Rien a dire.

Today I will call that little repulsive office where my sister works her last days. The office is located in the middle of a ghastly desert, and it can be accessed only through an iron gate or under the controlling eyes of a security guard. What is more, I have noticed that the greater the debasement, the more vigilantly it is being guarded, the stronger is the security.

The buildings within the iron gate are revolting with no shape that would please the eye, there are some cars, and corpses of cars earned with sweat and blood standing in the courtyard. In the apartment next to the office live some architects who, unable to tolerate this depressing atmosphere, spend their energy trying to fight their neigbors’ smoking. In the next apartment lives an artist who organizes little parties with a little money collection box. Each guest must give a little money to the DJ who plays bad music. And right next to the office is a small room belonging to an unrecognized inventor where he, like a lost 19th-century person, creates the next revolutionary vacuum pump. It is the kind of office where only godforsaken women sadly enjoying their little gruesome joys work now. I also worked there for almost a year, imagine!

Uit: The End of the Road

„One of the things I did not see fit to tell Joe Morgan (for to do so would have been to testify further against myself) is that it was never very much of a chore for me, at various times, to maintain with perfectly equal unenthusiasm contradictory, or at least polarized, opinions at once on a given subject. I did so too easily, perhaps, for my own ultimate mobility. Thus it seemed to me that the Doctor was insane, and that he was profound; that Joe was brilliant and also absurd; that Rennie was strong and weak; and that Jacob Horner--owl, peacock, chameleon, donkey, and popinjay, fugitive from a medieval bestiary--was at the same time giant and dwarf, plenum and vacuum, and admirable and contemptible. Had I explained this to Joe he'd have added it to his store of evidence that I did not exist: my own feeling was that it was and was not such evidence. I explain it now in order to make as clear as I can what I mean when I say that I was shocked and not surprised, disgusted and amused, excited and bored, when, the evening after the conversation just recorded, Rennie came up to my room. I'd had a brilliant day with my students, explaining gerunds, participles, and infinitives, and my eloquence had brought me around to feeling both guilty and nonchalant about the Morgan affair.

"Well, I'll be damned!" I said when I saw her. "Come on in! Have you been excommunicated, or what?"

"I didn't want to come up here," Rennie said tersely. "I didn't want to see you again at all, Jake."

"Oh. But people want to do the things they do."

"Joe drove me in, Jake. He told me to come up here."

This was intended as a bombshell, I believe, but I was not in an explodable mood.“

Dashiell Hammett, Max Brod, Georges Eekhoud, Arnold Bennett, Said

Uit: The Maltese Falcon

“Samuel Spade's jaw was long and bony, his chin a jutting v under the more flexible v of his mouth. His nostrils curved back to make another, smaller, v. His yellow-grey eyes were horizontal. The v motif was picked up again by thickish brows rising outward from twin creases above a hooked nose, and his pale brown hair grew down-- from high flat temples--in a point on his forehead. He looked rather pleasantly like a blond satan.

He said to Effie Perine: 'Yes, sweetheart?"

She was a lanky sunburned girl whose tan dress of thin woolen stuff clung to her with an effect of dampness. Her eyes were brown and playful in a shiny boyish face. She finished shutting the door behind her, leaned against it, and said: "There's a girl wants to see you. Her name's Wonderly."

"A customer?"

"I guess so. You'll want to see her anyway: she's a knockout."

"Shoo her in, darling," said Spade. "Shoo her in."

Effie Perine opened the door again, following it back into the outer office, standing with a hand on the knob while saying: "Will you come in, Miss Wonderly?"

A voice said, "Thank you," so softly that only the purest articulation made the words intelligible, and a young woman came through the doorway. She advanced slowly, with tentative steps, looking at Spade with cobalt-blue eyes that were both shy and probing.”

Andere boeken over de Potteries waren Tales of the Five Towns (1905) en The Grim Smile of the Five Towns (1907).

