The Rebels' Conga

Lumumba
Like rumba, conga!
Lumumba
Like rumba, Congo!

In Kin-the-Violent
The hips shake
Though they try to fool them
Down to the belt…
With conga rumba
Congo!

To Kin
Come the blood of strength
Bandolier of the river
Congo!
Like conga
Congo!

The river's got this bridge
For the hands
The river's got this bridge
For the hearts
And he, he is alone.

He flies
From Kin to Kin!
From Kin to Kin,
Down to the blood
He has the sleep
Of those who die
In his ears,
He has the country's insomnia
In his belly
Pitted with grass…

From Kin to Kin!
From Kin to Kin:
Lumumba
Like rumba Congo!
Lumumba
Like rumba conga

What do the rebels search for
In Kin-the-Violent
Women to rape?
No!
Is that all their violence?
Aren't they dancing!

Lumumba, rumba!
Conga!
Like rumba, Congo!

With this rhythm
Is it the clouds that will fall?
Or the lightning storm that will
Burst open the bodies?

A mummy-paleness lingers
And returns to audacity
Blood in the fist
From Kin to Kin.
From Kin to Kin
Like conga Congo!
Where the hips break
Is the Union minière
The rebels' choreograph?
Does one unroot the man
Whose roots are his wounds
In his flesh?

The bazooka opens fire
And that's all
Or here come those who draw water
The women who perpetuate the river's flow
With the thirst of the pounders on their breasts
Clapping their hands:
Lumumba
Like rumba Congo
Lumumba
Like rumba, conga—
From Kin to Kin!
From Kin to Kin
That they die, that they die
as long as they have no grave!

Blowing the quarry
The bitch press of Big Capital
on the Congo
The bitch press of Big Capital
barks
& scrambles for the spoils:
Congo!
Like rumba, conga!
Congo!
The river where the blood of strength
Bandolier of the river
In Kin
Rises.
They throw they throw their garbage
On the human back
That the rebels search for at their head:
Lumumba!
Lumumba
Like rumba, conga

This new source
Bandolier of the river
will link the six provinces
Or else long live the slavery of the Congo

And of that lonely man being drowned
Lumumba
Like rumba, conga
LUMUMBA
Like rumba, Congo!

And that the conga
No longer be a throwing weapon
At the heart of the Union minière.

Uit: It's Raining in Mango

“He'd brought with him a small Columbian press that had been dumped in its crate outside his tent. Visionary plans for a journal unravelled as his days spent themselves in helping other settlers peg out land, dig storm drains and raise pole frames for the first of the slab-and-tin shanties. More distressing was to watch departing squatters riding north and west to select their kingdoms.

     Should he follow?

At the end of four weeks he managed to bring out a broadsheet, the copy written by candlelight, the type agonisingly hand-set between building bouts in a half-finished shed he had whacked together. The broadsheet was a gossipy farrago of personal encounter and the sort of ferocious political complaint he imagined new settlers expected. He was wrong. They wanted encouragement. They wanted to be amused. His sympathy for the dispossessed blacks infuriated the eighty settlers left in town, and someone threatened to horsewhip him.

Cornelius pulled down his tent, repacked his little press and with the last of his money took passage on a ketch returning to Sydney.

'That's your grandfather, muttonchopped splendid, the cheeky devil,' Jessica Olive had pointed out to four-year-old Connie, who had been nagging for a face, the photograph album dog-eared, pictures spotting with mould from too many Wets, grandfather caught up with after all those years in a magazine clipping of Sydney bohemians her brother had cut out and posted to Jessica Olive when it was too late for forgiveness.

Found! Sprung! The only non stayer, sprung! Aging in Darlinghurst Road, some one-roomer lodging boxed round him, chilling in his underwear, the family all loyally hoped, when the plane trees dropped their leaves down the length of Hyde Park.”

Uit: The Luck of Ginger Coffey

“Ah, well. If it was to be a choice between food and begging them to do the least thing, then give him hunger any day. He ate his egg and toast, drank a second cup of tea and went out into the hall to put his coat on. Sheepskin-lined it was, his pride and joy; thirty guineas it had cost him at Aquascutum.
But she came after him before he could flee the coop. “Now, remember to phone me the minute you pick up the tickets,” she said. “And ask them about the connection from Southampton with the boat train for Dublin. Because I want to put that into my letter to Mother this afternoon.”
“Right, dear.”
“And, by the way, Gerry Grosvenor’s coming in at five. So don’t you be stravaging in at six, do you hear?”
What did she have to ask Gerry Grosvenor up here for? They could have said good-by to Gerry downtown. Didn’t she know damn well he didn’t want people seeing the inside of this place? Flute! His eyes assessed their present surroundings as Gerry Grosvenor’s would. The lower half of a duplex apartment on a shabby Montreal street, dark as limbo, jerry-built fifty years ago and going off keel ever since. The doors did not close, the floors buckled and warped, the walls had been repapered and repainted until they bulged. And would bulge more, for it was a place that people on their way up tried to improve, people on their way down to disguise: all in vain. The hegira of tenants would continue.
Still, what was the use in talking? She had asked Gerry: the harm was done. “All right,” he said. “Give us a kiss now. I’m off.”
She kissed him the way she would a child. “Not that I know what I’m going to give Gerry to drink,” she said. “With only beer in the house.”
“Sure, never mind,” he said and kissed her quick again to shut her up. “So long, now. I’ll be home before five.”
And got away clean”..

