Hymn

My father's silence I cannot brook. By now he must know I live and well.

My heart is nickel, unearthed and sent. We are a manmade catastrophe.

Unable to forgive, deeply mine this earthly light that swells sickly inside.

Like wind I drift westward and profane when the doors of ice slide open.

While he prays my father swallows the sickle moon, its bone sharp path spent.

Preyed upon by calendars of stone unbound the nickel of the mountain in streams.

Mine this awful empty night. Mine this unchiming bell, his unanswered prayers.

Mine the rain-filled sandals, the road out of town. Like a wind unbound this shining river mine.

Sleep Door

a light knocking on the sleep door

like the sound of a rope striking the side of a boat

heard underwater

boats pulling up alongside each other

beneath the surface we rub up against each other

will we capsize in

the surge and silence

of waking from sleep

you are a lost canoe, navigating by me

I am the star map tonight

all the failed echoes

don't matter

the painted-over murals

don't matter

you can find your way to me

by the faint star-lamp

we are a fleet now

our prows zeroing in

praying in the wind

to spin like haywire compasses

toward whichever direction

will have us

Uit: Exile (Vertaald door Don Bartlett)

“I wake up early with blood on the sheet, a headache and aching limbs. I can hear the girl in the kitchen. We’re leaving mid-morning. I crumple up the bed linen and chuck it in the laundry basket. Walk into the sitting room. Alison is standing in a big T-shirt in the middle of the floor, looking sleepy.
   ‘Where’s Dad?’ she asks.
‘I don’t know,’ I say. I look outside – his Land Rover has gone. The only clue: missing toothbrush, toothpaste and weapon. Without saying a word, leaving a note. Just gone. For how long? Who knows? Mum is sitting and drinking coffee on the veranda.
‘He can’t bring himself to say goodbye to Alison,’ she says.
I leap down the slope and into the boat house, sail out and go fishing, with just a mask, snorkel and harpoon. I hover three metres down, and it’s beginning to rain, even though the short rainy season is several months away – it’s frightening. The surface water is lashed into a lather. I hurry upwards. Grey on grey.
Mum is still sitting on the veranda. The rain has stopped.
‘Aren’t you going to do something?’ I ask.
   ‘Why?’ she asks.
   ‘Because …’ I say.
‘You’ve almost left home, and Douglas is away all the time, and I’ve been chasing the employees every single day for years to tell them the same things time and time again. And they don’t take any notice – only if I stand over them. I’m tired. I’m tired of the humidity, of the mosquitoes, of the hotel, of …’
‘Of Douglas, of us,’ I say. Mum looks shocked.
‘Not of all of you,’ she says. Alison appears in the sitting room doorway:
‘You’re tired of yourself,’ she says.
‘Yes,’ Mum says. ‘And Africa. Africa is killing me.’ She looks up at me: ‘If I go to England, will you come with me, Samantha?’ she asks.”

Abiku

Coming and going these several seasons,
Do stay out on the baobab tree,
Follow where you please your kindred spirits
If indoors is not enough for you.
True, it leaks through the thatch
When flood brim the banks,
And the bats and the owls
Often tear in at night through the eaves,
And at harmattan, the bamboo walls
Are ready tinder for the fire
That dries the fresh fish up on the rack.
Still, it's been the healthy stock
To several fingers, to many more will be
Who reach to the sun.
No longer then bestride the threshold
But step in and stay
For good. We know the knife scars
Serrating down your back and front
Like beak of the sword-fish,
And both your ears, notched
As a bondsman to this house,
Are all relics of your first comings.
Then step in, step in and stay
For her body is tired,
Tired, her milk going sour
Where many more mouths gladden the heart.

Ostern

Judas und Jesus sind wieder da.
ein kämpferisches Paar.
Judas könnte Jesus sein.
dann wäre Jesus Judas.

Maria Magdalena sagt, küsst euch, was sie tun.

Nun wissen wir , was geschieht,
sagt Judas. Sagt Jesus,
wir sind noch nicht tot,
das Martyrium beginnt erst.

Maria Magalena bleibt allein
und weint, muss ihren alten Beruf
wieder aufnehmen, diened mit Brust
und Schoß.Kunden , die nicht bezahlen
wollen, erschreckt sie
mit einem Heiligenschein.

Elegy for the Dying Dog

Tomorrow he will die.
For now, though, see him drowsing in the shade.
A cardinal cracks the red whip of its flight.
Frail butterflies—the metalmark,
The spicebush swallowtail—are lobbed
Like painted tissue on the air.
The wind, as it might carve on fields of wheat,
Combs over his black coat. I’ve set him there
As water irises prepare
Their gold unfolding in the rain-fresh pond.
Last meal: Steamed rice. Grilled strips of steak.
Last lazy afternoon. Last hour
To watch the clouds drift like meringues,
To watch them blended into tones of peach
Then deepen to the dusky tints of plums.
One last command to heed or disobey,
But it’s not me who’s calling Virgil now,
It’s Death who’s calling, calling, calling,
And he comes.

