Uit: The Wishbones

„Buzzy, the bass player, had a suspended license, so Dave swung by his house on the way to the Wednesday-night showcase. Buzzy did quality control for a company that manufactured prosthetic devices, and lived with his wife and two kids on a street of more or less identical split levels that must have seemed like an exciting place in the days before the British Invasion, back when Kennedy was President and Elvis was King. Buzzy was the only member of the wedding band who was married, a fact whose irony did not escape the notice of his fellow musicians. Artie, the sax player and manager, had just broken up with a girl who danced at Jiggles. Stan, the drummer and sometime accordionist, was sleepwalking through a painful divorce. Ian, the singer/keyboardist and all-around showman, was living at home with his parents, as was Dave, who handled rhythm guitar and background vocals.

Buzzy was waiting by the curb, a scrawny, ponytailed guy in a tuxedo and Yankees cap, with a beer in one hand and a guitar case in the other. He stowed his bass in the backseat, on top of Dave's Les Paul, and climbed in.

"Daverino," he said, tilting the beer can in salute.

"Buzzmaster."

Dave shifted into gear and headed for Central Avenue. The silence in the car was mellow, uncomplicated. Buzzy took a swig from the can and smacked his lips.

"Yup. Another Wednesday-night showcase."

"You ready? The people are counting on you."

Buzzy thought it over for a couple of seconds, then nodded.

"Coach," he said, "I'mgonna play my heart out."

Dave snorted his appreciation. The guys in the band liked to joke about the showcase, but they were careful not to complain—bookings had doubled since Artie found them the slot. And besides, goofy as it was, the showcase turned out to be a real time-saver: instead of scheduling separate auditions for every interested couple, the Wishbones could just tell prospective customers to come to the Ramada every third Wednesday of the month.

"You going out afterward?" Buzzy crushed the can in his hand and dropped it on the floor. "I'm in the mood for a few beers."

"I can't. I'm supposed to go over to Julie's."

"Hey." Buzzy didn't bother to conceal his surprise. "You guys really getting back together?"

Der Baum der Erinnerung

Ja, du bist es, blütenreicher

Baum, das ist dein süßer Hauch!

Ich auch bins, nur etwas bleicher,

Etwas trauriger wohl auch.

Hinter deinen Blütenzweigen

Tönte Nachtigallenschlag,

Und die Holde war mein eigen,

Die an meinem Herzen lag.

Und wir meinten selig beide,

Und ich meint es bis zur Stund,

Daß so herrlich du vor Freude

Blühtest über unsern Bund.

Treulos hat sie mich verlassen;

Doch du blühst wie dazumal,

Kannst dich freilich nicht befassen

Mit der fremden Liebesqual.

»Allzulieblich scheint die Sonne,

Weht der linde Maienwind,

Und das Blühen und die Wonne

Allzubald vorüber sind!«

Mahnend säuseln mir die Lehre

Deine frohen Blüten zu;

Doch ungläubig fließt die Zähre,

Und mein Herz verlor die Ruh.

Dein Bild

Die Sonne sinkt, die Berge glühn,

Und aus des Abends Rosen

Seh ich so schön dein Bild mir blühn,

So fern dem Hoffnungslosen.

Strahlt Hesperus dann hell und mild

Am blauen Himmelsbogen,

So hat mit ihm dein süßes Bild

Die Sternenflur bezogen.

Im mondbeglänzten Laube spielt

Der Abendwinde Säuseln;

Wie freudig um dein zitternd Bild

Des Baches Wellen kräuseln! –

Es braust der Wald, am Himmel ziehn

Des Sturmes Donnerflüge,

Da mal ich in die Wetter hin,

O Mädchen, deine Züge.

Ich seh die Blitze trunkenhaft

Um deine Züge schwanken,

Wie meiner tiefen Leidenschaft

Aufflammende Gedanken.

Vom Felsen stürzt die Gemse dort,

Enteilet mit den Winden;

So sprang von mir die Freude fort

Und ist nicht mehr zu finden.

Da bin ich, weiß nicht selber wie,

An einen Abgrund kommen,

Der noch das Kind der Sonne nie

In seinen Schoß genommen.

