“Two former lovers of Molly Lane stood waiting outside the crematorium chapel with their backs to the February chill. It had all been said before, but they said it again.

"She never knew what hit her." "When she did it was too late." "Rapid onset." "Poor Molly." "Mmm."

Poor Molly. It began with a tingling in her arm as she raised it outside the Dorchester Grill to stop a cab--a sensation that never went away. Within weeks she was fumbling for the names of things. Parliament, chemistry, propeller she could forgive herself, but less so bed, cream, mirror. It was after the temporary disappearance of acanthus and bresaiola that she sought medical advice, expecting reassurance. Instead, she was sent for tests and, in a sense, never returned. How quickly feisty Molly became the sickroom prisoner of her morose, possessive husband, George. Molly, restaurant critic, gorgeous wit, and photographer, the daring gardener, who had been loved by the foreign secretary and could still turn a perfect cartwheel at the age of forty-six. The speed of her descent into madness and pain became a matter of common gossip: the loss of control of bodily function and with it all sense of humor, and then the tailing off into vagueness interspersed with episodes of ineffectual violence and muffled shrieking.

It was the sight now of George emerging from the chapel that caused Molly's lovers to move off farther up the weedy gravel path. They wandered into an arrangement of oval rose beds marked by a sign, THE GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE. Each plant had been savagely cut back to within a few inches of the frozen ground, a practice Molly used to deplore.”

August 8, 1895, aboard a ship bound for Jaffa:

I have resolved to record my words in this diary for fear, otherwise, of taking leave of my senses. Our small and narrow cabin in the depths of this ship imprisons my thoughts; if I do not share them posthaste I should best jump herewith into the sea.

The root of all my troubles and complaints is Her Ladyship, known legally and familiarly as Esther, like the Biblical queen – and regal she is. More beautiful than beauty itself: thin, tall and erect, high cheek-boned. Were I Esther's King Ahasuerus, I would certainly offer half my kingdom for a mere glimpse of those limpid eyes more blue than the sea.

The first I hear tell of her, she was a student of dentistry in Warsaw. I sought her out, caught the splendor of her countenance, and at once my heart was pricked by love's needle. This maiden would be the object of my affections forever, my beloved spouse unto eternity, a member of God's heavenly choir. The timbre of her voice was like the fluttering of dew over a garden bed of spices, her gowns layers of the finest gauze, her hair shiny and golden. Any man who did not fall to her charms had no right to call himself a man.

A côté.

Aber was? Wir haben schon das Allerverrückteste getan! Was könnte so verrücktsein wie deine Idee, zu heiraten?Nicht meine Idee, unser Entschluss!Ja, unser Entschluss! Und was könnte jetzt also angemessen verrückt sein?Wir gehen ins Kasino. Glück und Glücksspiel. Warst du schon einmal im Kasino?Nein.Komm, Nathan, bitte lass uns ins Kasino gehen. Wir haben heute Glück. Ich weiß es. Hast dueine Krawatte? Wissen Sie was, Hannah?

“But, my dear Marcolini ..."

"What ...?"

And, after taking a sip of liqueur he set his glass down, and expounded the history of creation for me: here is a resume of what he said.

God is the poet. The music is by Satan, a young and very promising composer, who was trained in the heavenly conservatory. A rival of Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel, he resented the preference they enjoyed in the distribution of the prizes. It could also be that the over-sweet and mystical style of these other pupils was abhorrent to his essentially tragic genius. He plotted a rebellion which was discovered in time, and he was expelled from the conservatory. And that would have been that, if God had not written an opera libretto libretto (ləbrĕt`ō) [Ital.,=little book], the text of an opera or an oratorio. Although a play usually emphasizes an integrated plot, a libretto is most often a loose plot connecting a series of episodes. , which he had given up, being of the opinion that this type of recreation was inappropriate to His eternity. Satan took the manuscript with him to hell. With the aim of showing that he was better than the others--and perhaps of seeking a reconciliation with heaven--he composed the score, and as soon as he had finished it took it to the Heavenly Father.

"Lord, I have not forgotten the lessons I have learned," he said. "Here is the score, listen to it, have it played, and if you think it worthy of the heavenly heights, admit me with it to sit at your feet ..."

"No," replied the Lord, "I don't want to hear a thing."

"But, Lord ..."

"Not a thing, not a thing!"

