Uit: The Babysitter

“His little hand. clutching the bar of soap, lathers shyly a narrow space between her shoulderblades. She is doubled forward against her knees, buried in rich suds, peeking at him over the edge of her shoulder. The soap slithers out of his grip and plunks into the water. “I... I dropped the soap,‘ he whispers. She: ‘Find it.‘

‘I dream of Jeannie with the light brown pubic hair!‘ ‘Harry! Stop that! You're drunk!‘ But they're laughing. they're all laughing, damn! he's feeling pretty goddamn good at that. and now he just knows he needs that aspirin. Watching her there, her thighs spread for him, on the couch, in the tub. hell, on the kitchen table for that matter. he tees off on Number Nine. and - _whap_ swats his host's wife on the bottom. ‘Hole in one!’ he shouts. “Harry? Why can't his goddamn wife Dolly ever get happy-drunk instead of sour-drunk all the time? ‘Gonna be tough Sunday. old buddy!’ ‘You're pretty tough right now, Harry,‘ says his host.

***

The babysitter lunges forward, grabs the boy by the arms and hauls him off the couch, pulling two cushions with him, and drags him towards the bathroom. He lashes out, knocking over an endtable full of magazines and ashtrays. ~You leave my brother alone!‘ Bitsy cries and grabs the sitter around the waist. Jimmy jumps on her and down they all go. On the silent screen. there's a fade-in to a dark passageway in an old apartment building in some foreign country. She kicks out and somebody falls between her legs. Somebody else is sitting on her face. ‘Jimmyl Stop that!‘ the babysitter laughs. her voice muffled.“

Uit:West of Sunset

“That spring he holed up in the Smokies, in a tired resort hotel by the asylum so he could be closer to her. A bout of pneu- monia over Christmas  had provoked  a flare-up of his TB, and he was still recovering. The mountain air was supposed to help. Days he wrote in his bathrobe, drinking Coca-Cola to keep himself going, holding off on the gin till nightfall—a small point of pride—sipping on the dark verandah as couples strolled among the fireflies rising from the golf course. Outside of town, Highland Hospital  crowned  the  ridgeline,  a  spired  Gothic  palace  in  the clouds worthy of a bewitched princess. He couldn’t afford it, as he couldn’t afford the other private clinics they’d tried, but he pleaded poverty and hashed out a discount with the trustees, begging the money from his agent—an onerous form of credit, borrowing against stories he’d yet to imagine.
He had no choice. At Pratt they left her too much alone. She’d strangled herself with a ripped pillowcase, nearly succeeding, the livid band across her windpipe a reminder. One night while she was strapped to her bed, the Archangel Michael appeared, glow- ing, and told her the world would end unless she could move the seven nations to repent. She took to wearing white and memoriz-ing the Bible. In her paintings the faceless damned writhed in fire.
At Highland her new doctor believed in diet and exercise. No cigarettes, no sweets. Every day the patients hiked a prescribed distance, sturdy nurses spurring them on like coaches. She lost weight, her skin tented over her cheekbones, her nose a blade, re- calling that awful year in Paris she whittled her body down trying to remake herself for the ballet. Yet not manic, not frenzied like then, her knees bruised black, feet cracked from practice. After her insulin treatments she was calm, subdued by sheer lack of energy. Instead of sinners she painted flowers, big blowzy blooms just as corrupt. She could sleep now, she said, a mercy he envied. Her cur- sive returned, neat lines running like waves down the page in- stead of the bunched, slanted hand he’d come to dread.”

“National Socialism was toxic, in the truest sense of the word. It gave the world a chemical legacy that still atïects us today: a poison that refuses to disappear. On one hand, the Nazis presented themselves as clean-cut and enforced a strict, ideologically underpinned anti-drug policy with propagandistic pomp and draconian punishments. In spite of this, a particularly potent and perfidious substance became a popular product under Hitler. This drug carved out a great career for itself all over the German Reich, and later in the occupied countries of Europe. Under the trademark ‘Pervitin', this little pill became the accepted Volksdroge. or ‘people’s drug“, and was on sale in every chemist ’s shop. It wasn‘t until 1939 that its use was restricted by making Pervitin prescription-only, and the pill was not subjected to regulation until the Reich Opium Law in 1941.
Its active ingredient, methamphetamine, is now either illegal or strictly regulated, but, with the number of consumers currently at over 100 million and rising, it counts today as our most popular poison. Produced in hidden labs by chemical amateurs, usually in adulterated form, this substance has come to be known as ‘crystal meth‘. Usually ingested nasally in high doses, the crystalline form of this so-called horror drug has gained unimaginable popularity all over Europe, with an exponential number of first-time users. This upper, with its dangerously powerful kick, is used as a party drug, for boosting performance in the workplace, in oflices, even in parliaments and at universities. It banishes both sleep and hunger while promising euphoria, but in the form of crystal meth, it is a potentially destructive and highly addictive substance. Hardly anyone knows about its rise in Nazi Germany.“

Ars Poetica

At dawn, I march ahead
Holding in my arms
The white wreath
Of mother's hair.
After me, it's you, beloved,
Holding in your bosom
The ardent wreath
Of your tear.

At the hind, comes Death.
He carries the scarlet wreath
Of my blood -
He, who never gives anything
Back.

And we all keep marching ahead
Illuminated
By an incomprehensible feeling
Of joy.

