Uit: Das Beste, was wir hatten

»Du bist also Björn«, sagte Gregor.

Ou de la nuit ;
Du froid de l’hiver
Ou bien de la chaleur…
Le temps des bêtes.

Parfois, cependant,
Espoir.
Il tentait alors de se souvenir ;
Toujours,
Ils se trompaient.

Uit: Blind Date

„DOLORES. Now where were we? Oh yes. I was going over my list of things to talk about. (Dolores picks up her list and begins reading) One: Who is going to win the football game next Friday? Two: Do you think we have had enough rain for the cotton yet? Three: I hear you were a football player in high school. What position did you play? Do you miss football? Four: I hear you are an insurance salesman. What kind of insurance do you sell? Five: What is the best car on the market today, do you think? Six: What church do you belong to? Seven: Do you enjoy dancing? Eight: Do you enjoy bridge? (She puts the list down) All right, that will do for a start. Now let's practice. I'll be Felix. Now. Hello, Sarah Nancy. (a pause. Sarah Nancy looks at her like she thinks she's crazy) Nnow what do you say, Sarah Nancy?

SARAH NANCY. About what?

DOLORES. About what? About what you say when someone says hello to you, Sarah Nancy. Now let's start again. Hello, Sarah Nancy.

SARAH NANCY. Hello.

DOLORES. Honey, don't just say hello and above all don't scowl and say hello. Smile. Hello, how very nice to see you. Let me feel your warmth. Now will you remember that? Of course you will. All right, let's start on our questions. Begin with your first question. (A pause) I'm waiting, honey.

SARAH NANCY. I forgot.

DOLORES. Well, don't be discouraged. I'll go over the list carefully and slowly again. One: Who is going to win the football game next Friday? Two: Do you think we have had enough rain for the cotton yet? Three: I hear you were a football player in high school. What position did you play? Do you miss football? Four: I hear you are an insurance salesman. What kind of insurance do you sell? Five: What is the best car on the market today, do you think? Six: What church do you belong to? Seven: Do you enjoy dancing? Eight: Do you enjoy bridge? Now we won't be rigid about the questions, of course. You can ask the last question first if you want to.

SARAH NANCY. What's the last question again?“

Idylle

Im Gras zirpt eine Grille
Im Dorfe bellt ein Hund
Wie ist die Nacht so stille
Leg dich zu mir, Sybille
Und reich mir deinen Mund

Der Wind riecht nach Kamille
Nach Rosen und nach Raps
Leg dich zu mir, Sybille
Dein Mund hat mehr Promille
als scharfer Zwetschgensaft

Streif ab die letzte Hülle
Die dich von mir noch trennt
Ich teil mit dir die, Sybille
Des Sommers dunkle Fülle
Was man so Liebe nennt

Leg dich zu mir, Sybille
Warum bist du so scheu?
Wozu gibt es die Pille?
Im Gras zirpt eine Grille
Leg dich zu mir ins Heu

So ist es Gottes Wille
Er schuf ja auch das Heu
Er schuf im Gras die grille
Und mich und dich, Sybille
Und auch die Nacht: Ahoi

The Dolly on the Dustcart

I'm the dolly on the dustcart,

I can see you're not impressed,

I'm fixed above the driver's cab,

With wire across me chest,

The dustman see, he noticed me,

Going in the grinder,

And he fixed me on the lorry,

I dunno if that was kinder.

This used to be a lovely dress,

In pink and pretty shades,

But it's torn now, being on the cart,

And black as the ace of spades,

There's dirt all round me face,

And all across me rosy cheeks,

Well, I've had me head thrown back,

But we ain't had no rain for weeks.

I used to be a 'Mama' doll,

Tipped forward, I'd say, 'Mum'

But the rain got in me squeaker,

And now I been struck dumb,

I had two lovely blue eyes,

But out in the wind and weather,

One's sunk back in me head like,

And one's gone altogether.

