Herderslied

Ziehier, een liefelijke vertelling

Omtrent een herder en een fluit

Wij zien de herder op een helling
Daar laat hij al zijn schaapjes uit
Ze grazen nu eens naar beneden
En dan weer grazen zij omhoog

Maar overal zijn zij tevreden

Dit was deel 1 van mijn betoog

'Het wordt eentonig’ zegt de herder

‘Ik denk dat ik eens verder trek’

Helaas, daar is een wegversperder
Een huizenhoog metalen hek

De herder zegt: ‘We moeten stoppen’
De schaapjes stoppen allemaal

En blaten droevig met hun koppen

Maar ik ga door met mijn verhaal

En wat doet nu de slimme herder?
Wat hij moet doen bedenkt hij vlug

Hij zegt: ‘We kunnen hier niet verder’

'En daarom gaan we maar terug'

En om de schaapjes op te fleuren

Blaast hij een wijsje op zijn fluit

Dat hoort u binnenkort gebeuren

Want deze fabel is nu uit.

De afsluitdijk (1932)

Scheepvaartbedrijvigeid!

Talloze zeedieren!

Toen kwam de afsluitdijk -

Ging de zaak dicht

Pech voor de zeldzame

Coloratuurgarnaal

Die men te laat, helaas

In had gelicht.

geluk. Lik mijn oor
Kus mijn schouder
Wees plat wees vloers
Bijt mijn hart
heb ik met potlood
in jouw oksels
gefluisterd
Maar je was blind
voor de regen
in mijn zon-
negedicht
Elke zin
is een traan die
het dansen
heeft gemist

Bij hem

Terwijl hij zijn schoenveter
strikte keek ik
uit het raam en
zag hoe de zon al verdween
achter het dak van de buren

nu wij zo lang
vruchteloos hadden
zitten praten over
een later dat ontbreekt
in ons verschiet
Kijk,

het betrekt, zei ik
Hij lachte, niet
vrolijk, niet triest
en we gingen tóch naar
buiten omdat het binnen
donker was

Uit: Stephen Fry in America

„I have often felt a hot flare of shame inside me when I listen to my fellow Britons casually jeering at the perceived depth of American ignorance, American crassness, American isolationism, American materialism, American lack of irony and American vulgarity. Aside from the sheer rudeness of such open and unapologetic mockery, it seems to me to reveal very little about America and a great deal about the rather feeble need of some Britons to feel superior. All right, they seem to be saying, we no longer have an Empire, power, prestige or respect in the world, but we do have ‘taste’ and ’subtlety’ and ‘broad general knowledge’, unlike those poor Yanks.

What silly, self-deluding rubbish! What dreadfully small-minded stupidity! Such Britons hug themselves with the thought that they are more cosmopolitan and sophisticated than Americans because they think they know more about geography and world culture, as if firstly being cosmopolitan and sophisticated can be scored in a quiz and as if secondly (and much more importantly) being cosmopolitan and sophisticated is in any way desirable or admirable to begin with. Sophistication is not a moral quality, nor is it a criterion by which one would choose one’s friends. Why do we like people? Because they are knowledgeable, cosmopolitan and sophisticated? No, because they are charming, kind, considerate, exciting to be with, amusing … there is a long list, but knowing what the capital of Kazakhstan is will not be on it.“

Uit: The Book of Sand and Shakespeare's Memory (Vertaald door Andrew Hurley)

The Disk

I am a woodcutter. My name doesn't matter. The hut I was born in, and where I'm soon to die, sits at the edge of the woods. They say these woods go on and on, right to the ocean that surrounds the entire world; they say that wooden houses like mine travel on that ocean. I wouldn't know; I've never seen it. I've not seen the other side of the woods, either. My older brother, when we were boys he made me swear that between the two of us we'd hack away at this woods till there wasn't a tree left standing. My brother is dead now, and now it's something else I'm after, and always will be. Over in the direction where the sun goes down there's a creek I fish in with my hands. There are wolves in the woods, but the wolves don't scare me, and my ax has never failed me. I've not kept track of how old I am, but I know I'm old—my eyes don't see anymore. Down in the village, which I don't venture into anymore because I'd lose my way, everyone says I'm a miser, but how much could a woodcutter have saved up?

