Liefst recht omhoog.
Want, zo is haar beloofd, daar zal ze alles zien.

Boswachter

Hij is even terug van weggeweest.
Nu is nu en dan. Toch moet hij morgen
naar het bos, zijn hoofd ligt
nog vol hout. Een stapel zorgen
in een begroeide geest.

Bij zijn bijl, op een sprei
zoekt hij bomen in de kamer.

En te voorschijn in wit schort,
uit een deur in het lover,
komt een zoon, een jager
die hem aan tafel vraagt.
Hij knikt en komt binnenkort.

Uit: The Great Fire

“The expression, not calm but contained, was unrevealing. Siding with the man, the furniture supplied few clues: a secretary of dark wood was fitted in its top section with pigeonholes and small closed drawers. This desk had been so much part of the climate of family life, indivisible from his father's moods -- and even appearing, to the child, to generate them -- that the son had never until now inspected it with adult eyes. For that measure of detachment, a global conflict had been required, a wartime absence, a voyage across the world, a long walk through Asia; a wet morning and strange train.
There was no telephone on the desk, no clock or calendar. A bowl of blown roses, implausibly prominent, had perhaps been borrowed, by the photographer, from another room. On the blotter, two handwritten pages were shielded by the tweedy sleeve. Pens and pencils fanned from a holder alongside new books whose titles, just legible, were those of Oliver Leith's novels in postwar translations. There were bills on a spike, a glass dish of chips, a paperweight in onyx. No imaginable colours, other than those of the foisted flowers; no object that invited, by its form or material, the pressure of a hand. No photograph. Nothing to suggest familiarity or attachment.
The adult son thought the picture loveless. The father who had famously written about love -- love of self, of places, of women and men -- was renowned for a private detachment. His life, and that of his wife, his child, was a tale of dislocation: there were novels of love from Manchuria to Madagascar. The book newly to hand, outcome of a grim postwar winter in Greece, could be no exception. And was called
Parthenon Freeze.”

Disaster at Sea

It was a calm, still day in Yarmouth,

The channel clear and wide,

As the last of the timber sailing ships

Sailed out on the evening tide.

They never saw that ship again;

They searched when it was light,
But that fine old timber vessel sank

That clear and peaceful night.

No one knows what happened

On that night in 1910;

But the crew and her cargo of woodpeckers

Were never seen again.

The Secret

I have tried to write good poetry;

At last I feel I'm winning -

The secret is to put the end

Close to the beginning.

Uit: A Yellow Raft in Blue Water

„I nod to the gate.  I’ll never be ready, but now is as good a time as any.

“Now!” I cry, aloud or to myself I don’t know.  Everything has boiled down to this instant.  …Wheeling and spinning tilting and beating, my breath the song, the horse the dance.  Time is gone.  All the ordinary ways of things, the gettings from here to there, the ones and twos forgot.  The crowd is the color, the whirl of a spun top.  The noises blend into a waving band that flies around us like a ribbon on a string.  Beneath me four feet dance, pounding and leaping and turning and stomping.  My legs flap like wings.  I sail above, first to one side, then to the other, remembering more than feeling the slaps of our bodies together.  Things happen faster than understanding, faster than ideas.  I’m a bird coasting, shot free into the music, spiraling into a place without bones or weight.”

Uit: The Blessing Stone

„It was because of Honoria. She had nearly killed him with her rejection of his marriage proposal. His heart was in mortal pain; there were no salves or ointments for this kind of wound. It wasn't just that she had said no, it was the way she had said it. With a horrified tone: "I could not live with a man who dealt daily with diseased bodies." Matthew didn't blame her. Honoria herself was frail, spending half her time on her retiring couch where she received visitors. Moreover, he himself was not made of heroic proportions. Matthew Lively knew very well what people saw when they looked at him: a pale, nervous young man who frequently stuttered, and, despite his college education, was altogether too unsure of himself.

Still, her rejection had wounded him, and so Matthew Lively, twenty-five years old and finishing his glass of milk, decided he was done with women forever.

Hannah Lively, daughter of Molly Prentice who had once been the love interest of Alexander Hamilton, came into the kitchen, a plain woman in black bombazine, a small lace cap on her head.

"Was it a good reading, Mother?" Matthew asked. He was proud of the fact that his mother was one of the most sought after spiritualists on the East Coast.

"The spirits came through very clear today. Even without the aid of the Blessing Stone." Then she gave him an expectant look.

