Breister

Laden vol warme halzen
breit zij en komt zo mensen
op het spoor die het jaar door
winter trotseren in haar.

Naalden zijn de laatste taal.
Een na een heeft rijm
de levenden het zwijgen opgelegd.
Toch zijn ze er nog allemaal.

Hun alfabet is een perfect geheim,
het wordt omwonden, niet gezegd.
Wie spreekt kan er niet bij.
Hun gesprek tikt, tikt om mij.

Naar binnnen

Ik zou haar willen kennen,
deurtje in haar hoofd en zo
naar binnen. Omzichtig door
de doolhof die zij is.

Daar is een kamer vol met
alles wat zij mist. Feiten,
dagen, mensen door elkaar.
Het heeft gewaaid in haar.

Een man is hier die dood is.
Een kind dat niet bestaat.
Ik snuffel in een leven, kan
met alles niets beginnen.

Het is goed dat het vergaat.

Thuiskomst

misschien.
wij veroorzaken elkaar. Het is toch niet
denkbaar dat iemand dit alles verzint.

Uit: The Evening of the Holiday

„The rough surface was comforting after the urgent efficiency of the highway; among its dents and ridges they slowed to a walking pace. On either side grass grew high against the twisted trunks of the trees. When they had gone about fifty yards along the avenue, Tancredi parked the car at a place where the roadway widened slightly and where another car might pass. But nothing approached them in the driveway or from the road behind. Under the hospitable arch of green, sheltered from the light of these last curious days, they were silent in one another’s arms.

Insects and birds resumed their interrupted life outside the car. A leaf or two fell on the windshield, and they heard the flourish of some small animal in the grass. All around them, across the countryside, men and women went about their work or sat down to their lunch, talked and laughed – or wept, as they wept now. Even in that luminous green she persevered, trying to fit this love into some immense, annihilating context of human experience, assailing it with her sense of proportion.

Tancredi, who knew more about proportion, lifted his head from hers. “What could be worse than this?” he asked. “What could be worse?”

Not long ago he had thought it logical that she should leave him. In the face of this pain, it now seemed meaningless, an action deliberately performed against the only life they could be sure of, their prsent existence, in the name of a future that might never come, and that in any case must contain inapprehensible elements.“

Das Schloß der Väter

Ich träum' als Kind mich zurücke,
Und schüttle mein greises Haupt;
Wie sucht ihr mich heim, ihr Bilder,
Die lang' ich vergessen geglaubt?

Hoch ragt aus schatt'gen Gehegen
Ein schimmerndes Schloß hervor,
Ich kenne die Türme, die Zinnen,
Die steinerne Brücke, das Tor.

Es schauen vom Wappenschilde
Die Löwen so traulich mich an,
Ich grüße die alten Bekannten
Und eile der Burghof hinan.

Dort liegt die Sphinx am Brunnen,
Dort grünt der Feigenbaum,
Dort hinter diesen Fenstern
Verträumt' ich den ersten Traum.

Ich tret' in die Burgkapelle
Und suche des Ahnherrn Grab;
Dort ist's, dort hängt vom Pfeiler
Das alte Gewaffen herab.

Noch lesen umflort die Augen
Die Züge der Inschrift nicht,
Wie hell durch die bunten Scheiben
Das Licht darüber auch bricht.

So stehst du, o Schloß meiner Väter
Mir treu und fest in dem Sinn,
Und bist von der Erde verschwunden,
Der Pflug geht über dich hin.

Sei fruchtbar, o teurer Boden,
Ich segne dich mild und gerührt,
Ich segn' ihn zwiefach, wer immer
Den Pflug nun über dich führt.

Ich aber will auf mich raffen,
Mein Saitenspiel in der Hand,
Die Weiten der Erde durchschweifen
Und singen von Land zu Land.

For Dachshunds with erections can't climb stairs

Each night she's on the balcony
He loves her from afar
His soft, sad eyes are hypnotised
She shines down like a star.
His heart will break forever
His kind can't have affairs
For Dachshunds with erections...
Can't climb stairs.

His home's a humble bungalow
And her's a penthouse flat
He cannot go where she can go
And that, they say. is that.
He never can be near her
Although she knows he cares
For Dachshunds with erections...
Can't climb stairs.

You want to win a woman?
Just be cool... be aloof
The dog who doesn't hit the stairs
Can make it to the roof.
The dog who doesn't care
Will be the dog who wins the day
You'll never get to heaven...
With your chopper in the way.

