Warum macht Wasser nass? ...

Uit:The Cashier (Vertaald door Harry Binsse)

„It was still dark. The bed was warm, and the room quiet. Alexandre Chenevert had been awakened by what he thought was a noise, but was really a nagging recollection. One of his overcoat buttons was dangling loose by a single black thread. And then too, it was spring. Spring reminded him of the income tax. “If I should forget to have that button sewn on . . .” he reflected, and then the notion occurred to him that perhaps there wouldn’t be any war, simply because the weapons of today have such terrific killing power.
He did hope, however, that he would remain master of the thoughts about to wander through his mind. In days gone by, when he could still enjoy a good night’s sleep, he had occasionally gotten up at an unusually early hour, but it had been to take a trip into the country, to catch a train, and then once – what seemed a whole lifetime ago – it had been for an expedition to climb Mount Royal in the dawn. His present cruel sleeplessness, despite everything, was linked to former joys. He felt as though he was off on a jaunt, as though he might come back a new man; he even had some feeling of self- importance.
His brain tricked him into the belief that he was refreshed after so brief a rest. “Seeing I can’t get back to sleep,” Alexandre Chenevert cheerfully told himself, “I might as well turn it to good use. . . .” And he began thinking of Marshal Stalin, with his seminary education, of Tito, Yugoslav dictator, and of the brand- new silk umbrella he had mislaid yesterday, most likely on the streetcar. For a very long time he had bought himself only cotton umbrellas, the cheapest ones, the cloth of which wore out in no time. He had believed that in the long run it would be more economical to buy an umbrella which would be serviceable for years. And that was the one he had had to lose.”

Winter solstice

They asked the morello
when it most felt the cold,
to which it replied:
"On the night of the solstice."

They asked the rose
what crushed its root,
and it whispered:
"The day before Adam and Eve."

They asked the wolf
when the winter was at its hardest,
and it said:
"When the sun is born."

At the end of summer

I come across a tortoise
Cold sandy
Darkness

I see the horizon
A spider's thread couch-grass a hair

I hear a thin menacing whistling
Razor dagger knife

Does the tortoise see the horizon?
Does the tortoise hear a menacing whistling?

Sand shifts
Spiders weave
Couch-grass rustles

Hair, knife?

I hear autumn
The tortoise senses the darkness

De la faim et du froid, du sommeil et des nuits;

Uit: The Gamester

„Mrs. Bev. Speak to him, Charlotte; for I cannot.
Char. When I have wiped my eyes.
Jar. I have a little money, madam; it might have been more, but I have loved the poor. All that I have is yours.
Mrs. Bev. No, Jarvis; we have enough yet. I thank you though, and will deserve your goodness.
Jar. But shall I see my master? And will he let me attend him in his distresses? I'll be no expence to him: and 'twill kill me to be refused. Where is he, madam?
Mrs. Bev. Not at home, Jarvis. You shall see him another time.
Char. To-morrow, or the next day. O, Jarvis! what a change is here!
Jar. A change indeed, madam! My old heart akes at it. And yet methinks—But here's somebody coming.
SCENE IV.
Enter Lucy with Stukely.
Lucy. Mr. Stukely, Madam.[Exit.
Stu. Good morning to you, Ladies. Mr. Jarvis, your servant. Where's my friend, madam?
[To Mrs. Beverley.
Mrs. Bev. I should have asked that question of You. Have not you seen him to-day?
Stu. No, madam.
Char. Nor last night?”

Stoppel-veld

De velden liggen stoppelbloot,
geplunderd en geschoren;

kon bergen in haar wanden,

Another Reason Why I Don't Keep A Gun In The House

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
barking, barking, barking,

and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven
had included a part for barking dog.

When the record finally ends he is still barking,
sitting there in the oboe section barking,
his eyes fixed on the conductor who is
entreating him with his baton

while the other musicians listen in respectful
silence to the famous barking dog solo,
that endless coda that first established
Beethoven as an innovative genius.

Sieben Leben

Sieben Leben möcht ich haben:
Eins dem Geiste ganz ergeben,
So dem Zeichen, so der Schrift.
Eins den Wäldern, den Gestirnen
Angelobt, dem großen Schweigen.
Nackt am Meer zu liegen eines,
Jetzt im weißen Schaum der Wellen,
Jetzt im Sand, im Dünengrase.
Eins für Mozart, für die milden,
Für die wilden Spiele eines.
Und für alles Erdenherzleid
Eins ganz, und ich habe -
Sieben Leben möcht ich haben! -
Hab ein einzig Leben nur.

Die Langverstoßne

Synagoge, Straßburger Münster, Seitenportal
Im Abendschatten hört erschrockne Seele,
Dies Bild betrachtend, ein geheimes Lied:
Die Langverstoßne ist die Sehrgeliebte,
Die Blickverhüllte, siehe, die Betrübte:
Sie wartet und sie weiß. Sie ist's, die sieht.

Uit: We Were a Handful (Vertaald door Mark Corner)

“The palace was a real hive of activity and everyone was dashing hither and thither. The hustle and bustle was biggest in the kitchen because this was where they were preparing the wedding feast. There were loads of monkeys there and they all had their hands full and were being rushed off their legs. There were other animals there too, all of them at work doing something. There was an elephant turning the mincer to make rissoles, and another elephant had a coffee mill between its legs and was grinding coffee with its trunk. Plucking poultry was the job of one small monkey while another was washing the vegetables and a third peeling the potatoes. A huge snake called an Indian rock python was kneading dough for apple strudel and a couple of parrots were sorting peas. A ginger tom who looked like our Honza was whisking egg-white and never even took a nibble for himself on the sly. I found this odd because Honza would wolf down everything and the Pa would hurl a shoe after him because of the way he goes for everything he can lay his paws on. There was a bear chopping wood, a dog stirring thickener into the soup and it looked as if the whole place was there for one thing only – work.”

Uit: The Cruel Sea

“They were returning to Liverpool with convoy BK.108 consisting of thirty-eight ships. The Bar Light Vessel was some nine miles ahead and VIPEROUS had instructed COMPASS ROSE to move to the head of the convoy to lead it in. The convoy was forming into single line, ready for the narrow passage up the sea channels, and COMPASS ROSE had at least six miles to make up before she was on station at the head of the column. COMPASS ROSE could not rival VIPEROUS's swift get-away, but she did her best: the hull throbbed as the revolutions crept upwards, and presently they were passing ship after ship to their way to the front of the convoy. Lockhart noticed, without paying much attention to it, that the sun had gone in and that it turned suddenly colder, but he was not prepared for what happened after. They were just drawing level with the fourth ship in the convoy, and he had sighted the Bar Light Vessel about two miles ahead of them when it disappeared; and as he stared round him, unwilling to believe that visibility could have deteriorated so swiftly, the convoy disappeared also, sponged out like chalk from a slate. It was fog, fog coming down from the north, fog blowing across their path as thick as a blanket and blotting out everything on the instant.

Lockhart leaned over the front of the bridge, momentarily appalled, The fog enveloped them in great wafts of vapour, cold and acrid; he could see the tip of their gun barrel, twenty feet in front of him, and nothing more at all - no sea, no ships, not even COMPASS ROSE's own stem.”
