Tuin I
alsof we misschien toch

Ludwik! Why Ludwik? Leo more likely, the priest, Venomie maybe, even Lena—but Ludwik! And yet this FACT was hanging, a hanging fact, a Ludwik-like fact was hanging, hitting one on the head, a fact that was big, heavy, hanging down, something like a bull roaming about on the loose, an enormous fact on a pine tree, and with shoes ...
[…]
Indeed, I was looking at this hanging man just as I had looked in those bushes at the sparrow.
And pam, pam, pam, pam! One, two, three, four! The hanged sparrow, the hanging stick, the strangled-hanged cat, Ludwik hanged. How neatly it fit together! What consistency! A stupid corpse was becoming a logical corpse—though the logic was both heavy-handed ... and too much my own ... personal ... so ... separate ... private.
I had nothing left but to think. I thought. In spite of everything I strained to turn it into a readable story and—I thought—what if he were the one who had hanged the sparrow? He drew the arrows, hanged the stick, indulged in these pranks ... some kind of mania, the mania of hanging that led him here, to hang himself ... what a maniac! I remembered Leo telling me when we sat on the tree stump, in all honesty: that he, Leo, had nothing to do with it. So it was Ludwik? Mania, obsession, lunacy …“

Lustbarkeitsgesetz
Gesetz zum Schutz! Gesetz zum Schmutz!
Es pufft aus dem Talare,
Der Sittlichkeit zum Schutz und Trutz,
Das Schöne, Gute, Wahre!
Das Hemd der Sexualität,
Das heute etwas offen steht,
Das wird verflucht und zugenäht.
Es steckt den Operngucker
Durch jedes Astloch sehr diskret
Der Mucker.
Germania steigt ins keusche Bett
Und schnallt das stolze Brustpaar
Ins Bäumersche Reformkorsett,
Da wirkt es nicht mehr lustbar.
Der Pastor wandelt Arm in Arm
Mit Wohlfahrtstante und Gendarm
Und mit verstopftem Tugenddarm.
Sie streuen Glaubenszucker
Und schlagen christlichen Alarm,
Die Mucker.
Man steigt voll Mut in jeden Schlamm,
Von Wedekind bis Schnitzler,
Und nimmt errötend Anstoß am
Perversen Seelenkitzler.
Der kulturelle Restbestand
Wird bald gekreuzigt und verbrannt.
Dann stehn sie wieder Hand in Hand,
die zugeknöpften Ducker
Denn es regiert im Vaterland
Der Mucker!

die mitte der stadt
in dir: abstoßende geschäftigkeit, pulsierendes
fickt niemand.

Uit: Breath
„WE COME SWEEPING up the tree-lined boulevard with siren and lights and when the GPS urges us to make the next left we take it so fast that all the gear slams and sways inside the vehicle. I don’t say a thing. Down the dark suburban street I can see the house lit like a cruise ship.
Got it, she says before I can point it out.
Feel free to slow down.
Making you nervous, Bruce?
Something like that, I murmur.
But the fact is I feel brilliant. This is when I feel good, when the nerve-ends are singing, the gut tight with anticipation. It’s been a long, slow shift and there’s never been any love lost between Jodie and me. At handover I walked up on a conversation I wasn’t supposed to hear. But that was hours ago. Now I’m alert and tingly with dread. Bring it on.
At the call address Jodie kills the siren and wheels around to reverse up the steep drive. She’s amped, I guess, and a bit puffed up with a sense of her own competence. Not a bad kid, just green. She doesn’t know it but I’ve got daughters her age.
When she hits the handbrake and calls in our arrival at the job I jump out and rip the side door back to grab the resus kit. Beneath the porch steps on the dewy grass is a middle-aged bloke hugging himself in silence and I can see in a moment that although he’s probably done his collarbone he’s not our man. So I leave him to Jodie and go on up to announce myself in the open doorway.
In the living room two teenage girls hunch at opposite ends of a leather couch.
Upstairs? I ask.
One of them points without even lifting her head, and already I know that this job’s become a pack and carry. Usually they see the uniform and light up with hope, but neither of them gives me as much as a glance.“