“Those two girls, Constance and Sophia Baines, paid no heed to the manifold interest of their situation, of which, indeed, they had never been conscious. They were, for example, established almost precisely on the fifty-third parallel of latitude. A little way to the north of them, in the creases of a hill famous for its religious orgies, rose the river Trent, the calm and characteristic stream of middle England. Somewhat further northwards, in the near neighbourhood of the highest public-house in the realm, rose two lesser rivers, the Dane and the Dove, which, quarrelling in early infancy, turned their backs on each other, and, the one by favour of the Weaver and the other by favour of the Trent, watered between them the whole width of England, and poured themselves respectively into the Irish Sea and the German Ocean. What a county of modest, unnoticed rivers! What a natural, simple county, content to fix its boundaries by these tortuous island brooks, with their comfortable names--Trent, Mease, Dove, Tern, Dane, Mees, Stour, Tame, and even hasty Severn!

Not that the Severn is suitable to the county! In the county excess is deprecated. The county is happy in not exciting remark.

It is content that Shropshire should possess that swollen bump, the Wrekin, and that the exaggerated wildness of the Peak should lie over its border. It does not desire to be a pancake like Cheshire. It has everything that England has, including thirty miles of Watling Street; and England can show nothing more beautiful and nothing uglier than the works of nature and the works of man to be seen within the limits of the county.”

“We all have bad days, and Dr. Guy Carpenter awoke to rain drumming on gray windows, with a qualm in his gut about what this drab day might bring. Late at night an e-mail had come in, summoning him to an urgent morning meeting at the Jet Propulsion Lab with no reason given, an ill omen indeed to a survivor of the abort on the Texas plain. He was in pajamas at the desk in his den, gnawing at a slice of Swiss cheese on sourdough bread as he marked up a gloomy cost estimate of new space telescopes, when his wife burst in, her long black hair hanging in wet tangled ringlets, her soaked nightgown clinging transparently to her slim body. "Sweeney got out," she barked.

"No! How, this time?"

"I took out the trash, that's how. They collect it Wednesday at seven, or have you forgotten? It's raining buckets, I hurried, I left the screen door unlatched, and the bastard slipped out. I tried to catch him and got drenched."

"I'll find him."

"Don't you have that meeting at seven-thirty? I'm wet through and stark naked, as you see, or I'd look for him."

"No problem. Sorry about the trash."

Dr. Carpenter threw on a raincoat and plodded out barefoot on slippery grass. The downpour was helpful. Sweeney hated the wet, so he would be holed up in some dry spot of the backyard instead of hightailing it over the fence for a major chase, and if that failed, a general neighborhood alarm. Penny's obsession for keeping her cat indoors was a given of their marriage. Wonderful wife, Penny, with a human weakness or two such as a slight streak of jealousy and an unarguable dogma that outside cats were short-lived. Sweeney, a resourceful Siamese, ignored her for a doting fool, he knew he would never die, and he lay in wait for any chance to get out.”

In 1935 begon een levenslange verbintenis met The New Yorker. The way some people live.

“Jim and Irene Westcott were the kind of people who seem to strike that satisfactory average of income, endeavor, and respectability that is reached by the statistical reports in college alumni bulletins. They were the parents of two young children, they had been married nine years, they lived on the twelfth floor of an apartment house near Sutton Place, they went to the theatre on an average of 10.3 times a year, and they hoped someday to live in Westchester. Irene Westcott was a pleasant, rather plain girl with soft brown hair and a wide, fine forehead upon which nothing at all had been written, and in the cold weather she wore a coat of fitch skins dyed to resemble mink. You could not say that Jim Westcott looked younger than he was, but you could at least say of him that he seemed to feel younger. He wore his graying hair cut very short, he dressed in the kind of clothes his class had worn at Andover, and his manner was earnest, vehement, and intentionally naïve. The Westcotts differed from their friends, their classmates, and their neighbors only in an interest they shared in serious music. They went to a great many concerts–although they seldom mentioned this to anyone–and they spent a good deal of time listening to music on the radio.

Their radio was an old instrument, sensitive, unpredictable, and beyond repair. Neither of them understood the mechanics of radio–or of any of the other appliances that surrounded them–and when the instrument faltered, Jim would strike the side of the cabinet with his hand. This sometimes helped. One Sunday afternoon, in the middle of a Schubert quartet, the musicfaded away altogether. Jim struck the cabinet repeatedly, but there was no response; the Schubert was lost to them forever. He promised to buy Irene a new radio, and on Monday when he came home from work he told her that he had got one. He refused to describe it, and said it would be a surprise for her when it came.”