I'm not a soft, flesh coloured dolly,

Modern children like so much,

I'm one of those hard old dollies,

What are very cold to touch,

Modern dolly's underwear,

Leaves me a bit nonplussed,

I haven't got a bra,

But then I haven't got a bust!

But I was happy in that doll's house,

I was happy as a Queen,

I never knew that Tiny Tears,

Was coming on the scene,

I heard of dolls with hair that grew,

And I was quite enthralled,

Until I realised my head

Was hard and pink... and bald.

So I travel with the rubbish,

Out of fashion, out of style,

Out of me environment,

For mile after mile,

No longer prized... dustbinised!

Unfeminine, Untidy,

I'm the dolly on the dustcart,

And there's no collection Friday.

Zut alors !“

L'Hiver

Au bois de Boulogne, l'Hiver,

La terre a son manteau de neige.

Mille Iris, qui tendent leur piège,

Y passent comme un vif éclair.

Toutes, sous le ciel gris et clair,

Nous chantent le même solfège ;

Au bois de Boulogne, l'Hiver,

La terre a son manteau de neige.

Toutes les blancheurs de la chair

Y passent, radieux cortège ;

Les Antiopes de Corrège

S'habillent de martre et de vair

Au bois de Boulogne, l'Hiver.

Le Thé

Miss Ellen, versez-moi le Thé

Dans la belle tasse chinoise,

Où des poissons d'or cherchent noise

Au monstre rose épouvanté.

J'aime la folle cruauté

Des chimères qu'on apprivoise :

Miss Ellen, versez-moi le Thé

Dans la belle tasse chinoise.

Là, sous un ciel rouge irrité,

Une dame fière et sournoise

Montre en ses longs yeux de turquoise

L'extase et la naïveté :

Miss Ellen, versez-moi le Thé.

Sonnet lointain

Le long du noir sillon que je creuse sans bruit ;

I

Le cloître dort sa mort aux bords de glauques eaux ;

L’oubli d’ouate molle enveloppe la vie ;

Plus d’amour, plus d’orgueil, plus de haine, d’envie ;

Uit: The Willow

"They first became properly visible, these huge figures, just within the tops of the bushes -- immense, bronze-colored, moving, and wholly independent of the swaying of the branches. I saw them plainly and noted, now I came to examine them more calmly, that they were very much larger than human, and indeed that something in their appearance proclaimed them to be not human at all. Certainly they were not merely the moving tracery of the branches against the moonlight. They shifted independently. They rose upwards in a continuous stream from earth to sky, vanishing utterly as soon as they reached the dark of the sky. They were interlaced one with another, making a great column, and I saw their limbs and huge bodies melting in and out of each other, forming this serpentine line that bent and swayed and twisted spirally with the contortions of the wind-tossed trees. They were nude, fluid shapes, passing up the bushes, within the leaves almost - rising up in a living column into the heavens. Their faces I never could see. Unceasingly they poured upwards, swaying in great bending curves, with a hue of dull bronze upon their skins . . .. For the longer I looked the more certain I became that these figures were real and living, though perhaps not according to the standards that the camera and the biologist would insist upon."

Glory To The Camels

From Songs For the Dead Rooster

We made such an excellent couple

that we would have been perfect for a TV commercial.

For example:

He is sitting at the bar counter.

She is a few stools away.

She starts looking through her purse.

He offers in an outstretched hand

an open pack of cigarettes.

At the very same moment She finally finds her own

inside the purse.

He laughs.

She smiles.

Next frame:

two packs of camels on the bar counter

one by the other.

An ashtray, butts, smoke.

Then again:

He and She leave the bar together.

Naturally, for the bright future.

An inscription:

CAMEL CIGARETTES

AN EXCELLENT REASON TO GET ACQUAINTED!

A few trifles remained:

choosing the background music,

arranging for interior decoration and the extras,

deciding about the future.

First came a few

really good letters.

Then one of them answered with a delay.

