so ohne Weh:

Uit: The New York Quarterly, Number 64

Living, taking it all in, and then writing.
Existing within that negative capability of Keats: "being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason." This is the flux of life where poetry exists, when we just are. We just have to allow it, be it and then write it.
Reporting back that which you have seen in the unity with the self, the ascension of the mountain, God, whatever you want to call it. The difference, it has been said, between a poet and a mystic is that the poet must return from the mountain and tell others what has been seen from the top, the mystic must leap off into oblivion.
"You can't lead bunny lives and write tiger poetry," we were constantly chided by William Packard, who lived up to his own teaching in every way. Live life to its fullest, scream that barbaric yawp across every rooftop, savor the sucking of every ounce of that marrow. Contribute that verse to the play of Whitman.
Uncle Walt goes on in his prose piece, A Winter Day on the Sea-Beach, to correlate poetry and life:
"The attractions, fascinations there are in sea and shore! How one dwells on their simplicity, even vacuity! What is it in us, arous'd by those indirections and directions? That spread of waves and gray-white beach, salt, monotonous, senseless—such an entire absence of art, books, talk, elegance—so indescribably comforting, even this winter day—grim, yet so delicate-looking, so spiritual— striking emotional, impalpable depths, subtler than all the poems, paintings, music I have ever read, seen, heard. (Yet let me be fair, perhaps it is because I have read those poems and heard that music.)"
Real life, real poetry infinitely intertwined.

Uit: The Solitary Summer

"It isn't going to freeze, and I won't look at anything until you have told me what you think of my idea. Wouldn't a whole lovely summer, quite alone, be delightful? Wouldn't it be perfect to get up every morning for weeks and feel that you belong to yourself and to nobody else?" And I went over to him and put a hand on each shoulder and gave him a little shake, for he persisted in gazing at the stars just as though I had not been there. "Please, Man of Wrath, say something long for once," I entreated; "you haven't said a good long sentence for a week."

He slowly brought his gaze from the stars down to me and smiled. Then he drew me on to his knee.

"Don't get affectionate," I urged; "it is words, not deeds, that I want. But I'll stay here if you'll talk."

"Well then, I will talk. What am I to say? You know you do as you please, and I never interfere with you. If you do not want to have any one here this summer you will not have any one, but you will find it a very long summer."

"No, I won't."

"And if you lie on the heath all day, people will think you are mad."

"What do I care what people think?"

"No, that is true. But you will catch cold, and your little nose will swell."

"Let it swell."

"And when it is hot you will be sunburnt and your skin spoilt."

"I don't mind my skin."

"And you will be dull."

"Dull?"

It often amuses me to reflect how very little the Man of Wrath really knows me. Here we have been three years buried in the country, and I as happy as a bird the whole time. I say as a bird, because other people have used the simile to describe absolute cheerfulness, although I do not believe birds are any happier than any one else, and they quarrel disgracefully. I have been as happy then, we will say, as the best of birds, and have had seasons of solitude at intervals before now during which dull is the last word to describe my state of mind.“

To the River Euphrates

Euphrates, which is mine, doth flow or not,

There where its mountains feed its rush and roar.

And through those hills and plains by most forgot,

And by these eyes not seen, for evermore

Euphrates swells and rolls majestically,

Or is now dry, and arid myth, a tale.

If this is so, the truth, so let it be.

In me Euphrates is; nor can it fail

To ride its bed and cool its burning earth

With drink, and mine as well. Of wing no flight

May end in graceless crash. No spirit’s mirth

May burn and die by heaven’s harshest light.

Euphrates flows, however it may be

That but in dreams these eyes its grace may see.

To Lake Van

Lake Van, O inland sea my father saw

With stinging eyes and steadfast blurring stare,

Our hearts unite in race’s filial prayer.

His blood to mine restores that fearful awe

He felt as he from homeland’s shore turned west,

Smothering harsh and violent farewell.

O lake and symbol of our grief, they spell

With growing strength denies all easy rest.

He from his spirit’s soil took lasting leave,

From heavens that his legend had sustained,

And though he left and died, there he remained

In his young ghost, above thy cool grieve,

Lament and weep in mists and pouring rains,

O Lake and pool of all your mortal pains.

Baiser rose, baiser bleu

A une robe rose

Que tu me plais dans cette robe
Qui te déshabille si bien,
Faisant jaillir ta gorge en globe,
Montrant tout nu ton bras païen !

Frêle comme une aile d'abeille,
Frais comme un coeur de rose-thé,
Son tissu, caresse vermeille,
Voltige autour de ta beauté.

De l'épiderme sur la soie
Glissent des frissons argentés,
Et l'étoffe à la chair renvoie
Ses éclairs roses reflétés.

D'où te vient cette robe étrange
Qui semble faite de ta chair,
Trame vivante qui mélange
Avec ta peau son rose clair ?

Est-ce à la rougeur de l'aurore,
A la coquille de Vénus,
Au bouton de sein près d'éclore,
Que sont pris ces tons inconnus ?

Ou bien l'étoffe est-elle teinte
Dans les roses de ta pudeur ?
Non ; vingt fois modelée et peinte,
Ta forme connaît sa splendeur.

Jetant le voile qui te pèse,
Réalité que l'art rêva,
Comme la princesse Borghèse
Tu poserais pour Canova.

Et ces plis roses sont les lèvres
De mes désirs inapaisés,
Mettant au corps dont tu les sèvres
Une tunique de baisers.

Meditations on the Fall and Winter Holidays

II
Day of Atonement

III

Feast of Booths

This was a season of our fathers' joy:

not only when they gathered grapes and the fruit of trees

in Israel, but when, locked in the dark and stony streets,

they held--symbols of a life from which they were banished

but to which they would surely return--

the branches of palm trees and of willows, the twigs of the myrtle,

and the bright odorous citrons.

This was the grove of palms with its deep well

in the stony ghetto in the blaze of noon;

this the living stream lined with willows;

and this the thick-leaved myrtles and trees heavy with fruit

in the barren ghetto--a garden

where the unjustly hated were justly safe at last.

In booths this week of holiday

as those who gathered grapes in Israel lived

and also to remember we were cared for

in the wilderness--

I remember how frail my present dwelling is

even if of stones and steel.

I know this is the season of our joy:

we have completed the readings of the Law

and we begin again;

but I remember how slowly I have learnt, how little,

how fast the year went by, the years--how few.

Le long d'un amour (fragmenten)

L’infini n’est autre
Que le sans fin
     va-et-vient
Entre ce qui se cherche
Et ce qui se perd
Mille veines ouvertes
     d’un cœur l’autre

*

D’une main l’autre
Le secret avoué
     demeure secret
À l’instar
     de l’ombre transparente
     ou de l’opaque clarté
Qui s’attarde
Entre
La carafe remplie de vin
Et le bol
     au cœur vide

Offrande
     à l’Inespéré
Que perpétuent
     jour après jour
Deux mains jointes

*

Black Painting

The reins sway vainly,

the whip hits the air,

it won't strike you, it hasn't got you,

the reins sway vainly,

from whence departed God.

Where did He go? He alone knows that, where,

He went to fight for something,

to bring the sails of the windmills wind,

and He went and went, He alone knows where,

He went nailed to His love.

He is elsewhere, how not to put it,

one day He will return, perhaps.

See, moonstruck bailiffs

stride through godforsaken streets

snuffing out lives.

Sonnet

We have our names. We don our clothes,

wear Sunday-shoes,

we note the trinkets that our neighbours wear

but only rarely, after death,

to them, the dying, do we administer pills.

In lavish rags our age is dressed.

Thou supportest nothing, Thou art useless, roof-beam.

Has anyone been cured as yet?

A tatty Bible once read by

lucky old Job himself, after he got out of hospital,

lies somewhere on the floor.

