Early Sunday Morning

I used to mock my father and his chums
for getting up early on Sunday morning
and drinking coffee at a local spot
but now I’m one of those chumps.

No one cares about my old humiliations
but they go on dragging through my sleep
like a string of empty tin cans rattling
behind an abandoned car.

It’s like this: just when you think
you have forgotten that red-haired girl
who left you stranded in a parking lot
forty years ago, you wake up

early enough to see her disappearing
around the corner of your dream
on someone else’s motorcycle
roaring onto the highway at sunrise.

And so now I’m sitting in a dimly lit
café
 full of early morning risers
where the windows are covered with soot
and the coffee is warm and bitter.

What the Last Evening Will Be Like

You're sitting at a small bay window
in an empty café by the sea.
It's nightfall, and the owner is locking up,
though you're still hunched over the radiator,
which is slowly losing warmth.

Now you're walking down to the shore
to watch the last blues fading on the waves.
You've lived in small houses, tight spaces—
the walls around you kept closing in—
but the sea and the sky were also yours.

No one else is around to drink with you
from the watery fog, shadowy depths.
You're alone with the whirling cosmos.
Goodbye, love, far away, in a warm place.
Night is endless here, silence infinite.

A Sad State Of Freedom

You waste the attention of your eyes,
the glittering labour of your hands,
and knead the dough enough for dozens of loaves
of which you'll taste not a morsel;
you are free to slave for others--
you are free to make the rich richer.

The moment you're born
they plant around you
mills that grind lies
lies to last you a lifetime.
You keep thinking in your great freedom
a finger on your temple
free to have a free conscience.

Your head bent as if half-cut from the nape,
your arms long, hanging,
your saunter about in your great freedom:
you're free
with the freedom of being unemployed.

You love your country
as the nearest, most precious thing to you.
But one day, for example,
they may endorse it over to America,
and you, too, with your great freedom--
you have the freedom to become an air-base.

You may proclaim that one must live
not as a tool, a number or a link
but as a human being--
then at once they handcuff your wrists.
You are free to be arrested, imprisoned
and even hanged.

There's neither an iron, wooden
nor a tulle curtain
in your life;
there's no need to choose freedom:
you are free.
But this kind of freedom
is a sad affair under the stars.

Episode ’96

„It used to be a town of four nations, and three of them are gone now. They were replaced by newcomers, coming from places both near and far, yet newcomers who still are rooted elsewhere and who do not consider my town to be their own; it often seems to me, that the town hasn’t given them the warmest of welcomes, it hasn’t accepted them, they were only given shelter in homes constructed all too hastily, in concrete high-rises, not at all cosy and to many even scary and big. (…)

And yet, when I look at these parts of my town, I clearly feel the unique spirit emanating from the soil and enchanting my town. I don’t know whether the town will heed the call or not, whether the spirit will recreate it, whether it will let itself be shaped, whether the spirit will bring about some specific change for people living here today and tomorrow and help to create new and original inhabitants. It would be interesting, and in no way unreal. People, though unaware, are greatly guided by the spirit, for it came here to stay, and I think it’s influence can be both felt and suspected. (…)

If I were a geologist, I’d insist that deep in the earth on this location there’s a disturbance; if I were an ethnographer, I’d speak of the diminishing scent of the relics that an ancient community of four ethnic groups left behind. If I were a historian, I’d point out that this is the only capital in the world, borders of which are at the same time borders of three states, or, on the other hand, that this town was always marginal, a stop between other truly large and grandiose towns. I’m neither of them and my profession of a philosopher is so remote from all this. I can only be a small child discovering things, that are so trivial for grown-ups, that they don’t even take notice of them.”

Uit: Der weisse Neger Wumbaba

“Herr Dabesin, Mutter Weinezehr, Wumbaba...
»Morgen früh, wenn Gott will, wirst du wieder geweckt.«

“Aren't you fed up with all that yet? What's the matter, aren't there any other explanations in the world? Let's see you, for once, just say ‘I don't know'!" Michael returned to his bedroom and glanced at the full packet of cigarettes lying next to the reading lamp on the small night table. He had not smoked the whole day. The first week of his vacation he had spent counting and rationing. Each day he had smoked two fewer cigarettes than the day before. Later, when he understood that he would need twenty days in order to quit smoking entirely while he had at his disposal only one last week to make his abstinence a fait accompli, he had stopped smoking all at once. Five days had passed since his last cigarette. Perhaps that was why he was unable to fall asleep. And now the overturned bucket had jolted him into wakefulness. He would return to his book, that would be best. One thing he could say about this book for sure was that its wonderful collection of characters and historical events managed, occasionally, to divert his attention from smoking.

At the very moment he managed to settle into just the right position and had nearly immersed himself in the book again, the telephone rang.

