Uit: Smilla's Sense of Snow (Vertaald door Tina Nunnally)
“It's freezing--an extraordinary 0° Fahrenheit--and it's snowing, and in the language that is no longer mine, the snow is qanik--big, almost weightless crystals falling in clumps and covering the ground with a layer of pulverized white frost.
December darkness rises up from the grave, seeming as limitless as the sky above us. In this darkness our faces are merely pale, shining orbs, but even so I can sense the disapproval of the pastor and the verger directed at my black net stockings and at Juliane's whimpering, made worse by the fact that she took disulfiram this morning and is now confronting her grief almost sober. They think that she and I have no respect for either the weather or the tragic circumstances. But the truth is that both the stockings and the pills are each in their own way a tribute to the cold and to Isaiah.
The pastor and the verger and the women surrounding Juliane are all Greenlanders, and when we sing "Guutiga, illimi," "Thou, My Lord," and when Juliane's legs buckle under her and she starts to sob, the volume slowly increasing, and when the pastor speaks in West Greenlandic, taking his point of departure in the Moravians' favorite passage from Ephesians about redemption through His blood, then with only a tiny lapse of concentration you might feel yourself transported to Upernavik or Holsteinsborg or Qaanaaq in Greenland.“

The lamp
Before the lamp was lit
we sat completely still
A crow’s rasping voice
and a sudden scent of clover
with a sweetish warmth
through this rising dark.
Water, completely still.
The earth, it too tranquil.
The bird flew
as close as it could
over its own shadow
And the bumblebee, faithful
friend of many summers,
crashed against the window pane
as if it were the wall of the world
And the dive dapper
flew from lake to lake
It could be late
or early
in various lives in various lives
it could be in a butterfly’s shadow
In the shadow of any life.

Uit: How Angel Peterson Got His Name
„He is as old as me and that means he has had a life, has raised children and made a career and succeeded and maybe failed a few times and can look back on things, on old memories.
Carl Peterson--that's the name his mother and father gave him, but from the age of thirteen and for the rest of his life not a soul, not his wife or children or any friend has ever known him by that name.
He is always called Angel.
Angel Peterson, and I was there when he got his name.
We lived in northwestern Minnesota, up near the Canadian border and not far from the eastern border of North Dakota. The area is mostly cleared now and almost all farmland, but in the late forties and early fifties it was thickly forested and covered with small lakes and was perhaps the best hunting and fishing country in the world, absolutely crawling with fish and game. My friends and I spent most of our time in the woods, hunting, fishing or just camping, but we lived in town and had town lives as well.
Because the area was so remote, many farms still did not have electricity, nearly none had phones and the rare ones that did were on party lines, with all users on the same line so that anybody could listen in to anybody else (called rubbernecking.) Individual phones were identified by the rings: two longs and a short ring would be one farm, two shorts and a long another farm and so forth. You would call somebody on a separate line by hand cranking a ringer on the side of your phone for the operator--one very long ring--and when she came on (it was always a woman) you would ask her to place your call, as in "Alice, I would like to talk to the Sunveldt farm over by Middle River," and the operator would ring them for you. Anybody on your own party line you would call by simply cranking their ring (my grandmother was a short, a long and a short).”

„DP: Well, The Singing Detective played with autobiographical genre. It pretended to be autobiographical because that’s a very powerful way of writing - one thinks ‘Oh, this must be the truth’. And of course it isn’t - I despise autobiographies - I despise biographies as well: they’re hidden novels. But autobiographies are a complicated series of lies. When H.G. Wells said ‘Who would write novels if they could write autobiography flat out?’ what he was trying to say was . . . Nabokov oddly said the same order of things - he says, ‘Of course it’s not me but if what I was writing was not in some sense true, other than my imagination, it wouldn’t come across as true’. And some people boast, ‘Oh, it’s all out of my head’ etc. etc. but of course everything they’ve experienced and lived through and some of the closest or most emotional things they’ve experienced will sooner or later outcrop in a poem or a novel or a play, if they’re writers. It’s inevitable. But to deliberately choose to use what appears to be like one is in the same order as choosing to use say ‘musical’ genre or ‘the detective story’ genre ... is that genres in themselves, i.e. audience expectations of a certain ritual form of behaviour about ‘the narrative’ is a very powerful, is a very potent weapon in the writer’s hands. So I’m alert to what you mean when you say ‘key’ but it’s just simply not the case. It’s choice of method.
JC: There are quotes. There’s an interview which I’ve found you gave Paul Madden in some B.F.I. document where you talk about all drama being essentially manufacture. ...
DP: Well, all art is - of any kind. By definition.
JC: ... Yes but then you talk about that you make it that much more personal for the audience. It’s a game with the audience, in a sense.
DP: Yeah, but that’s only saying what I’ve just been saying is that I choose the genre to appear to be, to appear to be more self-exposing than it actually is, because in fact - I’m a reclusive character and I don’t expose myself. I appear to.“