I keep the door of my house shut with a rock so the snow won't get in. One evening I heard heavy, dragging footsteps and then a knock. I opened the door and a stranger came in. He was a tall, elderly man all wrapped up in a worn-out old blanket. A scar sliced across his face. The years looked to have given him more authority than frailty, but even so I saw it was hard for him to walk without leaning on his stick. We exchanged a few words I don't recall now. The finally the man said:

“I am without a home, and I sleep wherever I can. I have wandered all across Saxony.”

His words befitted his age. My father always talked about “Saxony”; now people call it England.

There was bread and some fish in the house. While we ate, we didn't talk. It started raining. I took some skins and made him a pallet on the dirt floor where my brother had died. When night came we slept.

„The thrush has his anvil or altar on one fallen stone in a heap, gold and grey, roughly squared and shaped, hot in the sun and mossy in the shade. The massive rubble is in a clearing on a high hill. Below is the canopy of the forest. There is a spring, of course, and a little river flowing from it.
The thrush appears to be listening to the earth. In fact he is looking, with his sideways stare, for his secret prey in the grass, in the fallen leaves. He stabs, he pierces, he carries the shell with its soft centre to his stone. He lifts the shell, he cracks it down. He repeats. He repeats. He extracts the bruised flesh, he sips, he juggles, he swallows. His throat ripples. He sings. His song is liquid syllables, short cries, serial trills. His feathers gleam, creamy and brown-spotted. He repeats. He repeats.
Characters are carved on the stones. Maybe runes, maybe cuneiform, maybe ideograms of a bird's eye or a creature walking, or pricking spears and hatchets. Here are broken alphabets, a and ?, C and T, A and G. Round the stones are the broken shells, helical whorls like empty ears in which no hammer beats on no anvil. They nestle. Their sound is brittle. Their lips are pure white (Helix hortensis) and shining black (Helix nemoralis). They are striped and coiled, gold, rose, chalk, umber; they rattle together as the quick bird steps among them. In the stones are the coiled remains of their congeners, millions of years old.
The thrush sings his limited lovely notes. He stands on the stone, which we call his anvil or altar, and repeats his song. Why does his song give us such pleasure?“

Uit: De scheepsjongens van Bontekoe

„Baas Wouter meesmuilde.

- Over twee jaar!

„Passing off, thought William. Spanish sparkling wine—filthy stuff, he thought, filthy—passed itself off as champagne. Japanese whisky—Glen Yakomoto!—was served as Scotch. Inferior hard cheese—from Mafia-run factories in Catania—was sold to the unsuspecting as Parmesan.
Lots of things were passed off in one way or another, and now, as he stood before the bathroom mirror, he wondered if he could be passed off too. He looked at himself, or such part of himself as the small mirror encompassed-just his face, really, and a bit of neck. It was a fifty-one-year-old face chronologically, but would it pass, he wondered, for a forty-something-year-old face?
He looked more closely: there were lines around the eyes and at the edge of the mouth but the cheeks were smooth enough. He pulled at the skin around the eyes and the lines disappeared. There were doctors who could do that for you, of course: tighten things up; nip and tuck. But the results, he thought, were usually risible. He had a customer who had gone off to some clinic and come back with a face like a Noh-play mask-all smoothed out and flat. It was sad, really. And as for male wigs, with their stark, obvious hairlines, all one wanted to do was to reach forward and give them a tug. It was quite hard to resist, actually, and once, as a student-and when drunk-he had done just that. He had tugged at the wig of a man in a bar and . . . the man had cried. He still felt ashamed of himself for that. Best not to think about it.
No, he was weathering well enough and it was far more dignified to let nature take its course, to weather in a National Trust sort of way. He looked again at his face. Not bad. The sort of face, he thought, that would be hard to describe on the Wanted poster, if he were ever to do anything to merit the attention of the police-which he had not, of course. Apart from the usual sort of thing that made a criminal of everybody: "Wanted for illegal parking," he muttered. "William Edward French (51). Average height, very slightly overweight (if you don't mind our saying so), no distinguishing features. Not dangerous, but approach with caution."

Uit: The Alchemist

„The boy's name was Santiago. Dusk was falling as the boy arrived with his herd at an abandoned church. The roof had fallen in long ago, and an enormous sycamore had grown on the spot where the sacristy had once stood.

He decided to spend the night there. He saw to it that all the sheep entered through the ruined gate, and then laid some planks across it to prevent the flock from wandering away during the night. There were no wolves in the region, but once an animal had strayed during the night, and the boy had had to spend the entire next day searching for it.

He swept the floor with his jacket and lay down, using the book he had just finished reading as a pillow. He told himself that he would have to start reading thicker books: they lasted longer, and made more comfortable pillows.

