"I want a body just like that," Chris tells me, gesturing to a six-foot-two blond man with a lean, chiseled body. We're standing on a staircase overlooking the main floor at Equinox, the downtown Manhattan gym to which we both belong. Like several other chic New York gyms, Equinox is a workout spa for, among others, countless top fashion models and soap opera stars and well-groomed gay men of every occupation. Chris, who works at an exclusive uptown hair and makeup salon, laments the fact that the gym is filled with "beautiful people" in whose presence he says he feels less than attractive—even though no one has put a gun to his head to join this gym.
"My whole life is like—well, I'm surrounded by the top five percent in the world," he observes, referring to society's hierarchy of physical beauty. "It's really intimidating a lot of the time. I mean, I work all day at the salon, doing the hair of models and actors, and then I come here at the end of the day, and it's the same thing."
Chris will never have the body of the blond man he pointed out because that man is over six feet tall and lanky, and Chris is five foot seven with a thicker, sturdier build. But, at thirty years old, Chris is quite handsome in his own right and has a muscular, tight body, attractive enough to get his share of stares in this attitude-driven place. Chris has just come off of a relationship with a personal trainer who is drop-dead gorgeous. Yet Chris feels inadequate when it comes to his looks. He wants more, he says.
Over espresso at a nearby caf‚, Chris spells it out more clearly: "I want to be physicalperfection in the eyes of gay men—totally physically appealing, like the ultimate. The perfect tits and butt, bulbous biceps. I want to achieve symmetry, big and in proportion. I would look like the cover of an HX [Homo Xtra, a New York bar giveaway known for its covers of hot men]—lean, sculpted, muscular, virile, a stallion, a guy that would make your mouth water. I want to know what it's like to walk down the street and have everyone look at you, absolutely everyone. I want to know what it's like to really feel like an object."
What does he believe all of this will do for him?
"Honestly, and I'm embarrassed to say it, but I'm hoping it will boost my self-esteem," he admits. "I don't know how to boost my self-esteem now. My feeling is, 'Get a great body and people will admire you. Get a great body and everything will be okay.' There's that voice inside me that of course says that all of that is full of shit. But it's not powerful enough to overcome this magnetic pull, the promise of what the perfect body might bring. It's this belief that if I can just get the perfect body, then I wouldn't be insecure. I would feel more confident. I wouldn't be afraid of certain gay environments."

Chinesischer Morgen

“At once, it was clear Ephraim and Jonathan had made a mistake. And terribly, irreversibly so-there was no way to angle the buggy around with a full lane of steadily oncoming traffic. Their own lane, devoid of an adequate shoulder, was backed up for three hundred yards from the Sprawl Mart-a ten-acre superstore complex-ahead.
An oncoming tour bus gradually slowed to a crawl on approaching Jonathan's buggy. Ephraim looked up to see walleyed Redcoats staring down on them. One of them slammed his head to the tinted window in mute incapacitation. The driver's voice came over the intercom: "Don't worry folks, these people are guaranteed nonviolent. Just try to remember: The camera steals their souls. So, if you must, try and shoot on the sly."
Flashbulbs exploded. Ephraim winced. He singled out one of the cameras and pointed. The Redcoat blinked, apparently startled. Ephraim threw him a middle finger and whirled on Jonathan, agitated, motioning: "Where's the stereo?" Jonathan glanced over one of his shoulders, into the boot. Ephraim followed his gesture and, presently, pulled up the battery-powered player. Then he inserted Reign in Blood.
Jonathan reached for the stereo, desperately trying to silence the roar.
But Ephraim, inwhite-knuckled rapture, blocked his attempt with a sweep of one leg and then went on, much to the shock of surrounding motorists (if equally geared to the protesters' cheering) to tighten the reigns, angle the buggy out into the oncoming lane, and charge.“

« La chambre de Madame. Meubles Louis XV.

Onbekommerd
Onbekommerd toont Amsterdam
haar rotte gebit, haar aan aardgas
stervende bomen, haar onrein water
waarin de zon zich weerkaatst.
Uit ontelbare vervuilde neusgaten
blaast ze kwaadsappige dampen
over haar daken vol televisie-antennes
en duiven, waarboven de hemel
licht wordt en weer donker, sterren
balanceren een paar minuten op de spits
van een kerktoren, carillons
mengen hun valse stemmen in
de oorverdovende musique concrète
van auto's, ambulances, pneumatische
boren, sloophamers, hei-installaties
en overal kruipen mensen in en uit
de schulp van hun huis, hun krot,
hun dierbare, gehate puinhoop.
Neem mij tot je
Neem mij tot je
als brood. Drink mij,
adem mij in.
De binnenkant van je huid
zal ik kussen, je gebeente
verwarmen. Je hart
dat als een getergde vogel
tegen de kooi van je ribben slaat,
zal ik liefkozen zachter dan
het licht de toppen der bomen.
Om alles wat mij
niet langer lief kan zijn.
smeek ik je: lijf mij in.
Buiten jou kan ik niet leven.
