We ijlden koortsige nachten weg,
dronken de roes tot braaksel,
dobberden in het neon van de stad.
Dagen helder als vloeibaar ijs
met koudvuur van het vaste weten
dat zwart zo diep moet zijn.

Ik ben gegaan, zij is gebleven.
Iedere nacht hoor ik haar stem.
Laat me slapen, voor altijd slapen.
Nooit zul je me meer zien.
Schepen vertrekken naar daar
waar de zee.

Nu staar ik uit het raam, gestaag
valt miezerregen.
Roodborstje wat ben je mooi!
Hoor het lied der zilvermeeuwen
over lang verlaten havens.

Begraafplaats Wierum

Vogel schreeuwt
tegen de lucht.
Zo brons kan dood zijn.

De schelpen zijn een weg
naar Santiago de Compostela
hier in Wierum.
Onwennig liggen zij op
dit eiland zonder branding,
zonder zon. De gloedgele bol
is een roestrood hek, tralies
om het leven.
Mijn liefste!
Mijn medepelgrim van de Weg.

Bewonder mijn vleugels.
Zwever.

Uit: Zero

“Milgrim woke, took his medication, showered, shaved, brushed his teeth, dressed, and left the Neo charging but turned on. The U.K. plug-adaptor was larger than the phone’s charger. Keeping the dressmaker’s dummy out of his field of vision, he left the room.

In the silent Japanese elevator, descending three floors, he considered pausing to Google Hollis Henry on the lobby MacBook, but someone was using it when he got there.

He wasn’t always entirely comfortable with the lobby here, what there was of it. He felt like he might look as though he were here to steal something, though aside from his wrinkled post-flight clothing he was fairly certain he didn’t. And really, he thought, stepping out into Monmouth Street and tentative sunlight, he wouldn’t. Had no reason to. Three hundred pounds in a plain manila envelope in the inside pocket of his jacket, and nothing, today, telling him what he needed to do with it. Still a novel situation, to a man of his history.

Addictions, he thought, turning right, toward Seven Dials’ namesake obelisk, started out like magical pets, pocket monsters. They did extraordinary tricks, showed you things you hadn’t seen, were fun. But came, through some gradual dire alchemy, to make decisions for you. Eventually, they were making your most crucial life-decisions. And they were, his therapist in Basel had said, less intelligent than goldfish.

He went to Caffè Nero, a tastier alternate-reality Starbucks, crowded now. He ordered a latte and a croissant, the latter shipped frozen from France, baked here. He approved of that. Saw a small round table being vacated by a woman in a pinstriped suit and swiftly occupied it, looking out at the Vidal Sassoon, across the little roundabout, where young hairdressers were going in to work.”

Uit:

„One fine day, Grummer, without forewarning Alagazy, grabbed the wheelbarrow and set off alone in search of rags and knucklebones, but upon return, bumping into some poetry remains, postured illness and, under the dark of the bed sheets, swallowed them up surreptitiously... Algazy, catching on, slips in there after Grummer with the earnest intent to administer his crony no more than a light scolding, but to his horror detects in Grummer's gut that all that was still any good in literature had been consumed and digested.

Deprived thus of any forthcoming prime nourishment, Algazy, in lieu of redress, gobbled up, while Grummer slumbered, the bulk of his bubble...

The next morn, Grummer, forlorn, — abandoned to the world without bubble — impales the old timer with his beak and soon after sunset rushes him furiously to the top of a tall mountain... There a colossal battle flares between them, persisting through the gloom of night, until, before the break of dawn, Grummer, overpowered, makes motion to restitute the whole of the gobbled literature.“

Uit: Hangover Square

„It was, actually, only in the few moments following the sudden transition-the breaking down of the sound track, the change from the talkie to the silent film-that he now ever thought about, or indeed was conscious of-this extraordinary change which took place in his mind. Soon enough he was watching the silent film-the silent film without music-as though there had never been any talkie-as though what he saw had always been like this.

