(Inner Tube)

On the warm July river
head back

upside down river
for a roof

slowly paddling
towards an estuary between trees

there's a dog
learning to swim near me
friends on shore

my head
dips
back to the eyebrow
I'm the prow
on an ancient vessel,
this afternoon
I'm going down to Peru
soul between my teeth

a blue heron
with its awkward
broken backed flap
upside down

one of us is wrong

he
his blue grey thud
thinking he knows
the blue way
out of here

or me

The Time Around Scars

A girl whom I've not spoken to
or shared coffee with for several years
writes of an old scar.
On her wrist it sleeps, smooth and white,
the size of a leech.
I gave it to her
brandishing a new Italian penknife.
Look, I said turning,
and blood spat onto her shirt.

My wife has scars like spread raindrops
on knees and ankles,
she talks of broken greenhouse panes
and yet, apart from imagining red feet,
(a nymph out of Chagall)
I bring little to that scene.
We remember the time around scars,
they freeze irrelevant emotions
and divide us from present friends.
I remember this girl's face,
the widening rise of surprise.

And would she
moving with lover or husband
conceal or flaunt it,
or keep it at her wrist
a mysterious watch.
And this scar I then remember
is a medallion of no emotion.

I would meet you now
and I would wish this scar
to have been given with
all the love
that never occurred between us.

Tagtraum bei Föhn

Droben am Hügel lag ich zur

Traubenzeit zwischen den Quellen

und trank nicht

träumte stattdessen von dir und von

schlimmeren Gegenden -

jähes Erwachen beim Knall der

Schreckschußkanone die Schwärze

wegrauschender Stare

ein Schloß zwei Kirchen drei

Villen zufüßen wußte ich wieder

der Schrecken ist eine

Erfindung

das Schwelen verheerender Brände

ein kleines Kartoffelkrautfeuer

dort drüben

der Steckbrief ein Buchenblatt

das mir im Schlaf aufs

Gesicht fiel

Divertimento

Oder soll ich von

nässenden Steinen sprechen

vom Steinerweichen

wenn sie an ihren vier-

füßigen Tischen die

Münder vollnehmen den

Tod zu verschweigen

tagtäglich

sagen laut

das Gericht heißt

Mahlzeit

Uit: The Final Testament of the Holy Bible

“Some people just ain’t made for the world. Can’t fucking take it. Can’t deal with Momma and Dadda and school teaching you nothing and a fucking job with some motherfucking boss going blah blah blah and bills and neighbors and some kind of bullshit church and having a good credit score and a mortgage and getting married with kids and some kind of mysterious motherfucking retirement plan that don’t ever let you do nothing but put more in and get none back. Lotta people ain’t made for it. They the people you see on the streets, in dirty clothes, talking to themselves, screaming on the corner like they demonized, mumbling and crying, they the ones in your family and your town you always scared of and feeling sorry for and making excuses about, the ones you don’t even thinks is fucking human. They is, they just ain’t made like the rest of you and they can’t deal with it so they go to drinking and getting fucking high and being criminal and getting locked-the-fuck-up and just saying who gives a fuck to all of it. People be thinking they’re crazy and be needing some kind of fucking help, but the help ain’t nothing ’cause a motherfucking soup kitchen or some kind of shelter that can’t hold enough or a nuthouse where we get beat or some charity that’s really about motherfuckers’ friends knowing how good they is and how much they care ain’t nothing but bullshit. And don’t even bring up that made-up motherfucker people be calling God, ’cause that motherfucker don’t even exist, and don’t be bringing up all these so-called houses of God, ’cause they more about killing and hating than they is about helping and loving. Sorry to break the motherfucking news if you ain’t heard it, but that’s it motherfucker, that’s the fucking news.
I been living underground for a long-ass motherfucking time. Living underneath New York fucking City, where there’s tunnels, and there’s tunnels underneath the tunnels, and there’s some more fucking tunnels under those tunnels. Some of ’em empty, some still got trains rolling through ’em, some of ’em gots the subways and some of ’em gots peoples.“

The Sunlight on the Garden

The sunlight on the garden

Hardens and grows cold,

We cannot cage the minute

Within its nets of gold;

When all is told

We cannot beg for pardon.

Our freedom as free lances

Advances towards its end;

The earth compels, upon it

Sonnets and birds descend;

And soon, my friend,

We shall have no time for dances.

The sky was good for flying

Defying the church bells

And every evil iron

Siren and what it tells:

The earth compels,

We are dying, Egypt, dying

And not expecting pardon,

Hardened in heart anew,

But glad to have sat under

Thunder and rain with you,

And grateful too

For sunlight on the garden.

Juffrouw Bussemaker kijkt haar even aan.

Lullaby

Ruin falls on blackening skies

And disaster lies in wait

For the heart and for the state;

Loud the voices in the street

Shout unhealing remedies.

Sleep, beloved, while you may;

Heralds of the Augustan day

That arise as you awake

Can consume but never slake

The strong thirst, intense and deep,

For the peace that need not sleep.

Let the lion have his hour,

Let the evil beasts devour

Leaf and vine and fruit and flower;

Theirs the night but yours the time

Known to the Vergilian clime

When the ancient world, distressed,

Found peace in an infant's breast.

Still remote and gay and young

Sing the stars in ancient peace,

Heralding the great release

In their worldless tongue.

Close your eyes and let them sing

In the morning that will bring

What strange beasts to haunt the spheres?

Revelations? New-found fears?

Let the old world fall away

As the great beasts leave their prey;

Let the dogs and cats destroy

That which they cannot enjoy.

New as life and death and sleep

Shall the cyclic rivers creep,

Bringing learning, art, and thought

New again to be renewed,

Revived, restored, and still uncaught,

The intangible pursued.

Sleep, beloved, in the changes

Light from bright to darkness ranges:

Venus, ocean-young, arises,

Love again the earth surprises

Naked, dreaming, peaceful, free,

Springing from the bitter sea

Of unending destiny.

Uit: A Blink of an Eye (Vertaald door Christina Manetti)

„To demonstrate the difference between theoretical knowledge and practical human activities, I recall the words of an outstanding scientist, Richard Feynman, who worked in Los Alamos on the atom bomb project as one of a select few. In his memoirs Feynman noted that all the theoretical knowledge about atomic and quantum phenomena had proved insufficient to determine which elements would slow neutrons down. This is essential for initiating or halting the chain reaction process. In order to obtain such data, scientists had to examine the properties of a great many elements. Eventually, they discovered that one of the best absorbents of neutrons—especially those that accelerate an atomic reaction—is cadmium. It should be realized that there is still a huge gap in our knowledge, even today, between theoretical physics, which is able to construct an atomic model for a given element, and the chemical properties of that element, which are manifested in complex molecular structures.

For this same reason, however unwittingly, my work falls into two categories: general prognostications and science fiction. In the latter I could indulge in shows of audacious bravery. As I near the end of my life, it seems that I have thought and acted with respect for the principles of the natural sciences. Only rarely did I find myself at a dead end. Now it is time to confront my positions as essayist, those in Summa Technologiæ and in Dialogues—with the realities that face us on the threshold of the twenty-first century, and with the new areas of human activities and knowledge that are beginning to take shape. I do not mean to make myself out to be an omnipotent sage, just a writer who is free.“