It was still dark when he awoke, and, looking up, he could see the stars through the half-destroyed roof.

I wanted to sleep a little longer, he thought. He had the same dream that night as a week ago, and once again he had awakened before it ended.

He arose and, taking up his crook, began to awaken the sheep that still slept. He had noticed that, as soon as he awoke, most of his animals also began to stir. It was as if some mysterious energy bound his life to that of the sheep, with whom he had spent the past two years, leading them through the countryside in search of food and water. "They are so used to me that they know my schedule," he muttered. Thinking about that for a moment, he realized that it could be the other way around: that it was he who had become accustomed to "their" schedule.“

Uit: Busched and Ambushed in “The Third Story” (Bespreking in The Village Voice door Michael Feingold)

„This is rich food; not surprisingly, palates accustomed to the thin gruel that today's theater too often serves up have grimaced at it. It's also, let's face the fact, hearty peasant cuisine—a thick stew, the chewy ingredients and peppery flavor of which may not appeal to fastidious tastes. Nor is it dished up with much elegance: The designs have been conceived serviceably but without panache; Carl Andress's direction comes in, competently, just under the imaginative flair that gives such works sparkle.

The cast's likability partly makes up for these shortfalls: Jennifer Van Dyck embodies the monomaniac scientist with crisp comic authority; Turner's brassy energy is as delightful as her slurry diction is maddening (startlingly, it improves when she takes on the German accent). Walker is irresistibly charming as he lurches, like a bipedal shuttlecock, from lapsed screenwriter to Oedipally traumatized gangster; Sarah Rafferty makes his ambiguously wide-eyed doll and the woebegone Russian princess equally fetching. Busch's definitive gift for female haughtiness, whether sporting gangster haute couture or a massive gray fright wig larger than himself, needs no critic's confirmation.

The main joy of The Third Story is that its foolery embodies something substantive, making its occasional unevenness easy to bear. Like that good peasant food, it sticks to your ribs. Jung says somewhere that the psychic "work" accomplished by myths and fairy tales doesn't occur on the story's realistic, psychological, or allegorical level; it's in the energy created as our minds move among the three. No wonder The Third Story feels like such an energizing event.“

Uit: Juli Zeh. Angriff auf die Freiheit

Wenn wir Angst haben, raschelt es überall.

Sophokles

Customs and Border Protection, seit Ihrem letzten Sommerurlaub in Florida.

Uit: The Wrong Boy

„I thought about it. And then I said, 'Because of Morrissey.'

'Morris who?' he said.

'Morrissey,' I told him, 'not Morris who. Morrissey, the greatest living lyricist. He used to be with The Smiths.'

'Oh,' he said, 'that boring twat!'

I didn't talk to him any more. He put a Phil Collins cassette on and farted a few times which, in the musical circumstances, I thought was rather apposite.

He's just stuffed another bacon buttie between his teeth and he's laughing again so that you can see all the chewed-up bread and bacon and saliva in his mouth. He thinks it's dead hilarious 'cause I said I was a vegetarian. That's what started him laughing.

'I don't know what you're laughing for,' I said, 'because all sorts of people are vegetarian; like George Bernard Shaw was vegetarian. And Mahatma Gandhi! And the majority of the world happens to be vegetarian,' I said, 'including Morrissey. And me.'

He just laughed even more.

'And that's why I became a vegetarian,' I told him. 'Because of Morrissey.'

But I was wasting my breath so I shut up and let him laugh. What can you say to a Philistine who's into Phil Collins and Dire Straits and other such frivolity? I've got my Walkman on now so at least I can't hear him laughing. The only saving grace in having a lift from him is that he's so fat he makes me feel really thin. It's not that I'm obese or anything, not any more, Morrissey. But even though I'm not fat nowadays, I sometimes forget and still think of myself as being corpulent. And I hate having to look at pictures of me when I was fat. Photographs are just like computers - they never tell the truth. It's like that picture of Oscar Wilde, Morrissey, you know the one where he's got those boots on and he's leaning against that wall. And if that was the only surviving picture of Oscar Wilde everybody'd think he was a fat person, wouldn't they? But Oscar Wilde wasn't fat, not on the inside. And I wasn't fat, not on the inside, I wasn't. It was just a phase I was going through. And probably it was just a phase that Oscar Wilde was going through and he couldn't help it just like I couldn't help it. They used to call me Moby Dick! When we moved to Wythenshawe and they put me in that comprehensive school where I didn't know nobody and it was already the middle of term by the time I started, I walked into the classroom and Steven Spanswick looked up and said, 'Fuckin' hell, it's Moby Dick!'