Every work of art must be the result of overcoming obstacles; the more meaningful its execution is, the harder the obstacles seem to be, as if the creator has been put to the test against the very right that was granted him -- or that he took for himself -- to fulfill his own dream. Sometimes it even seems possible to think of obstacles and difficulties as the motivating force behind such creativity; in defiance, spiteful, as it were, but without which . . . Benny Meyuhas shook himself free of these musings, looking first at the monitor and then at Schreiber, the only cameraman he was willing to work with on this film.”

Uit: Fairy Tale

“You must understand one thing about the Vietnam language. We use tones to make our words. The sound you say is important but just as important is what your voice does, if it goes up or down or stays the same or it curls around or it comes from your throat, very tight. These all change the meaning of the word, sometimes very much, and if you say one tone and I hear a certain word, there is no reason for me to think that you mean some other tone and some other word. It was not until everything is too late and I am in America that I realize something is wrong in what I am hearing that day. Even after this man is gone and I am in New Orleans, I have to sit down and try all different tones to know what he wanted to say to those people in Saigon.

He wanted to say in my language, "May Vietnam live for ten thousand years." What he said, very clear, was, "The sunburnt duck is lying down." Now if I think this man says that Vietnam should live for ten thousand years, I think he is a certain kind of man. But when he says that a sunburnt duck is lying down—boom, my heart melts. We have many tales in Vietnam, some about ducks. I never hear this tale that he is telling us about, but it sounds like it is very good. I should ask him that night what this tale is, but we make love and we talk about me going to America and I think I understand anyway. The duck is not burned up, destroyed. He is only sunburnt. Vietnam women don't like the sun. It makes their skin dark, like the peasants. I understand.”

‘Uncle…’ she said now, a little uncertainly, “I merely wished to say that we could work together for unity instead of partition.’

‘Where the hell is unity? The anti-Muslim Arya Samaj of Punjab and the Hindu militancy of Maharashtra and Bengal… are they symbols of peace and goodwill? Don’t forget that these movements were started before we thought of setting up a separate political platform.’

‘I don’t know about other provinces, but in Bengal Hindus and Muslims share a common culture.’

‘Did your community ever admit the fact that the folk music and folk literature of Bengal are largely the contribution of the Muslims? By ‘Bengali culture’ you only mean Hindu culture. During the last century your press even started the language controversy. They said Bengali was not the language of the Muslims, they declared that Bengali literature and culture were exclusively the heritage of the Hindus…By God, Deepali, we wanted unity. But now, such hatred for us! Such contempt. Like the Christians have for the Jews in Europe….

…. ‘But. Uncle,’ she cut in impatiently, ‘both communities started their revivalist movements and were encouraged by the…’

‘British! I agree. Well why did we let ourselves be manipulated by them?’ He collected his papers and carried them to the writing table”.

Dien afscheyt, waer toe hun den Engel had bewogen,

Ten offer van dat Kind, in 's Heerens woonst gesien;

Gy stelt vergeefs in 't werk soo veel doortrapte stucken,

Hoe loos, hoe snood sy zyn, Godt sal se doen mislucken.

in Tiefen ohne Grund,

in Dunkelheit und ew’ges Schweigen.

Tod ist wohl mehr ein Steigen

aus dem begrenzten Rund

des menschlichen Begreifens,

aus unseren und allen

Fährnissen der Zeit.

Tod ist auch Ende nicht,

Beginnen nur des letzten Reifens,

das unser Sein in sich vollendet

und selbst den schmerzlichsten Verzicht

zur endlichen Erfüllung wendet.

Tod ist nicht Traum

und nicht Versinken

in Welten ohne Licht

und unsrer Ängste düstres Grau.

Tod ist nur durstendes Erkenntnis-Trinken

und Schweben über Zeit und Raum

in weiter ungetrübter Sicht

und tiefer inn’rer Schau.

Uit: Die Tragödie des Menschen

„DER HERR.
Dir ziemt nur Huldigung und nicht Kritik.
LUCIFER.
Sattsam lobhudelt dies Gelichter dich.
Die können sich den Aufwand auch gestatten;
LUCIFER.
Dasselbe könnt' ich fragen auch von dir.
DER HERR.
Seit Urbeginn der Zeiten ward geplant
Und lebt' in mir, was nun geworden ist.
LUCIFER.
Empfandst du nicht die schauerliche Leere,
Die alles Werden hat gehemmt so lang,
Und immer hemmend dich zu schaffen zwang?
War dieses Hindernis nicht Lucifer,
Der Geist, der stets verneint von altersher?
Hast mich besiegt, denn mein Geschick gebeut
Im Staube niedrig, ein verpönter Wicht;
