To The Whore Who Took My Poems

some say we should keep personal remorse from the
poem,
stay abstract, and there is some reason in this,
but jezus;
twelve poems gone and I don't keep carbons and you have
my
paintings too, my best ones; its stifling:
are you trying to crush me out like the rest of them?
why didn't you take my money? they usually do
from the sleeping drunken pants sick in the corner.
next time take my left arm or a fifty
but not my poems:
I'm not Shakespeare
but sometime simply
there won't be any more, abstract or otherwise;
there'll always be mony and whores and drunkards
down to the last bomb,
but as God said,
crossing his legs,
I see where I have made plenty of poets
but not so very much
poetry.

Yes Yes

when God created love he didn't help most
when God created dogs He didn't help dogs
when God created plants that was average
when God created hate we had a standard utility
when God created me He created me
when God created the monkey He was asleep
when He created the giraffe He was drunk
when He created narcotics He was high
and when He created suicide He was low

when He created you lying in bed
He knew what He was doing
He was drunk and He was high
and He created the mountians and the sea and fire at the same time

He made some mistakes
but when He created you lying in bed
He came all over His Blessed Universe.

Rain Or Shine

the vultures at the zoo
(all three of the)
sit very quietly in their
caged tree
and below
on the ground
are chunks of rotten meat.
the vultures are over-full.
our taxes have fed them
well.

we move on to the next
cage.
a man is in there
sitting on the ground
eating
his own shit.
i recognize him as
our former mailman.
his favorite expression
had been:
"have a beautiful day."

that day i did.

raum in uns

Die liebe
ist eine wilde rose in uns,
unerforschbar vom verstand

O! Snaren van m’n jonge ziel
Ik voelde uw trillen zacht,
Wijl ’t woordje op u nederviel,
Dat door m’n tranen lacht.

O! Zacht en zangerige woord,
Waarin ik peerlen vind,
Hebt gij m’n vreugde niet gehoord
Toen ‘k worden mocht uw kind?

O Gij, die m’n gedachtjes kust
En wiegt m’n droefenis,
’t Is of m’n innerlijke rust
Door u beveiligd is.

O lieflijkheid! o zang getril!
Verwarm het harte mijn,
Dat arm verlaten hart, en wil,
M’n eeuw’ge rijkdom zijn.

Regendag

Grijs gewelf met grauwe vegen,
Koepel van ons huis,
Waarom stort ge uwe tranen tegen
't Venster van m'n kluis?

Ziet ge niet in bei m'n ogen
Tranen die ik schrei?
Waarom zonder mededogen
Stort ge er de uwe bij?

Tranen lekken langs m'n wangen
Om m'n eigen wee...
Zingen dan uw weemoedzangen,
Droppels, met me mee?

Tranen lekken langs de ramen
Van m'n kamerkijn...
Dropplen droef, we schreien samen

Ô mon beau chat frileux, quand l'automne morose

“This creed of the desert seemed inexpressible in words, and indeed in thought. It was easily felt as an influence, and those who went into the desert long enough to forget its open spaces and its emptiness were inevitably thrust upon God as the only refuge and rhythm of being. The Bedawi might be a nominal Sunni, or a nominal Wahabi, or anything else in the Semitic compass, and he would take it very lightly, a little in the manner of the watchmen at Zion's gate who drank beer and laughed in Zion because they were Zionists. Each individual nomad had his revealed religion, not oral or traditional or expressed, but instinctive in himself; and so we got all the Semitic creeds with (in character and essence) a stress on the emptiness of the world and the fullness of God; and according to the power and opportunity of the believer was the expression of them.

(…)

Men have looked upon the desert as barren land, the free holding of whoever chose; but in fact each hill and valley in it had a man who was its acknowledged owner and would quickly assert the right of his family or clan to it, against aggression. Even the wells and trees had their masters, who allowed men to make firewood of the one and drink of the other freely, as much as was required for their need, but who would instantly check anyone trying to turn the property to account and to exploit it or its products among others for private benefit. The desert was held in a crazed communism by which Nature and the elements were for the free use of every known friendly person for his own purposes and no more. Logical outcomes were the reduction of this licence to privilege by the men of the desert, and their hardness to strangers unprovided with introduction or guarantee, since the common security lay in the common responsibility of kinsmen.”
