The Remains

I empty myself of the names of others. I empty my pockets.
I empty my shoes and leave them beside the road.
At night I turn back the clocks;
I open the family album and look at myself as a boy.

What good does it do? The hours have done their job.
I say my own name. I say goodbye.
The words follow each other downwind.
I love my wife but send her away.

My parents rise out of their thrones
into the milky rooms of clouds. How can I sing?
Time tells me what I am. I change and I am the same.
I empty myself of my life and my life remains.

In Celebration

You sit in a chair, touched by nothing, feeling
the old self become the older self, imagining
only the patience of water, the boredom of stone.
You think that silence is the extra page,
you think that nothing is good or bad, not even
the darkness that fills the house while you sit watching
it happen. You've seen it happen before. Your friends
move past the window, their faces soiled with regret.
You want to wave but cannot raise your hand.
You sit in a chair. You turn to the nightshade spreading
a poisonous net around the house. You taste
the honey of absence. It is the same wherever
you are, the same if the voice rots before
the body, or the body rots before the voice.
You know that desire leads only to sorrow, that sorrow
leads to achievement which leads to emptiness.
You know that this is different, that this
is the celebration, the only celebration,
that by giving yourself over to nothing,
you shall be healed. You know there is joy in feeling
your lungs prepare themselves for an ashen future,
so you wait, you stare and you wait, and the dust settles
and the miraculous hours of childhood wander in darkness.

‘Kom, we gaan,’ zei Andrea.

“The bus took us to the terminal, and after passing through customs for the passport check and other formalities, I found myself in the duty-free area. I strolled through the shops in the airport mall, and then searched out a cafeteria. I didn’t have to look long before finding one—quite clean—and with dim lighting. Its chairs and tables were made of aluminum, with small cushions placed on the chairs for comfortable sitting. I chose a quite place in the corner, and after ordering an espresso lit a cigarette and observed the travelers. The waitress wasted no time in bringing my coffee, and I sipped slowly scanning the other customers. Sitting at the table across from me was a woman in her twenties. She took my attention for her hair was braided into two ponytails, which gave her a childish look, as if she was a true Lolita. As I was absorbed in these thoughts, she turned to me, asking in Italian if I had a lighter. I said yes, gave it to her, and after lighting her own cigarette she handed it back to me and said, “Grazie mile.”[1] I asked her if she was Italian, to which she said yes, and then added, “I’m Italian, but I have been studying in Montreal, Canada for about the past two years.” “So now you’re headed to Montreal?” “Yes, I was on vacation, but now its over.” Then she added, “I had hoped to spend today in Rome as well, as it’s my birthday today, but since the flights to Montreal are so packed, I had to either take this plane today or else wait a whole other week.
Her manner of speaking went well with her ponytails, for it made her similarly appear as an adolescent, which, incidentally, only made me find her all the more charming”.

Uit: Bastard Out of Carolina

“Anney makes the best gravy in the county, the sweetest biscuits, and puts just enough vinegar in those greens. Glenn nodded, though the truth was he’d never had much of a taste for greens, and his well-educated mama had always told him that gravy was bad for the heart. So he was not ready for the moment when Mama pushed her short blond hair back and set that big plate of hot food down in front of his open hands. Glenn took a bite of gristly meat and gravy, and it melted between his teeth. The greens were salt sweet and fat rich. His tongue sang to his throat; his neck went loose, and his hair fell across his face. It was like sex, that food, too good to waste on the middle of the day and a roomful of men too tired to taste. He chewed, swallowed began to come alive himself. He began to feel for the first time like one of the boys, a grown man accepted by the notorious and dangerous Earle Boatwright, staring across the counter at one of the prettiest woman he’d ever seen. His face went hot, and he took a big drink of ice tea to cool himself.”

Ceci n’est pas un’homme
à Magritte

Das hat zwei Beine darauf
besteht es glaubt sie wären
ihm wichtig je länger je
lieber hätt es vielleicht
einen Fischschwanz

Das hat einen Kopf damit
schüttelt es nickt bis
ihm schwindelt es stimmt
zu & ab nimmt ab & zu:
das hat Gewicht

Das hat auch eine Sprache
gelernt mit seinem Mund
sagt es Ich es ist bestimmt
komisch es findet sich nicht
zum Lachen

Das hat Augen das sieht sich
vor ihm nach sieht es kommen
Das hat Ohren das hört was
sich gehört hat es gehört
ihm doch nicht

Das tut sächlich bloß das
hat keinen Zweck das hat seine
Regel seine Grammatik ist
unpäßlich aber es macht nix
– das vergeht

Das redet auf das Telefon
ein als wär es ein Mensch

Mai-Segen

        An Segen reich.

        An Segen reich.

II

Uit:The Pilgrim Hawk

“Now Cullen had risen and was standing at his wife’s elbow, shaking his finger at the falcon teasingly. I thought that the bird’s great eyes showed only a slight natural bewilderment; whereas a slow sneer came over his face and he turned pale. It was the first revelation I had of the interesting fact that he hated Lucy.
He would willingly have sacrificed a finger tip in order to have an excuse to retaliate, I thought; and I imagined him picking up a chair or a coffee table and going at her with smashing blows. What a difference there is between animals and humans! Lucy no doubt would be disgustingly fierce when her time came; but meanwhile sat pleasantly and idly, in abeyance. Whereas humanity is histrionic, and must prepare and practice every stroke of passion; so half our life is vague and stormy make-believe.
Mrs. Cullen merely looked up at her husband and said in a velvety tone, “The trouble with Ireland, from my point of view, is that they don’t like our having a falcon. Naturally Lord Bild disapproves; but I don’t mind him. He’s so unsure of himself; he’s a Jew furthermore; you can scarcely expect him to live and let live. But our other neighbors and the family are almost as tiresome.”
Cullen thrust the teasing hand in his pocket and returned to his armchair. Her eyes sparkled fast, perhaps with that form of contrition which pretends to be joking. Or perhaps it pleased her to break off the subject of their Irish circumstances and worldly situation and to resume the dear theme of hawk, which meant all the world to her.
The summer before, she told us, an old Hungarian had sold her a trained tiercel. “I took him with me last winter when we stayed with some pleasant Americans in Scotland. There’s a bad ailment called croaks, and he caught that and died. They had installed their American heating, which I think makes an old house damp; don’t you? Then their gamekeeper trapped Lucy and gave her to me. Wasn’t that lucky? I’ve always wanted a real falcon, a haggard, to man and train myself.”
In strict terminology of the sport, she explained, only a female is called a falcon; and a haggard is one that has already hunted on her own account, that is, at least a year old when caught.
Except for that one deformed bit of one foot, Lucy was a perfect example of her species, Falco peregrinus, pilgrim hawk. Her body was as long as her mistress’s arm; the wing feathers in repose a little too long, slung across her back like a folded tent. Her back was an indefinable hue of iron; only a slight patine of the ruddiness of youth still shone on it. Her luxurious breast was white, with little tabs or tassels of chestnut. Out of tasseled pantaloons her legs came down straight to the perch with no apparent flesh on them, enameled a greenish yellow.”