Winterdorp

Het is een dorp
Niet ver van hier
Een boerendorp
Aan een rivier
Het is niet groot
En vrij obscuur
Maar 't heeft een naam
En een bestuur
Er is een school
Een harmonie
Een bankfiliaal
Een kerk of drie
Een communist
Een zonderling
En zelfs een zang-
vereniging

Nu is 't er stil
't Is wintertijd

Help mij vergeten

dat we zijn.'

Ik zag ons passie hoesten

krachtig aan het hart voorbij

Voelde de haren op zijn borst

zijn blik veel bloter dan zijn lies

Zijn zorg om niet te zuchten.

't Was echt

zijn maan die over ons gebogen

stond.

Ooit zal wat wij daar proefden

oneindig liever liefde zijn

Uit: Revenge

“It all began sometime in the last century, in an age when lovers wrote letters to each other sealed up in envelopes. Sometimes they used colored inks to show their love, or they perfumed their writing paper with scent.

41 Plough Lane,

Hampstead,

Monday, June 2nd 1980

Darling Ned-

I'm sorry about the smell. I hope you've opened this somewhere private, all on your own. You'll get teased to distraction otherwise. It's called Rive Gauche, so I'm feeling like Simone de Beauvoir and I hope you're feeling like Jean-Paul Sartre. Actually I hope you aren't because I think he was pretty horrid to her. I'm writing this upstairs after a row with Pete and Hillary. Ha, ha, ha! Pete and Hillary, Pete and Hillary, Pete and Hillary. You hate it when I call them that, don't you? I love you so much. If you saw my diary you'd die. I wrote a whole two pages this morning. I drew up a list of everything that's wonderful and glorious about you and one day when we're together forever I might let you look at it and you'll die again.

I wrote that you're old-fashioned.

One: The first time we met, you stood up when I entered the room, which was sweet, but it was the Hard Rock Cafe and I was coming out of the kitchen to take your order.

Two: Every time I refer to my mum and dad as Pete and Hillary, you go pink and tighten your lips.

Three: When you first talked to Pete and---all right, I'll let you off---when you first talked to Mum and Dad, you let them go on and on about private education and private health and how terrible it was and how evil the government is and you never said a word. About your dad being a Tory MP, I mean. You talked beautifully about the weather and incomprehensibly about cricket. But you never let on.

That's what the row today was about, in fact. Your dad was on Weekend World at lunchtime, you prolly saw him. (I love you, by the way. God, I love you so much.)”

We are the time. We are the famous

We are the time. We are the famous
metaphor from Heraclitus the Obscure.

We are the water, not the hard diamond,
the one that is lost, not the one that stands still.

We are the river and we are that greek
that looks himself into the river. His reflection
changes into the waters of the changing mirror,
into the crystal that changes like the fire.

We are the vain predetermined river,
in his travel to his sea.

The shadows have surrounded him.
Everything said goodbye to us, everything goes away.

Memory does not stamp his own coin.

However, there is something that stays
however, there is something that bemoans.

Adam Cast Forth

Was there a Garden or was the Garden a dream?
Amid the fleeting light, I have slowed myself and queried,
Almost for consolation, if the bygone period
Over which this Adam, wretched now, once reigned supreme,

Might not have been just a magical illusion
Of that God I dreamed. Already it's imprecise
In my memory, the clear Paradise,
But I know it exists, in flower and profusion,

Although not for me. My punishment for life
Is the stubborn earth with the incestuous strife
Of Cains and Abels and their brood; I await no pardon.

Yet, it's much to have loved, to have known true joy,
To have had -- if only for just one day --
The experience of touching the living Garden.

Uit: The Children’s Book

“Two boys stood in the Prince Consort Gallery, and looked down on a third. It was June 19th, 1895. The Prince had died in 1861, and had seen only the beginnings of his ambitious project for a gathering of museums in which the British craftsmen could study the best examples of design. His portrait, modest and medalled, was done inmosaic in the tympanum of a decorative arch at one end of the narrowgallery which ran above the space of the South Court. The South Court was decorated with further mosaics, portraits of painters, sculptors, potters, the "Kensington Valhalla." The third boy was squatting beside one of a series of imposing glass cases displaying gold and silver treasures. Tom, the younger of the two looking down, thought of Snow White in her glass coffin. He thought also, looking up at Albert, that the vessels and spoons and caskets, gleaming in the liquid light under the glass, were like a resurrected kingly burial hoard. (Which, indeed, some of them were.) They could not see the other boy clearly, because he was on the far side of a case. He appeared to be sketching its contents.

Julian Cain was at home in the South Kensington Museum. His father, Major Prosper Cain, was Special Keeper of Precious Metals.

Julian was just fifteen, and a boarder at Marlowe School, but was home recovering from a nasty bout of jaundice. He was neither tall nor short, slightly built, with a sharp face and a sallow complexion, even without the jaundice. He wore his straight black hair parted in the centre, and was dressed in a school suit. Tom Wellwood, boyish in Norfolk jacket and breeches, was about two years younger, and looked younger than he was, with large dark eyes, a soft mouth and a smooth head of dark gold hair. The two had not met before. Tom's mother was visiting Julian's father, to ask for help with her research. She was a successful authoress of magical tales. Julian had been deputed to show Tom the treasures. He appeared to be more interested in showing him the squatting boy.”