And old God, Our Lord of Slums,

administers cold, sickness, hunger and suffering

in handfuls.

“To Mrs. Saville, England St. Petersburgh, Dec. 11th, 17--

These reflections have dispelled the agitation with which I began my letter, and I feel my heart glow with an enthusiasm which elevates me to heaven, for nothing contributes so much to tranquillize the mind as a steady purpose--a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye.  This expedition has been the favourite dream of my early years. I have read with ardour the accounts of the various voyages which have been made in the prospect of arriving at the North Pacific Ocean through the seas which surround the pole.  You may remember that a history of all the voyages made for purposes of discovery composed the whole of our good Uncle Thomas' library.  My education was neglected, yet I was passionately fond of reading.  These volumes were my study day and night, and my familiarity with them increased that regret which I had felt, as a child, on learning that my father's dying injunction had forbidden my uncle to allow me to embark in a seafaring life.

These visions faded when I perused, for the first time, those poets whose effusions entranced my soul and lifted it to heaven.  I also became a poet and for one year lived in a paradise of my own creation; I imagined that I also might obtain a niche in the temple where the names of Homer and Shakespeare are consecrated.  You are well acquainted with my failure and how heavily I bore the disappointment.

But just at that time I inherited the fortune of my cousin, and my thoughts were turned into the channel of their earlier bent.”

From the Wave

It mounts at sea, a concave wall

Down-ribbed with shine,

And pushes forward, building tall

Its steep incline.

Then from their hiding rise to sight

Black shapes on boards

Bearing before the fringe of white

It mottles towards.

Their pale feet curled, they poise their weight

With a learn'd skill.

It is the wave they imitate

Keeps them so still.

The marbling bodies have become

Half wave, half men,

Grafted it seems by feet of foam

Some seconds, then,

Late as they can, they slice the face

In timed procession:

Balance is triumph in this place,

Triumph possession.

The mindless heave of which they rode

A fluid shelf

Breaks as they leave it, falls and, slowed,

Loses itself.

Clear, the sheathed bodies slick as seals

Loosen and tingle;

And by the board the bare foot feels

The suck of shingle.

They paddle in the shallows still;

Two splash each other;

They all swim out to wait until

The right waves gather.

Heures ternes

Voici d'anciens désirs qui passent,

Encor des songes de lassés,

Encor des rêves qui se lassent;

Voilà les jours d'espoir passés!

En qui faut-il fuir aujourd'hui?

Il n'y a plus d'étoile aucune;

Mais de la glace sur l'ennui

Et des linges bleus sur la lune.

Encor des sanglots pris au piège,

Voyez les malades sans feu,

Et les agneaux brouter la neige;

Ayez pitié de tout, mon Dieu!

Moi, j'attends un peu de réveil,

Moi, j'attends que le sommeil passe,

Moi, j'attends un peu de soleil

Sur mes mains que la lune glace!

Reflets

Mon âme a peur, mon âme a peur.

BY THE SHORE (Fragment)

ALL night by the shore.

The obscure water, the long white lines of advancing foam, the rustle and thud, the panting sea-breaths, the pungent sea-smell,

The great slow air moving from the distant horizon, the immense mystery of space, and the soft canopy of the clouds!

The swooning thuds go on--the drowse of ocean goes on:

The long inbreaths--the short sharp outbreaths--the silence between.

I am a bit of the shore: the waves feed upon me, they come pasturing over me;

I am glad, O waves, that you come pasturing over me.

I am a little arm of the sea: the same tumbling swooning dream goes on--I feel the waves all around me, I spread myself through them.

How delicious! I spread and spread. The waves tumble through and over me--they dash through my face and hair.

The night is dark overhead: I do not see them, but I touch them and hear their gurgling laughter.

The play goes on!

The strange expanding indraughts go on!

Suddenly I am the Ocean itself: the great soft wind creeps over my face.

I am in love with the wind--I reach my lips to its kisses.

How delicious! all night and ages and ages long to spread myself to the gliding wind!

But now (and ever) it maddens me with its touch, I arise and whirl in my bed, and sweep my arms madly along the shores.

I am not sure any more which my own particular bit of shore is;

All the bays and inlets know me: I glide along in and out under the sun by the beautiful coast-line;

My hair floats leagues behind me; millions together my children dash against my face;

I hear what they say and am marvellously content.

All night by the shore;

And the sea is a sea of faces.

The long white lines come up--face after face comes and falls past me--

Thud after thud. Is it pain or joy?

Face after face--endless!

licht.
Ternauwernood verdroegen zij deze zachte
liefdesverklaring.
Ze wilden alleen donker, waarin welwillendheid,
mededogen voor hun brand- en mottengaatjes,
hun slijtage, hun verschoten kale plek.

Sour El Ghozlane

A Sour El Ghozlane, mon village natal,
Vingt-sept années m’enserrent font cahoter ma peine

Ode

Prête-moi ton grand bruit, ta grande allure si douce,

Vos vibrantes voix de chanterelle;
Prêtez-moi la respiration légère et facile
Des locomotives hautes et minces, aux mouvements
Si aisés, les locomotives des rapides,
Précédant sans effort quatre wagons jaunes à lettres d'or

Uit: Faust I

„Prolog im Himmel.

Der Herr. Die himmlischen Heerscharen. Nachher Mephistopheles. Die drei Erzengel treten vor.

Raphael:

Die Sonne tönt, nach alter Weise,
In Brudersphären Wettgesang,
Und ihre vorgeschriebne Reise
Vollendet sie mit Donnergang.
Ihr Anblick gibt den Engeln Stärke,
Wenn keiner sie ergründen mag;
die unbegreiflich hohen Werke
Sind herrlich wie am ersten Tag.

Gabriel:

Und schnell und unbegreiflich schnelle
Dreht sich umher der Erde Pracht;
Es wechselt Paradieseshelle
Mit tiefer, schauervoller Nacht.
Es schäumt das Meer in breiten Flüssen
Am tiefen Grund der Felsen auf,
Und Fels und Meer wird fortgerissen
Im ewig schnellem Sphärenlauf.

Michael:

Und Stürme brausen um die Wette
Vom Meer aufs Land, vom Land aufs Meer,
und bilden wütend eine Kette
Der tiefsten Wirkung rings umher.
Da flammt ein blitzendes Verheeren
Dem Pfade vor des Donnerschlags.
Doch deine Boten, Herr, verehren
Das sanfte Wandeln deines Tags.

Zu drei:

Der Anblick gibt den Engeln Stärke,
Da keiner dich ergründen mag,
Und alle deine hohen Werke
Sind herrlich wie am ersten Tag.

Mephistopheles:

Da du, o Herr, dich einmal wieder nahst
Und wenn mich auch der ganze Kreis verhöhnt;
Hättst du ihm nicht den Schein des Himmelslichts gegeben;
Und gleich im Gras ihr altes Liedchen singt;

Neem afscheid in uw eigen stijl.

Love Is

Love is in the horizon,

it sits upon the sand;

the whispers in the hallway,

revealing secrets grand.

It's dancing in the rain

and in the blazing sun;

the mighty flowing river,

the voice of a long lost son.

Love is in the desert,

in the oasis' leafy fronds;

the racing tiny tadpoles

in lazy summer ponds.

It's teary airport farewells

and walks on a moonlit night;

the gentle flowing breezes

that quiet the frightened heart.

Charade in Review

The masks we wear, to us are given,

assigned to us before our cue.

The choice is ours to reveal or hide-

A grand charade with many a clue.

Would you be this or be you that;

Is it surfaced or is it hidden?

Not all secrets are lies or deceit,

Our view of others we must widen.

The genuine heart will itself reveal

Its spots or stripes are where they're at.

The lot of what we think we see,

provide but circumstantial caveat.