Then this became the norm, then replying

became a duty.

Life put back into place all that it wanted.

Now all that remains are thoughts:

was there anything there to begin with besides the smoke?

But what the hell for, you monster you,

did you squish your yellow butts in the ashtray

with such desperation as if you were a camel herder

accidentally admitted into decent company? . . .

I Come From There

I come from there and I have memories

Born as mortals are, I have a mother

And a house with many windows,

I have brothers, friends,

And a prison cell with a cold window.

Mine is the wave, snatched by sea-gulls,

I have my own view,

And an extra blade of grass.

Mine is the moon at the far edge of the words,

And the bounty of birds,

And the immortal olive tree.

I walked this land before the swords

Turned its living body into a laden table.

I come from there. I render the sky unto her mother

When the sky weeps for her mother.

And I weep to make myself known

To a returning cloud.

I learnt all the words worthy of the court of blood

So that I could break the rule.

I learnt all the words and broke them up

To make a single word: Homeland.....

Vollmond

Mein Herz schlug laut. Fast wäre es vom Tod erwacht.

Baisers

« Un baiser

abrège la vie humaine de 3 minutes,

affirme le Département de Psychologie

de Western State College,

Gunnison (Col).

„Once when my father was showing me and my brother how to dive, he told us about the horse diving act he and his partner devised for the Drumheller gala.  My father was the front-end of the horse and his partner was the rear.  The "horse" would come out from the dressing room neighing and prancing, climb up the ladder to the three-metre board, strut out and rear up on the end of the board, and do a double dive.  The timing of the two halves of the horse had to be perfect.  At one of the performances in Carbon, the audience roared with laughter even more than usual as soon as the "horse" stepped out onto the board and then again as it went through the preparatory motions for the first dive.  His partner was hamming up this part of the act and getting tremendous laughs but my father could not figure out what was was going on.  Every time he tried to look back or between his legs the audience laughed louder.  When the act was over and they went back to the change room, which was also used for the hockey rink in the winter, my father asked, "What the hell were you doing back there?"  His partner, who had had a bit to drink before going on that night, grinned and pulled a red and white striped hockey sock stuffed with toilet paper from the hind-end of the horse costume.  During the act when the "horse" pranced and reared on the board he had dropped the hockey sock out of the costume between the "horse's" hind legs.  Whenever my father tried to see what was going on, he pulled the sock back in.  So during this Carbon performance "Metitia" was a studhorse.“

Uit: The Golden Scarecrow

“Barbara Flint was a little girl, aged seven, who lived with her parents at No. 36 March Square. Her brother and sister, Master Anthony and Miss Misabel Flint, were years and years older, so you must understand that she led rather a solitary life. She was a child with very pale flaxen hair, very pale blue eyes, very pale cheeks -- she looked like a china doll who had been left by a careless mistress out in the rain. She was a very sensitive child, cried at the least provocation, very affectionate, too, and ready to imagine that people didn't like her. Mr. Flint was a stout, elderly gentleman, whose favourite pursuit was to read the newspapers in his club, and to inveigh against the Liberals. He was pale and pasty, and sufferedfrom indigestion. Mrs. Flint was tall, thin and severe, and a great helper at St. Matthew's, the church round the corner. She gave up all her time to church work and the care of the poor, and it wasn't her fault that the poor hated her. Between the Scylla of politics and the Charybdis of religion there was very little left for poor Barbara; she faded away under the care of an elderly governess who suffered from a perfect cascade of ill-fated love affairs; it seemed that gentlemen were always "playing with her feelings." But in all probability a too vivid imagination led her astray in this matter; at any rate, she cried so often during Barbara's lessons that the title of the lesson-book, "Reading without Tears," was sadly belied.“

Die Vorsehung

Der Pfarrer will's den Kindern klar

an einem Beispiel machen,

wie Gottes Vorsehung fürwahr

sich zeigt in allen Sachen.

