Als 'k dood ben

De Poolse schrijver Jerzy Andrzejewski werd geboren op 19 augustus 1909 in Warschau. Zijn eerste verhalenbundel verscheen in 1936 onder de titel Drogi Nieuniknione (De onvermijdelijke wegen). Twee jaar later verscheen de roman Ład serca (Orde van het hart). Tijdens WO II werkte Andrzejewsk voor het Poolse verzet en streed hij voor het behoud van de Poolse cultuur. Zijn ontwikkeling van katholiek tot communistisch schrijver maakte zijn in 1946 verschenen werk Popiół i diament (Duits, Asche und Diamant) duidelijk. In 1976 was Andrzejewski mede-oprichter van de intellectuele oppositiegroep KOR (Komitee ter verdediging van de arbeiders).

De Iers-Amerikaanse schrijver Frank McCourt werd geboren op 19 augustus 1930 in New York als zoon van een immigrantenfamilie. Toen hij vier jaar was keerde zijn familie naar Ierland terug. Daar groeide hij in armoedige omstandigheden op in het katholieke Limerick. Zijn vader was werkloos en gaf het meeste van zijn uitkering aan drank uit. In 1949 had McCourt genoeg geld om een ticket naar New York te kunnen betalen. Daar werkte hij in hotels en ging hij in het leger. Na zijn diensttijd verdiende hij het geld om een studie te betalen in pakhuizen en op doks. Hij werd leraar en doceerde tenslotte op de gerenommeerde Stuyvesant High School in New York. Na zijn oensionering verwerkte McCourt zijn moeilijke jeugd in de autobiografische roman Angela's Ashes. Het werd met zes miljoen verkochte exemplaren een internationale bestseller en leverde hem in 1997 de Pulitzer prijs op. Ook werd het boek in 1999 door Alan Parker verfilmd. De Amerikaanse schrijver James Gould Cozzens werd geboren op 19 augustus 1903 in Chicago. Hij studeerde twee jaar aan de universiteit van Harvard, waar hij in 1924 zijn eerste roman Confusion publiceerde. Een paar maanden later, ziek en geplaagd door schulden, verliet hij Harvard, ging naar New Brunswick in Canada en schreef zijn tweede roman Michael Scarlett. Geen van de boeken verkocht goed. Cozzens vertrok naar Cuba om les te geven aan kinderen van Amerikanen. Hij begon korte verhalen te schrijven en verzamelde materiaal voor Cock Pit (1928) en The Son of Perdition (1929). Tijdens WO II diende hij bij de Amerikaanse luchtmacht. Zijn ervaringen daar vormden de basis voor Guard of Honor, zijn romaqn uit 1948 die hem in 1949 de Pulitzer prijs opleverde. Verrassenderwijs werd By Love Possessed in 1957 een enorm succes. Het boek stond vierendertig weken op de The New York Times Best Seller list.

De Amerikaanse dichter Li-Young Lee werd geboren op 19 augustus 1957 in Jakarta, Indonesië. Hij stamt uit een Chinese familie. In 1959 ontvluchtte zijn familie het land vanwege de anti Chinese stemming en kwam via Hongkong, Macau en Japan uiteindelijk in 1964 in de VS terecht. Lee bezocht o.a. de universiteit van Oittsburgh, waar hij zijn liefde voor het schrijven ontwikkelde. Daarna doceerde hij zelf aan verschillende universiteiten, waaronder Northwestern en de University of Iowa. Terukerende thema’s in zijn poëzie zijn ballingschap en de moed om te rebelleren.

De Engelse schrijver Jonathan Coe werd geboren op 19 augustus 1961 in Birmingham. Coe studeerde aan de King Edward's School en aan Trinity College, Cambridge. Zijn romans, waarin hij vaak sociale en politike thema’s aansnijdt,  kenmerken zich door humor en satire. Zijn roman The Rotter´s Club uit 2001 is autobiografisch getint. Het boek werd zowel voor de radio als voor de televisie bewerkt.

