Whitsunday in Kirchstetten (W. A. Auden)

Prettige Pinksterdagen!

Pinksterfeest door Juan de Flandes (ca. 1465-1519)

Whitsunday in Kirchstetten
(for H.A. Reinhold)

Grace dances. I would pipe. Dance ye all.
[Acts of John]

Komm Schöpfer Geist I bellow as Herr Beer
picks up our slim offerings and Pfarrer Lustkandl
quietly gets on with the Sacrifice
as Rome does it: outside car-worshippers enact
the ritual exodus from Vienna
their successful cult demands (though reckoning time
by the Jewish week and the Christian year
like their pedestrian fathers).

When Mass is over,
although obedient to Canterbury,
I shall be well grüss-gotted, asked to contribute
to Caritas though a metic come home
to lunch on my own land: no doubt, if the Allies had not
conquered the Ost-Mark, if the dollar fell,
the Gemütlichkeit would be less, but when was peace
or its concomitant smile the worse
for being undeserved?

In the onion-tower overhead
bells clash at the Elevation, calling
on Austria to change: whether the world has improved
is doubtful, but we believe it could
and the divine Tiberius didn’t.  Rejoice, the bells
cry to me.  Blake’s Old Nobodaddy
in his astronomic telescopic heaven,
Army, Navy, Law, Church, nor a Prince
say who is papabile. (The Ape of the Living God
knows how to stage a funeral though,
as penitents like it: Babel, like Sodom, still
has plenty to offer, though of course it draws
a better sort of crowd.)  Rejoice we who were born
congenitally deaf are able
to listen now to rank outsiders.

The Holy Ghost
does not abhor a golfer’s jargon,
a Lower-Austrian accent, the cadences even
of my own little Anglo-American
musico-literary set (though difficult,
saints at least may think in algebra
without sin): but no sacred nonsense can stand Him.
Our magic syllables melt away,
our tribal formulae are laid bare: since this morning,
it is with a vocabulary
made wholesomely profane, open in lexicons
to our foes to translate, that we endeavor
each in his idiom to express the true magnalia
which need no hallowing from us, loaning terms,
exchanging graves and legends. (Maybe, when just now
Kirchstetten prayed for the dead, only I
remembered Franz Joseph the Unfortunate, who danced
once in eighty-six years and never
used the telephone.)

An altar bell makes a noise
as the Body of the Second Adam
is shown to some of his torturers, forcing them
to visualize absent enemies,
with the same right to grow hybrid corn and be wicked
as an Abendlander. As crows fly,
ninety kilometers from here our habits end,
where minefield and watchtower say NO EXIT
from peace-loving Crimtartary, except for crows
and agents of peace: from Loipersbach
to the Bering Sea not a living stockbroker,
and church attendance is frowned upon
like visiting brothels (but the chess and physics
are still the same).  We shall bury you
and dance at the wake, say her chiefs: that says Reason
is unlikely. But to most people
I’m the wrong color: it could be the looter’s turn
for latrine duty and the flogging block,
my kin who trousered Africa, carried our smell
to germless poles.

Down a Gothic nave
comes our Pfarrer now, blessing the West with water:
we may go.  There is no Queen’s English
in any context for Geist or Esprit: about
catastrophe or how to behave in one
what do I know, except what everyone knows—
if there when Grace dances, I should dance.

Noach's duif

Verheugd omdat zo schoon heelal mij kooide.

Zichzelf verteren daar haar niemand voedt.

Brand niet zoo luid, mijn ziel! waaróm zoo luid?
Gij weet toch, dat ge alleen en stil moet zijn;
En veel begrijpen, daar me’ ú nièt verstaat;

Johanna. Du hast es ja so sehr gewünscht . . .

wanneer zij haar gespierde
handen om de tepels legt.

Bij melken heeft zij als kind
geleerd telt de relatie met
het dier dat geeft meer geeft
wanneer je het met eerbied
en genegenheid benadert.