The spirit soars, the body falls
And heavy lies the heart
That cries out with the pain of love
Be still my broken part.
How painful is the passion
And painful the repairs
For Dachshunds with erections
Can't climb stairs.

Uit: The Broken Cord

„I sat in the lobby of the Pierre airport, waiting. The terminal resembled an oversized department store display case, the kind in which jewelry or cosmetics are arranged--a glass front, neutral colors, brightly lit--except that this one existed in isolation, a rectangular box on the flat, wind-scoured plain of central South Dakota. A draft of air had lifted the wings of the small commuter plane just before we landed, releasing first a collective moan of dread and then the embarrassed laughter of survival among my fellow passengers.

On the ground I got a better look at them: three bureaucrats, dressed in wrinkle-free suits, with business in the state capital; two ranchers sporting their go-to-town buckles--large silver and turquoise affairs that divided barrel chests from thin, booted legs; a harried mother trying to convince a small child with pressure-stopped ears to yawn or swallow; a visiting in-law, met loudly by a woman in curlers and Bermuda shorts.

I felt exhilarated and out of place, a stranger on a mission no one would suspect: within the hour, I was due to become an unmarried father.

The year was 1971 and I was twenty-six years old, ex-would-be hippie, candidate for a Yale doctorate in anthropology, a first-year instructor at a small experimental college in New England. This cloudy afternoon in Pierre was the culmination of a journey I had begun nine months before when, while doing fieldwork in rural Alaska, it occurred to me that I wanted a child, I wanted to be a parent.

I remember precisely the context of this realization. I was living then in a cabin in Tyonek, an Athapaskan-speaking Indian community on the west coast of CookInlet, collecting information about the impact of modernization and oil revenues on the life of this remote fishing village. Much of my time was spent in the study of the local language, linguistically related to Navajo and Apache but distinctly adapted to the subarctic environment.“

Uit: The Golden Land

„Lady Margaret awoke in sudden pain.

Lying in the darkness, trying to determine the hour of the day, she heard the rain pelting the mullioned windows and remembered that she had decided to lie down before dinner.

She must have fallen asleep—

Another sharp pain. No! It's too soon!

With great effort—the baroness was eight months pregnant—she managed to sit up and swing her legs over the side of the bed. It had been daylight when she had come into the bedroom; now it was dark and no lamps were lit. She groped frantically for the bell rope and as she gave it a pull, she felt warm dampness spread beneath her.

"No," she whispered. "Please God, no...." Another sharp pain made her cry out.

By the time the housekeeper arrived, the pains had become stronger and closer together. Mrs. Keen rushed to the bedside, where the glow from her oil lamp fell upon bed sheets soaked in blood. And Her Ladyship-"Dear God," whispered the housekeeper as she eased the shockingly white baroness back down onto the pillows.

"The baby," gasped Lady Margaret. "It's coming...."

Mrs. Keen stared at her. Lady Margaret's long red hair, streaming down her back and over her shoulders, made her seem younger than her twenty-three years. She looked frail and vulnerable. And now the premature pains.

Earlier, when Lady Margaret had said she was feeling out of sorts, Lord Falconbridge had gone himself to fetch the doctor at Willoughby Hall. But that had been hours ago. Had the storm washed the road out? "Don't you worry, Your Ladyship," Mrs. Keen crooned. "Your husband and Dr. Willoughby will be here shortly."

It's Raining In Love

I don't know what it is,

but I distrust myself

when I start to like a girl

a lot.

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace

I like to think (and

the sooner the better!)

of a cybernetic meadow

where mammels and computers

live together in mutually

programming harmony

like pure water

touching clear sky.

Deer Tracks

Beautiful, sobbing
high-geared fucking
and then to lie silently
like deer tracks in the
freshly-fallen snow beside
the one you love.
That's all.

Uit: I Loved a German

"We had heard about it since childhood from our mothers and fathers, older brothers and sisters, relatives and friends. God had burdened the parish with all manner of woe and worry, whereas endless feasts went on at the manor. The parish suffered constant deprivation, even hunger, while the manor enjoyed perpetual affluence, wealth, splendour,"

(,,,)

"We had taken over the manors, and now we hastened to take over their way of life ... We did what we could, in order to adopt, together with the manors, their traditions, customs, way of life, world view, the whole ethical and aesthetic approach to life .... Our heart revolves around the empty abode of our own slave master, as if our conscience were tormenting us."