De Tsjechische dichter en vertaler Václav Bolemír Nebeský werd geboren op 18 augustus 1818 in Nový Dvůr. Hij studeerde filosofie, Griekse geschiedenis en Tsjechische literatuur aan de Karelsuniversiteit in Praag. In 1850 werd hij redacteur van het tijdschrift Muzejník, dat hij tot 1861 leidde. Daarnaast was hij secretaris van het Tsjechische museum. In 1874 werd hij ernstig ziek en ging hij met vervroegd pensioen. Zijn grootste liefde was de poëzie. Ook vertaalde hij dramatisch werk van Griekse dichters.

De Oostenrijkse schrijver en journalist Hugo Bettauer werd geboren op 18 augustus 1872 in Baden bij Wenen. In 1899 trok hij naar New York waar hij als correspondent en redacteur bij verschillende kranten werkte. Na zijn terugkeer naar Oostenrijk in 1910 was de Amerikaanse staatsburger redacteur bij de Neue Freien Presse en in 1924 richtte hij het tijdschrift Er und Sie op, Wochenschrift für Lebenskultur und Erotik, dat echter na vijf afleveringen moest stoppen. Zijn roman „Die Stadt ohne Juden" uit 1922 werd verfilmd en was bij de première in 1924 aanleiding voor hevige demonstraties. Een half jaar later werd Bettauer in Wenen door een nationaalsocialistische fanaticus doodgeschoten. Ook zijn roman "Die freudlose Gasse" werd verfilmd, en wel met niemand minder dan Greta Garbo.

“Von der Universität bis zur Bellaria umlagerte das schöne, ruhige und vornehme Parlamentsgebäude eine einzige Menschenmauer. Ganz Wien schien sich an diesem Junitag um die zehnte Vormittagsstunde versammelt zu haben, um dort zu sein, wo sich ein historisches Ereignis von unabsehbarer Tragweite abspielen sollte. Bürger und Arbeiter, Damen und Frauen aus dem Volke, halbwüchsige Burschen und Greise, junge Mädchen, kleine Kinder, Kranke im Rollwagen, alles quoll durcheinander, schrie, politisierte und schwitzte. De Perzische dichter Moulana Nuruddin Abdorrahman Jami werd geboren op 18 augustus 1414 in een dorpje bij Jam, in het huidige Afghanistan. Zijn familie verhuisde naar Heart, waar hij wiskunde, natuurkunde, Arabische literatuur en islamitische filosofie kon studeren. Hij voltooide zijn studies in Samarkand. Zijn nalatenschap bestaat uit 81 werken, waaronder gedichtbundels, geschiedkundige, filosofische, taalkundige werken en commentaren.

De Duitse schrijver Ulrich Woelk werd geboren op 18 augustus 1960 in Beuel bij Bonn. Tot 1987 studeerde hij natuurkunde in Tübingen, in 1991 promoveerde hij aan de Technische Universiteit in Berlijn. Tot 1994 was hij daar werkzaam als astrofysicus. Sinds 1995 leeft hij als zelfstandig schrijver in Berlijn. In 1990 ontving hij de Aspekte-Literaturpreis.

De Duitse schrijver Marc Degens werd geboren op 18 augustus 1971 in Essen. Hij studeerde germanistiek en sociologie in Bochum. Sinds 1999 leeft hij als zelfstandig schrijver in Berlijn. Hij is lid van de band Superschiff en uitgever van het online magazine satt.org en van de serie Schöner Lesen die wordt uitgegeven door de Berlijnse uitgeverij SuKuLTuR en die, opvallend genoeg, sinds 2004 in Duitsland wordt verspreid via snoepautomaten. Uit 1997 stamt zijn roman „vanity love“. In 2006 verscheen het verhaal RÜCKBAU, geïllustreerd met eigen tekeningen.

Uit: unsere popmoderne

De Nederlandse cabaretier, musicalster en schrijver Jos Brink is vanmiddag overleden. Jos Brink werd op 19 juni 1942 in Heiloo geboren. Hij verwierf ook grote bekendheid als predikant, hoorspelacteur en tv-presentator. Als dichter denkt men niet zo gauw aan hem, maar hij schreef ook wel poëzie.