Seiner kalten Nacht entgegenbangt,

Steht in leichten, weißen Spitzen

Die Gemahlin. Spielend langt

„One morning, when I had gone out to see a friend, I suddenly received the news that twenty Red soldiers had surrounded my house to arrest me and that I must escape. I quickly put on one of my friend's old hunting suits, took some money and hurried away on foot along the back ways of the town till I struck the open road, where I engaged a peasant, who in four hours had driven me twenty miles from the town and set me down in the midst of a deeply forested region. On the way I bought a rifle, three hundred cartridges, an ax, a knife, a sheepskin overcoat, tea, salt, dry bread and a kettle. I penetrated into the heart of the wood to an abandoned half-burned hut. From this day I became a genuine trapper but I never dreamed that I should follow this role as long as I did. The next morning I went hunting and had the good fortune to kill two heathcock. I found deer tracks in plenty and felt sure that I should not want for food. However, my sojourn in this place was not for long. Five days later when I returned from hunting I noticed smoke curling up out of the chimney of my hut. I stealthily crept along closer to the cabin and discovered two saddled horses with soldiers' rifles slung to the saddles. Two disarmed men were not dangerous for me with a weapon, so I quickly rushed across the open and entered the hut. From the bench two soldiers started up in fright. They were Bolsheviki. On their big Astrakhan caps I made out the red stars of Bolshevism and on their blouses the dirty red bands. We greeted each other and sat down. The soldiers had already prepared tea and so we drank this ever welcome hot beverage and chatted, suspiciously eyeing one another the while. To disarm this suspicion on their part, I told them that I was a hunter from a distant place and was living there because I found it good country for sables. They announced to me that they were soldiers of a detachment sent from a town into the woods to pursue all suspicious people.“

Uit: The Spell

“He wondered if the boy had lost the way. They had started out on a driven track half-covered with small noisy stones; but it faded, was found again for half a mile, where it followed the rim of a dry wash, and then died away among the windswept contours and little dusty bushes of the desert. The pick-up roared on across long inclines of grey dirt. The boy kept his foot down and stared straight ahead, as if unable to consider the possibilities that lay to left and right. He was almost smiling -- Robin couldn't decide if from nerves or from the pleasure a local person has in scaring and disorienting a stranger. An empty bottle rolled and clinked against the metal supports of the bench-seat. Robin sat with his forearm braced in the open window, and grunted involuntarily at each bump and drop: academic research had never been so wayward or so physical. He found that he was smiling too, and that he was not only shaken but happy.

They reached a low crest and there beneath them spread thirty or forty miles of silvery waste, crossed by the quick eclipses of windy sunlight; the wide plain was rifted with gulleys and dry riverbeds, and climbed distantly to mountains which were radiant towers in the west and unguessable obscurities in the blackly shadowed south. This was what he wanted to see: it was what had brought a rich man and his architect here half a century ago. It wasn't a terrain that could be ploughed or grazed or humbled by use: nothing could have altered unless by the gradual violence of winds and storm rains. The pick-up slowed, and Robin imagined that even his guide, who had surely seen nothing but this country all his life, was responding to its magic or its admonishment.

`What are those mountains called?' he shouted over the churning of the engine and the racket of stones and grit against the bottom of the vehicle. The boy looked stoopingly across, and out beyond Robin at the morning-bright bluffs to the west. He nodded several times, perhaps he had only understood the word mountains, or was hesitating before so many mountains, with so many names.“

An Arab Tale (Vertaald door Barbara Romaine)

“Amina is afraid of the sea, but to her heart she pretends otherwise: she gets up before the rooster crows, and begins her day by going down to the beach. She stares through the darkness out to sea and whispers a prayer. After that she makes her way to the port and inquires, "Any news?"

"No news."

She walks along the path that leads to the hill, then begins her ascent to the high house. She passes by the dungeon and hears the murmurs and muffled voices. She continues the climb to the women's quarters, which are wrapped in silence and the crash of the waves.

By the time she reaches the kitchen courtyard, the darkness has faded and the sky has burst into the colors of sunrise. "Bismillah al-rahman al-rahim," she says, as she hauls out the sacks of flour and commences opening them one after another. Then she begins the process of sifting. The other women don't arrive until after Amina has finished kneading the dough and left it to rise. The women flock to their tasks, while the slaves carry in the daily provisions of fresh-killed meat, baskets of fish, and crates of fruits and vegetables.