We often discard what eyes can't see;

Too often distrust what hearts conceal.

The masquerade of life continues,

Its colours and shapes our truths congeal.

The Bistro Styx

She was thinner, with a mannered gauntness
as she paused just inside the double
glass doors to survey the room, silvery cape
billowing dramatically behind her.What's this,

I thought, lifting a hand until
she nodded and started across the parquet;
that's when I saw she was dressed all in gray,
from a kittenish cashmere skirt and cowl

down to the graphite signature of her shoes.
"Sorry I'm late," she panted, though
she wasn't, sliding into the chair, her cape

tossed off in a shudder of brushed steel.
We kissed. Then I leaned back to peruse
my blighted child, this wary aristocratic mole.

"How's business?" I asked, and hazarded
a motherly smile to keep from crying out:
Are you content to conduct your life
as a cliché and, what's worse,

an anachronism, the brooding artist's demimonde?
Near the rue Princesse they had opened
a gallery cum souvenir shop which featured
fuzzy off-color Monets next to his acrylics, no doubt,

plus beared African drums and the occasional miniature
gargoyle from Notre Dame the Great Artist had
carved at breakfast with a pocket knife.

"Tourists love us.The Parisians, of course"--
she blushed--"are amused, though not without
a certain admiration . . ."
The Chateaubriand

arrived on a bone-white plate, smug and absolute
in its fragrant crust, a black plug steaming
like the heart plucked from the chest of a worthy enemy;
one touch with her fork sent pink juices streaming.

"Admiration for what?"Wine, a bloody
Pinot Noir, brought color to her cheeks."Why,
the aplomb with which we've managed
to support our Art"--meaning he'd convinced

her to pose nude for his appalling canvases,
faintly futuristic landscapes strewn
with carwrecks and bodies being chewed

by rabid cocker spaniels."I'd like to come by
the studio," I ventured, "and see the new stuff."
"Yes, if you wish . . ."A delicate rebuff

before the warning: "He dresses all
in black now.Me, he drapes in blues and carmine--
and even though I think it's kinda cute,
in company I tend toward more muted shades."

She paused and had the grace
to drop her eyes. She did look ravishing,
spookily insubstantial, a lipstick ghost on tissue,
or as if one stood on a fifth-floor terrace

peering through a fringe of rain at Paris'
dreaming chimney pots, each sooty issue
wobbling skyward in an ecstatic oracular spiral.

"And he never thinks of food.I wish
I didn't have to plead with him to eat. . . ."Fruit
and cheese appeared, arrayed on leaf-green dishes.

I stuck with café crème."This Camembert's
so ripe," she joked, "it's practically grown hair,"
mucking a golden glob complete with parsley sprig
onto a heel of bread.Nothing seemed to fill

her up: She swallowed, sliced into a pear,
speared each tear-shaped lavaliere
and popped the dripping mess into her pretty mouth.
Nowhere the bright tufted fields, weighted

vines and sun poured down out of the south.
"But are you happy?"Fearing, I whispered it
quickly."What?You know, Mother"--

she bit into the starry rose of a fig--
"one really should try the fruit here."
I've lost her, I thought, and called for the bill.

In Westminster Abbey

Let me take this other glove off
As the vox humana swells,
And the beauteous fields of Eden
Bask beneath the Abbey bells.
Here, where England's statesmen lie,
Listen to a lady's cry.

Gracious Lord, oh bomb the Germans,
Spare their women for Thy Sake,
And if that is not too easy
We will pardon Thy Mistake.
But, gracious Lord, whate'er shall be,
Don't let anyone bomb me.

Keep our Empire undismembered
Guide our Forces by Thy Hand,
Gallant blacks from far Jamaica,
Honduras and Togoland;
Protect them Lord in all their fights,
And, even more, protect the whites.

Think of what our Nation stands for,
Books from Boots' and country lanes,
Free speech, free passes, class distinction,
Democracy and proper drains.
Lord, put beneath Thy special care
One-eighty-nine Cadogan Square.

Although dear Lord I am a sinner,
I have done no major crime;
Now I'll come to Evening Service
Whensoever I have the time.
So, Lord, reserve for me a crown,
And do not let my shares go down.

I will labour for Thy Kingdom,
Help our lads to win the war,
Send white feathers to the cowards
Join the Women's Army Corps,
Then wash the steps around Thy Throne
In the Eternal Safety Zone.

Now I feel a little better,
What a treat to hear Thy Word,
Where the bones of leading statesmen
Have so often been interr'd.
And now, dear Lord, I cannot wait
Because I have a luncheon date.

The Landfall Desk

Desk, your Landfall people segmented within the drawers,
your sides battered, knocked at by writers wanting to get out and into Print,
your body sawn in half and rejoined, your toes cut off,
You squat in the middle of the room
You don't dare to attack now with your sharp corners
the passing literary aspirants breathing their cherished syllables.
You malicious, magnificent-mileaged one-owner desk,
you were kind in your time,
used kindly, too,
were never at the mercy of a mad shifter of furniture
trained for the secondhand kill, bred among giraffe pianos
and minute waltzes, quite mad, mad among the mahogany and walnut.

I think I will keep you, malicious desk.
You refuse to stay tidy, you get stuck and you wobble on your cut legs
The edges of the wound around your middle
will never meet again; you are unbalanced, overweight.

I remember the day I took you in,
a Dunedin day of generous cloud
— no niggardly blowaway tufts in those journeying skies
pursuing their massive somewhere along a one–track wind from the mountains to the sea
towards the north, the Peninsula and beyond.
There was some suggestion that day, I remember, that I remove my front door to admit you.
It was not necessary. How agile you were, how accommodating, how fitting!

You were something to live up to.
Perhaps, after all, something I could never face –
too good, too clever, too correct.

Mind my reputation, you said, when I dropped the wrong word or touched you with a misplaced syllable.
It was later, I remember, that your corners began to attack me as I walked by you.
Once, during my absence, the occupants of the house dismembered you and hid you in the cellar until I returned.
I would never have known except for the white-faced literary person who beckoned me in the street one day
You can't guess what they did! Her horror was clear.
— What did they do?
— I don't know how to tell you.
Tell me.
— They took it to pieces. It was too big. The room couldn't take both the desk and the double bed.
I was calm. I knew.
— You mean, I said, The Landfall Desk?
I thought she was going to faint.
The Landfall Desk!
— How dreadful, I said, without meaning it. I was curious, though, about its battle with the double bed,
its assertion — There isn't room for both of us.

Eight-legged, a kind of spider secreting, outpouring your daily web,
a mad, crooked, crippled piece of furniture,
bathing in golden literary history,
in spite of all, you go with me, Landfall Desk, kept,
endured, burrowed in by the blossoming alphabet
in spite of all, in my shifting life, you go with me . . .

“I think I expected something that would combine the feeling of a clinic with the spookiness of a madhouse in a bad film. But this was -well, it was Swiss. Very Swiss, for though there was nothing of the cuckoo clock, or the bank, or milk chocolate about it, it had a sort of domesticity shorn of coziness, a matter-of-factness within which one could not be quite sure of its facts, that put me at a disadvantage.”

“We generally begin with what we call anamnesis.... We look at your history, and meet some people there whom you may know or perhaps you don't, but who are portions of yourself. We take a look at what you remember, and at some things you thought you had forgotten. As that goes on we find we are going much deeper. And when that is satisfactorily explored, we decide whether to go deeper still, to that part of you which is beyond the unique, to the common heritage of mankind.”

Nam niet de Grote Houdini in
de ene hand zijn hoge hoed, en
in de andere een olifant die hij
met een eenvoudig gebaar voorgoed
in zijn hoofddeksel kon doen
verdwijnen?

Wat een onrecht.