MET DICHTE OGEN  

Als ik mijn ogen sluit zie ik dat jij er bent

en met mijn ogen kan ik door je haren woelen

en met mijn ogen weer je lippen voelen

en alles wat ik heb verkend.

Ik zie je handen met mijn ogen dicht

Jos Brink

De Franse dichter en schrijver Robert Sabatier werd geboren op 17 augustus 1923 in Parijs. Sinds 1971 is hij lid van de l'Académie Goncourt. Hij schrijft gedichten die de invloed verrraden van het surrealisme. In zijn proza draait het vaak om outsiders Sabatier schreef eveneens een Histoire de la Poésie française.

De Franse schrijver en diplomaat Roger Peyrefitte werd geboren op 17 augustus 1907 in  Castres. Na zijn afstuderen ving hij een diplomatieke carrière aan als ambassadesecretaris in Athene van 1933 tot 1938. Zijn openbaar homoseksueel gedrag werd een tijdje gedoogd tot hij gedwongen werd ontslag te nemen om ‘familiale redenen’. Terug op de Quai d’Orsay, het hoofdkwartier van de Franse diplomaten, gaf hij na enige tijd ontslag ‘om persoonlijke redenen’, maar werd in volle oorlogstijd in 1943 gereïntegreerd in de “carrière”. In februari 1945 zag hij zich verplicht, nu om politieke redenen, zich volledig uit de diplomatieke wereld terug te trekken. Ondertussen was hij een literaire loopbaan begonnen met de publicatie van de ‘Amitiés’, dat een overweldigend succes kende en meteen bekroond werd met de Renaudot-prijs. In 1964 werd het boek ‘Les Amitiés particuliéres’ verfilmd.

De Amerikaanse schrijver Jonathan Franzen werd geboren op 17 augustus 1959 in Western Springs, Illinois. Hij groeide op in St. Louis en studeerde in het begin van de jaren tachtig in Berlijn. In 1988 verscheen zijn debuutroman The Twenty-Seventh City. In 1992 volgde Strong Motion en in 2001 kreeg hij voor zijn derde boek The Corrections de National Book Award. In 2002 verscheen de bundel essays How to be alone.

De Russische dichter Anton Delvig werd geboren op 17 augustus 1798 in Moskou. Hij studeerde samen met Aleksandr Poesjkin aan het lyceum Zarskoje Selo en raakte met hem bevriend. Samen gaven ze de Literaturnaya Gazeta uit (1830-1831). Delvig stond in de traditie van het Russische neoclassicisme.

Theodor Däubler (17 augustus 1876 – 13 juni 1934)

De Duitse dichter en schrijver Theodor Däubler werd geboren op 17 augustus 1876 in Triëst. Daar, en in Venetië, groeide hij op. Däubler werd tweetalig (Duits en Italiaans) opgevoed. Na zijn eindexamen gymnasium trok hij met zijn ouders naar Wenen. Daarna begon voor hem een leven van voortdurend reizen, o.a. naar Napels, Berlijn, Parijs en Florence. Tijdens WO I woonde hij in Berlijn en in Wenen. Vanaf 1910 verschenen zijn eerste werken die door de dichters van het opkomende expressionisme enthousiast onthaald werden. Dat gold ook voor Das Nordlicht, een groots opgezet versepos in drie delen, waaraan Däubler al in 1898 begonnen was.

When we first met in West Africa his talk was almost all about sex. To keep my end up I said that African women were attractive. He said, 'If you like the animal thing.' He is now training to be a diplomat for when his country becomes independent, and to him London is paradise. He has two ambitions. The first is to have a grandchild who will be pure white in appearance. He is half-way there. He has five mulatto children, by five white women, and he feels that all he has to do now is to keep an eye on the children and make sure they don't let him down. He wants when he is old to walk down the King's Road with this white grand child. People will stare and the child will say, loudly, 'What are they staring at, Grandfather?' His second ambition is to be the first black man to have an account at Coutts. That's the Queen's bank."