After the call to afternoon prayer, Amina knots her handkerchief around two loaves of bread—her day's wages—picks up her bundle, and retraces her steps homeward, grains of flour still clinging to her dress and headscarf. Her body gives off mingled odors of the day's sweat and baked bread. She stops by the port.

"Any news?"

"No news."

She proceeds to the beach, sits down facing the sea . . . and waits.”

Wanson ? Wanson ! Je

me demande parfois si tu m’as jamais écouté. »

Edison (Fragment)

And now the sky beyond the trees is brightening

electric wires tremble in the snow

now promenades and corsos are aglow

now our souls are viewed on the X-ray screen

like ichthyosauri from the pliocene

now the clock's hand is moving towards six

now we go off together to the flicks

now spectral shades of gamblers and of witches

are put to flight by our electric switches

and now applause and cheers ring through the house

and Thomas Edison now takes his bows

The party's over now your soul is dark

the guests have left and you are back at work

Look at those inventors and at their resources

yet the stars have not deviated from their courses

look at all those people living quietly

no this isn't work nor even energy

this is adventure as on the high seas

locking oneself in one's laboratories

look at all those people living quietly

no this isn't work it's poetry

It's intention and a bit of accident

to become one's country's president

to become a poet who's outstripped you all

to become a songbird holding you in thrall

to be always lucky at roulette

to be the discoverer of a new planet

Rond 1912 leerde Bodenheim Ben Hecht in Chicago kennen.

EAST SIDE MOVING PICTURE THEATRE--SUNDAY

An old woman rubs her eyes

As though she were stroking children back to life.

A slender Jewish boy whose forehead

Is tall, and like a wind-marked wall,

Restlessly waits while leaping prayers

Clash their light-cymbals within his eyes.

And a little hunchbacked girl

Straightens her back with a slow-pulling smile.

(I am afraid to look at her again.)

Then the blurred, tawdry pictures rush across the scene,

And I hear a swishing intake of breath,

As though some band of shy rigid spirits

Were standing before their last heaven.

Factory-girl

Why are your eyes like dry brown flower-pods,

Still, gripped by the memory of lost petals?

I feel that, if I touched them,

They would crumble to falling brown dust,

And you would stand with blindness revealed.

Yet you would not shrink, for your life

Has been long since memorized,

And eyes would only melt out against its high walls.

Besides, in the making of boxes

Sprinkled with crude forget-me-nots,

One is curiously blessed if one's eyes are dead.

Uit: VOYAGE  DU N° 43 DE LA RUE SAINT-GEORGES

Uit: Letters of the Right Honourable Lady M—y W—y M—e

“_Rotterdam, Aug_. 3. O. S. 1716.

I FLATTER, myself, dear sister, that I shall give you some pleasure in letting you know that I have safely passed the sea, though we had the ill fortune of a storm.  We were persuaded by the captain of the yacht to set out in a calm, and he pretended there was nothing so easy as to tide it over; but, after two days slowly moving, the wind blew so hard, that none of the sailors could keep their feet, and we were all Sunday night tossed very handsomely.  I never saw a man more frighted (sic) than the captain.  For my part, I have been so lucky, neither to suffer from fear nor seasickness; though, I confess, I was so impatient to see myself once more upon dry land, that I would not stay till the yacht could get to Rotterdam, but went in the long-boat to Helvoetsluys, where we had voitures to carry us to the Briel.  I was charmed with the neatness of that little town; but my arrival at Rotterdam presented me a new scene of pleasure.  All the streets are

paved with broad stones, and before many of the meanest artificers doors are placed seats of various coloured marbles, so neatly kept, that, I assure you, I walked almost all over the town yesterday, _incognito_,  in my slippers without receiving one spot of dirt; and you may see the Dutch maids washing the pavement of the street, with more application than ours do our bed-chambers.  The town seems so full of people, with such busy faces, all in motion, that I can hardly fancy it is not some celebrated fair; but I see it is every day the same.  'Tis certain no town can be more advantageously situated for commerce.  Here are seven large canals, on which the merchants ships come up to the very doors of their houses.  The shops and warehouses are of a surprising neatness and magnificence, filled with an incredible quantity of fine merchandise, and so much cheaper than what we see in England, that I have much ado to persuade myself I am still so near it.”
