is mij nog niet gezegd. Dan zacht bewegen;

muziek die neerdaalt uit een instrument
waarop ik lang geleden heb gespeeld.
De klank verstoort mijn evenwicht. Het is mij onbekend
wat men hier speelt, de compositie lijkt verdeeld

in toen en nu; mijn vingervlugheid is gelijk.
De vleugel glanst, haar draagkracht even sterk,
zoals de lichte Arabesque die ik ontwijk
als ik mij tot herinnering beperk.

Zie, mijn vader prijst mijn spel,
geeft richtlijnen, streelt nu mijn moeders hand.
Tijd valt uit elkaar in onverdraaglijk getel.

Een verleden

Werkelijk voorbij kan niets ooit zijn;

Hippogriff

To look at this fictitious steed
You'd think some mixed-up farmer
Had crossed an eagle with a horse.
It carries knights in armor
Through cloud fields at terrific speed.
I wish the Hippogriff
Would take me for a ride. Of course
It's not real.
But oh, if . . .!

Barking Dog Blues

I hear those barking dog blues
Every getting-out-of-bed ofday,
Barking dog blues
That chase my other blues away.

Mister Municipal Dog-Catcher
Won't you throw me in your pound?
Cause I just might bite somebody
If you leave me running round.

Baby, some men want to marry-
Me, I'd rather go to jail.
You drive me round in circles
Likeatinmntiedtomyuil.

Quit your messing round my little dog
Cause my big dog got a bone.
If you don’t want my big dog
Leave my little dog alone.

Hear me barking Monday morning
In the driving rain.
I’ll lay down in your kennel
But I won’t wear your chain.

Narcissus Suitor

He touched her and her gooseflesh crept-
He loved her as it were
Not for her depth nor clarity
But what he saw in her.

Drew her up Wobbling in his arms,
Laid lips by her smooth cheek
And would have joined the two of him
In one cohesive Greek

When soft by his obdurate car
A pair of ripples parsed
And syllables distinct and pure
Came bubbling up and burst:

‘Oh keep your big feet to yourself
Good sir, goddammit stop!
I’m not the pool you think I am!
I’ll scream! I'll call a cop!

Uit: Children of Light

“Lu Anne was lying in the stack of seed husks.
“Well,” he said, “that looks comfortable.”
“Oh, yes,” she said, “very comfortable.”
He lay down beside her in the warm sun and buried his arms in the seeds.
“Downright primal.”
“Primal is right,” Lu Anne said. She laughed at him and shook her head. “You don’t know what this pile is do you? Do you? Because you’re a city boy.”
She sat in the pile, sweeping aside the seed husks with a rowing motion until the manure it covered was exposed and she sat naked in a mix of mud and droppings, swarming with tiny pale creatures that fled the light.
“There it is,” she told Walker. “The pigshit at the end of the rainbow. Didn’t you always know it was there?”
“You’ll get an infection,” Walker said. He was astonished at what Lu Anne had revealed to him. “You’re cut.”
“Out here waiting to be claimed, Gordon. Ain’t it mystical? How about a drink, man?”
When he bent to offer her the bottle she pulled him down into the pile beside her.
“I had a feeling you’d do that,” he said. “I thought … ”
“Stop explaining,” Lu Anne told him. Just shut up and groove on your pigshit. You earned it.”
“I guess it must work something like an orgone box,” Walker suggested.
“Walker,” Lu Anne said, “when will it cease, the incessant din of your goddam speculation? Will only death suffice to shut your cottonpicking mouth?”
“Sorry,” Walker said.
“Merciful heaven! Show the man a pile of shit and he’ll tell you how it works.” She made a wad of mud and pig manure and threw it in his face. “There, baby. There’s your orgone. Have an orgone-ism.”
She watched Walker attempt to brush the manure from his eyes.“

The Courts Of Love

The courts of love are fair to see
Built of shining masonry
Quaintly carved in olden day
By the fairies’ hands they say.
Underneath the arching trees
Gentle lovers take their ease
Chanting songs of Ladye Love,
Whilst the birds which flit above
Make the golden courts to ring
With the joyous song they sing.
“Love is Lord of everything”.

Maidens in the Month of May
Watch the Knights who ride that way
Who for noble deeds and name
Are received with fair acclaim.
At the court they linger long,
Rest is sweet and Love is strong.
Then at quiet eventide
Lovers through the gardens glide
Speaking softly, whilst a ring
Of twilight fairies strangely sing
“Love is Lord of everything”.

These hands and this head

smoke from the locomotive hits us in the face,

And suddenly—peace, as if
I were alone in the world,
and the blizzard out the window, blizzard in the garden,
blizzard in the fields.

Uit: Glas im Bauch

„Ton

„And finally, our twelve points go to: Germany!“
Love, I got it bad for you, I saved the best I have for you, you sometimes make me sad and blue.
„Shit!“
Edgar gräbt seinen Daumen in meinen Arm.
„This is not real!“
Tut mir leid. Was will sie mir damit sagen? Was tut ihr leid?

Uit: The Ordinary Princess

“This story was written many moons ago under an apple tree in an orchard in Kent, which is one of England's prettiest counties . . . I had read at least twenty of the [fairy tales] when I noticed something that had never struck me before--I suppose because I had always taken it for granted. All the princesses, apart from such rare exceptions as Snow White, were blond, blue-eyed, and beautiful, with lovely figures and complexions and extravagantly long hair. This struck me as most unfair, and suddenly I began to wonder just how many handsome young princes would have asked a king for the hand of his daughter if that daughter had happened to be gawky, snub-nosed, and freckled, with shortish mouse-colored hair? None, I suspected. They would all have been of chasing after some lissome Royal Highness with large blue eyes and yards of golden hair and probably nothing whatever between her ears! It was in that moment that a story about a princess who turned out to be ordinary jumped into my mind, and the very next morning I took my pencil box and a large rough-notebook down to the orchard and, having settled myself under an apple tree in full bloom, began to write . . . the day was warm and windless and without a cloud in the sky. A perfect day and a perfect place to write a fairy story.”
