Sonnet V

I touch you as a lonely violin touches the suburbs of the faraway place

patiently the river asks for its share of the drizzle

and, bit by bit, a tomorrow passing in poems approaches

so I carry faraway's land and it carries me on travel's road

On a mare made of your virtues, my soul weaves

a natural sky made of your shadows, one chrysalis at a time.

I am the son of what you do in the earth, son of my wounds

that have lit up the pomegranate blossoms in your closed-up gardens

Out of jasmine the night's blood streams white. Your perfume,

my weakness and your secret, follows me like a snakebite. And your hair

is a tent of wind autumn in color. I walk along with speech

to the last of the words a bedouin told a pair of doves

I palpate you as a violin palpates the silk of the faraway time

and around me and you sprouts the grass of an ancient place—anew

My Mother

I yearn for my mother’s bread

My mother’s coffee

My mother’s touch

Childhood grows within me

Day upon daybreak

And I love my life because I

When I die

Am ashamed of my mother’s tears

Take me, if I come back someday

As a cloak for your eyelashes

Cover my bones with grass

An intending from the purity of your bosom

And pull my bonds tight

With a lock of hair

With a thread that trails from the back of your dress

I may become a god

A god I become

Whenever I touch the depths of your heart

Leave me, whenever I return

As fuel to feed your fire

As a clothes-line over the roof of your home

Because I lose suspension

Without your day-prayer

I am old; bring back the stars of childhood

To consult with you

The smallest of sparrows

The road of return

To the nest of your awaiting

Jamaica the Cossak

oh how many tough miracles are out there my stallion my brother

i'd gaze at them until ravens drink up my eyes but still'd want more

on this side is bahama mama on the other the palms of haiti

at night stepping out of the bungalow i see the towers of freetown

and it makes me feel so frustrated that our sharovars have faded

what the hell for, out of which underground faunas

the sea mowers-corsaires betrayed us in the battle

when father wanted to take that blessed place, freetown

there they have thirteen churches and an eternal war with cupid

and also thirteen abysses where silver and gold are hidden

young girls there are like vines growing quietly behing the walls

they're dying to make love but they've been dressed in black

and now i drink moonshine together with dick the pirate

i tell him come to your senses, repent i tell him you bastard

is it really that if you're european you don't have to be a man

why the fuck have you sold yourself for thirty rotten escudos

and dick he's a weird one he strokes a piebald parrot

pats me on the shoulder wrings hands up high

here's a knight errant for you here's all that green stuff

to be or not to be he says and burps i'm sorry

he says i have a slave girl with skin the color of cocoa

buy her oh my grey eagle it's tough without a woman

no need to plant a garden he adds chuckling slyly

a garden grows out of her body with tobacco pineapples melons

you'll make a lot of little cossacks take all of them into your host

however my neck my soul does not yield to a yoke

but i don't even hear him i spit on his miserable entreating

my stallion my unfaithful one my thomas the apolstle

i will go out at sunset

make a flute out of sugar cane

sit down by the ocean

and now i am no more

so verschwenderische Gegend ab.

Our Table

On the way back from the funeral cocks were crowing

Upon the April soil of an empty afternoon.

The sky, like a small morning-glory,

Suddenly faced us. We went into a tavern.

Our table gave little crackling sounds,

The tree remembering it had been alive.

I Love My Sweet Armenia's...

I love my sweet Armenia's word which is filled with the taste of sun,

I love our old lyre's melody from its mournful and weeping strings,

The vivacious fragrance of the blood-like flowers and the roses,

I love as well the graceful and agile dance of Nayirian girls.

I love as well our gloomy sky, our pure waters, luminous lake,

The summer's sun and the winter's sublime wind with a dragon's voice,

Also the black, unwelcoming walls of the huts lost in the dark,

And I love the thousand-year stone of the ancient cities as well.

No matter where I am yet I shall not forget our mournful songs,

Shall not forget our steel-lettered books which now have become prayers,

No matter how sharply they pierce my heart our wounds so soaked with blood,

Even then I love my orphaned and my bloodied, dear Armenia.

For my longing heart there is not, not even one another tale,

There's no brighter forehead than that of Kouchag and Naregatsi,

Pass the whole world, there's no summit as white as that of Ararat,

Like glory road, unreachable, I love as well my Mount Massis.

Strom

Ist viel hoher Raum;

Fische und Wasserratten und Lurche

Ziehn, seine Träume, durch ihn hin. –

herrschte
und Wetter
als sie lachten
und liebten
arbeiteten
stritten
sich versöhnten
als Hunger und Krieg
als Schlagzeilen um sich
griffen
als das Glück begann
als das Flugzeug
der Zug
der Schritt vorüber
als des Vogels Ton
in der Luft
hing
als dein Herz
still
stand

Uit: Jeremy and Hamlet  (Come out of the Kitchen)

„There was a certain window between the kitchen and the pantry that was Hamlet's favourite. Thirty years ago--these chronicles are of the year 1894--the basements of houses in provincial English towns, even of large houses owned by rich people, were dark, chill, odourfull caverns hissing with ill-burning gas and smelling of ill-cooked cabbage. The basement of the Coles' house in Polchester was as bad as any other, but this little window between the kitchen and

the pantry was higher in the wall than the other basement windows, almost on a level with the iron railings beyond it, and offering a view down over Orange Street and, obliquely, sharp to the right and

past the Polchester High School, a glimpse of the Cathedral Towers themselves.

Inside the window was a shelf, and on this shelf Hamlet would sit for hours, his peaked beard interrogatively a-tilt, his leg sticking out from his square body as though it were a joint-leg and worked like the limb of a wooden toy, his eyes, sad and mysterious, staring into Life.. ..

It was not, of course, of Life that he was thinking; only very high- bred and in-bred dogs are conscious philosophers. His ears were stretched for a sound of the movements of Mrs. Hounslow the cook, his nostrils distended for a whiff of the food that she was manipulating, but his eyes were fixed upon the passing show, the pageantry, the rough-and-tumble of the world, and every once and again the twitch of his Christmas-tree tail would show that something was occurring in this life beyond the window that could supervene, for a moment at any rate, over the lust of the stomach and the lure of the clattering pan.“

Uit: 1900

Mutter

Alles, was schön ist, alles, was heilig,
Nennet das Wort dir:
Eine Mutter!
Alles, was Liebe, alles, was Güte,
Das ist ein Hort mir:
Meine Mutter!

Bist du vereinsamt, weit in der Ferne,
Denk nur an jene, die dich geboren,
So wird's dir Trost sein; all deine Leiden
Nimmt sie hinfort dir:
Deine Mutter!

Den nur beklag ich, der nie genossen
Mütterlich Lieben, mütterlich Walten.
Alles, was Leid heißt, trostlos Entbehren,
Klingt in dem Wort dir:
Keine Mutter!

So sprecht Ihr voller Würde
Und heischt von mir Bewunderung
Ob Eurer Altersbürde:
Doch sollt’ vor jedem grauen Haar
Ich erfurchtsvoll erbangen,
So dürft’ am End der Esel gar
Respekt von mir verlangen.