Uit: The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency

“Mma Ramotswe had a detective agency in Africa, at the foot of Kgale Hill. These were its assets: a tiny white van, two desks, two chairs, a telephone, and an old typewriter. Then there was a teapot, in which Mma Ramotswe--the only lady private detective in Botswana--brewed redbush tea. And three mugs--one for herself, one for her secretary, and one for the client. What else does a detective agency really need? Detective agencies rely on human intuition and intelligence, both of which Mma Ramotswe had in abundance. No inventory would ever include those, of course.
But there was also the view, which again could appear on no inventory. How could any such list describe what one saw when one looked out from Mma Ramotswe's door? To the front, an acacia tree, the thorn tree which dots the wide edges of the Kalahari; the great white thorns, a warning; the olive-grey leaves, by contrast, so delicate. In its branches, in the late afternoon, or in the cool of the early morning, one might see a Go-Away Bird, or hear it, rather. And beyond the acacia, over the dusty road, the roofs of the town under a cover of trees and scrub bush; on the horizon, in a blue shimmer of heat, the hills, like improbable, overgrown termite mounds.
Everybody called her Mma Ramotswe, although if people had wanted to be formal, they would have addressed her as Mme Mma Ramotswe. This is the right thing for a person of stature, but which she had never used of herself. So it was always Mma Ramotswe, rather than Precious Ramotswe, a name which very few people employed.”

Uit: The Zahir

"I walk through the skeleton of the cathedral, studying the restoration work currently being carried out: this time the architects guarantee that they have found the perfect solution. Everywhere there are metal supports, scaffolding, grand theories about what to do next, and some criticism about what was done in the past.

"And suddenly, in the middle of the central nave, I realize something very important: the cathedral is me, it is all of us. We that need to be corrected, we don't always choose the best solution, but we carry on regardless, trying to remain upright and decent, in order to do honor not to the walls or the doors or the windows, but to the empty space inside, the place where we worship and venerate what is dearest and most important to us.

"Yes, we are all cathedrals, there is no doubt about it; but what lies in the empty space of my inner cathedral?

"Esther, the Zahir.

"She fills everything. She is the only reason I am alive. I look around, I prepare myself for the talk I am to give, and I understand why I braved the snow, the traffic jams, and the ice on the roads: in order to be reminded that every day I need to rebuild myself and to accept — for the first time in my entire existence — that I love another human being more than I love myself.”

Uit: Der entfesselte Globus

“Bombay. Juni 2006

Uit: The Wrong Boy

“And everybody in the classroom started laughing, even the teacher!

But I don't care about them now. I don't care about Spegga Spanswick and Barry Tucknott and Mustapha Golightly and all that lot. Hilarious bastards! Because I'm grateful really. It was because of people like Steven Spanswick and Jackson and all those other pathetic persons that I wrote my first ever lyric. It was called 'I Don't Care'.

I don't care
If you pull my hair
I don't care if you laugh at me
I don't care
If you point and stare
I don't care if you throw crap at me
I don't care
If you strip me bare
I don't care if you say I'm fat
I don't care
If you rob my share
I don't care if you call me twat
I don't care
I don't care
I don't care
Because I'm not there.

Looking back on it now it seems deadeningly didactic and somewhat simplistic. In fact it's highly embarrassing, predictable and derivative. But every artist has to start somewhere and the important thing is that despite what my lyrics were like, I had at least started writing them. Oh shit, what's the Greasy-Gobbed Get saying to me now . . . ?

Later,
The Back of a Carpet-Fitters'
Van
Somewhere in the Pennine Chain
(Apparently)

Dear Morrissey,

I'm still dying of embarrassment. I couldn't get out of that service station fast enough. These carpet fitters are headed for Halifax and they said they'd drop me there. I don't even know if Halifax is on the way but I would have accepted a lift to anywhere just to get out of that service station.

I'm glad that at least it happened in such a transient sort of environment and so hopefully I'll never have to see her again!”

So weit, so gut.

A New Song to an Old Tune

SONS of Shannon, Tamar, Trent,

Men of the Lothians, Men of Kent,

Essex, Wessex, shore and shire,

Mates of the net, the mine, the fire,

Lads of the wheel and desk and loom,

Noble and trader, squire and groom,

Come where the bugles of England play,

'Over the hills and far away!'

Southern Cross and Polar Star --

Here are the Britons bred afar;

Serry, O serry them, fierce and keen,

Under the flag of the Empress-Queen;

Shoulder to shoulder down the track,

Where, to the unretreating Jack,

The victor bugles of England play,

'Over the hills and far away!'

What if the best of our wages be

An empty sleeve, a stiff-set knee,

A crutch for the rest of life -- who cares,

So long as the One Flag floats and dares?

So long as the One Race dares and grows?

Death -- what is death but God's own rose?

Let but the bugles of England play,

'Over the hills and far away!'

A Child

A child,

Curious and innocent,

Slips from his Nurse, and rejoicing

Loses himself in the Fair.

Thro' the jostle and din

Wandering, he revels,

Dreaming, desiring, possessing;

Till, of a sudden

Tired and afraid, he beholds

The sordid assemblage

Just as it is; and he runs

With a sob to his Nurse

(Lighting at last on him),

And in her motherly bosom

Cries him to sleep.

Thus thro' the World,

Seeing and feeling and knowing,

Goes Man: till at last,

Tired of experience, he turns

To the friendly and comforting breast

Of the old nurse, Death.

The Unknown

Ye aspiring ones, listen to the story of the unknown
Who lies here with no stone to mark the place.
As a boy reckless and wanton,
Wandering with gun in hand through the forest
Near the mansion of Aaron Hatfield,
I shot a hawk perched on the top
Of a dead tree.
He fell with guttural cry
At my feet, his wing broken.
Then I put him in a cage
Where he lived many days cawing angrily at me
When I offered him food.
Daily I search the realms of Hades
For the soul of the hawk,
That I may offer him the friendship
Of one whom life wounded and caged.