Satan went on pleading, with no greater success, until God, tired and full of mercy, gave His consent for the opera to be performed, but outside heaven. He created a special theater, this planet, and invented a whole company, with all the principal and minor roles, the choruses and the dancers.

"Come and listen to some of the rehearsals!"

"No, I don't want to know about it. I've done enough, composing the libretto; I'll consent to sharing the royalties with you."

in één snik rees het hele huis

Echt geloven toen zelfs niet
de schok bedwongen zei iedereen
naar mijn idee iets te vaak:
het is werkelijk waar
toen zag ik moeders gezicht
heel donker vreemd verstrakt
haar lichaam half in stoel getild

Gewaarschuwd, gesmeekt, bezworen, geboden

Wij willen hun vogels, hun blindheid, hun fruit,
hun gras. Wij willen hun tijd niet uit.

Uit: Eros: the Bittersweet

“The Greek word eros denotes "want," "lack," "desire for that which is missing." The lover wants what he does not have. It is by definition impossible for him to have what he wants if, as soon as it is had, it is no longer wanting. This is more than wordplay. There is a dilemma within eros that has been thought crucial by thinkers from Sappho to the present day. Plato turns and returns to it. Four of his dialogues explore what it means to say that desire can only be for what is lacking, not at hand, not present, not in one's posession nor in one's being: eros entails endeia. As Diotima puts it in the Symposium, Eros is a bastard got by Wealth on Poverty and ever at home in a life of want. Hunger is the analog chosen by Simone Weil for this conundrum:

'All our desires are contradictory, like the desire for food. I want the person I love to love me. If he is, however, totally devoted to me he does not exist any longer and I cease to love him. And as long as he is not totally devoted to me he does not love me enough. Hunger and repletion."

Emily Dickinson puts the case more pertly in "I Had Been Hungry":

So I found

that hunger was a way

of persons outside windows

that entering takes away.

Petrarch interprets the problem in terms of the ancient physiology of fire and ice:

I know to follow while I flee my fire

I freeze when present; when absent, hot is my desire. ("Trionfo d'Amore")

Sartre has less patience with the contradictory ideal of desire, this "dupery." He sees in erotic relations a system of infinite reflections, a deceiving mirror-game that carries within itself its own frusteration.”

Self-Portrait

Between the computer, a pencil, and a typewriter

half my day passes. One day it will be half a century.

I live in strange cities and sometimes talk

with strangers about matters strange to me.

I listen to music a lot: Bach, Mahler, Chopin, Shostakovich.

I see three elements in music: weakness, power, and pain.

The fourth has no name.

I read poets, living and dead, who teach me

tenacity, faith, and pride. I try to understand

the great philosophers--but usually catch just

scraps of their precious thoughts.

I like to take long walks on Paris streets

and watch my fellow creatures, quickened by envy,

anger, desire; to trace a silver coin

passing from hand to hand as it slowly

loses its round shape (the emperor's profile is erased).

Beside me trees expressing nothing

but a green, indifferent perfection.

Black birds pace the fields,

waiting patiently like Spanish widows.

I'm no longer young, but someone else is always older.

I like deep sleep, when I cease to exist,

and fast bike rides on country roads when poplars and houses

dissolve like cumuli on sunny days.

Sometimes in museums the paintings speak to me

and irony suddenly vanishes.

I love gazing at my wife's face.

Every Sunday I call my father.

Every other week I meet with friends,

thus proving my fidelity.

My country freed itself from one evil. I wish

another liberation would follow.

Could I help in this? I don't know.

I'm truly not a child of the ocean,

as Antonio Machado wrote about himself,

but a child of air, mint and cello

and not all the ways of the high world

cross paths with the life that--so far--

belongs to me.

