Uit: Harry Potter And Deathly Hallows

„When next they met at the entrance, Harry had shown a dozen more people to their places. TheMarquee was nearly full now and for the first time there wasno queue outside. "Nightmare, Muriel is, " said Ron, mopping his forehead onhis sleeve. "She used to come for Christmas every year, then, thank God, she took offense because Fred and George set offa Dungbomb under her chair at diner. Dad always says she'llhave written them out of her will - like they care, they're goingto end up richer than anyone in the family, rate they'regoing... Wow, " he added, blinking rather rapidly as Hermionecame hurrying toward them. "You look great!""Always the tone of surprise, " said Hermione, though shesmiled. She was wearing a floaty, lilac-colored dress withmatching high heels; her hair was sleek and shiny. "YourGreat-Aunt Muriel doesn't agree, I just met her upstairs whileshe was giving Fleur the tiara.

She said, `Oh dear, is this theMuggle-born?' and then, `Bad posture and skinny ankles. '...

Uit: Good Night, Commander (Vertaald door Shadi Eskandani & Helen Mixter)

We creep across the battlefield. We have to be brave because there are so many bombs and tanks, maybe even a land mine. If we are not careful, we could die before we even get to say ouch.

“Attack! Now!” I order and lead the assault. The enemy shoots but nothing can stop us.

Grenades go off and the room fills with smoke, just like in a movie.

The dark is scary, but I’m not afraid of the dark.

“Right, Mom? When we had to hide in the basement and all the other children were crying and screaming because of the bombs. I just sat next to you and covered my ears with my hands. Remember?”

My mother in the picture says, “That’s right, son.”

One of my soldiers screams, “I’ve been hit. I’ve been hit!”

But I’m the Commander. I don’t get scared. I make my way down the hill. Even though my leg hurts, I find the soldier. And I order the troops to stay back..

Then I hear my father calling, “It’s time for dinner. Your uncles and aunties are here.”

Was kommen würde, wird uns entzwein.

During the interrogations that followed, I preferred to admit my status of 'Italian citizen of Jewish race'. I felt thatotherwise I would be unable to justify my presence in places too secluded even for an evacuee; while I believed (wrongly as was subsequently seen) that the admission of my political activity would have meant torture and certain death. As a Jew, I was sent to Fossoli, near Modena, where a vast detention camp, originally meant for English and American prisoners-of-war, collected all the numerous categories of people not approved of by the new-born Fascist Republic.

At the moment of my arrival, that is, at the end of January 1944, there were about one hundred and fifty Italian Jews in the camp, but within a few weeks their number rose to over six hundred. For the most part they consisted of entire families captured by the Fascists or Nazis through their imprudence or following secret accusations. A few had given themselves up spontaneously, reduced to desperation by the vagabond life, or because they lacked the means to survive, or to avoid separation from a captured relation, or even -- absurdly -- 'to be in conformity with the law'. There were also about a hundred Jugoslavian military internees and a few other foreigners who were politically suspect.

The arrival of a squad of German SS men should have made even the optimists doubtful; but we still managed to interpret the novelty in various ways without drawing the most obvious conclusions. Thus, despite everything, the announcement of the deportation caught us all unawares.

On 20 February, the Germans had inspected the camp with care and had publicly and loudly upbraided the Italian commissar for the defective organization of the kitchen service and for the scarce amount of wood distribution for heating; they even said that an infirmary would soon be opened. But on the morning of the 21st we learned that on the following day the Jews would be leaving. All the Jews, without exception. Even the children, even the old, even the ill. Our destination? Nobody knew. We should be prepared for a fortnight of travel. For every person missing at the roll-call, ten would be shot.

Blue Pictures on a Green Easel

your ocean compass is bathing in sunshine
and the prow is digging into
white sand before stopping ..
no footprints left by naked feet here
nor any bird carcasses dissolved in salt
only wet flapping sails clapping you on your back
and wind across your sun-burned shoulders ..

the Tristan albatross is still hovering over the mast-top
polishing its scientific gaze against the surface of the sea
this ocean on eternity's ball bearings
and rocks worn round and shaped by wavy fingers ..
you stand at the shores of your own body
feeling the tide rise in your eyes
while you observe the lonely coconut
which the ocean has brought here from another shore ..

maybe cut loose with a sharp machete
or chewed into freedom by the dentures of the wind ..
there is no tsunami on its way into this island kingdom
do these micro-continents know each other's names?
you wonder while time becomes a large strange bird
across the same ocean which answers its own echo
and rolls on with its sleep-walker's heart intact ..
your skin desert drinks this all-embracing blue
waiting for the night to light its diamonds

Tranquillement. Calmement.

Premachands moeder overleed toen Premchand zeven jaar oud was.

„At the door of the thatched hut, father and son sat beside a smoldering fire pit in silence. Inside, the son’s young wife Buddya was tossing and turning in labor pains, letting out agonizing moans that made the two of them cringe. It was a cold winter night, a deathlike silence hung in the air, and the entire village was shrouded in darkness.

“Sounds like she’s not gonna make it,” said Gheesu, the father. “This has been going on all day! Why don’t you go take a look at her?”

“What’s there to see?” muttered Mahdo despondently. “If she’s going to die, why can’t she just get it over with quickly?”

“What an ungrateful wretch! How can you share life’s sorrows with the woman a whole year, then just turn your back on her?”

“Why don’t you go, if you want to see her thrashing around in pain like that?”