Mijn hoofd is bloot, en jij,
niet eens zo groot en zonder
slurf (nou ja), toonbeeld van
schoonheid, na zoveel jaar durf jij
nog steeds genadeloos aan mij
verschijnen.

Toe, vil mijn schaam dat wit

en kanonsloop wat was krom.

Vel mijn boom de achterdocht
en zaag de takken trommelstok van
liefde. Drum je namen in mijn

Hou me hou me hou me vast, en
kerf uit mij jouw boot. Sla
je peddels ritme op mij plat,
en bedwing met mij de dood.

Uit: The PowerBook

„I think it is fair to say that my parents were not loved as children, that they did not love each other and that they did not love me. There was possession, fear, sentimentality, desire, but not love. This has left me with certain absences and certain intensities.

Absent is any real sense of family, of bonding, of belonging. Intensified is a longing for love as it really is -- as freedom, abundance, generosity, passion. What Dante calls ‘the love that moves the sun and the other stars’.

This love exists. Perhaps it is the only thing that exists. It is the buried treasure. The treasure is really there.

Fragments, hints, clues, letters, persuade me on. I've come near it sometimes, but like Lancelot outside the Chapel of the Grail, I haven't been able to go in. I may never be able to go in.

In your face, in your body, as you walk and lie down and eat and read, you have become the lineaments of love. When I touch you I touch something deeper than you. This touches something in me otherwise too sunk to recover.

I suffer. I intentionally put myself in the way of suffering as a test, as a measure, to see what will be drawn up -- to stop myself from closing up. I don't want to close the wound.

Love wounds. There is no love that does not pierce the hands and feet. Love's exquisite happiness is also love's exquisite pain. I do not seek pain but there is pain. I do not seek suffering but there is suffering. It is better not to flinch, not to try and avoid those things in love's direction. It is not easy, this love, but only the impossible is worth the effort.

In the Grail legends Lancelot, the best knight in the world, never does see the Grail because he cannot give up his love for Guinevere. As a moral essay this suggests that human passion is no substitute for divine love and that it prevents us from experiencing love fully. This has been the basis of Christian thought since St Paul.“

AMERICA

America saved my life. I should like to
admit this conviction, free of fancy,
as the lasting reality time made of it.

It has been a long life. America, with whose
servicemen I shared a Pacific War perimeter
in a world of total combat, flew in
penicillin. While I was still in field
hospital, Truman dropped the Atom Bomb,
sending troops who had lived on their nerves
far too long half crazy in the night; and
guaranteeing my return home. Subsequently
I was to turn to America for periodic
residence, and to be given it amongst the
most generous people I have known. During
one sojourn, American oak broke a bad fall
that could have removed me as the Pacific
nearly did. At the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota,
where for several years I was a visitor,
cortisone was discovered; it sustains
breathing, and for that purpose I require it.

Hence this series of Poems For America,
given the specific title of America My Breath,
with Dedication and appended Histories.

If, in the series, I seem to have written as
a pillager, putting my New World to work for
me, I have done so as a person who found
there, for all its faults, a great nation,
and a sense of freedom and the remarkable.
I hope American friends will accept my
examination of their epic history. I have
used it as a warning image of what can be
lost, like breath

Uit: Eleanor the Queen

“It might be necessary for you to leave quickly,” she said, “so I will leave it ajar. If anyone should come to that door”—she nodded towards the door on the other side of the room, a heavy, bolted door—“waste no time. Run. For once you know the secret, your life will be in real danger!” “What secret?” he asked. “Oh, Eleanor, what is all this? Why did you send for me so secretly? And it’s been so long . . .” He took her hand and brushed it with his lips as he realized that, after so long a separation, they had hardly greeted one another, that her first words to him had been a warning of danger. “What has happened?” he asked again. “So many things,” she said heavily. “Terrible things, Richard. Perhaps it was wrong of me to send for you . . . but I couldn’t bear for you to hear it all from the lips of a casual gossip. And I’ve been virtually a prisoner ever since . . . ever since . . .” Her voice broke and Richard reached out a comforting arm which she ignored. “Sit down, dear heart, and I’ll try to tell you everything. You would do well to drink some wine . . . pour for me, too. Richard, the first thing is . . . my father is dead. He died six weeks or more ago, in Compostella.” Richard set back the flagon he had lifted. “My sweet!” he said and, taking both her hands, began to blurt out some muddled words of sympathy. Words never came easily to him, and now shock and bewilderment made him less than usually vocal. Eleanor listened for a moment and then drew away. “Yes, you were fond of him, too; and he of you, Richard. And I’ve hardly had time to realize or grieve for him properly . . .” She steadied herself. “I didn’t send for you to tell you that only, there is so much more to say, and perhaps not much time.” She looked at the barred door, and as Richard began to speak she went on hurriedly, “Let me tell you first about how the news came and then you’ll understand why I am frightened for you”.

Uit: The African Queen

„The mission, to which they had given their lives, could hardly be said to exist, now that Von Hanneken and his troops had descended upon the place and had swept off the entire village, converts and heathen alike, to be sol—diers or bearers in the Army of German Central Africa, which he was assembling. Livestock and poultry, pots and pans and foodstuffs, all had been taken, even the portable chapel, leaving only the mission bungalow standing on the edge of the deserted clearing. So the weakness vanished from SamuelÌs voice as he went on to pray that the awful calamity of war which had descended upon the world would soon pass away, that the slaughter and destruction would cease, and that when they had re—gained their sanity men would turn from war to universal peace. And with the utterance of the last of his petition SamuelÌs voice grew stronger yet, as he prayed that the Almighty would bless the arms of England, and carry her safely through this the severest of all her trials, and would crown her efforts with victory over the godless militarists who had brought about this disaster. There was a ring of fighting spirit in SamuelÌs voice as he said this, and an Old Testament flavour in his speech, as another Samuel had once prayed for victory over the Amalekites. ÏAmen! Amen! Amen!Ó sobbed Rose with her head bowed over her clasped hands. They knelt in silence for a few seconds when the prayer was finished, and then they rose to their feet. There was still just light enough for Rose to see SamuelÌs white—clad figure and his white face as he stood there swaying. She made no move to light the lamp. Now that German Central Africa was in arms against England no one could tell when next they would be able to obtain oil, or matches. They were cut off from all communication with the world save through hostile territory. ÏI think, sister,Ó said Samuel, faintly Ïthat I shall re—tire now.Ó Rose did not help him to undress Ûthey were brother and sister and strictly brought up, and it would have been impossible to her unless he had been quite incapable of helping himself Û but she crept in, in the dark after he was in bed, to see that his mosquito curtains were prop—erly closed round him. ÏGood night, sister,Ó said Samuel. Even in that swel—tering heat his teeth were chattering. She herself went back to her own room and lay on her string bed in a torment of heat, although she wore only her thin nightdress.“

Uit: Goodbye to Berlin

„This morning, as I was walking down the Bülowstrasse, the Nazis were raiding the house of a small liberal pacifist publisher. They had brought a lorry and were piling it with the publisher's books. The driver of the lorry mockingly read out the titles of the books to the crowd:

"Nie Wieder Krieg!" he shouted, holding up one of them by the corner of the cover, disgustedly, as though it were a nasty kind of reptile. Everybody roared with laughter.

"'No More War!'" echoed a fat, well-dressed woman, with a scornful, savage laugh. "What an idea!"

(,,,)

At present, one of my regular pupils is Herr N., a police chief under the Weimar régime. He comes to me every day. He wants to brush up his English, for he is leaving very soon to take up a job in the United States. The curious thing about these lessons is that they are all given while we are driving about the streets in Herr N.'s enormous closed car. Herr N. himself never comes into our house: he sends up his chauffeur to fetch me, and the car moves off at once. Sometimes we stop for a few minutes at the edge of the Tiergarten, and stroll up and down the paths—the chauff eur always following us at a respectful distance.