Zo zat zij dagelijks
op haar kruk half onder een
koeienlijf kende elke ronding
van de volle borst en denkt soms
nog aan hoe in het begin voor
het vrij melken
de koe uitsluitend melk gaf
wanneer men haar
haar kalf liet zien.

was hört was kommt vom draußen ich.
das muß ein wagen träger sein
dem niemand fehlt den kommt allein
von selber aus dem kuckuck zum.

was ich nicht bin das frißt die not
also denke beißt die runde.

"So also siehst du mich!", sagte Julika.

Keinerlei Umschweife. Nichts, was hinauszuzögern gewesen wäre.
Stella. Ich heiße Stella.”

„[The light gets warmer
He sits. NURSE enters the square.)
NURSE: Mrs Salomon to see you, Doctor.
DYSART: Show her in, please.
[NURSE leaves and crosses to where HESTHER sits] Some days I blame Hesther. She brought him to me. But of course that’s nonsense. What is he but a last straw? a last symbol? If it hadn’t been him, it would have been the next patient, or the next. At least, I suppose so.
[HESTHER enters the square: a woman in her mid-flames]
HESTHER: Hallo, Martin.
[DYSART rises and kisses her on the cheek]
DYSART: Madam Chairman! Welcome to the torture chamber!
HESTHER: It’s good of you to see me right away.
DYSART: You’re a welcome relief. Take a couch.
HESTHER: It’s been a day?
DYSART: No-j ust a fifteen-year-old schizophrenic, and a girl of eight thrashed into catatonia by her father. Normal, really . . .You’re in a state.
HESTHER: Martin, this is the most shocking case I ever tried.
DYSART: So you said on the phone.
HESTHER: I mean it. My bench wanted to send the boy to prison. For life, if they could manage it. It took me two hours solid arguing to get him sent to you instead.”

Radio Talk [a true poem]

An interviewer
on a radio talk show
asks an artist
to tell him if
the numbers of hours
he spends painting
in a year corresponds
to the amount of money
he makes in that year

The artist mumbles
something about how
art and money
are not compatible
and leaves it at that

I wanted to butt in
and tell that asshole
interviewer that
he was confusing
A job with Work

A job is where one
goes to make money
Work (especially
Work well done) is
what gives pleasure
and nothing else

A job is boring
A job is tedious
A job is embarrasing
A job is exploitative
A job is humiliating
A job is idiotic
A job is a waste of time

But Work well done
always gives pleasure
and satisfaction

A job is what you do
five days a week
for a determined
amount of time
usually prescribed
by your boss
and your needs
A job is limiting

Work takes place
all the time
even when you sleep
Work is indefinite

Uit: The Undertaker's Gone Bananas

“Some of the cars did start to swerve and Lauri thought it might be a little bit dangerous but in the end she really did think the police made much too much fuss about the whole event. After all, there was no law against walking across a bridge with ape masks on.
“There’s no such specific law on the books,” Bobby had said. And the cops just sort of scratched their heads and drdove them off the bridge.
“You two just like to get everybody’s goat, don’t you?” Patrolman Petrie had observed.
Of course the worst thing Bobby and Lauri ever did they never really got caught at and that was throwing balloons filled with water off Bobby’s terrace. They did that almost all of April and it was a lot of fun watching the big rubber balls tumble twenty-four floors and then splash near Rucci sitting at the garage cage. One exploded right in front, splashing the glass in front of him. One time they threw a water balloon too far to the right and ti landed right in the middle of some people who were on their way home from a wedding. That was the same evening Bobby and Lauri had their very profound discussion about how Lauri thought that Bobby was really a reincarnation of Jack in “Jack and the Beanstalk”. And Bobby had decided after a lot of thought that he thought Lauri was the Sleeping Beauty. They both had no trouble finding out this information because all they had to do was ask each other what their favorite childhood story was. Bobby always thought of himself as Jack, the devilish kid who would trade the family cow any day for a pack of magical beans and when the vine grew he knew he’d be the first to climb it, especially knowing there was a giant waiting to do battle when he reached the top. The only thing was that Bobby didn’t plan on beiong knocked off; he figured he would knock off the giant.”

