Rijm

De velden zijn vol rijm vanavond. Als ik nu
verdwaal wil ik jou tegenkomen
en je vragen naar de weg. Wat zou je klein
en stil zijn, vol gebaren en
onuitgesproken tekens.

Ik ken je niet, maar je bent mooi;
met jou vertrekkend word ik mooi.

Uit: The Lord of the Rings (The Hobbit)

“Where else should I be?” said the wizard. “All the same I am pleased to find you remember something about me. You seem to remember my fireworks kindly, at any rate, and that is not without hope. Indeed for your old grandfather Took’s sake, and for the sake of poor Belladonna, I will give you what you asked for.”
“I beg your pardon, I haven’t asked for anything!”
“Yes, you have! Twice now. My pardon. I give it you. In fact I will go so far as to send you on this adventure. Very amusing for me, very good for you—and profitable too, very likely, if you ever get over it.”
“Sorry! I don’t want any adventures, thank you. Not today. Good morning! But please come to tea—any time you like! Why not tomorrow? Come tomorrow! Good bye!” With that the hobbit turned and scuttled inside his round green door, and shut it as quickly as he dared, not to seem rude. Wizards after all are wizards.
“What on earth did I ask him to tea for!” he said to himself, as he went to the pantry. He had only just had breakfast, but he thought a cake or two and a drink of something would do him good after his fright.
Gandalf in the meantime was still standing outside the door, and laughing long but quietly. After a while he stepped up, and with the spike on his staff scratched a queer sign on the hobbit’s beautiful green front-door. Then he strode away, just about the time when Bilbo was finishing his second cake and beginning to think that he had escaped adventures very well.
The next day he had almost forgotten about Gandalf. He did not remember things very well, unless he put them down on his Engagement Tablet: like this: Gandalf Tea Wednesday. Yesterday he had been too flustered to do anything of the kind.”

Uit: Crongton Knights

“My mum told me I was named after her Scottish granddad, Danny McKay. Apparently, once a year, he served food to the best golfers in the world in some top-ranking hotel by the sea. I don’t love golf but Mum was proper proud of her grandpops. She wanted to keep his surname so I was branded McKay Medgar Tambo. It’s not the coolest of names but it smacks the insults out of the Gateau Kid, Slop Bag and Dumpling-Butt which I had to put up with in primary school.
My maths teacher, Ms Riddlesworth, reckons I’m fourteen and fifteen–sixteenths years old. I dunno how she worked that one out. I live in Dickens House, South Crongton estate, with my seventeen-year-old brother, Nesta, and my dad. Mum died a few years ago. Pops works the twilight zone in a biscuit factory. He drives a forklift truck in the warehouse. Going by his curses, he hates his boss.
My bredrens are Lemar ‘Liccle Bit’ Jackson and Jonah ‘Rapid’ Hani. I’ve known them long before anyone called me a nickname.
Six months ago, Liccle Bit had some serious drama with the top G of our estate, Manjaro. He couldn’t quite keep out of Manjaro’s way cos the crime duke is the daddy to the baby of Bit’s sis, Elaine – a bonkers situation. Bit made things a trailer-load worse for himself when Manjaro manipulated him to hide a gun. It was a time when beef between North and South Crong exploded with the merkings of at least three bruvs.
Bit was ordered to return Manjaro’s gun. My bredren finally came to his senses and put up resistance. Him and his gran got a beat-down for his trouble but, since that day, Manjaro went all fugitive. The feds hunted him high and searched for him low. They couldn’t find him. Graffiti in South Crong shouted ‘Manjaro woz ’ere’ and ‘Manjaro woz there’. The feds and the social services offered Bit’s fam a flat in Ashburton – they turned it down. Bit explained it was on the eleventh floor and in that tiny castle you couldn’t swing a baby’s dummy.”

