Am Feste Mariä Lichtmeß

Durch die Gassen geht Maria,
In dem Arm den Sohn, den lieben,
Hält ihn fest und hält ihn linde,
Und ihr Auge schaut auf ihn.
Wie die Englein ihn gesungen,
Ihn die Hirten angebetet,
Huldigten die grauen Weisen,
Läßt sie still vorüber ziehn.

Aber Joseph ihr zur Seiten
Ist in Sorgfalt ganz befangen;
Prüfend frägt er alle Steine,
Ob ihr Fuß zu kühn sich wagt;
Weiß nicht, was er wird erleben,
Aber wunderbare Dinge
Haben aus des Kindleins Augen
Sich ihm heimlich angesagt.

O Maria, Mutter Christi!
Soll ich denn zu dir mich wagen
Mit dem schuldgepreßten Herzen,
Mit dem trüben Sünderblick! -
Die du hast gleich mir gewandelt,
Hast gesiegt, wo ich gesunken,
Weh, vor deiner lichten Krone
Bebt mein scheues Fleh'n zurück.

Doch du neigst dein liebes Kindlein
Und es reicht die linden Hände.
O mein lieber Herr und Richter
Bist du mein Erlöser nur?
Ach, wie hab' ich mich gefürchtet,
Und nun bist du lauter Liebe!
Alle harten Worte schweigen
Und dahin ist ihre Spur.

Liebster Herr, du hast geschaffen
Meine arme kranke Seele,
Wie den Reiz, den vielgestalten,
Der auf breite Straßen führt;
Und du weißt, daß wie vor Andern
Frischer Hauch in meiner Seele,
So mich auch vor Andern glühend
Jede Erdenlust berührt.

Hast du mir in Macht und Güte
Meine Seele rein gegeben,
Herrlich, groß und wohlgerüstet
Wie ein königliches Schloß:
Und nun liegt es in Zerstörung,
Graunvoll in der öden Größe,
Wie ein knöchern Ungeheuer,
Wie ein todter Meerkoloß.

Und da ich nach vielen Tagen,
Sonder Glauben, voll der Liebe,
Angstvoll prüfte seine Mauern,
Siehe da! sie standen fest.
O mein Herr, willst du mich hören,
Auftun deine Gnadenschätze:
Sieh', ich will getreulich bauen
Meines Lebens trüben Rest!

Muß mein Haus gleich stehen eine
Öde warnende Ruine:
Ach, nur dort kann sich gestalten,
Was so rettungslos zerstört.
Kann ich nur ein Stüblein bauen,
Ausgeschmückt mit stillen Werken,
Wo ich, Herr, dich kann bewirten,
Wenn ich bei dir eingekehrt!

Aus den Hallen tritt Maria,
In dem Arm den Sohn, den lieben,
Hält ihn fest und hält ihn linde,
Und auf dem ihr Auge ruht.
O, sie hat das Glück getragen
Durch neun wonnevolle Monde;
Was verkündet jene Frommen,

Bonjour tristesse
(some hours after Sagan)

Between this city's legs a young woman weeps,
yesterday's worries staining her uniform,
on her face the green of the white registers
and the sadness recycled in the office.
A young man wears a laugh and a black blasphemy,
the sleepless night engraved upon his tie:
he recalls how often he almost slipped
on the uncertain words lounging against the pavements.
For what he'd heard was right, this city of faceless looks
and white staircases had never come into its own.
In the morning she hurries by without a nod,
at night there's not a soul with whom to talk. . .

This morning I rubbed my eyes, wiped off the jam
and thought of you. Offering me the first one
of the day, and that forced smile.

It's the boss. She wouldn't give in to him last night.
Good morning.

The Shadowed Road

Our shadows moved before us on the road.
The trees that watched us brooded dark and still,
Streaked by the frost with phosphorescent gray.
Chill followed sharply on a gorgeous day
Of winds, blown leaves, red bonfires. Faintly showed
The mist-ringed moon above the pasture hill.

