Elk volgens zijn natuur
De zwaluw was weergekomen,
En zat met de mus op de goot,
Zij spraken vertrouwelijk te samen,
Verhaalden hun kommer en nood.
De zwaluw vertelde wat angsten
Zij al had uitgestaan,
Wanneer zij, van de andre gescheiden,
Alleen over zee moest gaan.
En hoe zij steeds hoopte en verlangde,
In gene wilde natuur,

„The style of life-writing that Richardson undertakes to complete in Pilgrimage has presented biographers with an extremely difficult task. The history of Richardson biography has been a complicated one, and since her death in 1957 only two full biographies have been written. The first of these, John Rosenberg''s Dorothy Richardson: The Genius They Forgot, was commissioned by her first publisher, Gerald Duckworth and Sons, to commemorate the centenary of her birth; it was not published until 1973. In the period soon after her death, however, several people planned and then abandoned the project of writing a biography of Richardson. These attempts were orchestrated by Richardson''s sister-in-law, Rose Odle, whom Richardson had asked to be her literary executor. After Richardson''s death in 1957, Odle began collecting material for a biography, having been left some personal papers by Richardson herself. She wrote to those who had known Richardson, requesting copies of letters. She had these typed up, and she brought together Richardson''s writings. Odle did not plan to write the book herself but hoped to attract an eminent biographer to the job. She consequently searched for the right person to utilize the materials. Her first choice was Leon Edel, who had given a study of Pilgrimage a prominent place in his 1955 text, The Psychological Novel: 1900-1950, where he defines Richardson''s series as one of the three texts (with Proust''s Remembrance of Things Past and Joyce''s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) that heralded the birth of the "modern psychological novel." Despite the fact that he and Odle corresponded for some time about the project, Edel did not go on to write Richardson''s biography. Odle next asked Horace Gregory, who had been introduced to Richardson by Bryher in 1934. Like Edel, Gregory corresponded with Odle for some time about the project, and Odle continued to write to Gregory about new material as it came into her possession.“

L’Emigrant
Süßes Katalonien
Heimat meines Herzens
wenn es sich von dir entfernt
stirbt es vor Sehnsucht
Herrliches Tal, Wiege meiner Kindheit,
weiße Pyrenäengipfel,
Raine und Flüsse, Einsiedelei nah dem Himmel,
lebt wohl für immer!
Baumwipfel, Buchfinken und Stieglitze,
singt, singt;
ich rufe den Wäldern und Ufern weinend zu:
Lebt wohl!
Wo werde ich dein heilendes Klima finden,
deinen goldenen Himmel?
Und ach!, wo finde ich deine Gipfel,
wunderschönes Montserrat?
Nirgends werde ich sie sehen, Barcelona,
deine herrliche Kathedrale,
noch deine Hügel, die Juwelen der Krone,
die Gott dir aufgesetzt hat.
Lebt wohl, Brüder; Leb wohl, mein Vater,
ich werde euch nie mehr sehen!
Wenn am Grabe meiner liebevollen Mutter
ich doch auch ein Bett hätte!
Oh Seemänner, der Wind der mich fortträgt,
er lässt mich leiden!
Ich bin, ach, so krank! Bringt mich an Land,
dort möchte ich sterben!

Uit: Legends of the Madonna
„Through all the most beautiful and precious productions of human genius and human skill which the middle ages and the _renaissance_ have bequeathed to us, we trace, more or less developed, more or less apparent, present in shape before us, or suggested through inevitable associations, one prevailing idea: it is that of an impersonation in the feminine character of beneficence, purity, and power, standing between an offended Deity and poor, sinning, suffering humanity, and clothed in the visible form of Mary, the Mother of our Lord.
To the Roman Catholics this idea remains an indisputable religious truth of the highest import. Those of a different creed may think fit to dispose of the whole subject of the Madonna either as a form of
superstition or a form of Art. But merely as a form of Art, we cannot in these days confine ourselves to empty conventional criticism. We are obliged to look further and deeper; and in this department of
Legendary Art, as in the others, we must take the higher ground, perilous though it be. We must seek to comprehend the dominant idea lying behind and beyond the mere representation. For, after all, some consideration is due to facts which we must necessarily accept, whether we deal with antiquarian theology or artistic criticism; namely, that the worship of the Madonna did prevail through all the Christian and civilized world for nearly a thousand years; that, in spite of errors, exaggerations, abuses, this worship did comprehend certain great elemental truths interwoven with our human nature, and to be evolved perhaps with our future destinies.“

Ballen