"Mother, the stone pointed West!"

She nodded sagely. "The Guiding Spirit in the crystal knows where your destiny lies."

Sixty years old and considered a true prophetess by their many friends and neighbors, Hannah Lively believed absolutely in the power of the crystal, therefore Matthew didn't tell her that he had had to spin it eleven times before it finally pointed West. He reckoned the stone just needed warming up.“

A Boat

O beautiful

was the werewolf

in his evil forest.

We took him

to the carnival

and he started

crying

when he saw

the Ferris wheel.

Electric

green and red tears

flowed down

his furry cheeks.

He looked

like a boat

out on the dark

water.

Kafka's Hat

With the rain falling

surgically against the roof,

I ate a dish of ice cream

that looked like Kafka's hat.

Rief da ein Mann?

Zur Nacht, weil alle Menschen schliefen,

rief da ein Mann? O wie er rief!

Zweimal! Zwei Rufe, die mich riefen.

O Trägheit, daß ich weiter schlief.

Vom Flusse her ein wildes Klingen

zweimal, und dann war wieder Nacht.

Und ich verschlief das Hilfebringen

zweimal und bin nicht aufgewacht.

Bin nicht vom Lager aufgesprungen

zur Tür und fragen, was es sei.

Ich schlief, ich schlief, bis es verklungen.

O der du nach mir riefst, verzeih.

------------

Heut morgen kommen sie und fragen:

Wer rief und hat die Nacht gestört?

Rief man nach Gott? Und ich muß sagen:

Ich schlief und habe nichts gehört.

Es war nicht Gott, dem es gegolten,

ich war es, den ein Bruder rief.

Zwei Rufe, die zum Bruder wollten

vom Bruder, und der Bruder schlief.

Es rief, damit es mich erwecke,

zur Nacht zweimal vom Flusse her:

O Mensch, wie liebst du deine Decke,

dein Bett und deinen Schlaf so sehr.

Wie dumpf und stumpf ist dein Gewissen,

wie satt und matt du im Erhörn!

Ach, daß erst Schüsse fallen müssen,

aus Deinem Schlaf dich aufzustörn.

-------------------

Ja, ich bin träg und taub geschaffen

und ließ dich letzte Nacht allein.

Heut Nacht werd ich gewiß nicht schlafen;

heut, Bruder, muß ich selber schrein.

Uit: The boy and the butterfly

„A host of spring flowers ran riot in a meadow sheltered from the north wind by a Florest trakt. They waited to be plucked – but in vain; and so some of them were shedding their petaks already. A bee buzzed by, but no pikker was he, nor the butterfly that hovered over them.

So the flowers were beginning to lose hope and turned to God in despair, Andod sent them a boy who loved flowers and delighted in picking them.

And when the boy came to the meadow, the flowers were overjoyed and cried inchorus: „Pluck me!

Pluck me!“ And their heady fragrance filled the air.

Exhilarated, the boy approached the first flower, and stretched out his hand to pluck it, when all at once a butterfly rose up in flight – a coloured piece of silk, a gaudy bit of velvet that gleamed like a

jewel with a snowflake’s deceptive luste.

It flew a few paces and again setted on a flower, spreading out is wings in the sunlight.

„Let me catsh you!“ shouted the boy, forgetting all about the flowers.

„Go ahead!“ the butterfly replied. „Catch me if you can!“

„I won’t hurt you, I’ll just take a look and let you go again!“

„Catch me – catch me if you can!“

„I promise not to touch you – only let me have a look close at hand.“

„First catch me – then d oas you pease!“

And so the boy did his best to catch the butterfly.

He began by approaching it stealthily; but hardly had he taken a step when the butterfly flitted to another flower, just out of reach, fluttering its pretty wings asi f to tease the pursuer“.

How to Read Me

TO turn my volumes o’er nor find

(Sweet unsuspicious friend!)

Some vestige of an erring mind

To chide or discommend,

Believe that all were lov’d like you

With love from blame exempt,

Believe that all my griefs were true

And all my joys but dreamt.

Child of a Day

Child of a day, thou knowest not

The tears that overflow thy urn,

The gushing eyes that read thy lot,

Nor, if thou knewest, couldst return!

And why the wish! the pure and blest

Watch like thy mother o'er thy sleep.

O peaceful night! O envied rest!

Thou wilt not ever see her weep.

Uit: Der Bezirksschreiber

„Allerheiligen.
