Uit: Baltasar and Blimunda (Vertaald door Giovanni Pontiero)

“They were not afraid, they were simply astounded at their own daring. The priest laughed and shouted. He had already abandoned the safety of the handrail and was running back and forth across the deck of the machine in order to catch a glimpse of the land below, north, south, east, and west, the earth looked so vast, now that they were so far away from it, Baltasar and Blimunda finally scrambled to their feet, nervously holding on to the cords, then to the handrail, dazed by the light and the wind, suddenly no longer frightened, Ah, and Baltasar shouted, We've done it, he embraced Blimunda and burst into tears, he was like a lost child, this soldier who had been to war, who had killed a man in Pegões with his spike, and was now weeping for joy as he clung to Blimunda, who kissed his dirty face. The priest came up to them and joined in their embrace, suddenly perturbed by the analogy the Italian had drawn when he had suggested that the priest himself was God, Baltasar his son, and Blimunda the holy ghost, and now all three of them were up there in the skies together, There is only one God, he shouted, but the wind snatched the words from his mouth. Then Blimunda said, Unless we open the sail, we shall go on climbing, and we might even collide with the sun.”
We never ask ourselves whether there might not be some wisdom in madness, even while recognising that we are all a little mad. These are ways of keeping firmly on this side of madness, and just imagine, what would happen if madmen demanded to be treated as if they were equals with the sane, who are only a little mad, on the pretext that they themselves still possess a little wisdom, so as to safeguard, for example, their own existence like Padre Bartolomeu Lourenço, If we were to open the sail abruptly, we should fall to the ground like a stone, and it is he who is manoeuvring the rope and adjusting the slack so that the sail opens gradually, casting its shadow on the balls of amber and causing the machine to slow down, who would ever have thought that it would be so easy to fly, now we can go in search of new Indies.”

Lines for painting on grains of rice

For Rebecca

You are the kind of  person who buys exotic fruits

leaves them out on the counter until they rot

You always mean to eat them       sometimes you rearrange them

rousing over the bowl a cloud of tiny flies

                                            &

How do they balance       the parrot who chews a walnut

sideways       holding it up in his right foot

the owl perched on a just-lit lamppost

scratching behind its ear       like a big dog

                                            &

Your pencil eraser wears down long before the point

for every word you write       you rub out two

                                            &

Where the slice of  toast rested       the plate is still warm

a film of fog       little points of dew

                                            &

Love is like velocity       we feel the speeding up

and the slowing down       otherwise not at all

the more steady       the more it feels like going nowhere

my love I want to go nowhere with you

                                            &

I cannot bring myself  to toss the cup of cold coffee

you set down by the door on your way to the taxi

all day I have sipped it       each time forgetting

your two tablets of fake sugar       too sweet

                                            &

Running down the street

dodging between raindrops plump as cherries

                                            &

The ground was feathered with wild strawberries

I picked seven       as many as I could bear

I ate two       I saved the rest for you       here

hold out your hand       take them       taste how sweet

                                            &

Please hold me the forgotten way       the wall pleads

spray-paint face and voice of a damned poet

the darling damned poets       save them from themselves

maybe it is us they need saving from

“I love London. I love everything about it. I love its palaces and its museums and its galleries, sure. But also, I love its filth, and damp, and stink. Okay, well, I don’t mean love, exactly. But I don’t mind it. Not any more. Not now I’m used to it. You don’t mind anything once you’re used to it. Not the graffiti you find on your door the week after you painted over it, or the chicken bones and cider cans you have to move before you can sit down for your damp and muddy picnic. Not the everchanging fast food joints – AbraKebabra to Pizza the Action to Really Fried Chicken – and all on a high street that despite its three new names a week never seems to look any different. Its tawdriness can be comforting, its wilfulness inspiring. It’s the London I see every day. I mean, tourists: they see the Dorchester. They see Harrods, and they see men in bearskins and Carnaby Street. They very rarely see the Happy Shopper on the Mile End Road, or a drab Peckham disco. They head for Buckingham Palace, and see waving above it the red, white and blue, while the rest of us order dansak from the Tandoori Palace, and see Simply Red, White Lightning, and Duncan from Blue. But we should be proud of that, too. Or, at least, get used to it.”

1966

absentminded
our thoughtless days
sat at dire controls
and played indolently
slowly downward in remote
subterranean shaft
a diamond-tipped
drill point crept closer
to residual chaos to
rare artesian hatred
that once squirted warm
blood in God's face
confirming His first
disappointment in Eden

The First Shot

That lone rifle-shot anonymous
in the dark striding chest-high
through a nervous suburb at the break
of our season of thunders will yet
steep its flight and lodge
more firmly than the greater noises
ahead in the forehead of memory.

Straßenbahngedicht

Als ich von dir kam,
schrieb ich dies Gedicht auf.
Von meiner Fahrt in der Straßenbahn,
wo ich neben einem Mädchen stand
in einem Lodenmantel,
das warm roch und nach Liebe.
Sie sah müde aus, genau wie ich.
Zufrieden sahen wir unser Bild
in den spiegelnden Scheiben,
während wir von Station zu Station
fuhren. Die Straßenbahn wurde immer leerer,
aber wir
blieben dicht beieinander stehen.

Uit: Ship Fever and Other Stories (The Investigators)

“Early that June, Constantine Boyd left Detroit with his usual trunk but got on a train headed east instead of west. For the past three summers he’d worked at his uncle’s farm in western Michigan, but now, just as he was becoming truly useful, his family had made other plans. Because a different uncle had requested the loan of him, he was being shipped elsewhere: like a harrow, or a horse.

He was twelve that summer of 1908, and he sulked all the way to Toledo, napped between Toledo and Cleveland, woke angry with his absent mother but then forgave her in Erie, when he found the cookies she’d slipped in beside the sandwiches. In Buffalo he passed a bank that looked like a castle, horses plodding along the canal, and a gigantic electric hoist moving grain from a ship into an empty boxcar. At the station where he switched for the train to Bath, he saw a motorized bicycle, one of the very sights his mother had promised, being chased by a terrier, and with that his bad mood slipped away. He was going someplace near water, he remembered. With new people, new things to see and do, away from the steaming city and his father.

In Bath, one of those new people carried Constantine’s trunk to a dusty automobile. “It was made up the road in Syracuse,” his mother’s younger brother said, running his knobby hand over the hood. “I know the engine’s inventor.”

 Uit: Papillon

“Bonne chance, Francés ! Vous êtes libres dès ce moment. Adios !"

The Farmer in Wet Weather

Goddess of drizzle,

driving your big

cartloads of mist

across my fields!

Send me some sun

and I'll sacrifice

my cow — my wife —

my Christianity!

A Toast to Iceland

Our land of lakes forever fair

below blue mountain summits,

of swans, of salmon leaping where

the silver water plummets,

of glaciers swelling broad and bare

above earth's fiery sinews —

the Lord pour out his largess there

as long as earth continues!

The Style of the Times

(Composed while riding down below Fróðá)

Here, over heathland pathways

harried by dismal blizzards,

the girded hero hurried

to hug his brocaded lady.

That peerless age has perished.

No prickstaff-shoving lover

crosses these modern meadows

to meet his tucked-up sweetheart.