Our shadows moved before us. By our side
New mystery, throbbing through the rhythm of life
Echoed our footsteps; and its presence grew
So real to me, I felt its power endue
An archangelic shape, whose phantom stride
Rhymed with our own who walked as man and wife.

Light fell upon us from the glimmering moon,
And light upon his face whose name is Love.
Ah, the rapt eyes, the tender, quickening gaze,
The splendor on that wild immortal face!
Then hurrying cloud possessed the heavens, and soon
I saw his shadow darken from above.

Beyond our own it stretched along the way,
The darkness of Death's cowl, more deep than night.
Gulfing our own, it blotted out the road,
The shadow of Love that brightest dreams forebode.
Yet, in my soul I found a thing to say:
"Though darkness go before, we walk in light.

"This is Love's answer!" For Death's night must move
Onward before two hearts that cast out fear,
Joined by the closest of immortal bonds.
They shall speak truth when prayer to prayer responds,
"Death but precedes us as the shadow of Love.
Light falls about us from a surer sphere!"

Probleem

Zelfs 's nachts.
En ook drinken.

Uit: The Gypsy Madonna

“The haunted face of a man old beyond his years stared grimly back at me. I shook off my grief and walked inside, brushing the snow from my shoulders. Stanley wasn't in yet, nor was Esther who answered the shop telephone and cleaned the place. With leaden feet I climbed the stairs. The building was dim and smelled of old wood and furniture polish. I opened the door to my office and stepped inside. There, sitting quietly on a chair, was a tramp.
I nearly jumped out of my skin. Angrily, I demanded to know what he was doing there and how he had got in. The window was closed and the front door had been locked. For an instant I was afraid. Then he turned to me, his mouth curling into a half smile. I was at once struck by the extraordinary color of his eyes that shone out from his cracked and bearded face, like aquamarine set in rock. I had a sudden sense of déjà vu but it was gone as quickly as it had come. He wore a felt hat and sat hunched in a heavy coat. I noticed his shoes were dirty and scuffed with a hole wearing through at one toe. He looked me up and down appraisingly and I felt my fury mount at his impertinence.
"You've grown into a fine young man," he mused, nodding appreciatively. I frowned at him, not knowing how to respond. "You don't know who I am?" he asked and, behind his smile, I noticed a shadow of sorrow.
"Of course I don't. I think you should leave," I replied.
He nodded and shrugged. "Hell, there's no reason why you should remember. I hoped ... Well, what does it matter? Do you mind if I have a smoke? It's mighty cold out there." His accent was southern and there was something about it that caused my skin to goose-bump.“

Falling (Fragment)

A 29-year-old stewardess fell ... to her death tonight when she was swept through an emergency door that suddenly sprang open ... The body ... was found ... three hours after the accident.
—New York Times

The states when they black out and lie there rolling when they turn
To something transcontinental move by drawing moonlight out of the great
One-sided stone hung off the starboard wingtip some sleeper next to
An engine is groaning for coffee and there is faintly coming in
Somewhere the vast beast-whistle of space. In the galley with its racks
Of trays she rummages for a blanket and moves in her slim tailored
Uniform to pin it over the cry at the top of the door. As though she blew

The door down with a silent blast from her lungs frozen she is black
Out finding herself with the plane nowhere and her body taking by the throat
The undying cry of the void falling living beginning to be something
That no one has ever been and lived through screaming without enough air
Still neat lipsticked stockinged girdled by regulation her hat
Still on her arms and legs in no world and yet spaced also strangely
With utter placid rightness on thin air taking her time she holds it
In many places and now, still thousands of feet from her death she seems
To slow she develops interest she turns in her maneuverable body

Here Comes Autumn

The grieving willows droop in deep mourning,
Their sad hair streaming like teardrops falling.
Here comes autumn, here comes the autumn cold
In its faded mantle woven with leaves of gold.

Various blossoms have fallen off their branch
Amidst a garden where the red mingles with blue.
The trembling breath of breeze shakes the leaves and
A few shriveled limbs like fragile bones in somber hue.