So weit, so gut.

Anterotics

Laughs the happy April morn

Thro' my grimy, little window,

And a shaft of sunshine pushes

Thro' the shadows in the square.

Dogs are tracing thro' the grass,

Crows are cawing round the chimneys,

In and out among the washing

Goes the West at hide-and-seek.

Loud and cheerful clangs the bell.

Here the nurses troop to breakfast.

Handsome, ugly, all are women . . .

O, the Spring--the Spring--the Spring!

Fill A Glass With Golden Wine

Fill a glass with golden wine,

And the while your lips are wet

Set your perfume unto mine,

And forget.

Every kiss we take and give

Leaves us less of life to live.

Yet again! Your whim and mine

In a happy while have met.

All your sweets to me resign,

Nor regret

That we press with every breath,

Sighed or singing, nearer death.

Waiting

A square, squat room (a cellar on promotion),

Drab to the soul, drab to the very daylight;

Plasters astray in unnatural-looking tinware;

Scissors and lint and apothecary's jars.

Here, on a bench a skeleton would writhe from,

Angry and sore, I wait to be admitted:

Wait till my heart is lead upon my stomach,

While at their ease two dressers do their chores.

One has a probe-it feels to me a crowbar.

A small boy sniffs and shudders after bluestone.

A poor old tramp explains his poor old ulcers.

Life is (I think) a blunder and a shame.

Zilpha Marsh

At four o'clock in late October

I sat alone in the country school-house

Back from the road 'mid stricken fields,

And an eddy of wind blew leaves on the pane,

And crooned in the flue of the cannon-stove,

With its open door blurring the shadows

With the spectral glow of a dying fire.

In an idle mood I was running the planchette --

All at once my wrist grew limp,

And my hand moved rapidly over the board,

Till the name of "Charles Guiteau" was spelled,

Who threatened to materialize before me.

I rose and fled from the room bare-headed

Into the dusk, afraid of my gift.

And after that the spirits swarmed --

Chaucer, Caesar, Poe and Marlowe,

Cleopatra and Mrs. Surratt --

Wherever I went, with messages, --

Mere trifling twaddle, Spoon River agreed.

You talk nonsense to children, don't you?

And suppose I see what you never saw

And never heard of and have no word for,

I must talk nonsense when you ask me

What it is I see!

Wir wundern uns dass die Poeten gschriben
So künstlich Vers und Meisterstück getrieben
Dass doch nit ist solch wunder
Weil sie gschrieben b'sunder
Ihr Sprach jetzunder.

Den sein Ouidius und Maro Gierte
Nit gwesen Reimer also hoch geehrte

Uit: Interview with Andrei Pleşu (Door Alexandre Mirlesse in Notre Europe)

„Can we speak of a “European identity”?

I think on the contrary that it is time to pause, to stop speaking about it in the hyperbole currently in favour. Much has been said about Europe already, much has been written; the original nucleus has been enlarged.

Now, whatever happens, there will be a break before the next enlargement, if it takes place. Under these circumstances an exercise in silence might help. Besides, what has been said was not terribly imaginative. Some words appear too often!

So you think, like Hungarian writer Peter Esterhazy, that people should be fined for using expressions like “return to Europe”, “common house”, “European values”?

Oh! I have heard better: “A soul for europe”! It was the theme of a conference recently organised by some Germans. They like that sort of schmaltz … But, to be quite candid, it isn’t just a few similar words but also the same themes that keep popping up…

Which ones?

Before we go any further let one thing be clear: these themes are per se utterly honourable. What actually shocks me is the way they are treated. Firstly, of course, we find the famous ‘values’. Ah! Values! Culture! Heritage! They never fail to adorn the end of speeches, but you can’t help feeling that they are not the heart of the matter – rather some kind of flourish, so to speak, the rococo of political discourse. I was recently disturbed by something Angela Merkel said on this subject: “Europe is not a Christian club, Europe is a club of values”. As though there were some primary contradiction between Christianity and values! If she had said: “Europe is not a Christian club, Europe is a ecumenical club” or “Europe is not a club of madmen, Europe is a club of values” – that would have been logical. But, as it stands, her sentence suggests a serious lack of understanding of values, Christianity and Europe.“