Herr N. talks to me chiefly about his family. He is worried about his son, who is very delicate, and whom he is obliged to leave behind, to undergo an operation. His wife is delicate, too. He hopes the journey won't tire her. He describes her symptoms, and the kind of medicine she is taking. He tells me stories about his son as a little boy. In a tactful, impersonal way we have become quite intimate. Herr N. is always charmingly polite, and listens gravely and carefully to my explanations of grammatical points. Behind everything he says I am aware of an immense sadness.

We never discuss politics; but I know that Herr N. must be an enemy of the Nazis, and, perhaps, even in hourly danger of arrest. One morning, when we were driving along the Unter den Linden, we passed a group of self-important S.A. men, chatting to each other and blocking the whole pavement. Passers-by were obliged to walk in the gutter. Herr N. smiled faintly and sadly: "One sees some queer sights in the streets nowadays." That was his only comment.

Sometimes he will bend forward to the window and regard a building or a square with a mournful fixity, as if to impress its image upon his memory and to bid it good-bye.“

Dans une fosse comme un ours

Chaque matin je me promène

Tournons tournons tournons toujours

Le ciel est bleu comme une chaîne

Dans une fosse comme un ours

Chaque matin je me promène

Dans la cellule d'à côté

On y fait couler la fontaine

Avec les clefs qu'il fait tinter

Que le geôlier aille et revienne

Dans la cellule d'à côté

On y fait couler la fontaine

V

Que lentement passent les heures

Comme passe un enterrement

Tu pleureras l'heure où tu pleures

Qui passera trop vitement

Comme passent toutes les heures

VI

Man bedauerte.

"That business about progress in art is ancient nonsense," Etienne said, "but in jazz as in any art there's always a flock of fakers. Music that can be translated into emotion is one thing, but emotion which pretends to pass as music is another. Paternal grief in F sharp, sarcastic laughter in yellow, violet and black. No, my boy, it's hard to say where art begins, but it's never that stuff."

No one seemed disposed to contradict him because Wong had quietly appeared with the coffee and Ronald, shrugging his shoulders, had turned loose Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians and after a terrible scratching they reached the theme that fascinated Oliveira, an anonymous trumpet followed by the piano, all wrapped up in the smoke of an old phonograph and a bad recording, of a corny prejazz band, all in all like those old records, showboats, Storyville nights, where the old only really universal music of the century had come from, something that brought people closer together and in a better way than Esperanto, UNESCO, or airlines, a music which was primitve enough to have gained such universality and good enough to make its own history, with schisms, abdications, and heresies, its Charleston, its Black Bottom, its Shimmy, its Fox Trot, its Stomp, its Blues, to label its forms, this style and the other one, swing, bebop, cool, a counterpoint of romanticism and classicism, hot and intellectual jazz, human music, music with a history in contrast to stupid animal dance music, the polka, the waltz, the zamba, a music that could be known in Copenhagen as well as in Mendoza or Cape Town, a music that brings adolescents together, with records under their arms, that gives them names and melodies to use as passwords so they can know each other and become intimate and feel less lonely surrounded by bosses, families, and bitter love affairsm a music that accepts all imaginations and tastes, a collection of instrumental 78's with Freddie Keppard or Bunk Johnson, the reactionary cult of Dixieland, an academic specialization in Bix Beiderbecke, or in the adventures of Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, or Thad Jones, the vulagarities of Erroll Garner or Art Tatum, repentance and rejection, a preference for small groups, mysterious recordings with false names and strange titles and labels made up on the spur of the moment, and that whole freemasonry of Saturday nights in a student's room or in some basement cafe with girls who would rather dance to "Stardust" or "When Your Man Is Going to Put You Down," and have a sweet slow smell of perfume and skin and heat, and let themselves be kissed when the hour is late and somebody has put on the "The Blues With a Feeling" and hardly anybody is really dancing, just standing up together, swaying back and forth, and everything is hazy and dirty and lowdown and every man is stroking shoulders and the girls have their mouths half-opened and turn themselves to delightful fear and the night, taking them with a single hot phrase that drops them like a cut flower into the arms of their partners, and there comes a motionless race, a jump up into the night air, over the city until a miniature piano brings them to again, exhausted, reconciled, and still virgins until next Saturday,…”

In mein Bett hinein. Heijeijei. Was mit meinem Gesicht sei? Heijeijei.

Kein Radio, kein Fernsehapparat.

»Was man erspart an seinem Mund,

„On the sharp turns I probably do not think of the rocking of the truck as it brought back a box from Markirch containing our first corpse. At the time I didn’t even know I was sitting on such sad cargo. But the frigid air would have paralyzed any thought before it could form. No, I most certainly do not think of any of the images that persist in me, tangled and crowded like a withered and moldy bunch of grapes. Through my windshield I watch the strip of smooth asphalt before me and would rather it be some old, buckling, pothole-ridden road leading into the more authentic world of the past. But I can’t deny being spoiled and selfish like any other modern driver accustomed to the comfort of a smooth ride at high speed. I try to visualize a mountain highway in Slovenia comparable to this serpentine road from Schirmeck to Struthof. I picture the switchbacks leading to Vršič—but there the road opens onto a panorama of rocky peaks which is lacking here. The road from Kobarid to Drežnica? That could almost be a match. But then again, not really, because there is no Krn here, with its blinding cliffs. Maybe this road through the Vosges is most like the winding road that rises up out of Kobarid to Vršno. There the forest also gives way now and then to scenic views of the valley below, which never seems that far away. And there are no cliffs, just a constant alternation of dense forest and rolling grassy field. I can’t remember whether the pines on the slopes of Vršno are the same as here. Probably not.“

Daar zitten we.
We
moeten gaan.

we lopen.

POLAROIDS

Since landscape’s insoluble,
Then loath at last light I leave the landfall, soft and gone.
Or it leaves me.
I’ve got a tune in my head I can’t let go,
Unlike the landscape, heavy and wan,
Sunk like a stone in the growing night,
Snuffed in the heart like a candle flame that won’t come back.

Our world is of little moment, of course, but it is our world.
Thus it behooves us to contemplate,
                                                           from time to time,
The weight of glory we should wish reset in our hearts,
About the things which are seen,
and things which are not seen,
That corresponds like to like,
The stone to the dark of the earth, the flame to the star.

                                    _____

Those without stories are preordained to repeat them,
I saw once in the stars.
                                      Unclear who underwrote that,
But since then I’ve seen it everywhere
I’ve looked, staggering
Noon light and night’s meridian wandering wide and the single sky.
And here it is in the meadow grass, a brutish script.

We tend to repeat what we don’t know
Instead of the other way around—
                                                         thus mojo, thus misericordia,
Old cross-work and signature, the catechism in the wind.
We tend to repeat what hurts us, things, and ghosts of things,
The actual green of summer, and summer’s half-truth.
We tend to repeat ourselves.

                                    _____

One longs for order and permanence,
An order as in the night sky just north of Mt. Caribou,
Permanence like the seasons,
                                                coming in, going out,
Watchman and wanderer. There’s been no cure, however, and no
Ecstasy in transcendent form, so
Don’t look for me here, incipient, now, in the artifice.

Florence is much on my mind, gold leaf and golden frame,
Infinite background of the masters—
Mayfire of green in the hills,
                                               watchtower and Belvedere,
The Arno, as Dino said, like a dithering snake,
Sad swipe of forgetfulness.
Last chance, a various universe.

                                    _____

A few more rising and setting suns.
Always the spike of the purple lupin, always the folded hands of the dog rose.
Childhood, gentle monk.
His eye extinguished,
                                   someone’s red-gold heart-mouth has sealed his lips.
No wind in the evergreens, no singer, no lament.
Summer surrounds us, and wordless, O blue cathedral.

