hands and feet. Outside the home is high status, inside the home is low status. In popular myth men make decisions, women try on hats. The world is all id and precious little anima. Layla and Stephie, friends, mean to change all this. A Woman Needs a Man like a Fish Needs a Bicycle. Ho, ho, ho. Everyone knows women compete for male attention; isn't this how the problem of female bitchery arises? Catty? Felines are nothing compared with women. Perhaps this puzzle poster is advertising something? A couple of tourists, Brian and Nancy from New Zealand, emerge from the crowds in Carnaby Street. They have been rendered punch-drunk by colour, fabric, and the smell of patchouli. These are still flower-power and drug days. See feather boas, silk caftans, crushed velvet hats; lots of mauve, flares, miniskirts, platform heels; good-looking guys with lots of hair, girls with doll faces drifting behind them; wide eyes, fake lashes, white faces. Brian and Nancy both wear white Aertex shirts and tennis shoes for ease and comfort. Both are in culture shock. They flew in today from Wellington. (It took thirty-six hours.) They are accustomed to mountains, plains and sheep farms. Brian is gloriously handsome and golden. Nancy is pleasing enough to look at, but lacks eroticism: she's tall, long-limbed, and manages to appear gawky rather than slender.”
“She sometimes thought that for her, Nancy Chamberlain, the most straightforward or innocent occupation was doomed to become, inevitably, fraught with tedious complication. Take this morning. A dull day in the middle of March. All she was doing ... all she planned to do ... was to catch the 9:15 from Cheltenham to London, have lunch with her sister Olivia, perhaps pop into Harrods, and then return home. There was nothing, after all, particularly heinous about this proposal. She was fourteen and was going through, as her mother kept telling herself, that awkward age. Nancy had expected this question and had her answer ready. "I'll ask Croftway to deal with that. He ought to be able to manage on his own." Croftway was the surly gardener-handyman who lived with his wife in a flat over the stables. He hated the horses and constantly spooked them into a frenzy with his loud voice and uncouth ways, but part of his job was helping to cope with them, and this he grudgingly did, manhandling the poor lathered creatures into the horse-box, and then driving this unwieldly vehicle across country to various Pony Club events. On these occasions Nancy always referred to him as "the groom."

Parmi des plats garnis la faim m'a saisi, et j'ai eu froid à en mourir devant des poêles chauffés au rouge. Là où j'ai mis la main, il n'y avait que des tuiles qui tombaient, et la boue montait jusqu'à atteindre le bord de ma bouche, près de ma route les roses mouraient et mon souffle rendait l'été terne, je m'étonne déjà presque de la lumière du jour, de ce qu'elle brille encore parfois sur mes épaules en haillons, moi qui ai parcouru tous les six mondes, partout béni et partout cible de crachats.

"We'll come back here when I'm better." One lie. Breavman learned to pat the noses of horses tethered beside the Chalet, how to offer them sugar cubes from a flat palm. "One day we'll go riding." "But you can hardly breathe." His father collapsed that evening over his map of flags on which he plotted the war, fumbling for the capsules to break and inhale.
4 Here is a movie filled with the bodies of his family. His father aims the camera at his uncles, tall and serious, bou-tonnieres in their dark lapels, who walk too close and enter into blurdom. Breavman stops the film to study her and her face is eaten by a spreading orange-rimmed stain as the film melts. A gardener is led shy and grateful into the sunlight to be pre-served with his betters. A battalion of wives is squeezed abreast, is decimated by the edge of the screen. His mother is one of the first to go. Suddenly the picture is shoes and blurred grass as his father staggers under another attack. "Help!" Coils of celluloid are burning around his feet. He dances until he is saved by Nursie and the maid and punished by his mother. The movie runs night and day. Be careful, blood, be careful.”