Raamgedicht

Ik heb de Zaan nog nooit bezongen
Die nauwelijks stromende rivier
Waar ik voor in zwom als jongen
Tussen de IJsberen en 't wier
Ik stak haar over met het pontje
Ik heb haar dikwijls overbrugd
Jarenlang hetzelfde rondje

Ik zag haar water even branden

O Zaan mijn jeugd is mijn lievelingsrivier

Kinkerstraatjes lopen samen

Kinkerstraatjes lopen samen
meestal door de Kinkerstraat

en hun geblondeerde haren
zijn als de manen van een paard

Kinkerstraatjes hebben witte
tanden en ze blijven altijd jong

want ze hebben niets om handen
Kinkerstraatjes zijn niet dom

en hun dochter is hun alles
met hun moeder zijn ze rijk

meestal in de straat van Kinker
en soms op de Haarlemmerdijk

Onbekommerd toont Amsterdam...

Onbekommerd toont Amsterdam
haar rotte gebit, haar aan aardgas
stervende bomen, haar onrein water
waarin de zon zich weerkaatst.
Uit ontelbare vervuilde neusgaten
blaast ze kwaadsappige dampen
over haar daken vol televisie-antennes
en duiven, waarboven de hemel
licht wordt en weer donker, sterren
balanceren een paar minuten op de spits
van een kerktoren, carillons
mengen hun valse stemmen in
de oorverdovende musique concrète
van auto's, ambulances, pneumatische
boren, sloophamers, hei-installaties
en overal kruipen mensen in en uit
de schulp van hun huis, hun krot,
hun dierbare, gehate puinhoop.

Uit The Old Ace in The Hole

“Irrigated circles of winter wheat, dotted with stocker calves, grew on land as level as a runway. In other fields tractors lashed tails of dust. He noticed the habit of slower drivers to pull into the breakdown lane -- here called the "courtesy lane" -- and wave him on.

Ahead cities loomed, but as he came close the skyscrapers, mosques and spires metamorphosed into grain elevators, water towers and storage bins. The elevators were the tallest buildings on the plains, symmetrical, their thrusting shapes seeming to entrap kinetic energy. After a while Bob noticed their vertical rhythm, for they rose up regularly every five or ten miles in trackside towns. Most were concrete cylinders, some brick or tile, but at many sidings the old wood elevators, peeling and shabby, still stood, some surfaced with asbestos shingles, a few with rusted metal loosened by the wind. Rectilinear streets joined at ninety-degree angles. Every town had a motto: "The Town Where No One Wears a Frown"; "The Richest Land and the Finest People"; "10,000 Friendly People and One or Two Old Grumps." He passed the Kar-Vu Drive-In, a midtown plywood Jesus, dead cows by the side of the road, legs stiff as two-by-fours, waiting for the renderer's truck. There were nodding pump jacks and pivot irrigation rigs (one still decked out in Christmas lights) to the left and right, condensation tanks and complex assemblies of pipes and gauges, though such was the size of the landscape and their random placement that they seemed metal trinkets strewn by a vast and careless hand. Orange-and-yellow signs marked the existence of underground pipelines, for beneath the fields and pastures lay an invisible world of pipes, cables, boreholes, pumps and extraction devices, forming, with the surface fences and roads, a monstrous three-dimensional grid. This grid extended into the sky through contrails and invisible satellite transmissions. At the edge of fields he noticed brightly painted V-8 diesel engines (most converted to natural gas), pumping up water from the Ogallala aquifer below. And he passed scores of anonymous, low, grey buildings with enormous fans at their ends set back from the road and surrounded by chain-link fence. From the air these guarded hog farms resembled strange grand pianos with six or ten white keys, the trapezoid shape of the body the effluent lagoon in the rear”.

Ballade Of A Great Weariness

There's little to have but the things I had,

There's little to bear but the things I bore.

There's nothing to carry and naught to add,

And glory to Heaven, I paid the score.

There's little to do but I did before,

There's little to learn but the things I know;

And this is the sum of a lasting lore:

Scratch a lover, and find a foe.

And couldn't it be I was young and mad

If ever my heart on my sleeve I wore?

There's many to claw at a heart unclad,

And little the wonder it ripped and tore.

There's one that'll join in their push and roar,

With stories to jabber, and stones to throw;

He'll fetch you a lesson that costs you sore:

Scratch a lover, and find a foe.

So little I'll offer to you, my lad;

It's little in loving I set my store.

There's many a maid would be flushed and glad,

And better you'll knock at a kindlier door.

I'll dig at my lettuce, and sweep my floor,

Forever, forever I'm done with woe.

And happen I'll whistle about my chore,

"Scratch a lover, and find a foe."

L'ENVOI

Oh, beggar or prince, no more, no more!

Be off and away with your strut and show.

The sweeter the apple, the blacker the core:

Scratch a lover, and find a foe!

Wij zouden gaan wonen in schoonheid

Wij zouden gaan wonen in schoonheid
in augustusland past.
Zwerven zouden wij door wat ons langzaam
en dagelijks overstijgt, seizoenen,
de ochtend eten, drinken, jeugdig en rijp.
En ten slotte zouden we de boel

Sigurd der Jerusalemfahrer
Sigurd Jorsalafar

-  "O heilger Olav, sei Sigurd mild,

zonverlichte huizen.

Ik wandel met mijn vader,

maar midden op de brug moet hij

even stilstaan.

Zijn hartslag doet mij schrikken;

wij spreken niet van doodgaan

maar van een afgebroken kinderziekenhuis,

een etherslaap die langer dan het leven

duurde.

Winter

De vogels in de stad verkolen:

avondlicht daalt neer over

de tuinen waarin zij geluidloos

zullen overnachten.

Vroeger heb ik ook in tuinen willen

slapen, met mijn vader kijken

naar de sterren van een wintermaand.