Ich aber seh aus seiner Nacht

Dein Bild so hold mir blinken,

Wie mir dein Antlitz nie gelacht; –

Wills mich hinunterwinken? –

Uit: Lord Vishnu's Love Handles

“This knowing things was what got me into the Internet back before anyone knew it would go colossal. This knowing things has put a very nice roof over our heads. But it is also part of my problem. A therapist once told me I might be crazy. Well, he didn't say that exactly, but I knew what he meant. That's when I stopped talking about what I "know." And I stopped seeing that asshole. Now, I keep what goes on inside my head in my head. I just go to work building Web sites and I play golf at the club. I keep my mouth shut. I make money, which makes Shelby happy. And this, in turn, makes me happy.

Or at least, close to happy.

Okay, truth be told, I'm not all that happy. It's the dreams and all this knowing-things-that-I-shouldn't. It stalks me and beats me in the head. Like every time I think Shelby cheats on me. And I think she does this quite often. She fucks the pool guy. She screws her tennis pro. And she nails my best friend and business partner, Reed Bindler, every Wednesday night when she says she's at Bunco. I dream about all of this; and I am afraid that this is true. I know that Shelby loves me. But I keep having these dreams and they are burning me alive.

Now, hold on to your seat because this is where things get really wacko. I think I know why Shelby cheats. I saw it one night after I rolled off her sweaty body and into a dream where her genes, her actual DNA, spoke to me. I know this sounds absolutely crazy, but they told me of their plan. They told me that they were promiscuous genes, programmed by nature to fuck around. Nothing against me, they said. Shelby just has slutty DNA. And from a survival-of-the-fittest perspective, this is a very good thing. Something about a wide range of spawnings adding variety to her own genes and thus ensuring their replication.

This is how her genes told me it works: Shelby marries me, a cerebral provider. They actually called me that. A "cerebral provider"? I mean, is that a compliment or is that a put-down? Anyhow, Shelby gets all her food and shelter needs met by me in spades. And our coupling will produce children who share my genes and her genes. This is good for me because my genes tend to be the faithful sort. Matched up with Shelby's slut genes, my seed will spread all over the place.“

Rappa, Rudolf G. Binding, Albert Sorel

August

Ernster August! Versengst du

mit dörrenden Stürmen die Liebe?

Brechen Wellen des Meeres

ein in die Müde der Augen?

Zittert das Licht aus zu hoher

Wölbung des Äthers?

oder wehrt sich das Herz

übermächtiger Glut?

Nun sind die Felder geleert.

Die Wälder verdunkeln.

Lichter süßer und liebender

hat uns der Mai einst umarmt.

Wehre dich, Herz!

Sammle das Süße in dir.

„On a summer day in 1884 a blue-eyed four-year-old with ash-blond hair walked with her English nurse in the old cemetery in West Philadelphia near her grandmother's house. It was quiet there, the day was clear, she could smell boxwood, pine and new-mown grass. She walked on a gravel path littered with tiny shells, which she stopped to collect. There were high trees to her right, an avenue ahead and, to her left, bare grass, mounds of earth and new graves.
A small group wearing black came toward her across the grass. A woman among them, tall, with a long veil and gloves, seemed to stare at her. Two of the men carried between them a white wooden box. The group stopped by a freshly dug hole beside which was a mound of earth. They lowered the box into the hole and a man began shoveling in earth. At the sound of the earth hitting the box, the woman jerked back. The movement made the girl think of her mechanical bear on its green baize stand at home in London. The woman bent over the hole in the ground then raised her face and screamed. She seemed to scream at the sky, the trees, the man shoveling earth and the little girl out with her nurse.
Consolation for such ontological terrors was not on offer to Marguerite Radclyffe-Hall from her mother, whom she feared and despised: "Always my mother. Violent and brainless. A fool but a terribly crafty and cruel fool for whom life had early become a distorting mirror in which she saw only her own reflection."
In two unpublished autobiographical pieces, Forebears and Infancy and Michael West, in letters and in fictional allusion in her novels, she defined her mother as grasping, violent andcapricious. "I cannot," she said, "keep the fifth commandment." Home for a child, she averred, should be a refuge, a place of affection and kindness. Hers was "bereft of security" and she was haunted by the feeling that something was wrong. "I pity those whose memories of home have been rendered intolerable as have mine. They and I have lost a great sweetness in life."