“Then she suddenly began to wonder if she had turned off her oven before she had gone out in the yard to pick figs; or if she had fed her cat, Sonny, his breakfast yet. She also wondered what that boy in the ugly green shower cap and those other people leaning over, busy poking at her, were saying. She could see their lips moving all right, but she had not put her hearing aid on this morning, and all she could hear was a faint beeping noise, so she decided to try to take a little nap and wait for her niece Norma to come get her. She needed to get back home to check on Sonny and her stove, but she was not particularly looking forward to seeing her niece, because she knew she was going to get fussed at, but good. Norma was a highly nervous sort of a person and, after Elner’s last fall, had told her time and time again, not to get up on that ladder and pick figs. Norma had made her promise to wait and let Macky, Norma’s husband, come over and do it for her; and now not only had Elner broken a promise, this trip to the emergency room was sure to cost her a pretty penny. A few years ago, when her neighbor Tot Whooten had gotten that needle-nosed hound fish stuck in her leg and wound up in the emergency room, Tot said they had charged her a small fortune. On reflection, Elner now realized that she probably should have called Norma; she had thought about calling, but she hadn’t wanted to bother poor Macky for just a few figs. Besides, how could she know there was a wasps’ nest up in her tree? If it weren’t for them, she would have been up and down that ladder with her figs, making fig preserves by now, and Norma would have been none the wiser. It was the wasps’ fault; they had no business being up there in the first place. But at this point she knew that all the excuses in the world would not hold much water with Norma. “I’m in big trouble now,” she thought, before she drifted off. “I may have just lost ladder privileges for life.”
“Modern religion bases its knowledge of God and its account of God entirely upon experience. It has encountered God. It does not argue about God; it relates. It relates without any of those wrappings of awe and reverence that fold so necessarily about imposture, it relates as one tells of a friend and his assistance, of a happy adventure, of a beautiful thing found and picked up by the wayside. So far as its psychological phases go the new account of personal salvation tallies very closely with the account of "conversion" as it is given by other religions. It has little to tell that is not already familiar to the reader of William James's "Varieties of Religious Experience." It describes an initial state of distress with the aimlessness and cruelties of life, and particularly with the futility of the individual life, a state of helpless self- disgust, of inability to form any satisfactory plan of living. This is the common prelude known to many sorts of Christian as "conviction of sin"; it is, at any rate, a conviction of hopeless confusion. . . . Then in some way the idea of God comes into the distressed mind, at first simply as an idea, without substance or belief. It is read about or it is remembered; it is expounded by some teacher or some happy convert. In the case of all those of the new faith with whose personal experience I have any intimacy, the idea of God has remained for some time simply as an idea floating about in a mind still dissatisfied. God is not believed in, but it is realised that if there were such a being he would supply the needed consolation and direction, his continuing purpose would knit together the scattered effort of life, his immortality would take the sting from death. Under this realisation the idea is pursued and elaborated. For a time there is a curious resistance to the suggestion that God is truly a person; he is spoken of preferably by such phrases as the Purpose in Things, as the Racial Consciousness, as the Collective Mind. I believe that this resistance in so many contemporary minds to the idea of God as a person is due very largely to the enormous prejudice against divine personality created by the absurdities of the Christian teaching and the habitual monopoly of the Christian idea. The picture of Christ as the Good Shepherd thrusts itself before minds unaccustomed to the idea that they are lambs.”

“New Zealand is a country that is blessed with a great deal of space. This makes it a big drawcard for overseas visitors, a fact not lost on the tourism industry, who commission epic landscape photographs, usually barren and sparse, depicting vast mountain ranges, the purest lakes and fjords, untouched rolling countryside, and large majestic pools of bubbling mud. You could be forgiven for thinking that no people actually live there. As a New Zealander, I have managed to see a great deal of my country. Much of this has been through the window of my mate’s brown Cortina. In its day, Steve’s Cortina transported the pair of us on a series of epic trips around the South and North Islands. Steve always drove (apart from one late-night incident in Cromwell when I mounted the footpath), and he always insisted the Cortina was in fact copper, not brown. At every new town we visited, a felt pennant of that province was added to the car aerial, and these flags rippled in the southern-hemisphere winds, most being reduced to tufty dags by the end of each given trip. To occupy ourselves while travelling through the undeniably magnificent landscape, we would sometimes play car cricket, scoring runs based on the plenitude of oncoming traffic. An approaching car, for instance, would be one run, a motorbike two, and a truck four, but a passing campervan meant the ‘batsman’ was out. Occasionally, driving in particularly sparse countryside, such as on the west coast of the South Island, we would wait bloody ages to score a single run. Some years later, I found myself living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and on the occasion when I attempted to play car cricket, I scored about a million runs purely in motorbike traffic before I had to pull over, cross-eyed. One of my theories of why there’s so much space in New Zealand is grounded in the fact that so many of my compatriots are out of the country on any given day. After Germany, New Zealand has the most nationals, per head of population, living or travelling abroad at any one time. A fair counter to my argument, however, may be that most of the space they leave behind is filled, in turn, with German tourists. Despite having loads of space at home, New Zealanders love to spend time in places where there isn’t much space at all. Like aeroplanes. With backpacks crammed full of undies, T-shirts and woollen socks, they blast off, funded by student loans, attempting to bridge the vast gap between their country and the rest of the world.”