"Nee", rief er, "det is nich möglich. Det kann ja nich sind! Ick krieje mir nich mehr ein! Ach du liebet bisschen! Komm in Paules Arme!" Wir begrüßten einander, tanzten wie die Indianer. Sternchen Siegel hatte schon die Schnapsgläser gefüllt. "Prost!" Sie machten sich alle miteinander bekannt.
Ein Polizist kam, der Lastwagen sollte weiterfahren. "Momang", sagte Paule, "kommt mal mit." Er astete einen Karton aus dem Führerhaus. "Für euch", sagte er. "Hat Paule mitgebracht. Freude!"
"Was ist denn drin?" fragte Gigi. Paule legte einen Finger auf die Lippen. "Wird nich verraten!"
Ein großer Karton! Schnüffelpaule stieg wieder ein. Langsam rollte der Lastzug an. "Bis morgen!" rief Paule.
Sternchen Siegel rief: "Bitteschön, derf ich fragen wat hamse jeladen?"
Paule rief zurück: "Vierzigtausend Büchsen Thunfisch!"
Im Karton waren zweihundert Büchsen Thunfisch....“

„Outside, on Stuyvesant Square, the trees were in full leaf, and the wedding guests arriving by twos and threes in taxis heard the voices of children playing round the statue of Peter Stuyvesant in the park. Paying the driver, smoothing out their gloves, the pairs and trios of young women, Kay's classmates, stared about them curiously, as though they were in a foreign city. They were in the throes of discovering New York, imagine it, when some of them had actually lived here all their lives, in tiresome Georgian houses full of waste space in the Eighties or Park Avenue apartment buildings, and they delighted in such out-of-the-way corners as this, with its greenery and Quaker meeting-house in red brick, polished brass, and white trim next to the wine-purple Episcopal church—on Sundays, they walked with their beaux across Brooklyn Bridge and poked into the sleepy Heights section of Brooklyn; they explored residential Murray Hill and quaint MacDougal Alley and Patchin Place and Washington Mews with all the artists' studios; they loved the Plaza Hotel and the fountain there and the green mansarding of the Savoy Plaza and the row of horsedrawn hacks and elderly coachmen, waiting, as in a French place, to tempt them to a twilight right through Central Park.“

Zijn populaire gedicht Василий Тёркин

Tyorkin wounded

On the mounds of graves, on ditches,
On half-rusted barbed-wire stretches,
On the hills, on open patches
Of the mangled countryside,
In the marshy woods, on bushes--
See the snows of wintertide.

And the ground-wind swathes the meadows
In a white, impervious shroud;
Blizzards boom in gutted chimneys
Down along the empty road.

Locked in snowdrifts quite impassable,
These once quiet and peaceful lands
All this winter unforgettable
Reeked of smoke from guns innumerable,
Not of smoke from ingle brands.

And in dug-outs with no heating,
In the woods, on icy snows,
By their tanks and field-guns waiting
While the patient horses froze,
Soldiers learnt the tedious wartime
Count of endless nights and days.

RISING A ONE-EYED HORSE

One side of his world is always missing.

You may give it a casual wave of the hand

or rub it with your shoulder as you pass,

but nothing on his blind side ever happens.

Hundreds of trees slip past him into darkness,

drifting into a hollow hemisphere

whose sounds you will have to try to explain.

Your legs will tell him not to be afraid

if you learn never to lie. Do not forget

to turn his head and let what comes come seen:

he will jump the fences he has to if you swing

toward them from the side that he can see

and hold his good eye straight. The heavy dark

will stay beside you always; let him learn

to lean against it. It will steady him

and see you safely through diminished fields.

Moeder en kind

Wanneer ik weeldedronken

mijn rozig kind beschouw

en die ‘t mij heeft geschonken,

mijn aangebeden vrouw,

zo vraag niet wie van beiden

mijn hart het meest bemint…

Mijn hart en kan niet scheiden

de moeder van het kind.

Ik doe mijn armen open

en sluit ze er in bijeen,

en vreugdetranen lopen

mij langs de wangen heen…

Ach, wist gij, spreek ik stille,

hoe zeer gij wordt bemind,

gij, kind, om moeders wille,

gij, moeder, om uw kind!

„'You too will marry a boy I choose,' said Mrs Rupa Mehra firmly to her younger daughter.

Lata avoided the maternal imperative by looking around the great lamp-lit garden of Prem Nivas. The wedding-guests were gathered on the lawn. 'Hmm,' she said. This annoyed her mother further.

'I know what your hmms mean, young lady, and I can tell you I will not stand for hmms in this matter. I do know what is best. I am doing it all for you. Do you think it is easy for me, trying to arrange things for all four of my children without His help?' Her nose began to redden at the thought of her husband, who would, she felt certain, be partaking of their present joy from somewhere benevolently above. Mrs Rupa Mehra believed, of course, in reincarnation, but at moments of exceptional sentiment, she imagined that the late Raghubir Mehra still inhabited the form in which she had known him when he was alive: the robust, cheerful form of his early forties before overwork had brought about his heart attack at the height of the Second World War. Eight years ago, eight years, thought Mrs Rupa Mehra miserably.