In The City Of Night (Fragment)

City of vermilion curtains, city whose windows drip with crimson, tawdry, tinselled,
sensual city, throw me pitilessly into your crowds.
City filled with women's faces leering at the passers by,
City with doorways always open, city of silks and swishing laces, city where bands
bray dance-music all night in the plaza,
City where the overscented light hangs tepidly, stabbed with jabber of the crowd,
city where the stars stare coldly, falsely smiling through the smoke-filled air,
City of midnight,
Smite me with your despair.
City of emptiness, city of the white façades, city where one lonely dangling lantern
wavers aloft like a taper before a marble sarcophagus, frightening away the ghosts;
City where a single white-lit window in a motionless blackened house-front swallows
the hosts of darkness that stream down the street towards it;
City above whose dark tree-tangled park emerges suddenly, unlit, uncannily, a grey
ghostly tower whose base is lost in the fog, and whose summit has no end.
City of midnight,
Bury me in your silence.
City of night,
Wrap me in your folds of shadow.

Uit: Oden und Epoden

XII.
Marianische Liebe

Brennende Wunde.

Wo du Ihr, o meiner Diana, folgest,
Neidenswerther Chor der Begleiterinnen,
Künde, wohl verlezt von geliebten Flammen
Glühe die Brust mir.

Uit: Mrs. Caudle's Curtain Lectures

"Do you hear that shutter, how it's banging to and fro?Yes,--I know what it wants as well as you; it wants a new fastening. I was going to send for the blacksmith to-day, but now it's out of the question:
NOW it must bang of nights, since you've thrown away five pounds.
"Ha! there's the soot falling down the chimney.
If I hate the smell of anything, it's the smell of soot. And you know it; but what are my feelings to you? SWEEP THE CHIMNEY! Yes, it's all very fine to say sweep the chimney--but how are chimneys to be swept--how are they to be paid for by people who don't take care of their five pounds?
"Do you hear the mice running about the room?
I hear them. If they were to drag only you out of bed, it would be no matter. SET A TRAP FOR THEM! Yes, it's easy enough to say--set a trap for 'em.But how are people to afford mouse-traps, when every day they lose five pounds?
"Hark!
I'm sure there's a noise downstairs. It wouldn't at all surprise me if there were thieves in the house. Well, it MAY be the cat; but thieves are pretty sure to come in some night. There's a wretched fastening to the back-door; but these are not times to afford bolts and bars, when people won't take care of their five pounds.”

Uit:Fourth of July Creek

"The cop flicked his cigarette to the dirt-and-gravel road in front of the house, and touched back his hat over his hairline as the social worker drove up in a dusty Toyota Corolla. Through the dirty window, he spotted some blond hair falling, and he hiked in his gut, hoping that the woman in there would be something to have a look at. Which is to say he did not expect what got out: a guy in his late twenties, maybe thirty, pulling on a denim coat against the cold morning air blowing down the mountain, ducking back into the car for a moment, reemerging with paperwork. His brown corduroy pants faded out over his skinny ass, the knees too. He pulled that long hair behind his ears with his free hand and sauntered over.
“Name’s Pete,” the social worker said, tucking the clipboard and manila folder under his arm, shaking the cop’s hand. “We’re usually women,” he added, smiling with an openness that put the cop at ill ease.
The cop just replied with his own name-“Eugene”-took back his hand, and coughed into his fist. The social worker pointed at the cop’s badge with his chin, a seven-pointed nickel star with MONTANA chased inside it, mountains on the left, plains on the right, a sun, a river.
“Lookit mine,” Pete said, pulling out a flimsy laminate from his wallet. “I keep telling them I need a badge that don’t look like it came out of a damn cereal box.”
The cop didn’t have a ready opinion about that. He burnished a smudge off his own shield with a plump red thumb and turned toward the house. It abutted a steep hill and was poorly maintained, if at all. Peeling paint, a porch swing dangling from one rusting chain, a missing Windowpane taped over with torn cardboard. Couch cushions, half a blow-dryer, some lengths of phone cable, a plastic colander, and broken crockery littered the yard. Pieces of clothing slung up in the cedar shrubs like crude scarecrows, and the grass erupted in tall disordered bunches, stalks scarecrows, and the grass erupted in tall disordered bunches, stalks shooting through the warped porch boards, at places Window-high. The screen door hung open behind Where the mother and her son sat.
“Shit,” Pete said. “You had to cuff them.”
“That or they’s gonna kill each other.”