In de stad opent de nacht als

een oude vrouwenmond; lantarens

geven amper licht, mijn vader zwijgt.

De tuinen van de stad vriezen opnieuw

dicht.

 Uit: Bay of Souls

“Sending Paul to St. Emmerich’s meant laughing away the horror stories they liked to tell about their own religious education in the hope of winning a few wholesome apparent certainties for the next generation.
"I was fourteen before my father took me hunting," Michael said. "I think that’s the right age."
"You said kids do everything sooner."
"I didn’t say I thought kids doing everything sooner was a good idea."
"You don’t even like to hunt," Paul said. "You don’t believe in it."
"Really? And what makes us think that?"
"Well, I’ve heard you with Mom. You, like, agree with her it’s cruel and stuff."
"I don’t agree with her. I understand her position. Anyway, if I didn’t believe in it why should I take a tender runt like you?"
Paul was immune to his father’s goading. He went for the substance.
"Because I really believe in it."
"Oh yes? You believe in whacking innocent creatures?"
"You know what?" Paul asked. "This was a Christian Ethics topic. Hunting was. And I was like pro — in favor. Because Genesis says ‘dominion over beasts.’ If you eat the meat it’s OK. And we do."
"You don’t."
"Yes I do," Paul said. "I eat venison kielbasa."
Michael loomed over him and with his left hand put out the lamp on the bed table.
"’Tis blasphemy to vent thy rage against a dumb brute," he informed Paul. He had been teaching Moby-Dick with his favorite assistant, a very pretty South Dakota girl named Phyllis Strom. "Now good night. I don’t want you to read too late."
"Why? I’m not going anywhere."
"Maybe next year," Michael said.
"Sure, Dad," said Paul.
He left the bedroom door its customary inch ajar and went downstairs to the study where his wife was grading Chaucer papers.
"Did he beg and plead?" she asked, looking up.
"I don’t think he’s absolutely sure if he wants to go or not. He takes a pro-hunting position."

The Ivory Piece

A fragment of verse

Carelessly coiffed, with sash half slipping down
Cravat mis-tied, and tassels left to stream,
I walked haphazard through the early town,
Teased with the memory of a charming dream.

I recollected a great room. The day,
Half dead, lit faintly on the walls the pale
And sudden eyes that showed the formal play
Of woven actors in some curious tale.

In fabulous gardens, where romantic trees
Perched on the branches birds without a name.

Na also.

"Gut, dann melde dich beim Stallmeister."
Ansgar stieg das Blut in die Wangen. "Wirklich?
Keine Antwort.

A Toast to the Men

Here's to the men! Since Adam's time

They've always been the same;

Whenever anything goes wrong,

The woman is to blame.

From early morn to late at night,

The men fault-finders are;

They blame us if they oversleep,

Or if they miss a car.

They blame us if, beneath the bed,

Their collar buttons roll;

They blame us if the fire is out

Or if there is no coal.

They blame us if they cut themselves

While shaving, and they swear

That we're to blame if they decide

To go upon a tear.

Here's to the men, the perfect men!

Who never are at fault;

They blame us if they chance to get

The pepper for the salt.

They blame us if their business fails,

Or back a losing horse;

And when it rains on holidays

The fault is ours, of course.

They blame us when they fall in love,

And when they married get;

Likewise they blame us when they're sick,

And when they fall in debt.

For everything that crisscross goes

They say we are to blame;

But, after all, here's to the men,

We love them just the same!

't Is 't mijne!

Sun-corner

At home there's a sun-corner
where spring quietly stirs.
Dripping all day long.
Clear drops from the snow-rim,
they reflect both good and bad
in their brief fall, and are shattered.
The sun is a hot cataract.

In that sun-corner,
where you were born -
it's those drops that should
mirror you, and wet your lips,
pure from the snow-rim and
right into your heart.

It's in that faint smell of
spring moisture you should fall asleep.
That call you should heed.
There, everything would feel right.

It's all moving downhill.
Everything's oozing toward a distant goal,
on its way to the sea.
An unknown sea inside a dream.
All of spring's sorrow is heading there.
All thoughts spiral there
and then disappear.

Your childhood sun-corner is where
you are when the call sounds.

Uit: Suddenly, a Knock at the Door (Vertaald door Miriam Shlesinger, Sondra Silverston en Nathan Englander)

"Tell me a story," the bearded man sitting on my living-room sofa commands. The situation, I must say, is anything but pleasant. I'm someone who writes stories, not someone who tells them. And even that isn't something I do on demand. The last time anyone asked me to tell him a story, it was my son. That was a year ago. I told him something about a fairy and a ferret--I don't even remember what exactly--and within two minutes he was fast asleep. But the situation is fundamentally different. Because my son doesn't have a beard, or a pistol. Because my son asked for the story nicely, and this man is simply trying to rob me of it.

I try to explain to the bearded man that if he puts his pistol away it will only work in his favor, in our favor. It's hard to think up a story with the barrel of a loaded pistol pointed at your head. But the guy insists. "In this country," he explains, "if you want something, you have to use force." He just got here from Sweden, and in Sweden it's completely different. Over there, if you want something, you ask politely, and most of the time you get it. But not in the stifling, muggy Middle East. All it takes is one week in this place to figure out how things work--or rather, how things don't work. The Palestiniansasked for a state, nicely. Did they get one? The hell they did. So they switched to blowing up kids on buses, and people started listening. The settlers wanted a dialogue. Did anyone pick up on it? No way. So they started getting physical, pouring hot oil on the border patrolmen, and suddenly they had an audience. In this country, might makes right, and it doesn't matter if it's about politics, or economics or a parking space. Brute force is the only language we understand.