In deiner Sprache

In gleicher Sprache
Weinen alle Menschen,
In gleicher Sprache
Lacht die ganze Welt,
Aber nur in deiner Sprache,
Man kann den Schmerz lieb lindern,
Und deine Freude
In Gesang verändern.

In deiner Sprache,
Sehnst du dich nach Mutter,
Der Wein wird edler Wein,
Auch Essen lecker ist.
Und nur in deiner Sprache,
Allein du lachen darfst
Und nur in deiner Sprache
Aus Weinen dich ausruhen kannst…

Wenn du nicht weinen
Und nicht lachen kannst,
Wenn du nicht singen,
Und nicht streicheln darfst,
Mit deinem Land,
Mit deinem Himmel vor,
Du schweigst vor allem
In deiner Sprache auch.

The Truant (Fragment)

Pulled forward with his neck awry,
The little fellow six feet short,
Aware he was about to die,
Committed grave contempt of court
By answering with a flinchless stare
Tile Awful Presence seated there.

The ALL HIGH swore until his face was black.
He called him a coprophagite,
A genus homo, egomaniac,
Third cousin to the family of worms,
A sporozoan from the ooze of night,
Spawn of a spavined troglodyte:
He swore by all the catalogue of terms
Known since the slang of carboniferous Time.
He said that he could trace him back
To pollywogs and earwigs in the slime.
And in his shrillest tenor he began
Reciting his indictment of the man,
Until he closed upon this capital crime —
'You are accused of staging out of key,
(A foul unmitigated dissonance)
Of shuffling in the measures of the dance,
Then walking out with that defiant, free
Toss of your head, banging the doors,
Leaving a stench upon the jacinth floors.
You have fallen like a curse
On the mechanics of my Universe.

'Herewith I measure out your penalty —
Hearken while you hear, look while you see:
I send you now upon your homeward route
Where you shall find
Humiliation for your pride of mind.
I shall make deaf the ear, and dim the eye,
Put palsy in your touch, make mute
Your speech, intoxicate your cells and dry
Your blood and marrow, shoot
Arthritic needles through your cartilage,
And having parched you with old age,
I'll pass you wormwise through the mire;
And when your rebel will
Is mouldered, all desire
Shrivelled, all your concepts broken,
Backward in dust I'll blow you till
You join my spiral festival of fire.
Go, Master of the Revels — I have spoken.'

Uit: Recollections Of My Childhood And Youth

“The trying moment of the day was when he had to go to bed. His parents were extraordinarily prejudiced about bedtime, just when he was enjoying himself most. When visitors had arrived and conversation was well started--none the less interesting to him because he understood scarcely half of what was said--it was: "Now, to bed!"
But there were happy moments after he was in bed, too. When Mother came in and said prayers with him, and he lay there safely fenced in by the tall trellis-work, each bar of which, with its little outward bend in the middle, his fingers knew so well, it was impossible to fall out through them. It was very pleasant, the little bed with its railing, and he slept in it as he has never slept since.
It was nice, too, to lie on his back in bed and watch his parents getting ready to go to the theatre, Father in a shining white shirt and with his curly hair beautifully parted on one side Mother with a crepe shawl over her silk dress, and light gloves that smelled inviting as she came up to say goodnight and good-bye.
I was always hearing that I was pale and thin and small. That was the impression I made on everyone. Nearly thirty years afterwards an observant person remarked to me: "The peculiarity about your face is its intense paleness." Consequently I looked darker than I was; my brown hair was called black.
Pale and thin, with thick brown hair, difficult hair. That was what the hairdresser said--Mr. Alibert, who called Father Erre: "Good-morning, Erre," "Good-bye, Erre." And all his assistants, though as Danish as they could be, tried to say the same.
Difficult hair! "There is a little round place on his crown where the hair will stand up, if he does not wear it rather long," said Mr. Alibert.
I was forever hearing that I was pale and small, pale in particular.
Strangers would look at me and say: "He is rather pale." Others remarked in joke: "He looks rather green in the face." And so soon as they began talking about me the word "thin" would be uttered.”

Presque

A Fontainebleau

Ma cervelle est en mic-mac ;
Bourdonnant comme une ruche,
Mon sang fait tic-tac tic-tac.
Alors je descends au bac
Où chante quelque faraude
Qui me prend pour son verrac.
Je suis le bon gueux qui rôde.

Envoi

Prince au cul bleu comme un lac,
Cogne dont l’œil me taraude,
Pique des deux, va ! Clic, clac !

Il y fixa la gamme avec huit trous égaux ;
Je tressaille, je vibre, et la note s’élance ;
Le chapelet des sons va s’égrenant dans l’air ;
On dirait le babil d’une source au flot clair ;

Cradle-Song For My Son Carl

Little Carl, sleep soft and sweet:
Thou'lt soon enough be waking;
Soon enough ill days thou'lt meet,
Their bitterness partaking.
Earth's an isle with grief o'ercast;
Breathe our best, death comes at last,
We but dust forsaking.

Once, where flowed a peaceful brook
Through a rye-field's stubble,
Stood a little boy to look
At himself; his double.
Sweet the picture was to see;
All at once it ceased to be;
Vanished like a bubble!

And thus it is with life, my pet,
And thus the years go flying;
Live we wisely, gaily, yet
There's no escape from dying.
Little Carl on this must muse
When the blossoms bright he views
On spring's bosom lying.

Slumber, little friend so wee;
Joy thy joy is bringing.
Clipped from paper thou shalt see
A sleigh, and horses springing;
Then a house of cards so tall
We will build and see it fall,
And little songs be singing.