De Nederlandse schrijfster Nelleke Noordervlietheeft de Constantijn Huygens-prijs 2018 gewonnen. Zij krijgt de prijs voor haar hele oeuvre, maakte de Jan Campert-Stichting donderdag bekend namens de gemeente Den Haag. Aan de prijs is een bedrag van 12.000 euro verbonden. Eerdere winnaars zijn Atte Jongstra (2016), Adriaan van Dis (2015), Mensje van Keulen (2014) en Tom Lanoye (2013). Vorig jaar won de dichter Hans Tentije. “De regen slaat tegen de hoge ramen van het ziekenhuis. Mijn overgrootmoeder ligt in een van de twaalf bedden op zaal. Het is zondag 1 oktober 1876. Haar kind is vijf dagen oud. Zijzelf is op 16 september twintig geworden. Liep ze maar buiten, maar het kan niet. Ze is net zo ingebakerd als haar zoon, die in een soort stofdoekenmand naast haar ligt. Het sluitlaken en het kraamverband dwingen haar uitgedijde en wegvloeiende onderlijf in oude vorm terug. Haar borsten zijn gezwollen en beginnen te lekken zodra het kind huilt. Nooit heeft ze geweten dat het zo zou zijn. Niemand heeft haar verteld hoe haar lichaam zou voelen. Het is niet van haar. Ze kan er geen woorden voor vinden. Zo hol en leeg haar buik is, zo hol en leeg is haar verbazing om wat is. Ze is omgeven door vreemden. Zelfs het kind is een vreemde. De vroedmeester hield hem aan zijn enkels omhoog tot hij schreeuwde. Hij leek op een gevild konijn. Rood en blauw. Ze zag hem even later terug, ingerold in wit linnen dat ze zelf had gemerkt. Op voedertijden reiken ze haar die vreemde schreeuwende larf aan. Vrat hij haar eerst vanbinnen op, nu valt hij vanbuiten aan. Dit is moederschap. De bestemming van de vrouw. En toen was er het kind. Ze weet niet of ze van hem kan houden. Ze weet niet of ze van hem moet houden. Het is stil op de ziekenzaal. Ze zijn bijna allemaal naar de kerkdienst. Niet omdat ze zo vroom zijn maar voor de afleiding. Stuk voor stuk zijn het armlastige moeders die hier komen om te bevallen, zwerfsters, prostituees. Een enkeling is zoals zij, vermoedt ze. Zeker weet ze het niet. Ze vertelt zelf ook niet hoe ze hier is gekomen. Bijna allemaal zijn ze ambulant, op het punt weer de straat op gestuurd te worden, terug naar de gribus waar ze vandaan kwamen. Een van de vrouwen, gisteren binnengebracht, slaapt, het haar in natte slierten over het voorhoofd, de mond open. Een ander ligt koortsig en met holle ogen op de dood te wachten. Haar kind is al door hem gehaald. Niemand krijgt bezoek. Niemand kijkt naar hen om. Ze is te kwaad om te huilen. De oude bediende van het ziekenhuis, Wijnand Brouwer, heeft haar kind aangegeven op het gemeentehuis. Bijna dagelijks geeft hij bastaards aan. ‘Hoe moet-ie heten?’ vroeg hij, terwijl ze nog daas van de bevalling op bed lag. Ze had het geluk van een bed alleen. Anderen lagen met zijn tweeën in één bed.”