Sweden, the place the bearded guy made aliya from, is progressive, and is way up there in quite a few areas. Sweden isn't just ABBA or IKEA or the Nobel Prize. Sweden is a world unto itself, and whatever they have, they got by peaceful means. In Sweden, if he'd gone to the Ace of Base soloist, knocked on her door, and asked her to sing for him, she'd have invited him in and made him a cup of tea. Then she'd have pulled out her acoustic guitar from under the bed and played for him. All this with a smile! But here? I mean, if he hadn't been flashing a pistol I'd have thrown him out right away.“

Uit: The House of Sleep

“The group of four strangers sitting at her table may or may not have asked permission to join her. Sarah couldn't remember. Now, an argument seemed to be developing, but she did not hear what was being said, although she was conscious of their voices, rising and falling in angry counterpoint. What she heard and saw inside her head was, at that moment, more real. A single, venomous word. Eyes blazing with casual hatred. A sense that she had not so much been spoken to, as spat upon. An encounter which had lasted--two seconds?--less?--but which she had now been replaying, involuntarily, in her memory for more than half an hour. Those eyes; that word; there would be no getting rid of them, not for a while. Even now, as the voices around her grew louder and more animated, she could feel another wave of panic swell inside her. She closed her eyes, suddenly weak with nausea.

Would he have attacked her, she wondered, if the High Street had not been so busy? Dragged her into a doorway? Torn at her clothes?

She raised her mug of coffee, held it a few inches from her mouth, looked down at it. She stared at its oily surface, which was shimmering perceptibly. She clasped the mug tighter. The liquid steadied. Her hands were no longer shaking. The moment passed.

Another possibility: had it all been a dream?

'Pinter!' was the first word of the argument to catch her attention. She willed herself to look across at the speaker and concentrate”

Early In The Morning

While the long grain is softening

in the water, gurgling

over a low stove flame, before

the salted Winter Vegetable is sliced

for breakfast, before the birds,

my mother glides an ivory comb

through her hair, heavy

and black as calligrapher's ink.

She sits at the foot of the bed.

My father watches, listens for

the music of comb

against hair.

My mother combs,

pulls her hair back

tight, rolls it

around two fingers, pins it

in a bun to the back of her head.

For half a hundred years she has done this.

My father likes to see it like this.

He says it is kempt.

But I know

it is because of the way

my mother's hair falls

when he pulls the pins out.

Easily, like the curtains

when they untie them in the evening.

Pillow

There's nothing I can't find under there.

Voices in the trees, the missing pages

of the sea.

Everything but sleep.

And night is a river bridging

the speaking and listening banks,

a fortress, undefended and inviolate.

There's nothing that won't fit under it:

fountains clogged with mud and leaves,

the houses of my childhood.

And night begins when my mother's fingers

let go of the thread

they've been tying and untying

to touch toward our fraying story's hem.

Night is the shadow of my father's hands

setting the clock for resurrection.

Or is it the clock unraveled, the numbers flown?

Ther's nothing that hasn't found home there:

discarded wings, lost shoes, a broken alphabet.

Everything but sleep. And night begins

with the first beheading

of the jasmine, its captive fragrance

rid at last of burial clothes.

So Does Everybody Else, Only Not So Much

O all ye exorcizers come and exorcize now, and ye clergymen draw nigh and clerge, For I wish to be purged of an urge. It is an irksome urge, compounded of nettles and glue, And it is turning all my friends back into acquaintances, and all my acquaintances into people who look the other way when I heave into view. It is an indication that my mental buttery is butterless and my mental larder lardless, And it consists not of "Stop me if you've heard this one," but of "I know you've heard this one because I told it to you myself, but I'm going to tell it to you again regardless," Yes I fear I am living beyond my mental means. When I realize that it is not only anecdotes that I reiterate but what is far worse, summaries of radio programs and descriptions of caroons in newspapers and magazines. I want to resist but I cannot resist recounting the bright sayins of celebrities that everybody already is familiar with every word of; I want to refrain but cannot refrain from telling the same audience on two successive evenings the same little snatches of domestic gossip about people I used to know that they have never heard of. When I remember some titlating episode of my childhood I figure that if it's worth narrating once it's worth narrating twice, in spite of lackluster eyes and dropping jaws, And indeed I have now worked my way backward from titllating episodes in my own childhood to titillating episodes in the childhood of my parents or even my parents-in-laws, And what really turns my corpuscles to ice, I carry around clippings and read them to people twice. And I know what I am doing while I am doing it and I don't want to do it but I can't help doing it and I am just another Ancient Mariner, And the prospects for my future social life couldn't possibly be barrener. Did I tell you that the prospects for my future social life couldn't be barrener?

Uit: Angela's Ashes

„She spat twice on my head.
Grandma, will you please stop spitting on my head.
If you have anything to say, shut up. A little spit won't kill you. Come on, we'll be late for the Mass.
We ran to the church. My mother panted along behind with Michael in her arms. We arrived at the church just in time to see the last of the boys leaving the altar rail where the priest stood with the chalice and the host, glaring at me. Then he placed on my tongue the wafer, the body and blood of Jesus. At last, at last.
It's on my tongue. I draw it back.
It stuck.
I had God glued to the roof of my mouth. I could hear the master's voice, Don't let that host touch your teeth for if you bite God in two you'll roast in hell for eternity. I tried to get God down with my tongue but the priest hissed at me, Stop that clucking and get back to your seat. God was good. He melted and I swallowed Him and now, at last, I was a member of the True Church, an official sinner.
When the Mass ended there they were at the door of the church, my mother with Michael in her arms, my grandmother. They each hugged me to their bosoms. They each told me it was the happiest day of my life. They each cried all over my head and after my grandmother's contribution that morning my head was a swamp.
Mam, can I go now and make The Collection?
She said, After you have a little breakfast.
No, said Grandma. You're not making no collection till you have a proper First Communion breakfast at my house. Come on.
We followed her. She banged pots and rattled pans and complained that the whole world expected her to be at their beck and call. I ate the egg, I ate the sausage, and when I reached for more sugar for my tea she slapped my hand away”.

