De lucht was als een perzik

De lucht was als een perzik,
de maan een diamant,
zwellende lentenevels
bloeiden aan alle kant.

Over de donzen heuvels
lokte een ver verschiet;
wij wilden zwervend worden,
zwervend en anders niet.

De voeten gingen samen,
de hand lag in de hand,
de harten opgedragen;
aarde, waar is uw band?

In dreven en valleien
geklommen en gedaald
in schaduwen geloken
in open licht bestraald

En onze zielen togen
naar nieuwe zaligheid
in het voorbij voorbije
wankelend ingeleid

Waar lillend lichtaanbreken

in kettingen en snoeren;

en in betreuren ingehuld;

van slaap. De sterren gaan, de waat'ren stromen;

's Nachts hoorden wij in 't holle huis
de ratten rennen langs de binten.
Zij scheurden spaanders van de plinten;
in kasten viel de kalk tot gruis...

De Rotte gistte van bederf. -
Uw fierheid heeft geen kamp gegeven:
ge hebt het vaal gespuis verdreven,
nog: de boerin op eigen erf.

Maar later, 's nachts in het gewelf
der kelders hoorden wij u vloeken;
uw bezem bonkte - in lege hoeken:
De ratten zaten in uzelf.

De afwijzing

Ik schrijf u met de ravenveer,
Mijnheer.
Mijn eer en uw eer
uw hart mijn hart
heeft niets gemeen.
Ik schrijf u met de ravenveer.
Ik schrijf u met het ravenzwart
het teken: neen.

Uit: Vast Emotions and Imperfect Thoughts (Vertaald door Clifford E.Landers)

“That would be a cheap syntactical trick that would weaken the scene even further and deprive the spectator of the tension that Babel had built up. But did that matter? Who among the millions of semi-illiterates produced by the educational institutions, consumers of a comfortable art represented by pop music, by the movies and television, would be familiar with Babel? All they would know of Babel would be my film. In other words, very little.

    It was time to go and see my brother. In the taxi I thought: Afonka puts a shot in Dolguchov's mouth. Fine. What kind of shot? Babel doesn't say. I had Afonka using a revolver. How would the scene play with a rifle?

    It was after eleven when I got to Jose's mansion, one of the last remaining in Ipanema.

    Alone in the living room, he was watching the video I had made. He wasn't wearing the girdle he normally used so the faithful wouldn't see the size of his paunch. `You're late,' he said softly. He hated waiting, but he had learned to control his irritation. He saved it for his preaching, when he inveighed against sin and the devil. `Gislaine has already gone to bed.' Gislaine was the woman he'd married back in the days when he still sold used cars.

    He rewound the tape. `I like the film, you know. The photography is beautiful, and I come out of it well. I liked your idea of putting in that young couple, the woman believing in what I say from the start and the man doubting, and then, when I finish my sermon, the man is convinced and nodding his head in agreement with what I'm saying.'

  `You'll find that in the publicity films of any televangelist,' I said, knowing he didn't like to be called that. But Jose pretended to ignore my observation.

    `Only here, in this short bit at the end, we could add what I spoke to you about.' Jose froze the image. `Here I could make a frank and direct appeal to the members of the congregations, asking them to contribute to the spread of our Church and to the upkeep of its social work. No hypocrisy. As the prophet Malachi said, "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house, and prove me now herewith." A direct kind of message.'

Uit: The Family of Pascual Duarte (Vertaald door Anthony Kerrigan)

“The bell tower was the same height as the clock tower, and in the summertime, when the storks came to nest, some went to one tower and some to the other, each of them remembering which of the two towers it had used the year before. One little lame stork, which managed to last through two winters, belonged to the church nest, from which it had fallen while still very young, when pursued by a hawk.

 My house lay outside the village, a good two hundred paces from the last cluster of houses. It was a cramped one-story house: narrow quarters, befitting my station in life. I came to feel affection for the place, and there were even times when I was proud of it. In actual fact the kitchen was the only room that was really decent; it was the first room as you entered the house, and it was always clean and kept whitewashed. True enough, the floor was earthen, but it was so well trodden down and the small paving stones were set in such nice patterns and designs that it was in no way inferior to many other floors where the owner had laid down cement in order to be modern. The hearth was roomy and clear; a shelf ran around the chimneypiece, which was in the semicircular shape of a funnel, and on the shelf we had ornamental crockery, jugs with mottoes painted in blue, and plates with blue and orange drawings. Some of the plates were decorated with a face, others with a flower, others with a name, and others with a fish. “