A few more sorrowful scenes.
The waters murmur, shadows are moist in the upper meadow.
Silence wide as a wasteland through the black streets of the forest.
Over the white eyelids of the dead,
                                                         white clover is blossoming.
Late snow like a fallen city shimmers the mountain’s riprap and stare.
Unmullioned window, stained light.

                                    _____

The lapis lazuli dragonflies
of postbelief, rising and falling near
The broken slab wood steps, now one by one, now in pairs,
Are not the dragonflies of death with their blue-black eyes.
These are the tiny ones, the stems, the phosphorescent,
Rising and falling like drowned playthings.
They come and they disappear. They come back and they disappear.

Horizon-hump of pine bristles on end toward the south,
Breath-stealer, cloudless drop cloth
Of sky,
the great meadow beneath like a mirror face down in the earth,
Accepting nothing, giving it back.
We’ll go, as Mandelstam tells us, into a growing numbness of time,
Insoluble, as long as landscape, as indistinct.

Uit: The Mahogany Elephant

“He took a new crate of water out of the closet, pushed it straight back in again with his foot, and opened the bottle of wine that had been standing on the kitchen table for the last six weeks. He picked up the glasses and the bottle, and before going back to the living room he took the elephant out of his trouser pocket and threw it in the garbage.

"Jordi," she said, "I didn't want wine."

"No," he agreed, "it's still too early for wine."

"I didn't drink at all while I was there," she said.

"That's a pity," he said.

"No, I don't think so."

"I think it is."

He poured wine first for himself, then for her, and they clinked glasses. She didn't look in his eyes, and she drank only a tiny sip before going into the kitchen to fetch a bottle of water. She sat down on the sofa again, as far from him as she had been just before, and began telling him about her travels — but he was barely listening. While she was away he had kept trying to imagine where she was at any given time, and what it was like there, but now he couldn't care less about India, he just wanted to know what her decision was. Of course, he knew already, but he wanted to hear it from her own mouth. He wanted her to suffer a little, he wanted her to have to say it and feel unhappy about hurting him. No, she would say, we're not going to get married, Jordi, I know that's not what I want now, so we'll never see each other again, the way we agreed.”

Uit: The Pregnant Widow

“Keith would be staying, for the duration of this hot, endless, and erotically decisive summer, in a castle on a mountainside above a village in Campania, in Italy. And now he walked the backstreets of Montale, from car to bar, at dusk, flanked by two twenty-year-old blondes, Lily and Scheherazade . . . Lily: 5' 5", 34-25-34. Scheherazade: 5' 10", 37-23-33. And Keith? Well, he was the same age, and slender (and dark, with a very misleading chin, stubbled, stubborn-looking); and he occupied that much-disputed territory between five foot six and five foot seven.
Vital statistics. The phrase originally referred, in studies of society, to births and marriages and deaths; now it meant bust, waist, hips. In the long days and nights of his early adolescence, Keith showed an abnormal interest in vital statistics; and he used to dream them up for his solitary amusement. Although he could never draw (he was all thumbs with a crayon), he could commit figures to paper, women in outline, rendered numerically. And every possible combination, or at least anything remotely humanoid—35-45-55, for instance, or 60-60-60—seemed well worth thinking about. 46-47-31, 31-47-46: well worth thinking about. But you were always tugged back, somehow, to the archetype of the hourglass, and once you’d run up against (for instance) 97-3-97, there was nowhere new to go; for a contented hour you might stare at the figure eight, upright, and then on its side; until you drowsily resumed your tearful and tender combinations of the thirties, the twenties, the thirties. Mere digits, mere integers. Still, when he was a boy, and he saw vital statistics under the photograph of a singer or a starlet, they seemed garrulously indiscreet, telling him everything he needed to know about what was soon to be. He didn’t want to hug and kiss these women, not yet. He wanted to rescue them. From an island fortress (say) he would rescue them . . .”

Uit: The Day of the Jackal

“The last sentence brought a flicker of expression to the grey eyes. ‘No man in the world is proof against an assassin’s bullet,’ said the Englishman. ‘The point is that the chances of escape would not be too high. A fanatic prepared to die in the attempt is always the most certain method. I notice,’ he added, ‘that despite your idealism you have not yet produced such a man.’
‘There are patriotic Frenchmen prepared—’ Casson began hotly, but Rodin silenced him with a gesture.
‘And as regards a professional?’ prompted Rodin.
‘A professional does not act out of fervour and is therefore more calm. Not being idealistic, he is not likely to have last-minute thoughts about who else might get hurt, and being a professional, he has calculated the risks to the last contingency. So his chances of success on schedule are surer than anyone else’s, but he will not even enter into an operation until he has devised a plan enabling him not only to complete the mission, but to escape unharmed.’
‘Do you estimate that such a plan could be worked out to permit a professional to kill de Gaulle and escape?’
‘In principle, yes,’ the Englishman replied. ‘But it would be one of the hardest jobs in the world. But you did not call me here for a chat about political assassination. You called me here because you have concluded that, since your organisation is infiltrated by the secret service, you must have an outsider. And you are right. The only questions that remain are who, and for how much. Now, gentlemen, I think you have had long enough to examine the merchandise.’
Rodin looked sideways at Montclair and raised an eyebrow. Montclair nodded. Casson followed suit. The Englishman gazed out of the window without a shred of interest.

The Rebels' Conga

Lumumba
Like rumba, conga!
Lumumba
Like rumba, Congo!

In Kin-the-Violent
The hips shake
Though they try to fool them
Down to the belt…
With conga rumba
Congo!

To Kin
Come the blood of strength
Bandolier of the river
Congo!
Like conga
Congo!

The river's got this bridge
For the hands
The river's got this bridge
For the hearts
And he, he is alone.

He flies
From Kin to Kin!
From Kin to Kin,
Down to the blood
He has the sleep
Of those who die
In his ears,
He has the country's insomnia
In his belly
Pitted with grass…

From Kin to Kin!
From Kin to Kin:
Lumumba
Like rumba Congo!
Lumumba
Like rumba conga

What do the rebels search for
In Kin-the-Violent
Women to rape?
No!
Is that all their violence?
Aren't they dancing!

Lumumba, rumba!
Conga!
Like rumba, Congo!

With this rhythm
Is it the clouds that will fall?
Or the lightning storm that will
Burst open the bodies?

A mummy-paleness lingers
And returns to audacity
Blood in the fist
From Kin to Kin.
From Kin to Kin
Like conga Congo!
Where the hips break
Is the Union minière
The rebels' choreograph?
Does one unroot the man
Whose roots are his wounds
In his flesh?

The bazooka opens fire
And that's all
Or here come those who draw water
The women who perpetuate the river's flow
With the thirst of the pounders on their breasts
Clapping their hands:
Lumumba
Like rumba Congo
Lumumba
Like rumba, conga—
From Kin to Kin!
From Kin to Kin
That they die, that they die
as long as they have no grave!

Blowing the quarry
The bitch press of Big Capital
on the Congo
The bitch press of Big Capital
barks
& scrambles for the spoils:
Congo!
Like rumba, conga!
Congo!
The river where the blood of strength
Bandolier of the river
In Kin
Rises.
They throw they throw their garbage
On the human back
That the rebels search for at their head:
Lumumba!
Lumumba
Like rumba, conga

This new source
Bandolier of the river
will link the six provinces
Or else long live the slavery of the Congo

And of that lonely man being drowned
Lumumba
Like rumba, conga
LUMUMBA
Like rumba, Congo!

And that the conga
No longer be a throwing weapon
At the heart of the Union minière.

“He'd brought with him a small Columbian press that had been dumped in its crate outside his tent. Visionary plans for a journal unravelled as his days spent themselves in helping other settlers peg out land, dig storm drains and raise pole frames for the first of the slab-and-tin shanties. More distressing was to watch departing squatters riding north and west to select their kingdoms.