Folg mir in mein Domizil

Folg mir in mein Domizil,
liebes Kind, und frag nicht viel.
Wirst schon alles lernen,
wirst schon alles sehn,

(Fragment)

C'est pour sauver la mémoire
De vos immortels secours ;
C'est pour vous pour votre gloire,
Que vous prolongez nos jours.
Non, non, vos bontés sacrées
Ne seront point célébrées
Dans l'horreur des monuments :
La Mort, aveugle et muette,
Ne sera point l'interprète
De vos saints commandements.

Mais ceux qui de sa menace,
Comme moi, sont rachetés,
Annonceront à leur race
Vos célestes vérités.
J'irai, Seigneur, dans vos temples,
Réchauffer par mes exemples
Les mortels les plus glacés,
Et, vous offrant mon hommage,
Leur montrer l'unique usage
Des jours que vous leur laissez.

Uit: The Correspondence of Alexander Herzen with James de Rothschild

       (Vertaald door Derek Offord)

“11 September 1849, from Geneva,

I have had the pleasure this morning of receiving your kind letter of 3 September and I am writing to you to repeat my request about the 24,000 francs to be remitted to one of my compatriots. Here are some new guarantees that I propose.

1. I have received four banker's drafts on Mr Roug. de Löwenberg through the House of Colley and Redlich, [and] the total of these drafts is 30,000 francs, [so] I can repay you the sum of 24,000 straightaway. I would even have done so now, but the drafts are in the name of Mme Louise Haag and Mme is at present in Zurich.

2. In the event that Mr de Rothschild does not wish to entrust the 24,000 to me until the dispatch of these banker's drafts, I shall be able to send him the Belgian registration document that the House has purchased, as you probably recall.

I shall be awfully obliged to you if you would drop me a line about this and say in addition what the formalities are for transfer or sale of the Belgian holding.

Incidentally, the bond from the Moscow Bank must be realized soon, [since] it was made over on 10 August.

Trusting entirely to your experience, in accordance with your advice I shall choose the 6% New York as long as the rate of exchange goes no higher than 114. I do not place much reliance on the stability of the old world – it is too old. I think that to write about the purchase of the 10,000 piastres would be the right thing to do.

I have further sums that I should like to have transferred from St Petersburg but I shall write about this on another occasion.

I remain yours faithfully, Your devoted servant, Alex. Herzen.”

La pièce était touchante, et le texte était bon ;
Elle parlait au cœur non moins qu’à la raison ;

“Act I
Scene I

The summit of Sevan. A ruin amidst the rocks. Twilight.
The FATHER SUPERIOR is seated on a rock, his chin resting on his hand. As he pensively looks down. From under arch partially destroyed the MAN IN WHITE emerges. The FATHER SUPERIOR is tall, has thick. Graying hair, and is bareheaded. The MAN IN WHITE is likewise bareheaded, has long black hair and a splendid black beard, braided the Assyrian manner. For a moment they stare at each other in silence.
MAN IN WHITE (jeeringly)
Oh, how you gaze and stare at your kingdom!

FATHER SUPERIOR
Who are you?
MAN IN WHITE
Oh ... Yes! Behold that sight! See those few, small shaky cells. Haven't you built them? Then, that chapel, how it compelled your haste! And lastly, look at your new church, whose dome soars upward day by day, and atop which you shall soon affix the cross with your own hands.
FATHER SUPERIOR
Yes, if the Lord so wills it.”

Last Spring

Once again I have seen the winter
give way to spring;
The wild cherry trees in full bloom,
I saw once again.
Once again I saw the ice
break free from the land,
Saw the snow melt and the foam of the river
swirl and rage.
And the plants and flowers once again
I saw them bloom;
And again I heard the spring song of the birds
expectant of sun and summer.

And I was privileged to see
dancing on the spring hillsides,
Butterflies fluttering and flitting
among the garlands of flowers.
All the life of the spring I saw again
that I so missed.
But I am weary and I ask myself:
is this the last one?
Let it be so: much that was waited
in life I have enjoyed;
I have received more than I deserved
and all may fade.

Once I was myself, in the full flow of spring
that fills my sight,
Once I wanted to find myself a home
and convivial company.
All that the spring presented to me
and even the flowers I plucked,
And I thought it was the ancestral spirits
that danced and sighed,
And so between birch and fir tree I found
a mystery in the spring;
And so the sound of the flute that I cut
seemed full of tears.