The men were from the lowest Hindu caste and had a bad reputation throughout the village for their negligence. For every day Gheesu worked, he gave himself a three-day vacation. Mahdo was just as much of a loafer, rewarding every hour of work with an hour to smoke his pipe. This was why no one would hire them. Even as much as a handful of grain in the house served as an excuse not to work. When they came to the brink of

starvation, Gheesu would climb trees and break off branches for firewood and Mahdo would sell them in the market, and as long as the money lasted, they would wander around doing nothing. When they found themselves starving again, they would collect more firewood to sell or look for manual labor. Because they lived in a farming village, there was always a demand for labor – any hard-working person could find dozens of jobs. But Gheesu and Mahdo were only hired when someone had no alternative but to be content with getting the services of one man for the price of two.“

Auch der andre, der bist du

Was die Erde mir geliehen,
Fordert sie schon jetzt zurück.
Naht sich, mir vom Leib zu ziehen
Sanft entwindend Stück für Stück.

Um so mehr, als ich gelitten,
Um so schöner ward die Welt.
Seltsam, dass, was ich erstritten,
Sachte aus der Hand mir fällt.

Um so leichter, als ich werde,
Um so schwerer trag' ich mich.
Kannst du mich, du feuchte Erde,
Nicht entbehren? frag' ich dich.

"Nein, ich kann dich nicht entbehren,
Muss aus dir ein' andern bauen,
Muss aus dir ein' andern nähren,
Soll sich auch die Welt anschauen.

Doch getröste dich in Ruh'.

„It was not until Leslie swore at me for being so handless with the boathook that I drew her alongside. We reached down with our hands. When I felt the chilled flesh under my fingertips I moved more quickly. It was sagging away from us and it slopped softly and obscenely against the bilges. It was touching it that made me realize how bloated it was.

Leslie said: “For Christ’s sake get a bloody grip on it!”

I leant down until my face was nearly touching the water and with my right hand got hold of one of the ankles. She turned over smoothly then, like the fat underbelly of a fish. Together we pulled her to the surface and, dripping a curtain of river-water, over the gunwale. Her weight settled with a flat, splashing sound on the wooden boards of the deck. Puddles of water formed quickly at the knees and where the chin lay.

We looked at her and then at each other but neither of us said anything. It was obscene, the way death usually is, frightening and obscene at the same time.

“A hundred and thirty at eleven pence a pound”: an irrelevant thought… I didn’t know how it came to me, and for more than one reason, partly because I knew Leslie would be shocked, I didn’t utter it. Later you will see what I mean.

The ambulance didn’t arrive until after breakfast. I don’t suppose they were in a hurry because I told them she was dead on the telephone. We threw a couple of potato sacks over her so that she wouldn’t frighten the kid and then I went over and telephoned and went back and joined Leslie and his wife and the kid at breakfast.

“No egg this morning?” I said.

Ella said no, that she’d forgotten to buy them the previous day when she went to get the stores. But I knew that wasn’t true because I’d seen her take them from her basket when she returned. That made

me angry, that she didn’t take the trouble to remember how she’d examined the shells because she thought she might have broken one of them, and me there in the cabin at the time. It was a kind of insult.“

"Then it's all your fault, yes. You mentioned. You're being awfully hard on yourself. Boys disobey their parents with such great regular¬ity that it's barely worth a comment; and if yours is talented enough to rebel in such grand fashion, then you ought to consider it a point of pride that he's such a sharp lad." She leaned forward on her one el¬bow, laying her mechanical forearm down on the bar. "Now tell me, you don't really think—do you—that there's anything you could've done to keep him out of here?"

"I don't know. Probably not."

Someone behind Briar gave her back a friendly pat. It startled her, but there was nothing salacious about the gesture so she didn't flinch away from it. Besides, this was more friendly human contact than she'd had in years, and the pleasantness of it smoothed the keen, guilty edge of her sorrow.

"Let me ask you this, then," Lucy tried. "What if you'd given him all the answers to every question he ever asked. Would he have liked those answers?"

"No, he wouldn't have," she confessed.

"Would he have accepted them?"

"I doubt it."

The barwoman sighed in sympathy and said, "And there you go, don't you? One day, he'd have gotten a bee in his bonnet about the old homestead, and he'd have come poking about regardless. Boys are boys, they are. They're useless and ornery as can be, and when they grow up they're even worse."

Briar said, "But this particular boy is mine. I love him, and I owe him. And I can't even find him."

FOR MEXICO CITY

Mexico! Capital! City of crowds
where proud
Flora flaunts her greatest paradise.
If I toast to her don’t be surprised,
she is my native city, my birthplace,
where I first felt sunlight on my face!
What grand museum, my city;
everywhere I see
cars, carriages, trucks, the roads
to a thousand schools and private homes,
for my people, young and old,
move among them, science and affection to behold.
But human tongue cannot describe
such pleasure that I feel inside
my city; you may think that I exaggerate
but it’s the truth; and just in case
you want more proof, take
a journey to my land by train
and you’ll see it’s no mistake
what has been spoken here to you by one.

Song

The linnet in the rocky dells,

The moor-lark in the air,

The bee among the heather bells

That hide my lady fair:

The wild deer browse above her breast;

The wild birds raise their brood;

And they, her smiles of love caressed,

Have left her solitude!

I ween, that when the grave's dark wall

Did first her form retain,

They thought their hearts could ne'er recall

The light of joy again.

They thought the tide of grief would flow

Unchecked through future years;

But where is all their anguish now,

And where are all their tears?

Well, let them fight for honour's breath,

Or pleasure's shade pursue--

The dweller in the land of death

Is changed and careless too.

And, if their eyes should watch and weep

Till sorrow's source were dry,

She would not, in her tranquil sleep,

Return a single sigh!

Blow, west-wind, by the lonely mound,

And murmur, summer-streams--

There is no need of other sound

To soothe my lady's dreams.