Helm

weerstand biedt tegen zwaard, kogel

Cactus

Vette vrucht die het best gedijt
bij wijde parabool (koud/warm),
een aureool straalt
bloemen en doornen uit.

Wie erin bijt

en waant zich een god

gedoofd, het vocht geroofd
en gesaved in de huishouding.

Song From Amphytrion

FAIR Iris I love, and hourly I die,

But not for a lip, nor a languishing eye:

She's fickle and false, and there we agree,

For I am as false and as fickle as she.

We neither believe what either can say;

And, neither believing, we neither betray.

'Tis civil to swear, and say things of course;

We mean not the taking for better or worse.

When present, we love; when absent, agree:

I think not of Iris, nor Iris of me.

The legend of love no couple can find,

So easy to part, or so equally join'd.

Uit: Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded

Letter I

Dear father and mother.

I have great trouble, and some comfort, to acquaint you with. The trouble is, that my good lady died of the illness I mentioned to you, and left us all much grieved for the loss of her; for she was a dear

good lady, and kind to all us her servants. Much I feared, that as I was taken by her ladyship to wait upon her person, I should be quite destitute again, and forced to return to you and my poor mother, who have enough to do to maintain yourselves; and, as my lady’s goodness had put me to write and cast accounts, and made me a little expert at my needle, and otherwise qualified above my degree, it was not every family that could have found a place that your poor Pamela was fit for: but God, whose graciousness to us we have so often experienced at a pinch, put it into my good lady's heart, on her death-bed, just an hour before she expired, to recommend to my young master all her servants, one by one; and when it came to my turn to be recommended, (for I was sobbing and crying at her pillow) she could only say, My dear son!--and so broke off a little; and then recovering--Remember my poor Pamela--And these were some of her last words! O how my eyes run--Don't wonder to see the paper so blotted.

Well, but God's will must be done!--And so comes the comfort, that I shall not be obliged to return back to be a clog upon my dear parents! For my master said, I will take care of you all, my good maidens; and for you, Pamela, (and took me by the hand; yes, he took my hand before them all,) for my dear mother's sake, I will be a friend to you, and you shall take care of my linen”.

– Hey, Alter. Was für ein Zufall. Hab mir grad die Spitzen schneiden lassen. Wie gefällt es dir?
– Sieht gut aus, echt. Und sonst? Alles paletti?
– Klar, Mann.
In mein neues Stammcafé.
Kaffee? Schokolade? Zitronentee? Mocca? Oder vielleicht eine Tomatensuppe?
– Einen Kaffee, bitte.
– Mit Milch? Zucker? Extra viel Milch?
– Einfach nur schwarz.
– Krass, Alter. Ach, hast du vielleicht ein bißchen Kleingeld? Der hier nimmt keine Scheine.
– Sicher.”

Zad khande keh man be ‘akse khubaane jahaan
Dar parde ‘eyaan baasham o bi parde nehaan.

To my rosy cheeked friend I said: ‘O, you with a mouth like a rosebud!
Do not always hide your face as if you are a flirting girl!’
She laughed and said: ‘Unlike the beauties of this world,
In the curtain I am manifest and without the curtain I am hidden.

Unless one is experiencing complete enlightenment
The source of the sun cannot be seen.

Uit: The Cretan Teat

“This assemblage of objects of reverence had remained imprisoned in this stone cell since the Paleologues ruled in Constantinople. A family of Kyriotisa had built the chapel, to worship here, generation by generation, until something untoward had happened. Wealth and prayer had failed them. Those remaining had gathered up their garments and had cleared off, perhaps to Hania to start a new life.

Without its congregation, their chapel had died, their olive trees had embraced the grotesque.
Modern me, I unholstered my Olympus camera from its shoulder-bag, switching to flash. I focused on one particular painting, daubed on the irregular plaster.

The painting was of a woman nursing a child.

The woman’s eyes had been scratched out. In consequence, her face was almost obliterated. Mould and damp had destroyed other parts of the painting. Age had mottled the plaster like a living hand. The head of the babe the woman held could hardly be distinguished. Not that the Byzantine artist had ever been numbered among the masters of his calling. Nor had he, poor man, enjoyed an intimate knowledge of a woman’s anatomy. The breast the woman had produced for the babe’s nourishment was the size and shape of an aubergine, and protruded from her lower rib.”.

Uit: The Corrections

“Ringing throughout the house was an alarm bell that no one but Alfred and Enid could hear directly. It was the alarm bell of anxiety. It was like one of those big cast-iron dishes with an electric clapper that send schoolchildren into the street in fire drills. By now it had been ringing for so many hours that the Lamberts no longer heard the message of "bell ringing" but, as with any sound that continues for so long that you have the leisure to learn its component sounds (as with any word you stare at until it resolves itself into a string of dead letters), instead heard a clapper rapidly striking a metallic resonator, not a pure tone but a granular sequence of percussions with a keening overlay of overtones; ringing for so many days that it simply blended into the background except at certain early-morning hours when one or the other of them awoke in a sweat and realized that a bell had been ringing in their heads for so long as they could remember; ringing for so many months that the sound had given way to a kind of metasound whose rise and fall was not the beating of compression waves but the much, much slower waxing and waning of their consciousness of the sound. Which consciousness was particularly acute when the weather itself was in an anxious mood. Then Enid and Alfred -- she on her knees in the dining room opening drawers, he in the basement surveying the disastrous Ping-Pong table -- each felt near to exploding with anxiety.”