Er spricht: "Es fällt ein Mauersmann

vom Kirchendach herunter,

kommt unten mit Gepolter an,

doch unverletzt und munter.

Kann man aus solchem Vorgang nicht

ein göttlich Wirken lesen?

Sprich, Heinz, wie nennst du dies?" -

Heinz spricht: "Das ist Zufall gewesen."

"Pass besser auf! Nach einer Weil

fällt unser Maurer wieder

vom Dach herab, und gleichfalls heil

kommt er zu Boden nieder.

Wie heißt solch gütiges Geschick?

Das Wort liegt auf der Zunge

dir gewiss?" - "Das nenn ich Glück!",

erwidert drauf der Junge.

Der Pfarrer kraus die Stirne zieht,

doch spricht er ohne Galle:

"Nimm an, ein drittes Mal geschieht

dies Wunder mit dem Falle.

Nicht wahr, nun siehst du dich schon frei

von deiner Geistestrübung?

Sprich: was jetzt wirksam war hierbei?"

Wem je den Arm der Mut gestrammt;

Wer je ein Schwert mit Händen griff,
Wem je ein Schwert im Hiebe pfiff,
Wer je der Klinge fest und traut
Ins zornige blaue Aug' geschaut:

Und gält' es Erd' und Himmelreich;

Herbst

Der Herbst färbt die toten Blätter
Und legt den Finger auf den Mund -
Stirbt es sich leichter bunt?
Im Fluss die Fische werden fetter
Der Winter kommt, die Zeit ist wund.

Vertigo

From a sea in bloom everything will burst
One day and be a forest.
From now on what you'll see is the soft hour
Of birds on the branches where they rest.
Wait for the god who waits around:
On blooded-red pines, the sun
Will claw till the great night comes on.

One day, all will be sound, such sound
As travels from star to cloud and to star from earthly things,
So its ellipse will spread with resounding chimes.
While you eye these rings,
Wait for the voice among voices to rebound.
Passing through organ-music, the hair-winged moon
Will come out quite soon.

I have lived in the wind.
Vertigo turned into lonely day. Alone,
My prophets were far-off rocks.
Neither forest nor sound, all by myself, windblown
Rain comforts the soul.
If not, godlike we must wait around
To hear a voice or any sound.

Are we going to live without aging?

At dawn, a throng came outOf the skies:
Convex shields, glitteringTattoos, a rose, a daggered
Heart, bows of wheat,Aquariums emptying out, a king,
A turkey's crest, a fresh corpse,
Brass-footed horses, a wine in a glazed jug
Waiting to be poured into the sea.
A tumult arose from the roots of the trees,
Eyeless monsters emerged from the sea.
What's that? Should we believe in rapacious beaks?
Or in thin axes, in grass burned at night
Or in tree-shaped wings?I pay no heed to clouds,
I don't careIf they go south along the river
Or to the slow lakes set afire by towers.
Let them go...Are we going to live without aging?
Come, let's go and see the dawn's spider.

A Serenade To My Mother

I remember your old face

My precious mother and very sweet

With light wrinkles and lines

My precious one and very sweet.

You are sitting on the porch

Alongside the growing fig tree

Throwing a shadow on your face

My precious mother and very sweet.

You are sitting sadly and silently

Remembering those old days

That have come and also gone by

My precious mother and very sweet.

And you remember your own son

Who had left you and gone far.

"Where has he gone ?" You wonder,

My precious one and very sweet.

"Where is he now?" You wonder,

"Is he alive or is he dead?

And what doors has he been knocking?"

My precious one and very sweet.

And you wonder if he's been tired

Or if he's been cheated by love;

And in whose laps has he made love?

My precious one and very sweet.

You are thinking sadly

While the fig tree keeps rocking.

Your sorrow has no limits indeed

My precious one and very sweet.

And then sour tears

Drop down your eyes one by one

Upon your weary hands

My precious one and very sweet.