'Now, now, Ma, you can't cry on Savita's wedding day,' said Lata, putting her arm gently but not very concernedly around her mother's shoulder.

'If He had been here, I could have worn the tissue-patola sari I wore for my own wedding,' sighed Mrs Rupa Mehra. 'But it is too rich for a widow to wear.

' 'Ma!' said Lata, a little exasperated at the emotional capital her mother insisted on making out of every possible circumstance. 'People are looking at you. They want to congratulate you, and they'll think it very odd if they see you cryingin this way.'

Several guests were indeed doing namasté to Mrs Rupa Mehra and smiling at her; the cream of Brahmpur society, she was pleased to note.

'Let them see me!' said Mrs Rupa Mehra defiantly, dabbing at her eyes hastily with a handkerchief perfumed with 4711 eau-de-Cologne. 'They will only think it is because of my happiness at Savita's wedding. Everything I do is for you, and no one appreciates me. I have chosen such a good boy for Savita, and all everyone does is complain.'

The Frog

Comes to mind as another small

upheaval

amongst the rubble.

His eye matches exactly the bubble

in my spirit-level.

I set aside hammer and chisel

and take him on the trowel.

The entire population of Ireland

springs from a pair left to stand

overnight in a pond

in the gardens of Trinity College,

two bottle of wine left there to chill

after the Act of Union.

There is, surely, in this story

a moral. A moral for our times.

What if I put him to my head

and squeezed it out of him,

like the juice of freshly squeezed limes,

or a lemon sorbet?

Was wissen denn die. Du liegst ganz still um meinen Hals.

J'aime ! Et je sens qu'une femme
Des femmes craint le pouvoir.
Le vôtre est tout dans vos charmes,
Qu'il faut, par force, adorer.
L'inquiétude a des larmes :
Je ne voulais pas pleurer.

Quelque part que je me trouve,
Mon seul ami va venir ;
Je vis de ce qu'il éprouve,
J'en fais tout mon avenir.
Se souvient-on d'humbles flammes
Quand on voit vos yeux brûler ?
Ils font trembler bien des âmes :
Je ne voulais pas trembler.

Dans cette foule asservie,
Dont vous respirez l'encens,
Où j'aurais senti ma vie
S'en aller à vos accents,
Celui qui me rend peureuse,
Moins tendre, sans repentir,
M'eût dit : " N'es-tu plus heureuse ? "
Je ne voulais pas mentir.

Dans l'éclat de vos conquêtes
Si votre coeur s'est donné,
Triste et fier au sein des fêtes,
N'a-t-il jamais frissonné ?
La plus tendre, ou la plus belle,
Aiment-elles sans souffrir ?
On meurt pour un infidèle :
Je ne voulais pas mourir.

Marc Chagall

He's old and resembles his loneliness.

He doesn't't care to discourse on the weather.

Right away with a question:

"Are you not from Vitebsk?"

An old fashioned blazer with worn out lapels . . .

"No, I'm not from Vitebsk . . ."

A long pause.

And then -- dull and monotonous

words:

"I work and I'm sick,

there's an exhibition in Venice . . . .

So, you're not from Vitebsk?"

"No, I'm not from Vitebsk."

He looks to the side.

Doesn't hear.

With a foreign distance he sighs,

attempting to cautiously reach for his childhood . . .

And there's no Cannes,

no Azure shore,

no present glory . . .

Brightly and perplexedly

he's yearning for Vitebsk, as if a plant  . . .

His Vitebsk

is industrial and hot,

pinned to the Earth with a watch-tower.

There's weddings and deaths, prayers and fairs.

There, especially, blossom large heavy apples,

and a sleepy cabdriver rolls down the square . . .

". . . Are you not from Vitebsk? . . . "

He becomes silent.

And suddenly pronounces

the names of streets:

Smolenskaya,

Zamskovaya.

As if the Volga, he brags about the river Vidba,

and waves with a kid-like open hand  . . .

"So, you're not from Vitebsk . . . "

Time to bid farewell.

Soon its time to return home.

Down the road the trees

stand at attention.

And it's a pity

that I'm not from Vitebsk.