Uit: Exit A

„This boy is an American, born on the third of July, 1972. While his mother spat and screamed through the life-endangering birth, his father and the orderlies and janitors lit illegal fireworks in the hospital parking lot. The men drank from bottles of bourbon and beer while leaning down to light Bottle Rockets and Flaming Marys and Wailing Jennys. His father supplied the armament and the devil's milk, and the matches, and most of the boisterous ranting and raving about God and Country and the Founding Fathers and the Mayflower and Plymouth Rock and the Salem witch trials and the Red Threat, that ungainly, bloody bear from the East.

The doctor held the boy upside down, and the safety of the womb became history. The room above the mother spun one hundred times, and she went under.

No one found the father, not even the orderly sent to look. So they slapped the boy's bottom and placed him in a crib, where he waited for someone with his same blood to come to consciousness. His aunt Mirtha was the first to appear at the hospital, and after cursing the father's name, she picked up the boy and performed an auntly show for him, baby talk and ego stroking and burp and bowel sounds. Because his aunt was present and cogent, and the nurses wanted to get down to the parade grounds for the base general's midnight fireworks display, they asked her to name the boy, and she did. This boy's name is Severin Boxx.

This girl's name is Virginia Sachiko Kindwall. She is the daughter of General Oliver Kindwall and Mrs. Oliver Kindwall, once known as Olive, though that was not her given name but simply a shortening of her husband's. Her given name was Nakashima Sachiko. Olive died on the birthing table at Travis Air Force Base in California, in July 1972. While she died giving birth to Virginia Sachiko, her husband, a major at the time, paced the base morgue while overseeing the identification and shipment home of the newest dead boys from Vietnam, some of the last. Later, Kindwall would tell his daughter that on the day of her mother's death and her own birth, the dead boys from Vietnam seemed much more dead than usual.“

His Books

MY days among the Dead are past;

   Around me I behold,

Where'er these casual eyes are cast,

   The mighty minds of old:

My never-failing friends are they,

With whom I converse day by day.

With them I take delight in weal

   And seek relief in woe;

And while I understand and feel

How much to them I owe,

My cheeks have often been bedew'd

With tears of thoughtful gratitude.

My thoughts are with the Dead; with them

   I live in long-past years,

Their virtues love, their faults condemn,

   Partake their hopes and fears;

And from their lessons seek and find

Instruction with an humble mind.

My hopes are with the Dead; anon

My place with them will be,

And I with them shall travel on

   Through all Futurity;

Yet leaving here a name, I trust,

That will not perish in the dust.

„Alles is klaar in huize Minardi.

Uit: No Smoking  (No Fumadores, vertaald door John Garrett Underhill)

„LADY: For goodness' sake, don't stop upon our account! Smoke as much as you want to--it doesn't bother me, or my daughter, either. We are used to it. Her poor father, my first husband--who is now in glory--was never without a cigar in his mouth. As he bit off one, it lit it with the butt of the other. And my second husband--who now rests in peace--they were alike as two buttons; you could scarcely tell the difference. I had a difficulty at one time myself, a suffocating feeling, all stuffed up here--terrible distress--and the doctors were telling me that it was asthma and that it wasn't asthma-- Well, I smoked then myself--aromatic cigarettes--which didn't do me any good, either, by the way, I can say that. So you see as far as we are concerned, you needn't think you are inconveniencing us. You can't annoy us by smoking. Before we changed we were travelling in the ladies' compartment, and we transferred to this one as soon as we could because there were people in it one simply couldn't travel with; they were out of the question. You would think that people who travelled first class would have manners, that they would know something. But not a bit of it! Believe me, if you want to find out what people are like, play cards with them, or watch them eat, or else go travelling. You'll find out soon enough. There was a woman in that compartment--I say she was a woman because I don't know what else to call her--with her companion--she must have been her companion, she was with her anyway--well, I can tell you I was mortified. I was ashamed--such a conversation! Between the two of them! They might as well have been sitting in their own parlors. As far as that goes, you know, speaking for myself, a widow twice, it was nothing to me; but before my daughter.... I had to make her sit with her head out of the window all the way. It was pretty chilly for her. You can see for yourself she has taken cold. And she's got a cinder in her eye, too--worse luck! Her eyes are the best part of her.“