     Should he follow?

At the end of four weeks he managed to bring out a broadsheet, the copy written by candlelight, the type agonisingly hand-set between building bouts in a half-finished shed he had whacked together. The broadsheet was a gossipy farrago of personal encounter and the sort of ferocious political complaint he imagined new settlers expected. He was wrong. They wanted encouragement. They wanted to be amused. His sympathy for the dispossessed blacks infuriated the eighty settlers left in town, and someone threatened to horsewhip him.

Cornelius pulled down his tent, repacked his little press and with the last of his money took passage on a ketch returning to Sydney.

'That's your grandfather, muttonchopped splendid, the cheeky devil,' Jessica Olive had pointed out to four-year-old Connie, who had been nagging for a face, the photograph album dog-eared, pictures spotting with mould from too many Wets, grandfather caught up with after all those years in a magazine clipping of Sydney bohemians her brother had cut out and posted to Jessica Olive when it was too late for forgiveness.

Found! Sprung! The only non stayer, sprung! Aging in Darlinghurst Road, some one-roomer lodging boxed round him, chilling in his underwear, the family all loyally hoped, when the plane trees dropped their leaves down the length of Hyde Park.”

“Ah, well. If it was to be a choice between food and begging them to do the least thing, then give him hunger any day. He ate his egg and toast, drank a second cup of tea and went out into the hall to put his coat on. Sheepskin-lined it was, his pride and joy; thirty guineas it had cost him at Aquascutum.
But she came after him before he could flee the coop. “Now, remember to phone me the minute you pick up the tickets,” she said. “And ask them about the connection from Southampton with the boat train for Dublin. Because I want to put that into my letter to Mother this afternoon.”
“Right, dear.”
“And, by the way, Gerry Grosvenor’s coming in at five. So don’t you be stravaging in at six, do you hear?”
What did she have to ask Gerry Grosvenor up here for? They could have said good-by to Gerry downtown. Didn’t she know damn well he didn’t want people seeing the inside of this place? Flute! His eyes assessed their present surroundings as Gerry Grosvenor’s would. The lower half of a duplex apartment on a shabby Montreal street, dark as limbo, jerry-built fifty years ago and going off keel ever since. The doors did not close, the floors buckled and warped, the walls had been repapered and repainted until they bulged. And would bulge more, for it was a place that people on their way up tried to improve, people on their way down to disguise: all in vain. The hegira of tenants would continue.
Still, what was the use in talking? She had asked Gerry: the harm was done. “All right,” he said. “Give us a kiss now. I’m off.”
She kissed him the way she would a child. “Not that I know what I’m going to give Gerry to drink,” she said. “With only beer in the house.”
“Sure, never mind,” he said and kissed her quick again to shut her up. “So long, now. I’ll be home before five.”
And got away clean”..

Winterdorp

Het is een dorp
Niet ver van hier
Een boerendorp
Aan een rivier
Het is niet groot
En vrij obscuur
Maar 't heeft een naam
En een bestuur
Er is een school
Een harmonie
Een bankfiliaal
Een kerk of drie
Een communist
Een zonderling
En zelfs een zang-
vereniging

Nu is 't er stil
't Is wintertijd

Help mij vergeten

dat we zijn.'

Ik zag ons passie hoesten

krachtig aan het hart voorbij

Voelde de haren op zijn borst

zijn blik veel bloter dan zijn lies

Zijn zorg om niet te zuchten.

't Was echt

zijn maan die over ons gebogen

stond.

Ooit zal wat wij daar proefden

oneindig liever liefde zijn

“It all began sometime in the last century, in an age when lovers wrote letters to each other sealed up in envelopes. Sometimes they used colored inks to show their love, or they perfumed their writing paper with scent.

Darling Ned-

I'm sorry about the smell. I hope you've opened this somewhere private, all on your own. You'll get teased to distraction otherwise. It's called Rive Gauche, so I'm feeling like Simone de Beauvoir and I hope you're feeling like Jean-Paul Sartre. Actually I hope you aren't because I think he was pretty horrid to her. I'm writing this upstairs after a row with Pete and Hillary. Ha, ha, ha! Pete and Hillary, Pete and Hillary, Pete and Hillary. You hate it when I call them that, don't you? I love you so much. If you saw my diary you'd die. I wrote a whole two pages this morning. I drew up a list of everything that's wonderful and glorious about you and one day when we're together forever I might let you look at it and you'll die again.

I wrote that you're old-fashioned.

One: The first time we met, you stood up when I entered the room, which was sweet, but it was the Hard Rock Cafe and I was coming out of the kitchen to take your order.

Two: Every time I refer to my mum and dad as Pete and Hillary, you go pink and tighten your lips.

Three: When you first talked to Pete and---all right, I'll let you off---when you first talked to Mum and Dad, you let them go on and on about private education and private health and how terrible it was and how evil the government is and you never said a word. About your dad being a Tory MP, I mean. You talked beautifully about the weather and incomprehensibly about cricket. But you never let on.

That's what the row today was about, in fact. Your dad was on Weekend World at lunchtime, you prolly saw him. (I love you, by the way. God, I love you so much.)”

We are the time. We are the famous

We are the time. We are the famous
metaphor from Heraclitus the Obscure.

We are the water, not the hard diamond,
the one that is lost, not the one that stands still.

We are the river and we are that greek
that looks himself into the river. His reflection
changes into the waters of the changing mirror,
into the crystal that changes like the fire.

We are the vain predetermined river,
in his travel to his sea.

The shadows have surrounded him.
Everything said goodbye to us, everything goes away.

Memory does not stamp his own coin.

However, there is something that stays
however, there is something that bemoans.

Adam Cast Forth

Was there a Garden or was the Garden a dream?
Amid the fleeting light, I have slowed myself and queried,
Almost for consolation, if the bygone period
Over which this Adam, wretched now, once reigned supreme,

Might not have been just a magical illusion
Of that God I dreamed. Already it's imprecise
In my memory, the clear Paradise,
But I know it exists, in flower and profusion,

Although not for me. My punishment for life
Is the stubborn earth with the incestuous strife
Of Cains and Abels and their brood; I await no pardon.

Yet, it's much to have loved, to have known true joy,
To have had -- if only for just one day --
The experience of touching the living Garden.

Uit: The Children’s Book

“Two boys stood in the Prince Consort Gallery, and looked down on a third. It was June 19th, 1895. The Prince had died in 1861, and had seen only the beginnings of his ambitious project for a gathering of museums in which the British craftsmen could study the best examples of design. His portrait, modest and medalled, was done inmosaic in the tympanum of a decorative arch at one end of the narrowgallery which ran above the space of the South Court. The South Court was decorated with further mosaics, portraits of painters, sculptors, potters, the "Kensington Valhalla." The third boy was squatting beside one of a series of imposing glass cases displaying gold and silver treasures. Tom, the younger of the two looking down, thought of Snow White in her glass coffin. He thought also, looking up at Albert, that the vessels and spoons and caskets, gleaming in the liquid light under the glass, were like a resurrected kingly burial hoard. (Which, indeed, some of them were.) They could not see the other boy clearly, because he was on the far side of a case. He appeared to be sketching its contents.

Julian Cain was at home in the South Kensington Museum. His father, Major Prosper Cain, was Special Keeper of Precious Metals.

Julian was just fifteen, and a boarder at Marlowe School, but was home recovering from a nasty bout of jaundice. He was neither tall nor short, slightly built, with a sharp face and a sallow complexion, even without the jaundice. He wore his straight black hair parted in the centre, and was dressed in a school suit. Tom Wellwood, boyish in Norfolk jacket and breeches, was about two years younger, and looked younger than he was, with large dark eyes, a soft mouth and a smooth head of dark gold hair. The two had not met before. Tom's mother was visiting Julian's father, to ask for help with her research. She was a successful authoress of magical tales. Julian had been deputed to show Tom the treasures. He appeared to be more interested in showing him the squatting boy.”