Uit: Emma & Knightley

“Emma Knightley, handsome, clever and rich, with a husband whose affection for her was only equalled by her affection for him, had passed upward of a year of marriage in what may be described as perfect happiness; certainly this is how she described it to herself as she sat at her writing desk from which she had an excellent view of her father, Mr Woodhouse, taking a turn round the shrubbery on the arm of her beloved Mr Knightley.
Emma smiled as she watched them, smiled and repressed a sigh as she saw the tender way in which Mr Knightley – she would never bring herself to call him George – put his upright, manly self between the cool autumnal breeze and the frail figure of her father. Since she, herself, usually performed this daily office for her father – Mr Knightley often being occu¬pied in the mornings when her father felt the air most conducive to good health – seldom did she have the opportunity of seeing her parent as he appeared at a distance to the objective eye.
His walking was tentative, it could not be denied, but then he had never been quick, or never since she could remember him. It was possible – Emma considered the idea from the heights of her still new stature as a wife – that his sense of himself as an invalid had stemmed from the early death of Mrs Woodhouse, causing him to distrust health. If that were the cause – and, by his affectionate accounts of his wife, she had possessed all the vivacity, intellectual vigour and good health that any woman could wish for – then it was understandable that her adoring husband's tempera¬ment should receive a severe shock at her unexpected death; that he would never be the same, but always fearful, not just for himself, but for his daughters (Emma had an elder sister, Isabella), their husbands, Isabella's five children (soon to be six), his friends, acquaintances and, in short, the whole world, small as it was, that he inhabited.”

Nichts bleibt

Tage kommen und gehen
alles bleibt wie es ist

Nichts bleibt wie es ist
es zerbricht wie Porzellan

Du bemühst dich
die Scherben zu kleben
zu einem Gefäß
und weinst
weil es nicht glückt

Glück II

Der Traum vom Glück
wehrt sich gegen mich
seit ich ihn träumen will

Ich habe viel geträumt
von dunklen Dingen

Manchmal stand ein Stern
am Himmel meines Traums
nur einen Augenblick
dann stürzte er
und fiel
weiß auf mein Haar

Erdgeboren

Über mir in wolkigen Lüften
Wogen Lerchen traumverloren.
Tiefi m Heidekraute lieg ich,
Fühle mich so erdgeboren;

Ganz, als ob ich aus der Scholle
Wildentwachsen wär, wie Bäume,
Leicht vom Heidewind geschaukelt,
Erde halb - und halb auch Träume.

Ganz, als ob ich aus der Scholle
Aufgeflogen wär mit Schwingen,
Hoch im Sommerwind aufsteigend,
Erde halb - und halb doch Klingen.

Uit: The Gadfly

“He broke off and sat tearing the foxglove bells to pieces. The silence was so long and deep that he looked up, wondering why the Padre did not speak. It was growing dark under the branches of the magnolia, and everything seemed dim and indistinct; but there was light enough to show the ghastly paleness of Montanelli’s face. He was bending his head down, his right hand tightly clenched upon the edge of the bench. Arthur looked away with a sense of awe-struck wonder. It was as though he had stepped unwittingly on to holy ground.

“My God!” he thought; “how small and selfish I am beside him! If my trouble were his own he couldn’t feel it more.”

Presently Montanelli raised his head and looked round. “I won’t press you to go back there; at all events, just now,” he said in his most caressing tone; “but you must promise me to take a thorough rest when your vacation begins this summer. I think you had better get a holiday right away from the neighborhood of Leghorn. I can’t have you breaking down in health.”

“Where shall you go when the seminary closes, Padre?”

“I shall have to take the pupils into the hills, as usual, and see them settled there. But by the middle of August the subdirector will be back from his holiday. I shall try to get up into the Alps for a little change. Will you come with me? I could take you for some long mountain rambles, and you would like to study the Alpine mosses and lichens. But perhaps it would be rather dull for you alone with me?”

“Padre!” Arthur clasped his hands in what Julia called his “demonstrative foreign way.” “I would give anything on earth to go away with you. Only – I am not sure –” He stopped.

“You don’t think Mr. Burton would allow it?”

“He wouldn’t like it, of course, but he could hardly interfere. I am eighteen now and can do what I choose. After all, he’s only my step-brother; I don’t see that I owe him obedience. He was always unkind to mother.”