“One of the forms I had filled out a few days before, ready for mailing, was the usual questionnaire from Who's Who in America. I suppose I found some amusement in reading it again: I ha' by that day written

The Children's Hour, Days t' Come, The Little Foxes, Watch on the Rhine, The Searching Wind, Another Part of the Forest, The Autumn Garden. I had collected and introduced volume of Chekhov letters, written movies and tinkered with others, belonged to organizations, unions-all the stuff I always have to look up from the previous Who's Who because I can't remember the dates.

Then I took a nap and woke up in a sweat of bewilderment about myself. I telephoned Hammett and he said he would take the next train from Katonah, so to sit still and do nothing until he got there. But the calm was gone now and I couldn't do that.

I went immediately to Stanley Isaacs, who had been borough president of Manhattan and who had suffered under an attack, led by Robert Moses, because one of his minor assistants was a member of the Communist Party. Stanley had stood up well under the attack, although, of course, the episode hurt his very Republican career. (I had gone to him as an admiring stranger as soon as he returned to his own law practice and had brought along with me, in the following years, quite a few people who liked and admired him.) Isaacs was an admirable man, but I think by the time of my subpoena he was more worried than he wanted to admit, and knew that his way back to politics-he was, in fact, never to have a way back-could be mended only with care. Isaacs and I were fond of each other and his face looked pained as he told me that he didn't believe he should handle the case, he didn't know enough about the field, but together we would find the right man.”

Uit: The Colonel's Dream

Two gentlemen were seated, one March morning in 189—, in the private office of French and Company, Limited, on lower Broadway. Mr. Kirby, the junior partner—a man of thirty-five, with brown hair and mustache, clean-cut, handsome features, and an alert manner, was smoking cigarettes almost as fast as he could roll them, and at the same time watching the electric clock upon the wall and getting up now and then to stride restlessly back and forth across the room.

Mr. French, the senior partner, who sat opposite Kirby, was an older man—a safe guess would have placed him somewhere in the debatable ground between forty and fifty; of a good height, as could be seen even from the seated figure, the upper part of which was held erect with the unconscious ease which one associates with military training. His closely cropped brown hair had the slightest touch of gray. The spacious forehead, deep-set gray eyes, and firm chin, scarcely concealed by a light beard, marked the thoughtful man of affairs. His face indeed might have seemed austere, but for a sensitive mouth, which suggested a reserve of humour and a capacity for deep feeling. A man of well-balanced character, one would have said, not apt to undertake anything lightly, but sure to go far in whatever he took in hand; quickly responsive to a generous impulse, and capable of a righteous indignation; a good friend, a dangerous enemy; more likely to be misled by the heart than by the head; of the salt of the earth, which gives it savour.“

Man of vrouw?

Où les yeux plongent vainement ;

Nous sommes les flots et les ondes

Qui déroulent autour des mondes

Leur manteau d’azur écumant !

Une âme immense en nous respire,

Elle soulève notre sein ;

Some Account of the Life &c. of Mr. William Shakespear.

Uit: Some Account of the Life of Mr. William Shakespear

„It seems to be a kind of Respect due to the Memory of Excellent Men, especially of those whom their Wit and Learning have made Famous, to deliver some Account of themselves, as well as their Works, to Posterity. For this Reason, how fond do we see some People of discovering any little Personal Story of the great Men of Antiquity, their Families, the common Accidents of their Lives, and even their Shape, Make and Features have been the Subject of critical Enquiries. How trifling soever this Curiosity may seem to be, it is certainly very Natural; and we are hardly satisfy'd with an Account of any remarkable Person, 'till we have heard him describ'd even to the very Cloaths he wears. As for what relates to Men of Letters, the knowledge of an Author may sometimes conduce to the better understanding his Book: And tho' the Works of Mr. Shakespear may seem to many not to want a Comment, yet I fancy some little Account of the Man himself may not be thought improper to go along with them.

He was the Son of Mr. John Shakespear, and was Born at Stratford upon Avon, in Warwickshire, in April 1564. His Family, as appears by the Register and Publick Writings relating to that Town, were of good Figure and Fashion there, and are mention'd as Gentlemen. His Father, who was a considerable Dealer in Wool, had so large a Family, ten Children in all, that tho' he was his eldest Son, he could give him no better Education than his own Employment.“