Uit: Half a Life

Willie Chandran asked his father one day, "Why is my middle name Somerset? The boys at school have just found out, and they are mocking me."
His father said without joy, "You were named after a great English writer. I am sure you have seen his books about the house."
"But I haven't read them. Did you admire him so much?"
"I am not sure. Listen, and make up your own mind."
And this was the story Willie Chandran's father began to tell. It took a long time. The story changed as Willie grew up. Things were added, and by the time Willie left India to go to England this was the story he had heard.
The writer (Willie Chandran's father said) came to India to get material for a novel about spirituality. This was in the 1930s. The principal of the maharaja's college brought him to me. I was doing penance for something I had done, and I was living as a mendicant in the outer courtyard of the big temple. It was a very public place, and that was why I had chosen it. My enemies among the maharaja's officials were hounding me, and I felt safer there in the temple courtyard, with the crowds coming and going, than in my office. I was in a state of nerves because of this persecution, and to calm myself I had also taken a vow of silence. This had won me a certain amount of local respect, even renown. People would come to look at me being silent and some would bring me gifts. The state authorities had to respect my vow, and my first thought when I saw the principal with the little old white fellow was that it was a plot to make me talk. This made me very obstinate. People knew that something was afoot and they stood around to watch the encounter. I knew they were on my side. I didn't say anything. The principal and the writer did all the talking. They talked about me and they looked at me while they talked, and I sat and looked through them like someone deaf and blind, and the crowd looked at all three of us.

Earth and Sea

IT does me good to see the ships

Back safely from the deep sea main;

To see the slender mizzen tips

And all the ropes that stood the strain;

To hear the old men shout, "Ahoy!"

Glad-hearted at the journey done,

Who fix the favourite to the buoy

Of sea and wind and moon and sun.

To meet, when sails are lashed to spars,

The men for whom earth's free from care,

And heaven a clock with certain stars,

And hell a word by which to swear.

The Harvest Moon

The flame-red moon, the harvest moon,
Rolls along the hills, gently bouncing,
A vast balloon,
Till it takes off, and sinks upward
To lie on the bottom of the sky, like a gold doubloon.
The harvest moon has come,
Booming softly through heaven, like a bassoon.
And the earth replies all night, like a deep drum.

So people can't sleep,
So they go out where elms and oak trees keep
A kneeling vigil, in a religious hush.
The harvest moon has come!

And all the moonlit cows and all the sheep
Stare up at her petrified, while she swells
Filling heaven, as if red hot, and sailing
Closer and closer like the end of the world.

Till the gold fields of stiff wheat
Cry `We are ripe, reap us!' and the rivers
Sweat from the melting hills.

Work and Play

The swallow of summer, she toils all the summer,
A blue-dark knot of glittering voltage,
A whiplash swimmer, a fish of the air.
But the serpent of cars that crawls through the dust
In shimmering exhaust
Searching to slake
Its fever in ocean
Will play and be idle or else it will bust.

The swallow of summer, the barbed harpoon,
She flings from the furnace, a rainbow of purples,
Dips her glow in the pond and is perfect.
But the serpent of cars that collapsed on the beach
Disgorges its organs
A scamper of colours
Which roll like tomatoes
Nude as tomatoes
With sand in their creases
To cringe in the sparkle of rollers and screech.

The swallow of summer, the seamstress of summer,
She scissors the blue into shapes and she sews it,
She draws a long thread and she knots it at the corners.
But the holiday people
Are laid out like wounded
Flat as in ovens
Roasting and basting
With faces of torment as space burns them blue
Their heads are transistors
Their teeth grit on sand grains
Their lost kids are squalling
While man-eating flies
Jab electric shock needles but what can they do?

They can climb in their cars with raw bodies, raw faces
And start up the serpent
And headache it homeward
A car full of squabbles
And sobbing and stickiness
With sand in their crannies
Inhaling petroleum
That pours from the foxgloves
While the evening swallow
The swallow of summer, cartwheeling through crimson,
Touches the honey-slow river and turning
Returns to the hand stretched from under the eaves -
A boomerang of rejoicing shadow.

Auf sonniger See

So wandern Wunderblumen rotverschlossen

Uit: Hertha or the Story of a Soul (Vertaald door Mary Howitt)

"And we shall always continue to be minors, if we do not go to law with our father, because it is his will that we should ever be dependent upon him, and the laws of our country forbid us to act as if we were rational, independent beings! Look, Alma, it is this injustice towards us, as women, which provokes me, not merely with my father, but with the men who make these my country's unjust laws, and with all who contrary to reason and justice maintain them, and in so doing contribute to keep us in our fettered condition. We have property which we inherit from our mother; yet can we not dispose of one single farthing of it. We are old enough to know what we desire, and to be able to take care of ourselves and others, yet at the same time we are kept as children under our father and guardian, because he chooses to consider us as such, and treat us as such. We are prohibited every action, every thought which would tend to independent activity or the opening of a future for ourselves, because our father and guardian says that we are minors, that we are children, and the law says, 'it is his right; you have nothing to say!'"

"Yes," said Alma, "it is unjust, and harder than people think. But, nevertheless, our father means well by us, and manages our property justly and prudently with regard to our best interests."

"And who will be the better for it? We? When we are old and stupid, and no more good for anything? See, I shall soon be twenty-seven, you are twenty-nine already, and for what have we lived?"