At times the moon appears with all her puzzled look.
And on the far side mountains start to veil with fog.
I hear the bitter cold stirring the wind,
But see no boats making their cross-stream run.

High in the cloudy sky the birds flee on
While the leaden air broods o'er the parting.
A few sad girls against the door lean in silence
Looking pensively into the distance.

Maria

Unter allen Schmerzen,
Die mir zugetheilt,
Wühlet mir im wunden Herzen
Einer, der nicht heilt,
Den ich stets erneue –
Ach, unsäglich ist der Schmerz der Reue!

Reue, daß ich Einen
Von mir lassen hieß,
Heiße, bittre Thränen weinen
Einen weinen ließ;
Den ich treulos nannte,
Einzig liebte, liebt und ganz verkannte.

Könnt ich rufen, weinen
Ihn, ach ihn zurück,
Ohne Thränen ließ ich keinen,
Keinen Augenblick!
Doch in welchen Stunden
Habt ihr klaren Auges mich gefunden?

Trügen Thränenfluthen
Mich zur ewgen Ruh!
Dem willkommnen Tode bluten
Meine Wunden zu.
Im gebrochnen Herzen
Heilen alle unheilbaren Schmerzen.

Uit: The Ship On The Mountain (Vertaald door Shant Norashkharian)

"Why not?...That was not such a bad thing..."
"No. It was very good. What was bad, came later when they invited you to the roulette room, for charity. Then, naturally, you were intimidated and accepted their offer, you lost your last pennies, and with a cold face, feeling guilty for not having any more to spend, somehow you came out and fled."
"That is what it was all about..."
"Tbilisi now has this kind of lifestyle. Nightclubs, beautiful Russian princesses, famous artists. It is surprising how profiteering the high nobility has become with respect to art...They invite you one evening, to a place where one of the renowned poets will read his latest writings. Full crowd. In the center of the hall there is a small stage. Roaring applause. The poet comes on stage. Dressed in a long and strange shirt sewn from the silk of Bukhara, the edge of his nose painted, his face tattooed like a gypsy, he starts to recite like a third-rate actor, with a distant and vague voice, singular and unintelligible words. The ladies sigh and start applauding. They surround the poet, shake his hands and kiss them. Then, unavoidably, they invite you over to the other room, where, by chance, you rediscover the familiar roulette, and the delicate ladies who eat you with their eyes..."

Uit: The Fountainhead

“I do not blame Peter Keating. He was helpless. He had a contract with his employers. It was ignored. He had a promise that the structure he offered would be built as designed. The promise was broken. The love of a man for the integrity of his work and his right to preserve it are now considered a vague intangible and an inessential. You have heard the prosecutor say that. Why was the building disfigured? For no reason. Such acts never have any reason, unless it’s the vanity of some second-handers who feel they have a right to anyone’s property, spiritual or material. Who permitted them to do it? No particular man among the dozens in authority. No one cared to permit it or to stop it. No one was responsible. No one can be held to account. Such is the nature of all collective action.
“I did not receive the payment I asked. But the owners of Cortlandt got what they needed from me. They wanted a scheme devised to build a structure as cheaply as possible. They found no one else who could do it to their satisfaction. I could and did. They took the benefit of my work and made me contribute it as a gift. But I am not an altruist. I do not contribute gifts of this nature.
“It is said that I have destroyed the home of the destitute. It is forgotten that but for me the destitute could not have had this particular home. Those who were concerned with the poor had to come to me, who have never been concerned, in order to help the poor. It is believed that the poverty of the future tenants gave them the right to my work. That their need constituted a claim on my life. That it was my duty to contribute anything demanded of me.”

Bayernhymne (Engelse vertaling)

God be with thee, Land of the Bavarians,
German soil, fatherland!
Over thy wide area
rest thy merciful hand!
He shall protect thy meadows,
shield the buildings of thy towns
and His Heaven He lifts up
His colours – white and blue.