Uit: The Master and Margarita (Vertaald door Michael Glenny)

„Berlioz's life was so arranged that he was not accustomed to seeing unusual phenomena.  Paling even more, he stared and thought in consternation: "It can't be!"
But alas it was, and the tall, transparent gentleman was swaying from left to right in front of him without touching the ground.
Berlioz was so overcome with horror that he shut his eyes.  When he opened them he saw that it was all over, the mirage had dissolved, the chequered figure had vanished and the blunt needle had simultaneously removed itself from his heart.
"The devil!"  exclaimed the editor.  "Do you know, Ivan, the heat nearly gave me a stroke just then!  I even saw something like a hallucination..."  He tried to smile but his eyes were still blinking with fear and his hands trembled.  However he gradually calmed down, flapped his handkerchief and with a brave enough "Well, now..."  carried on the conversation that had been interrupted by their drink of apricot juice.
They had been talking, it seemed, about Jesus Christ.  The fact was that the editor had commissioned the poet to write a long anti-religious poem for one of the regular issues of his magazine.  Ivan Nikolayich had written this poem in record time, but unfortunately the editor did not care for it at all.  Bezdomny had drawn the chief figure in his poem, Jesus, in very black colors, yet in the editor's opinion the whole poem had to be written again.  And now he was reading Bezdomny a lecture on Jesus in order to stress the poet's fundamental error.
It was hard to say exactly what had made Bezdomny write as he had — whether it was his great talent for graphic description or complete ignorance of the subject he was writing on, but his Jesus had come out, well, completely alive, a Jesus who had really existed, although admittedly a Jesus who had every possible fault.”

“Then a strange thing happened.
The house whirled around two or three times and rose slowly through the air. Dorothy felt as if she were going up in a balloon.
The north and south winds met where the house stood, and made it the exact center of the cyclone. In the middle of a cyclone the air is generally still, but the great pressure of the wind on every side of the house raised it up higher and higher, until it was at the very top of the cyclone; and there it remained and was carried miles and miles away as easily as you could carry a feather.
It was very dark, and the wind howled horribly around her, but Dorothy found she was riding quite easily. After the first few whirls around, and one other time when the house tipped badly, she felt as if she were being rocked gently, like a baby in a cradle.
Toto did not like it. He ran about the room, now here, now there, barking loudly; but Dorothy sat quite still on the floor and waited to see what would happen.
Once Toto got too near the open trap door, and fell in; and at first the little girl thought she had lost him. But soon she saw one of his ears sticking up through the hole, for the strong pressure of the air was keeping him up so that he could not fall. She crept to the hole, caught Toto by the ear, and dragged him into the room again, afterward closing the trap door so that no more accidents could happen.”

“There was a white lace tablecloth reaching to the floor all around, over white satin. The wedding cake was tall as the flower girl and of astonishing circumference, festooned all over with white sugar roses and green leaves, actual live rose leaves. The room, she wrote, was a perfect bower of southern smilax and white dogwood. And there was butter. This is a bizarre note, but there was an enormous silver butter dish, with feet [italics mine], containing at least ten pounds of butter. The dish had cupids and some sort of fruit around the rim, and the butter was molded or carved, to resemble a set-piece of roses and lilies, every petal and leaf standing out sharply, natural as life. The flower girl, after the lapse of nearly a century, remembered no more than this, but ,I think it does well for a glimpse. That butter. She couldn’t get over it, and neither can I.
It seems as late-Roman and decadent as anything ever thought up in Hollywood. Her memory came back with a rush when she thought of the food. All the children had their own table in a small parlour, and ate just what the grownups had: Kentucky ham, roast turkey, partridges in wine jelly, fried chicken, dove pie, half a dozen sweet and hot sauces, peach pickle, watermelon pickle and spiced mangoes. A dozen different fruits, four kinds of cake and at last a chilled custard in tall glasses with whipped cream capped by a brandied cherry.
The wedding may well have been a lavish affair for the young couple as well, as the Skaggses had some means. The census of 1850 shows Asbury Porter as having land at the value of $1,000 and the slave census shows him owning one seventeen-year-old female slave and a middle-aged male. The female slave was a wedding gift from Catherine’s brother, Harrison Skaggs, a New Orleans businessman who included among his transactions the buying and selling of slaves.”