A silent film without music-he could have found no better way of describing the weird world in which he now moved. He looked at passing objects and people, but they had no colour, vivacity, meaning-he was mentally deaf to them. They moved like automatons, without motive, without volition of their own. He could hear what they said, he could understand their words, he could answer them, even; but he did this automatically, without having to think of what they had said or what he was saying in return. Therefore, though they spoke it was as though they had not spoken, as though they had moved their lips but remained silent. They had no valid existence; they were not creatures experiencing pleasure or pain. There was, in fact, no sensation, no pleasure or pain at all in this world: there was only himself-his dreary, numbed, dead self.

There was no sensation, but there was something to be done. Emphatically, most emphatically there was something to be done. So soon as he had recovered from the surprise-but nowadays it was hardly a surprise-of that snap in his head, that break in the sound track, that sudden burst into a new, silent world-so soon as he had recovered from this he was aware that something had to be done. He could not think what it was at first, but this did not worry him. He could never think of it at first, but it would come: if he didn't nag at it, but relaxed mentally, it would come.“

SONGS OF SEVEN

SEVEN TIMES ONE.        EXULTATION.

THERE'S no dew left on the daisies and clover,

There's no rain left in heaven:

I've said my 'seven times' over and over,

Seven times one are seven.

I am old, so old, I can write a letter;

My birthday lessons are done;

The lambs play always, they know no better;

They are only one times one.

O moon! in the night I have seen you sailing

And shining so round and low;

You were bright! ah bright! but your light is failing—

You are nothing now but a bow.

You moon, have you done something wrong in heaven

That God has hidden your face?

I hope if you have you will soon be forgiven,

And shine again in your place.

O velvet bee, you're a dusty fellow,

You've powdered your legs with gold!

O brave marsh marybuds, rich and yellow,

Give me your money to hold!

O columbine, open your folded wrapper,

Where two twin turtle-doves dwell!

O cuckoopint, toll me the purple clapper

That hangs in your clear green bell!

And show me your nest with the young ones in it;

I will not steal them away;

I am old! you may trust me, linnet, linnet—

I am seven times one to-day.

The People's Anthem

When wilt Thou save the people?

O God of mercy! when?

Not kings and lords, but nations!

Not thrones and crowns, but men!

Flowers of Thy heart, O God, are they!

Let them not pass, like weeds, away!

Their heritage a sunless day!

God save the people!

Shall crime bring crime for ever,

Strength aiding still the strong?

Is it Thy will, O Father!

That man shall toil for wrong?

'No!' say Thy mountains; 'No!' Thy skies;

'Man's clouded sun shall brightly rise,

And songs be heard instead of sighs.'

God save the people!

When whilt thou save the people?

O God of mercy! when?

The people, Lord! the people!

Not thrones and crowns, but men!

God save the people! Thine they are;

Thy children, as Thy angels fair;

Save them from bondage and despair!

God save the people!

Uit: The Lost Colony

„ACT I, Scene 1-HISTORIAN: (His amplified voice filling the theatre): In the time of Queen Elizabeth many English men and women, notably among them Sir Walter Raleigh, continued in their dream of founding an English-speaking nation in the new world. In pursuance of that brave intent two explorers, Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe, were sent out in April 1584, to discover a fitting place for a first settlement. Such a place they found on and around Roanoke Island, which they reached in July of the same year and found to be "the goodliest land under the cope of heaven." It was the time of the corn harvest when they arrived, and the friendly Indians were celebrating and giving thanks unto their God.

By 1587 the time draws near for a colony of English men and women to travel to the new world. John Borden speaks in response to a warning by the sea captain that such a voyage would be very dangerous.

ACT I, Scene 5-BORDEN: Friends, I am nothing but a poor farmer. I have no authority except my own voice. And that I'll use for Mistress Dare and Sir Walter. We have set our faces toward that new world, toward a new life for us all. And are we to be stopped here dulled and dead in our tracks by an old woman's tale of danger and hardship? Then go home, go home now, and the ships waiting out there-may rot where they lie. Danger and hardship! Aye, the better for it. So we may test the manhood in us, if we be men, if we be women worth the name. Who is this Simon Fernando that you should listen to him? ...Like his master Philip he fears a colony in Virginia. He wishes us to fail. But there will be no failing, not if the sea and the wilderness and all Spain herself conspire against us.... „