Uit: The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency

“Mma Ramotswe had a detective agency in Africa, at the foot of Kgale Hill. These were its assets: a tiny white van, two desks, two chairs, a telephone, and an old typewriter. Then there was a teapot, in which Mma Ramotswe--the only lady private detective in Botswana--brewed redbush tea. And three mugs--one for herself, one for her secretary, and one for the client. What else does a detective agency really need? Detective agencies rely on human intuition and intelligence, both of which Mma Ramotswe had in abundance. No inventory would ever include those, of course.
But there was also the view, which again could appear on no inventory. How could any such list describe what one saw when one looked out from Mma Ramotswe's door? To the front, an acacia tree, the thorn tree which dots the wide edges of the Kalahari; the great white thorns, a warning; the olive-grey leaves, by contrast, so delicate. In its branches, in the late afternoon, or in the cool of the early morning, one might see a Go-Away Bird, or hear it, rather. And beyond the acacia, over the dusty road, the roofs of the town under a cover of trees and scrub bush; on the horizon, in a blue shimmer of heat, the hills, like improbable, overgrown termite mounds.
Everybody called her Mma Ramotswe, although if people had wanted to be formal, they would have addressed her as Mme Mma Ramotswe. This is the right thing for a person of stature, but which she had never used of herself. So it was always Mma Ramotswe, rather than Precious Ramotswe, a name which very few people employed.”

Uit: The Zahir

"I walk through the skeleton of the cathedral, studying the restoration work currently being carried out: this time the architects guarantee that they have found the perfect solution. Everywhere there are metal supports, scaffolding, grand theories about what to do next, and some criticism about what was done in the past.

"And suddenly, in the middle of the central nave, I realize something very important: the cathedral is me, it is all of us. We that need to be corrected, we don't always choose the best solution, but we carry on regardless, trying to remain upright and decent, in order to do honor not to the walls or the doors or the windows, but to the empty space inside, the place where we worship and venerate what is dearest and most important to us.

"Yes, we are all cathedrals, there is no doubt about it; but what lies in the empty space of my inner cathedral?

"Esther, the Zahir.

"She fills everything. She is the only reason I am alive. I look around, I prepare myself for the talk I am to give, and I understand why I braved the snow, the traffic jams, and the ice on the roads: in order to be reminded that every day I need to rebuild myself and to accept — for the first time in my entire existence — that I love another human being more than I love myself.”

Uit: Der entfesselte Globus

“Bombay. Juni 2006

Uit: The Wrong Boy

“And everybody in the classroom started laughing, even the teacher!

But I don't care about them now. I don't care about Spegga Spanswick and Barry Tucknott and Mustapha Golightly and all that lot. Hilarious bastards! Because I'm grateful really. It was because of people like Steven Spanswick and Jackson and all those other pathetic persons that I wrote my first ever lyric. It was called 'I Don't Care'.

I don't care
If you pull my hair
I don't care if you laugh at me
I don't care
If you point and stare
I don't care if you throw crap at me
I don't care
If you strip me bare
I don't care if you say I'm fat
I don't care
If you rob my share
I don't care if you call me twat
I don't care
I don't care
I don't care
Because I'm not there.

Looking back on it now it seems deadeningly didactic and somewhat simplistic. In fact it's highly embarrassing, predictable and derivative. But every artist has to start somewhere and the important thing is that despite what my lyrics were like, I had at least started writing them. Oh shit, what's the Greasy-Gobbed Get saying to me now . . . ?

Later,
The Back of a Carpet-Fitters'
Van
Somewhere in the Pennine Chain
(Apparently)

Dear Morrissey,

I'm still dying of embarrassment. I couldn't get out of that service station fast enough. These carpet fitters are headed for Halifax and they said they'd drop me there. I don't even know if Halifax is on the way but I would have accepted a lift to anywhere just to get out of that service station.

I'm glad that at least it happened in such a transient sort of environment and so hopefully I'll never have to see her again!”

So weit, so gut.

A New Song to an Old Tune

SONS of Shannon, Tamar, Trent,

Men of the Lothians, Men of Kent,

Essex, Wessex, shore and shire,

Mates of the net, the mine, the fire,

Lads of the wheel and desk and loom,

Noble and trader, squire and groom,

Come where the bugles of England play,

'Over the hills and far away!'

Southern Cross and Polar Star --

Here are the Britons bred afar;

Serry, O serry them, fierce and keen,

Under the flag of the Empress-Queen;

Shoulder to shoulder down the track,

Where, to the unretreating Jack,

The victor bugles of England play,

'Over the hills and far away!'

What if the best of our wages be

An empty sleeve, a stiff-set knee,

A crutch for the rest of life -- who cares,

So long as the One Flag floats and dares?

So long as the One Race dares and grows?

Death -- what is death but God's own rose?

Let but the bugles of England play,

'Over the hills and far away!'

A Child

A child,

Curious and innocent,

Slips from his Nurse, and rejoicing

Loses himself in the Fair.

Thro' the jostle and din

Wandering, he revels,

Dreaming, desiring, possessing;

Till, of a sudden

Tired and afraid, he beholds

The sordid assemblage

Just as it is; and he runs

With a sob to his Nurse

(Lighting at last on him),

And in her motherly bosom

Cries him to sleep.

Thus thro' the World,

Seeing and feeling and knowing,

Goes Man: till at last,

Tired of experience, he turns

To the friendly and comforting breast

Of the old nurse, Death.

The Unknown

Ye aspiring ones, listen to the story of the unknown
Who lies here with no stone to mark the place.
As a boy reckless and wanton,
Wandering with gun in hand through the forest
Near the mansion of Aaron Hatfield,
I shot a hawk perched on the top
Of a dead tree.
He fell with guttural cry
At my feet, his wing broken.
Then I put him in a cage
Where he lived many days cawing angrily at me
When I offered him food.
Daily I search the realms of Hades
For the soul of the hawk,
That I may offer him the friendship
Of one whom life wounded and caged.

Raamgedicht

Ik heb de Zaan nog nooit bezongen
Die nauwelijks stromende rivier
Waar ik voor in zwom als jongen
Tussen de IJsberen en 't wier
Ik stak haar over met het pontje
Ik heb haar dikwijls overbrugd
Jarenlang hetzelfde rondje

Ik zag haar water even branden

O Zaan mijn jeugd is mijn lievelingsrivier

Kinkerstraatjes lopen samen

Kinkerstraatjes lopen samen
meestal door de Kinkerstraat

en hun geblondeerde haren
zijn als de manen van een paard

Kinkerstraatjes hebben witte
tanden en ze blijven altijd jong

want ze hebben niets om handen
Kinkerstraatjes zijn niet dom

en hun dochter is hun alles
met hun moeder zijn ze rijk

meestal in de straat van Kinker
en soms op de Haarlemmerdijk

Onbekommerd toont Amsterdam...

Onbekommerd toont Amsterdam
haar rotte gebit, haar aan aardgas
stervende bomen, haar onrein water
waarin de zon zich weerkaatst.
Uit ontelbare vervuilde neusgaten
blaast ze kwaadsappige dampen
over haar daken vol televisie-antennes
en duiven, waarboven de hemel
licht wordt en weer donker, sterren
balanceren een paar minuten op de spits
van een kerktoren, carillons
mengen hun valse stemmen in
de oorverdovende musique concrète
van auto's, ambulances, pneumatische
boren, sloophamers, hei-installaties
en overal kruipen mensen in en uit
de schulp van hun huis, hun krot,
hun dierbare, gehate puinhoop.
